Self Portrait 1970
Self Portrait
(1970)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 21 February, 2024.

Original US stereo LP, Columbia KC 30290, 21 Oct 1970.

The front photograph is by Len Siegler, from Aug or Sep 1970. An out-take in colour from the same photo session appears in the booklet for The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 [Rare and Unreleased] 1961-1991. Like Self Portrait, neither Bob's name nor the album title appear on the front sleeve, although this was changed on some international releases - see below. The rear picture shows Bob with Victoria Spivey at Cue Recording Studio, New York, 2 Mar 1962, at the session that produced Three Kings And The Queen (see 1964), and Kings And The Queen Vol. 2 (see 1972).

Spivey LP 1014 (USA, 1972) - detail of rear with Bob, scan by Kenneth Robson

The uncredited rear photo was taken by Victoria Spivey's husband Len Kunstadt and another photo from the same session with Bob appears on the rear sleeve of the 1972 album, included above left. Michael Gray says in his Bob Dylan Encyclopaedia that the photo used for New Morning was taken by Len Siegler, but that the copyright was owned by Len Kunstadt, who offered copies of the photo for sale as art prints. This leads Rod MacBeath to conclude that, because the photos from the Aug or Sep 1970 session are the only ones known to be credited to Len Siegler, he and Len Kunstadt are the same person!

This album did not have a separate mono mix, but a mono version reduced from stereo was released in South America - for this see Mono Album Releases.

According to Michael Krogsgaard a master tape of the first version of the album was prepared in June 1970 and the tracklist was:

Side 1: The Man In Me; Winterlude; Mary Ann; One More Weekend.
Side 2: Mr. Bojangles; Tomorrow's A Long Time; Three Angels; Ballad Of Ira Hayes; If Dogs Run Free.
As can be seen, this includes three tracks eventually released on
Dylan in 1973.

The tracklist of the released album is:

Side 1: If Not For You; Day Of The Locusts; Time Passes Slowly; Went To See The Gypsy; Winterlude; If Dogs Run Free
Side 2: New Morning; Sign On The Window; One More Weekend; The Man In Me; Three Angels; Father of Night.

Several of these songs, namely New Morning, Father Of Night and Time Passes Slowly, were written for a play by Archibald MacLeish called "Scratch", but were not in the end used in the play. The rehearsal script shown still has "with the songs of Bob Dylan" on the front.

No single taken from New Morning was ever released in the USA. The US single with If Not For You from New Morning paired with Tomorrow Is A Long Time was only released in Feb 1972 to promote the compilation Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II.

Out-takes from this album are:

7" Singles: Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (solo version R-0072, see 1971) (For R-0096, the band version of Spanish Is The Loving Tongue, Self Portrait out-take released on the album Dylan, see 1973. This take is different from the take released in 2013 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)!) Watching The River Flow, the A-side of the single, was recorded in Mar 1971 and released on Greatest Hits Vol. II.

Dylan (1973): Lily Of The West (R-0097), Sara Jane (R-0098), Can't Help Falling In Love (R-0100), Mr. Bojangles (R-0101), Big Yellow Taxi (R-0102), Mary Ann (R-0103), Ballad of Ira Hayes (R-0104). Three of these were on the first version of New Morning above. For all these see 1973.

The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): If Not For You (alternate take recorded with George Harrison during the New Morning sessions at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970)

Al Kooper's 2001 Columbia 2CD compilation Rare & Well Done includes an alternate take of Went To See The Gypsy from the sessions which doesn't actually include Bob, see Honourable Mentions.

Sony Custom Mix Web-site ( 2003): I Threw It All Away (alternate take recorded with George Harrison during the New Morning sessions at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 May 1970)

Apple iTunes Online Music Store (2004): Went To See The Gypsy (previously unreleased piano demo R-0683, see Online Performances (Other))

"Chronicles Volume One 6 Song Sampler" (2004): New Morning (with tuning/intro); Father Of Night (see 2004). Both of these tracks appear to be remastered, and may be from a forthcoming remastered release of New Morning. New Morning includes the tuning/intro that was present on the original US and UK vinyl releases (R-0071, see 1970), but has been absent from all CD releases of the album including the latest remastered worldwide releases.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait 1969-1971 (2013): Several out-takes from this album are included on this set - Went To See The Gypsy (demo, not the previously unreleased piano demo that appeared on the Apple iTunes Online Music Store (2004) - R-0683, see Online Performances (Other)); Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (unreleased, not the version released as a single in 1971 - R-0072(M), see 1971); Time Passes Slowly #1 (alternate version); If Not For You (alternate version); Working On A Guru (unreleased); Bring Me A Little Water (unreleased); Sign On The Window (with orchestral overdubs); If Dogs Run Free (alternate version); New Morning (with horn section overdubs); Went To See The Gypsy (alternate version); Time Passes Slowly #2 (alternate version). Thanks to Peter Coulthard for reminding me that the New Morning with horn overdubs, CD2, track 14 of the 2013 2CD includes the intro with Bob saying "OK, here we go". However, as the 2013 version contains overdubs, R-0071 remains a rarity.

Dylan, Cash And The Nashville Cats: A New Music City (2015): If Not For You (alternate version with Lloyd Green on pedal steel) - Dag Braathen says this is the same take as on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 2 Jun 1970, but with the violin mixed down and steel guitar overdubbed.

Even more New Morning out-takes are included on the very limited Dec 2020 3CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1970, see 2020.

Thanks to Jeff Gold, Bruce Mulle and several others for news of 149 Dylan acetates from the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era that were found in a New York building in West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, that was once rented by Bob as a studio. These have been named "The West Houston Street Acetates" and contain many unreleased versions of Dylan songs from the period. They will be listed in full on the 2014 page when time permits. For full details, see here.

Variant 1 of New Morning Side 1 shown has five songs: If Not For You, two mixes of Day Of The Locusts, Time Passes Slowly, and New Morning, Winterlude is missing. The label has Bob's handwriting choosing one mix of Day Of The Locusts and modifying titles. Apart from the rejected mix of Day Of The Locusts, these may be the released versions of the songs. See the 2014 page for full details.

