Revised 07 January, 2024.
The front photo of Bob was taken by William Claxton in 2006. Several people on the Internet have noticed the similarity between the album front and the sleeve art of the Blue Note Records jazz label, so it was suggested the album may appear on the Blue Note label (the CD and record label design is that used by Blue Note). However, as all copies of The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Raw/Complete came with a flyer advertising this album, it was after all to be released on the Columbia/Sony Music label. The album sleeve is indeed inspired by the iconic album sleeves created for Blue Note by Reid Miles between 1955 and 1967, such as the 1962 Hub-Tones album by Freddie Hubbard, thanks to Harold Lepidus for the information. Thanks to Dag Braathen for the Blue Note record label and the album poster. The CD design also uses the Blue Note record label design.
Thanks to Derek Barker for information about Full Moon And Empty Arms, a song which appeared on the bobdylan.com home page on 13 May 2014. The song was written by Buddy Kaye and Ted Mossman, based on a theme by Sergei Rachmaninoff, in 1945 and was a hit for Frank Sinatra in that year. Thanks to Dag Braathen for finding the sheet music to Blue Moon by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, performed by Bob on Self Portrait in 1970 and reissued in a remastered version on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) in 2013, which has the moon and clouds design used for Bob's version of Full Moon And Empty Arms!
Bob amazed fans by performing the Frank Sinatra classic Stay With Me, written by Jerome Moross and Carolyn Leigh, the theme tune from the 1963 Otto Preminger film, "The Cardinal", as the last encore from the Dolby Theater, Hollywood, CA, on 26 Oct 2014. we now know this is another song from Shadows In The Night.

In the rear picture you'd expect Bob to be looking at a
Sinatra 7" single, but it's actually a Sun record! Thanks to Rob Joy for
identifying it as Johnny Cash's Get Rhythm/I Walk The Line
Rob says "Based on the larger version of the photo on the rear sleeve of the vinyl edition of Shadows In The Night I think that the record Bob and the masked lady are holding is Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm/I Walk The Line as re-released by Jack White's Third Man Records on 21 May 2013. The B-side I Walk The Line is facing the camera. The record definitely is not an original Sun pressing, but a Third Man re-release, because it has the newly designed sleeve, which is exclusive to the Third Man Sun reissues. Also the black dot on the right side of the label is the Third Man Records logo, which of course cannot be found on Sun originals. The fact that it must be a Third Man reissue considerably narrows down the number of records from which the one in the photo was chosen. Based on the shape of the words on the label (the photo is too blurry even on the larger vinyl version to be readable) my conclusion is that it should be the Johnny Cash 7" mentioned above. I cannot really see the "I" from "I Walk The Line", but other than that it's the only one of the Third Man Sun discs that fits the visual. This also means the photo is from 2013 or later. Unless of course the record Bob is holding in the original photo is another record and the Third Man disc was photoshopped into the picture."
Also thanks to Andreas Volkert.
Other songs recorded at the 2014 sessions:

Come Rain Or Come Shine (Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer) - performed live in Oct 2015 (released in May 2016 on Fallen Angels)

Nevertheless (Harry Ruby/Bert Kalmar) (released in May 2016 on Fallen Angels)
On A Little Street In Singapore (Peter DeRose/Billy Hill) (released in May 2016 on Fallen Angels)

That Old Black Magic (Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer) (released in May 2016 on Fallen Angels)
Young At Heart (Johnny Richards/Carolyn Leigh) (released in May 2016 on Fallen Angels)
Also rumoured was a duet of Somethin' Stupid (Clarence Carson Parks) with Lana Del Rey (Elizabeth Woolridge Grant)! However, when Lana was asked about this on Friday 18 Sep 2015 by Matthew Ingate she said "I f*cking wish I'd sung with Bobby, it's a dream, he's a real hero. But I'd die if we sang together, especially a Sinatra song. But he's just so hard to reach out to, he really keeps himself to himself. I would love to sing with him, just once, though."
Brunswick 8443 (USA 1939) |
On 15 Oct 2015 Bob surprised the audience at Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany by performing Melancholy Mood! Melancholy Mood (Walter Schumann/Vick R. Knight Sr.), now released on Fallen Angels, was the B-side of Frank Sinatra's first single in 1939! The A-side was From The Bottom Of My Heart (Harry James/Andy Gibson/Billy Hays/Morty Beck). This single was on the US Brunswick label, and considering Bob, where he first performed the song is not likely to be a coincidence. Thanks to Hermann Rechberger, who was at the show, for the information, and also to Sonny Boy McFitzson.
The album sold very well, for example reaching No. 1 in the UK in Mar 2015, a second album of Sinatra songs called Fallen Angels was released on 20 May 2016, and a triple album Triplicate will be released in Mar 2017! Thanks to Keith Venturoni, Szymon Strużyna and several others for information about the Record Store Day 2015 7" single on blue vinyl of The Night We Called It A Day/Stay With Me from Shadows In The Night, released on 18 Apr 2015 in the USA and UK. This is listed in International Singles 2010s. |

The Japanese booklet has English lyrics and the translations, plus liner notes in two parts; the first by Heckel Sugano about relationship of Bob and Frank (according to this, Bob's performance of Restless Farewell at Frank Sinatra's 80th Birthday Tribute at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, 19 Nov 1995, was at Frank's request!); the second by Yasuo Sangu, the President of the Sinatra Society of Japan, about Frank's original recordings. The CD tray is glossy black but "SICP-4391" is printed on the reverse of the rear insert at bottom right (again, like the European release, it can't normally be seen). Also shown is a badge from Tower Records Japan.