Variant 1 of New Morning Side 2 shown has six songs: New Morning; Sign On The Window; One More Weekend; The Man In Me; Three Angels; Father Of Night. This acetate has Bob Johnston's handwriting on the label and Bob Dylan's handwriting on the sleeve.  Sign on the Window has an extra 7 seconds on intro, The Man In Me has an extra 4 seconds on intro, Three Angels has an extra 2 seconds of organ at the beginning.  Similar mixes to released album. See the 2014 page for full details.

Variant 2 of New Morning (two discs) has an alternate sequence, but all tracks could be the released mixes.

Variant 3 of New Morning (again two discs) has only ten tracks in a different sequence, omitting Winterlude and Three Angels, but all tracks could be the released mixes.

Variant 3 of New Morning (again two discs) again has a different sequence, but all tracks could be the released mixes.

Variant 4 of New Morning (again two discs) again has a different sequence, but all tracks could be the released mixes.

Also shown are acetates with The Man In Me, If Not For You, Father of Night and two versions of Time Passes Slowly. The Man In Me is a different mix from the version on the multi-track acetate above. The handwriting on the sleeve says "B-1 - Bring Ron (Ron Cornelius on guitar) up all the way. Piano up in long fade". If Not For You is the album track from New Morning with a different mix including strings, noted on the label. Father Of Night is the New Morning track. Version 1 of Time Passes Slowly is a different edit of alternate take from New Morning released on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971). Version 2 of Time Passes Slowly is an unreleased take very different from those released on New Morning and The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971). See the 2014 page for full details.

Vinyl and Tape Releases

"New Morning" - promo stereo LP releases, Columbia KC 30290 (USA), Oct 1970:
Only the first US pressing of the album had the tuning/intro at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970). All these copies shown look like regular commercial copies with stickers on the sleeves, although the record labels differ from those of the commercial copies below.

Along the bottom of the front sleeve of Gerd Rundel's promo copy (copy 1) is pasted an 11" x 3" white radio station timing strip with the text: "COLUMBIA RECORDS RADIO STATION SERVICE - NOT FOR RESALE" plus the track listing and track timings. The rear has the Columbia logo and "KC 30290" catalogue number as shown below for the commercial copy. The record labels are the commercial red Columbia design with the logo in a ring round the circumference. On these labels "NEW MORNING" is above "BOB DYLAN" and one song is listed above the centre hole. This promo copy of KC 30290 has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 30290-1E, Side 2 - P BL 30290-1D.

Preston Ginn's promo copy (copy 2) has a torn radio station timing strip on the front with handwritten notes next to each track title. The rear sleeve has another radio station sticker with handwriting. This copy has the earliest matrix numbers so far listed: Side 1 - AL 30290-1C, Side 2 - BL 30290-1A.

Manuel García Jara's promo copy (copy 3) has a sticker with "PROMOTION - Not For Sale" on the rear sleeve. It has completely different record labels, still with the commercial design. “BOB DYLAN" is above "NEW MORNING" and in a completely different type face. The song title layout is also different. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - KC PAL-30290-1G, Side 2 - KC PBL-30290-1G. Lars M. Banke has a promo copy (copy 4) with a sticker with text “For Demonstration Use Only Not For Sale” on the front sleeve at bottom left. The record of this copy has first release labels as shown with one song above the centre hole. The stamped matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - P AL 30290 1E, Side 2 - P BL 30290 1E.

Thanks to Tim Norford, Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara, Lars M. Banke and Preston Ginn for information and pictures.

"New Morning" - commercial stereo LP releases, Columbia KC 30290 (USA), 21 Oct 1970; reissues: Columbia JC 30290 (USA), late 1970s; Columbia PC 30290 (USA), 1980s, re-released 1990s:
Only the first US pressing of the album had the tuning/intro at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970).

Columbia KC 30290 (USA), 21 Oct 1970:

Columbia KC 30290 (USA) - front scan by Stuart Moore (1970s commercial releases)
The front sleeve of these releases has no text. Thanks to Stuart Moore for scans of two US releases. The commercial "KC 30290" labels of Stuart's copies have "BOB DYLAN" above "NEW MORNING" like the second promo copy above, with no songs listed above the centre hole. However, these labels have a different typeface and track list layout. Hans Seegers says these label variations occur because Columbia had seven pressing plants in the USA at that time, and they all sourced their record labels independently.

Simon Blokker has a commercial copy with record labels that are the same as Gerd Rundel's promo copy above. This record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL-30290-1K, Side 2 - P BL-30290-2B. Rene Jørgensen has a commercial copy of KC 30290 (label style the same as Stuart's) where the record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290-1C, Side 2 - BL 30290-1C.

Columbia JC 30290 (USA), late 1970s:

Columbia JC 30290 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Dag Braathen (late 1970s release)

Thanks to Dag Braathen for the scans of the late 1970s release where the record labels have catalogue number "JC 30290". The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 30290-1AD, Side 2 - P BL 30290-2G.

Columbia PC 30290 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Ronald Born (1980s release - small pressing ring)

The first release of "PC 30290" in the 1980s still used the "KC 30290" sleeve above, although the record labels now have "PC 32090". Ronald Born has a copy with a transparent sticker with "PC 32090" on the spine, although "KC 32090" is not completely obscured. The sleeve does not have a barcode. This copy has virtually the same record labels as Stuart Moore's, although "SIDE 1" and "SIDE 2" are slightly larger. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-30290-1A, Side 2 -BL-30290-2F.

Ronald's second 1980s copy has a "PC 30290" sleeve (the same as Gerd Rundel's 1990s copy) and record labels that are still in the 1970s/80s style with a very small pressing ring. This copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - <PAP> AL 30290-G1B, Side 2 - <PAP> AL 30290-G2C. Ronald thinks this is a late 1980s pressing from the Columbia plant in Pitman, NJ.

Columbia PC 30290 (USA) - detail of spine, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (1980s release)

Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy which comes in a glossy sleeve without a barcode, with just "30290" at rear bottom left and “PC 30290” on the spine. On the rear sleeve, at bottom left, it has “Printed In U.S.A.”, like "JC 30290", the late 1970s release. (“Printed in U.S.A.” is missing on the rear sleeve of the "PC 30290" 1990s release below.) The record has plain red Columbia labels. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 30290-1AD, Side 2 - P BL 30290-2G.

Columbia JC 33235 (USA) - detail of Side 1 with inverted triangle, scan by Manuel García Jara (shown as example)

None of these Side 1 record labels have the inverted triangle to the left of the centre hole that was introduced on US Columbia record and cassette labels with Biograph in 1985.

Columbia PC 30290 (USA), 1990s:

Columbia PC 30290 (USA) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (1990s release)

The 1990s release comes in a glossy sleeve with a barcode on the rear at top right, just "30290" at rear bottom left and “PC 30290” on the spine. The record has new-style plain red Columbia labels and a vinyl weight of 125gm. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290-A, Side 2 - BL 30290-B.

Columbia PC 30290 (USA for export) - Side 2 with black ring-shaped sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (1980s release)

Lars M. Banke has a copy of a late 1970s release which was bought in Sweden with just "30290" on the sleeve and "JC 30290" on the record labels. It has small circular black stickers on the front sleeve over the spine and also on the rear sleeve obscuring the Columbia name. The Columbia logos on the record labels are blacked out with ring-shaped stickers. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1  - P AL 30290 1A, Side 2 - P BL 30290 2G.

Lars also has a copy of a 1980s release with "KC 30290" on the sleeve and "PC 30290" on the record labels which was probably exported to Scandinavia. There is a small black rectangular sticker covering “Columbia” in the Columbia logo on the rear sleeve at bottom left as well as two instances of "Columbia" obscured in the text. The record labels again have black ring-shaped stickers. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 30290 1AB, Side 2 - P BL 30290 2B.

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

"New Morning" - 180gm stereo vinyl releases, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab LMF 425 (USA), May 2013; Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab MFSL 1-425 (USA), 22 Jul 2014:

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab LMF 425 (USA) - picture from Music Direct web-site (2013)

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Inc. of Chicago, IL, released an analogue remastered version of the album on heavyweight 180gm vinyl, pressed at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), Camarillo, CA, in Jul 2014. This does have the tuning/intro at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970). There also seems to have been a previous release, LMF 425, in May 2013.

Gerd Rundel's test pressing of MFSL 1-425 was made by RTI (Record Technology Inc.) for Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. The record comes in a plain white cut-out sleeve. Side 1 has a generic RTI label and is dated 15 Aug 2013 while Side 2 has a plain white label. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 1-425 A1 plus 22265.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 1-425 B1 plus 22265.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite. In the matrix numbers, “KW @ MoFi” means that the records were mastered by Krieg Wunderlich of Mobile Fidelity.

For other 1970s albums in the same AFRTS series with Bob Dylan on one side and different artists on the other, see International Albums (Various Artist Compilations) 1970s. The 1978 AFRTS single LP release of Bob Dylan At Budokan (RL 21-9/P-18371-72) is not listed there because all tracks on both sides are by Bob Dylan. For that see the Bob Dylan At Budokan page in this section. For a 1981 AFRTS album with Bob Dylan and Art Garfunkel, see International Albums (Various Artists Compilations) 1980-86. Columbia KC 30290 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release - "CBS RECORDS CANADA")

These releases were made in Canada. The 1970 sleeve was made by Shorepak even though this information on the rear of Manuel's copy is written in very small text, almost unreadable - this info is missing from the mid-1970s sleeve. "LITHO IN CANADA" is printed on the spine. The "1960s-style" 1970 Columbia Canadian labels have the white "STEREO"/"360° SOUND"/arrows logo and Bob's name above the album title (see the Singapore/Malaysian label below). The record of the 1970 copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-30290-1A (at 12 o'clock) 2-HD: (at 6 o'clock), Side 2 - BL-30290-1A (at 12 o'clock) 2-HD: (at 6 o'clock). Rick Craddock has an original release with the same front sleeve and record labels as shown but a different rear sleeve abnd matrix numbers. The rear sleeve does not have the Shorepak information at bottom left, nor the Columbia Canada text at bottom right. The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - P BL-30290-1L (at 11 o'clock, stamped), Side 2 - kc (handwritten) AL-30290-1A 9 (at 11 o'clock, stamped).

The record of the mid-1970s copy shown has new style labels with a ring of Columbia logos round the circumference. The bottom line of the record labels is "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.". Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976, so this release is after then. This copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-30290-1A, Side 2 - BL-30290-1A.

Thanks to "Frank", Manuel García Jara, Gerd Rundel and Rick Craddock for information and scans.

"New Morning" - commercial stereo LPs, Columbia KC 30290 (Canada for export), mid-1970s:

Columbia KC 30290 (Canada for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (all copies)

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the mid-1970s Canadian release KC 30290 as above bought in Scandinavia that has had the "Columbia" logos on the rear sleeve obscured with a black circular sticker (there is no Columbia information on the front to obscure). The Columbia Canada information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is not obscured. On the record labels there are black ring-shaped stickers over the ring of "Columbia" logos. Lars also has a second mid 1970s copy with the same black ring-shaped stickers on the record labels, but where the Columbia logo on the rear sleeve is not obscured. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-30290-1A, Side 2 - BL-30290-1A.

On the third export copy bought in Sweden “Columbia” is blacked out twice at the bottom of the rear sleeve. There are clumsy “handmade” black rings on the record labels. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290 1A, Side 2 - BL 30290 1A.

Columbia KC 30290 (Canada for export) - Side 2 with black ring-shaped sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (fourth copy)

On Lars' fourth export copy the Columbia logos on the rear sleeve are obscured with black pen (not a black circular sticker). And like the first two copies shown the Columbia logos on the label are obscured with black ring-shaped stickers – however not “clumsy hand-made” as the third copy. The record again has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290 1A, Side 2 - BL 30290 1A. The album was bought in Sweden.

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

"New Morning" - stereo promo reel-to-reel tape, CBS (no catalogue number) (UK), 30 Oct 1970:

Front of box photo from eBay
This is a 10" 15 ips metal reel-to-reel EMI tape, previously owned by a Beatles collector because it was given to Bob's friend George Harrison. The back of the EMI box is marked “Disk To Tape” and the artist is listed as Dylan. There is a small yellow sticker on the back of the box and “for George Harrison” is handwritten on it.

CBS S 69001 (UK) - front (variants 1, 2 & 4 - my copy)

All UK pressings of the album had the tuning/intro at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970). My 1970 copy is laminated on the front sleeve only. The front sleeve has no text, not even a CBS logo/catalogue number. Gerd Rundel's test pressing comes in an unlaminated sleeve and a "HEAVY ON CBS" inner sleeve. The Sides 1 and 2 labels are the same. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-69001-A1, Side 2 - S-69001-B1.

My copy of the record has orange UK CBS labels with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69001-A2, Side 2 - S 69001-B1. Rene Jørgensen has a copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69001-A1, Side 2 - S 69001-B1. The central CBS is more finely printed and the text below the centre hole is positioned slightly lower. It has the same outer and inner sleeves as my copy. Rene has another copy with the same labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69001-A1, Side 2 - S 69001-B2.

CBS S 69001 (UK) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (1970 release variant 4)

Gerd Rundel has a copy, also laminated on the front only with the same record labels and matrix numbers as Rene's first copy: Side 1 - S 69001-A1, Side 2 - S 69001-B1. Gerd's copy has the same inner sleeve as Record 2 of my copy of Self Portrait. Lars M. Banke has a copy with "handmade" lettering of "BOB DYLAN" and "NEW MORNING" on the front, and the owner's name expertly lettered on the rear sleeve. This copy has the record labels shown with the printed text lower and matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69001-A2, Side 2 - S 69001-B2. Paul Shenton's copy also has these matrix numbers. The record has variant 1 labels and comes in the 1971 CBS UK inner sleeve with "The Greatest Hits are on CBS" as shown for the UK release of More Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, see here.

The paper inner sleeve of my copy is a third example from 1970. The front features Simon and Garfunkel, with an interesting point for Paul Simon fans being the inclusion of the then UK-only solo album, The Paul Simon Song Book (unavailable for a long time but now in print again). The reverse shows current albums with the theme "Sounds of the 70s on CBS" (mostly easy listening, but Johnny Cash is featured). Again the rear sleeve shows the then postal address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1. Ronald Born's Dutch copy of New Morning listed below comes in a fourth example of a CBS UK inner sleeve, this time featuring Bob's albums including this one on the front.

Gerd Rundel has another copy I've called variant 4 where the record has a double pressing ring on both sides. It comes in the same sleeve and inner sleeve as mine.

CBS S 69001 (UK), re-released late 1970s, early 1980s:

CBS S 69001 (UK) - detail of rear without laminate line, scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s/early 1980s releases - top right)

Gerd Rundel has two late 1970s/early 1980s releases with unlaminated sleeves, otherwise identical to that of the 1970 release. The first record has orange/yellow CBS labels with a different text layout from the 1970 release. "MADE IN ENGLAND" is still at the bottom of the labels. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-69001-A-2 (handwritten), Side 2 - S 69001 B3 (stamped). The record of Gerd's second copy is slightly later because "MADE IN ENGLAND" is now in the circumference text, and CBS copyright info is now at the bottom of the labels. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-69001-A4, Side 2 - CBS 69001 B3.

CBS 32267 (UK), 1982, re-released 1984:

CBS 32267 (UK) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (1982 and 1984 releases)

The sleeve of Gerd Rundel's 1982 release has an new catalogue number, CBS 32267, with the same front but a different rear. There is now cassette information below the CBS logo in the top right hand corner and “LC 0149” in a capsule in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left hand corner the copyright text now includes the Ganton Street address for PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd.), the UK music licensing company and performance rights organisation, who moved from Oxford Street in London to Ganton Street in 1977. Above it is the "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" cassette anti piracy logo (the first Dylan album to have this logo on first release was Infidels in 1983).

The 1982 record still has orange/yellow CBS labels and "MADE IN ENGLAND" has been moved from the bottom of the label to the circumference text on the right. It comes in a “NICE PRICE Surprise” inner sleeve showing albums from this series and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 32267 A3, Side 2 - CBS 32267 B4, 69001-B4.

The 1984 release comes in the same outer sleeve but has a different "NICE PRICE" inner sleeve dated 1984. The record now has red CBS labels and has CBS copyright information at the bottom, moved to the circumference text on the late 1980s record labels (not yet shown). The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 32267 A3, Side 2 - CBS 32267 B4. Gerd Rundel has a second copy in the same outer sleeve with slightly different red record labels. The copyright text at the bottom of the labels is shorter and the circumference text is longer. The record of this copy comes in a plain white inner sleeve and has the same handwritten matrix numbers as the other red label copy.

CBS 40-69001 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Stuart Moore (first release)
These 1970s cassette releases have the original UK catalogue number.

The first release has a longer insert, blank on the reverse. The first release cassette is light grey with orange CBS paper labels.

The second release has a shorter insert with the track listing on the inside. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The cassette text layout is different from that of the first release labels.

These releases have Bob saying "OK, here we go." at the start of the title track.

The cassette is again light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The cassette text layout is again different from that of the two 1970s releases.

This release also has Bob saying "OK, here we go." at the start of the title track.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS S 69001 (NL), Oct 1970, re-released mid-1970s; reissue CBS 32267 (NL), 1982, re-released 1985; Columbia 32267 1 (NL), 1990s:
All releases of this album have Bob saying "OK, here we go." at the start of the title track, later edited from US vinyl and all CD releases (R-0071, see 1970).

CBS S 69001 (NL), Oct 1970 (two sleeve variants):

CBS S 69001 (NL) - front (1970 release, my copy)

Copies of the original 1970 release were also exported to France, see the illustration with the French sticker "le nouveau BOB DYLAN [the new BOB DYLAN]". Sergio Mariano Romay's copy has a fully laminated sleeve (front and rear) with the French silver sticker.  The record comes in the CBS inner sleeve shown, showing amongst other CBS LPs John Wesley Harding (S 63252) and Nashville Skyline, (S 63601). The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - Ste-69001-A  S 64179-1, Side 2 - Ste-69001-B  S 64179-2. My 1970 copy, bought in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016, is exactly the same as Hans' copy except that the record does not have a front sticker and comes in a plain paper inner sleeve. The rear sleeve has an orange sticker at top right, but apart from that I think it's the same as Ronald Born's variant 1 rear sleeve described below. The handwritten matrix numbers are the same as above.

Wouter de Wit has a copy with a faint stamp in Dutch "Niet voor de Verkoop [Not for Sale]". Hans Seegers informs me this was not used by CBS Holland for promo copies, and is probably from a library.

Ronald Born has a 1970 copy in a UK 1970 inner sleeve as shown with the same handwritten matrix numbers as mine. The rear sleeve of this copy has no symbols at top right. Ronald has a second copy which he dates around 1974 and which comes in a CBS Holland inner sleeve with text in English, German and French (but not Dutch). The rear sleeve of this copy has "B" in a circle at top right. The record of this copy has the same labels as shown but is slightly lighter than the earlier copy. It has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69001-I 2  AL 30290-IB, Side 2 - Ste-69001-B   S-64179-2 (the "S-64179-2" is much larger).

CBS S 69001 (NL), mid-1970s:

CBS S 69001 (NL) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s releases)

The mid-1970s release still has catalogue number CBS 69001, but the record now has orange/yellow CBS labels. The first copy shown has a CBS sticker on the rear sleeve which Hans Seegers says is from the transport box and shouldn't be attached to a record! The rear sleeve of this copy has "B" and "54" in circles at top right. The second copy shown has a different rear sleeve with "CB|271" in a lozenge and "57" in a circle below at top right.

CBS 32267 (NL), 1982, re-released 1985:

CBS 32267 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers (1982/85 releases both variants)

The 1982 release had a new catalogue number, CBS 32267, and the record still had orange/yellow CBS labels. There are two rear sleeve variants, the first has "CB|211" in a lozenge and "53" in a circle at top right, the second has "CB|231" in a lozenge and again "53" in a circle. The album was re-released in 1985 with a record with red CBS labels.

Columbia 32267 1 (NL), 1991:

Columbia 32267 1 (NL) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (1991 release)
The 1991 release is now on the Columbia label, not CBS. The catalogue number is now "32267 1" on the spine, rear sleeve and record labels. The front sleeve has a 1991 “DYLAN ORIGINALS NICE PRICE” sticker. The rear sleeve has some differences from the 1985 rear sleeve: there is now a barcode at top right; the "LC|0149" capsule is missing at bottom right (the record labels now have "LC|0162", the new Label Code for Columbia Records); there is a "Columbia" logo and different copyright text at bottom left.

The record has red Columbia labels and comes in an original Columbia “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve showing albums from this series. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-69001-2A-1 (stamped), 01-32267-2A-1 (handwritten), Side 2 - 69001-B (handwritten), 01-32267-B (handwritten).

"New Morning" - stereo cassette releases: CBS 40-32267 (NL), 1982; CBS/Columbia 40-32267 (NL), 1990s:
There must be a Dutch cassette release with catalogue number CBS 40-69001 - scans required!

CBS 40-32267 (NL) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Tom Willems (both releases)
This cassette release is copyrighted 1974 but must have been released no earlier than 1982 because it has the new Dutch catalogue number (see the Dutch vinyl releases above). The cassette is light grey with printed text in black, there are no paper labels.

Columbia 40-32267 (NL) - cassette Side 1 photocopy by Paul Shenton

Columbia 40-32267 (NL) - cassette Side 2 photocopy by Paul Shenton

Paul Shenton has a copy with an unusual mistake - the inside of the insert has the inside details from the Dutch Saved cassette release printed upside down! The front insert and cassette are the same as those of Tom's copy.

Paul also has a 1990s Columbia cassette that comes with the same CBS inserts as the other two copies shown. It has Columbia paper labels that have been pasted over different black text printed on the cassette!

This release does not have Bob saying "OK, here we go." at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970).

Thanks to Tom Willems and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

"New Morning" - promo stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 69 001/CBS S 64179 (West Germany); commercial stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 69 001 (West Germany), 1970:
These German releases have Bob saying "OK, here we go." at the start of the title track. New Morning was the last CBS Dylan album to be released by CBS West Germany, after this all CBS albums sold in Germany were imported from Holland. Planet Waves and Before The Flood were released in Germany in 1974, but they were then on the Asylum label, not CBS.

CBS S 69 001 (West Germany) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
Unlike the German record club editions below, the commercial release has the regular European CBS catalogue number and rear sleeve. Both the sleeve and the record were made in Germany. The sleeve is laminated on the front only. The record has orange CBS labels and comes in a generic CBS Germany inner sleeve with details of contemporary CBS albums. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-30290-1A, Side 2 - PBL-30290-1L. Gerd Rundel's white label promo release is strange because the record labels have catalogue number "S 64179" like the Spanish release below while the sleeve is the same as Manuel's commercial release and has "S 69001". The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290-1A, Side 2 - P BL-30290-1L.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS/Deutscher Schallplattenclub [German Record Club] H 132/3, reissued as CBS/Deutscher Schallplattenclub 28 132-9 (West Germany), 1970:

CBS/Deutscher Schallplattenclub H 132/3 (West Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers

This record club edition has a fully laminated sleeve, printed in Germany by Carl von der Linnepe, Lüdenscheid (the printer's name is not shown on the commercial releases). It has a unique rear sleeve with a 1960s picture of Bob at the piano, sadly omitting the 1962 rear photo with Victoria Spivey. Both releases came in the same sleeve - the reissue just has a yellow sticker at the rear top right with text "Neue Best.-Nr. 28 132-9 bisher H 132/3 [New Order Number 28 132-9 previously H 132/3]". The records have orange CBS labels: CBS H-132/3 has the text "CLUB SONDERAUFLAGE [CLUB SPECIAL EDITION]" on the right of the centre hole, CBS 28 132-9 has "DEUTSCHER SCHALLPLATTENCLUB" on the left. Detail scans of the catalogue numbers on each label are shown to compare with the promo and commercial releases above. The record of Gerd Rundel's copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290-1A, Side 2 - P BL-30290-1L (the same as Gerd's promo copy above).

"New Morning" - promo and commercial LP releases, CBS S 69001 (Italy), 16 Nov 1970, re-released mid-1970s, 1978:

CBS S 69001 (Italy) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (both 1970 releases)

The album was distributed in Italy by Distribuzione Messagerie Musicali of Milan and Rome on behalf of CBS Sugar of Milan and the laminated sleeve was printed by CBS Sugar. All the rear sleeves shown have two folded-over flaps. All the record labels are marked "STEREOMONO". The Italian text from earlier releases "PUO ESSERE SUONATO SU GIRADISCHI MONO [Can also be played on mono equipment]" is missing between "STEREO" and the CBS logo on the rear sleeve of the 1970 and 1978 releases at top right. It's much more obvious it's been overprinted on the 1978 rear sleeve. There are two variants of the 1970 plain orange CBS labels: the first has "MADE IN ITALY" at the bottom of the label and a playing speed of "33" to the left of the centre hole, on the second 1970 label both these details are missing. The record of the first copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CI 69001 1L 16/11/70, Side 2 - CI 69001 2L 16/11/70.

Hans Seegers has a 1970 promo copy with triangular holes in both disc and sleeve. The record has the same matrix numbers as the commercial copy.

The company name is still given as "CBS SUGAR".  The mid-1970s release has orange/yellow CBS labels with "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR". The 1978 record has orange/yellow CBS labels with "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" is offset where "SUGAR" has been removed. The copy shown of the 1978 record has the same matrix numbers as the 1970 commercial copy.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS S 64179 (Spain), Nov 1970, re-released 1971 (two releases), 1974, late 1970s; CBS 32267 (Spain), 1983, re-released 1986, 1989 (two releases); CBS/Sony 32267 (Spain), 1992:
No Spanish vinyl pressings of the album had the tuning/intro at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970).

CBS S 64179 (Spain), Nov 1970, 1971 (two releases):

CBS S 64179 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1970 COFASA release)

The first release of the album in Spain was by COFASA of Madrid on behalf of Discos CBS S.A. in Nov 1971. This was the last of five Dylan albums released by CBS in Spain in 1970: Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and John Wesley Harding were previously released this year. New Morning did not enter into the Spanish album charts as the other four albums did. The front sleeve had a slightly darker colour than the CBS editions, and the CBS logo was clearly visible, unlike that of the first CBS release. The sleeve was printed by Offset ALG of Madrid. The rear sleeve is identical to that of the CBS releases, although the album has a catalogue number of "64179" instead of "69001". The record labels are plain orange with a different design from the CBS copies shown. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-32190-1E, Side 2 - PBL-32190-2A.

The first CBS release of New Morning was the first release from the new CBS pressing plant in Madrid - previously Spanish releases had been manufactured by Discophon or COFASA. The sleeve was still printed by Offset ALG of Madrid. It had a light orange front sleeve on which the Columbia logo at top left was hardly visible. This was quickly withdrawn and reissued with a pale yellow front sleeve with the logo much more visible.

The track titles are translated into Spanish on the rear sleeve and the record labels. If Not For You is translated as "Si No Para Ti" which is meaningless in Spanish, the correct translation is "Si No Fuera Por Ti". A few critics wrote articles mocking this hilarious translation but it was never corrected and all the Spanish vinyl editions right up to the last reissue, have this translation. However, these articles must have had some effect and CBS Spain changed the translation of "If Not For You" in new releases in other formats: the 7" single New Morning/If Not For You (see International 7" Singles 1971) and the tape release below have the correct translation: "Si No Fuera Por Ti". The credits on the rear sleeve are also in Spanish. The records of both 1971 releases are the same and have orange CBS labels. Both copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-69001 A2, Side 2 - S 69001 B3.

The album was released in 1974 with exactly the same sleeve. The record this time had orange/yellow CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 64179-A+, Side 2 - 64179-B+. Tom Willems has a late 1970s copy where the record again has orange/yellow CBS labels but with a different text layout to the left of the centre hole as shown, omitting the arrows logo. The front sleeve has a more yellow tint, and the CBS logo is more yellow. The rear sleeve is exactly the same as the 1974 and earlier sleeves.

CBS 32267 (Spain), 1983 (two variants):

The album was re-released in 1983 with a new catalogue number, CBS 32267. The sleeve was this time printed by Indugraf of Madrid and there was no front CBS logo. The rear sleeve has the new Discos CBS S.A. address of Paseo de la Castellana, 93 - Madrid-16.

CBS S 32267 (Spain) - Side 2 scan by Lars M. Banke (1983 release variant 2 - short circumference text)

The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels and the variant 1 copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 64179-A0, Side 2 - 64179-B+ (the old catalogue number on both sides). Lars M. Banke's first copy (not shown) has the same sleeve and variant 1 labels but the record has stamped matrix numbers with the new catalogue number: Side 1 - 32267 A, Side 2 -32267 B. Lars' second copy has the same sleeve, this time with a "PRECIO REDONDO [NICE PRICE]" front sticker and variant 2 labels with shorter circumference text omitting "Impusto de lujo a metalico - permiso num. 7053". The record of this copy has confusing stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 64179 A (the old catalogue number), Side 2 - 32267 B (same as Side 2 of Lars' variant 1 copy).

CBS 32267 (Spain), 1986, 1989 (two variants):

CBS S 32267 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1986-89 releases)

After this album was released in 1983 in Spain with the new catalogue number, it was reissued at least three times in the same sleeve with red labels. The record was also made by CBS and the labels have the same typeface as those of the 1983 release, with a shorter copyright text in the circumference. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 64179 A0  S-32267A, Side 2 - 64179 B0  S-32267B. The 1989 release is almost identical to the 1986 release - the sleeve is again the same as those of the 1983 and 1986 releases, but the record was made now by Tecnodisco S.A. for Discos CBS. There are two Tecnodisco label variants, variant 1 has "TECNODISCO" in the circumference text as shown, variant 2 has "TECNODISCO" plus a telephone number in the circumference text The record of Lars' variant 1 copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32267 A 0, Side 2 - 32267 B 0. The record of Manuel's variant 2 copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-32267A, Side 2 - S-32267B.

CBS/Sony 32267 (Spain), 1992:

CBS/Sony S 32267 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1992 release)

What was probably the last Spanish vinyl release of this album was released on the CBS/Sony label in 1992 with a record that was again made by Tecnodisco S.A. Apart from this detail, this new reissue is virtually identical to the previous reissues with the new catalogue number. There are traces of a deleted catalogue number above the CBS logo on the rear sleeve, but the Discos CBS address is still Paseo de la Castellana, 93 - Madrid-16 (it should have changed to "28046-Madrid" after a postcode change). This album was first released in Spain in 1970 and the last release dates from 1992: even after twenty two years nobody corrected the absurd translation of "If Not For You" as "Si no para ti"! The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-32267A, Side 2 - S-32267B.

The very rare 1971 cassette has song titles in Spanish only on the insert, which is otherwise without credits, just information about other tapes published by CBS Spain. The cassette is white with orange paper labels (slightly skewed on Side 1!) with song titles in Spanish and English. This release is notable for various reasons: it was the second Dylan cassette published in Spain, after Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, and it was released in very limited quantities in 1971 when cassette players were still scarce in Spanish homes. In fact, CBS Spain did not release more tapes till 1974. This cassette was made by BIAS, S.A., an obscure company from Barcelona, and the quality of sound is poor. For some reason this is the only Spanish release with the tuning/intro at the start of the New Morning song (R-0071, see 1970). If Not For You is correctly translated as "Si No Fuera Por Ti" (see above).

The 1978 cassette was made by CBS itself and is of the first widely-released Spanish design, with a folded card insert with details of other CBS Spain cassette releases on the inside. The song titles are in Spanish and English on the insert, and in Spanish only on the cassette labels. The cassette is again white with orange paper labels. This time Side 1 does not include the rarity.

Note on translations: "If Not For You" has been translated correctly as "Si No Fuera Por Ti" on the left of the outside insert and the Side 1 cassette label, but wrongly translated as "Si No Para Ti" on the right of the outside insert (the part that folds under)! The same has happened to New Morning - it has been translated as "Nueva Mañana" on the left of the outside insert and on the Side 2 cassette label, but as "Otra Mañana" on the right of the outside insert (this time both translations can be correct). There is a completely different (and amusing) mistake for If Dogs Run Free - it is translated correctly as "Si Los Perros Corrieran Libres" on both sides of the outside insert, but incorrectly as "Si Los Perros Corrieran Liebres" on the Side 1 cassette label. Because "liebre" means "hare" in Spanish, "Si Los Perros Corrieran Liebres" means "If Dogs Were Chasing Hares"!

All these Japanese pressings of the album had the tuning/intro at the start of the title track (R-0071, see 1970). All releases had orange/cream CBS/Sony record labels and the promo copies shown had black/white CBS/Sony record labels.

The original 1970 release, CBS/Sony SONP 50390, had an orange and white top obi with price ¥1,800. It had a four-page insert in English and Japanese. Paul Shenton's copy is missing its obi, but it does have a front sticker "HERE IS CBS/SONY" in English at top right. Paul points out that the record sides in white text in the black left hand panel of the rear sleeve are called "Side A" and "Side B" while on most other worldwide releases they are "Side 1" and "Side 2". This is repeated on the record labels - it was common practice for the sides of Japanese records to be identified alphabetically rather than numerically. For consistency I use the convention "Side 1", "Side 2", etc. for all LP and LP-length cassette sides.

The 1974 reissue, CBS/Sony SOPL 228, had a cream top obi with price ¥2,000. It had a eight-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese.

The 1976 reissue, CBS/Sony 25AP 281 had a tan side obi with price ¥2,500 (the "25" in the new catalogue number indicates the price). It had a eight-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese. CBS/Sony 25AP 281 was reissued in early 1977 with a brown side obi and again in late 1977 with a wider brown side obi giving 1978 tour dates (the tour from which Bob Dylan At Budokan was taken). The copy shown is the early 1977 release with the narrower brown obi, scans of the other obis required.

Thanks to Wil Gielen and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS SBP-233887 (Australia), 1970 (two variants), re-released mid-1970s/late 1970s:

CBS SBP-233887 (Australia), 1970 (two variants):

CBS SBP-233887 (Australia) - front scan by Stuart Moore (1970 release)

These releases use the standard front sleeve without text. The original record has orange CBS labels and songs copyrighted to "Albert". Also shown is a 1970 copy sent to Canberra AM radio station "2CA", with stamps on the rear sleeve and Side 1. 2CA is still in existence today, playing "classic hits" for an over 45 audience.

Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright at the bottom of the labels. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

Lars M. Banke's mid-1970s copy has the same sleeve as the 1970 release but now the record has orange/yellow labels, still with the shorter copyright text and the songs still copyrighted to "Albert" on one line.

The late 1970s/1980s release has orange/yellow labels with the longer copyright text and has songs copyrighted to "Warner Bros" on one line. The front sleeve of the copy shown of the later release has a "Nice Price" sticker.

The two later releases have a short insert with the track titles inside. The 1980s release is part of the "Select" series.

The mid-1970s cassette is white with pale buff CBS paper labels. The songs are now credited to "Chappell".

The sleeve of this release has both "NEW MORNING" and "BOB DYLAN" on the front, unlike the US/UK releases, and in a completely different typeface from that on the front sleeve of the Uruguayan album below. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "KC 30290". The sleeve has “PRINTED IN USA” on the spine and the rear. The record labels are the plain red US-style with the white "STEREO"/"360° SOUND"/arrows logo with three "CBS" logos instead of "Columbia". The labels of Raja Abdul Razak's copy have Bob's name below the album title and a catalogue number of just "C 30290". Gerd Rundel also has a copy of this variant. The record of Gerd's first copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 3026790  C956 * ("67"is scratched out), Side 2- BL-30290  C957 *. Gerd Rundel has a second copy of the album with the same sleeve but with record labels that have Bob's name above the album title. These labels have the catalogue number as "KC 30290". The record of Gerd's second copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-30290, Side 2 - BL-30290.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Raja Abdul Razak for information and scans.

"New Morning" - stereo cassette release: CBS CT 30290 (Singapore/Malaysia?), 1980s:

CBS CT 30290 (Singapore/Malaysia?) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Stuart Moore
This cassette release was bought in Australia. Stuart Moore thought it was made in the USA, but as Columbia didn't use the "CBS" brand for domestic releases, this is unlikely. I'm guessing at Singapore/Malaysia. The cassette is grey and has white CBS paper labels - the Side 1 label is missing.

Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.

"New Morning" - promo stereo LP releases, Columbia/CBS KC 30290 (Philippines), 1970:

Columbia/CBS KC 30290 (Philippines) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
New Morning was probably the last Philippines Dylan album made by Mareco Inc. It has an imported Columbia US sleeve. The record was made in the Philippines and has plain orange CBS labels. The record of the copy shown has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 30290-1E, Side 2 - P BL 30290-1D.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS ASF 1554 (South Africa), 1970:

CBS ASF 1554 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (first copy)

This release uses the standard front sleeve without text. The sleeve is laminated on the front, which is light orange. The sleeve was printed in South Africa by Interpak. There are two record label variants. The record of Gerd Rundel's variant 1 copy has orange CBS labels with stamped US matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 30290-1D, Side 2 - P BL 30290-2E. The playing speed ("33") is printed differently on the record labels of Manuel García Jara's variant 2 copy, but the record has the same matrix numbers. Gerd has a second copy which comes in a plastic outer sleeve provided by Johannesburg record store Unsgaard & Samson. This record has variant 2 labels as shown for Manuel's copy. There was a 1970 Rhodesian release of New Morning but I don't have it listed yet.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

This incredibly rare album has the US catalogue number and a standard front sleeve with pale yellow border without text. The album was manufactured and distributed in India for CBS Records by the Gramophone Company of India Limited, Dum Dum, India, part of the EMI group (bought by Universal in 2012). The record has black CBS labels with silver text, the same style as the one or two singles released in India. This pressing does not have "OK, here we go." at the start of the title track.

"New Morning" - test pressings, promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS 27.035 (Uruguay), 1970:

CBS 27.035 (Uruguay), 1970 - test pressings:

CBS 27.035 (Uruguay) - test pressing front scan by Lars M. Banke (copy 1 in Sondor sleeve)

Lars M. Banke has found a test pressing made by Sondor S.A. on eBay. It comes in a generic CBS 12" sleeve with a cut-out centre and typewritten text on the rear. The record has generic CBS labels without text. Sergio Mariano Romay believes this copy has come from the archives of CX 50 “Radio Independencia” (Montevideo, Uruguay), as does an Argentinean test pressing of Blood On The Tracks on that album's page. Lars now has a second test pressing in a Sondor S.A. sleeve with handwritten song titles in Spanish on the rear. The record of this copy again has generic CBS labels with "C5" stickers this time.

NewMorningUruguayFront.jpg (23126 bytes)
CBS 27.035 (Uruguay) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (promo and commercial releases)
This rare album was made by Sondor S.A. in Uruguay on behalf of CBS. It has a unique front sleeve with the title "New Morning" and the name "Bob Dylan" in a "computer-style" type face. The normal worldwide front sleeve has no text. On the rear sleeve the CBS logo is moved inwards.

The record has orange CBS labels with song titles in Spanish and English. The album was initially released with Bob's name spelled incorrectly on the record labels as "BOD DYLAN" but this was soon corrected. The records of both Sergio Magnacca's and Manuel García Jara's copies have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 30290-1C, Side 2 - P BL 30290 1L.

Lars M. Banke also has a copy with promo stamps on the rear sleeve and Side 1 record label. On this copy "BOB DYLAN" is correct on both record labels as those of Sergio Magnacca's copy. Sergio Mariano Romay has found a copy of the commercial release with "BOB DYLAN" in an embossed CBS inner sleeve.

Thanks to Sergio Magnacca, Manuel García Jara, Lars M. Banke and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and pictures.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP, First Records FL-2021 (Taiwan), early 1970s:

This album came in a very flimsy paper sleeve that had to be protected in a plastic wallet. It was legal in Taiwan at the time but not authorised by Columbia. It is therefore listed in Questionable Releases.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 69001 (Portugal), 1971 (two releases):

CBS S 69001 (Portugal) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

Very few Dylan albums were released in Portugal during the dictatorships of Dr. Antonio Salazar followed by Marcelo Caetano, but this one was released in 1971. It has a laminated sleeve similar to the Dutch release with the addition of the Portuguese printer's information "LITARTE - OLIV. DOURO" at bottom left of the rear sleeve. The record was made in Portugal and has dark orange CBS labels. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - LP-00-459-A plus "PORTUGAL" opposite, Side 2 - LP-S-00-459-B.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS 137.706 (Brazil), 1971:

CBS 137.706 (Brazil) - front with "Stereo" sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke
Although I have received information about a Brazilian stereo release, CBS 137.706, Manuel García Jara has never seen one, and this isn't it! The album comes in a mono sleeve with "Stereo" stickers on the front and rear. The orange CBS record labels are exactly the same as those of the mono release, with the same "37706" mono catalogue number. The matrix numbers are very hard to read. Lars M. Banke has now confirmed that the copy shown is in mono, not stereo. Keith Venturoni has a copy of the mono album and thinks the record is actually stereo, not mono as stated on the sleeve. John Harju confirms that his mono copy is also stereo.

"New Morning" - stereo vinyl LP: CBS S 69001 (Greece), 1973, reissued 1982; CBS 32267 (Greece), 1983:

CBS S 69001 (Greece) - front scan by Hans Seegers (1973 release, 1980s releases are identical)

The 1973 record has dark-red "original first pressing" CBS labels with "MADE IN GREECE" and stamped matrix numbers AL 30290 A/B. The title track does not have the tuning/intro at the start. Although the album is official it was released during the Greek colonels' regime when Bob was banned in Greece and was therefore distributed "underground" by an Athens company called Music-box.

The 1982 record has orange/yellow CBS labels including Greek text and comes in the 1982 CBS 32267 Dutch sleeve. The title track does have the tuning/intro at the start (R-0071). The equivalent Dutch record has catalogue number "CBS 32267" on the labels, the same as the sleeve. The 1983 rear sleeve is the same as the 1982 CBS 32267 Dutch sleeve except for “CB/231” instead of “CB/211” in a printed capsule at top right below the CBS logo. The record now has "CBS 32267" on the record labels. Unlike on the previous labels, “NEW MORNING” and “BOB DYLAN” are written side by side. The Side 2 label has a misprint - “Sing On The Window” instead of Sign On The Window. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32267 A, Side 2 - 32267 B.

Columbia CK 30290 (USA) - front of "long box", scan by Hans Seegers
The late 1980s CD release of the album in the USA came in the "long box" shown, which is still sealed, with a "Nice Price" sticker on the front of the box. Stuart Moore's early 1990s copy doesn't have a long box, but has the "Nice Price" sticker on the front of the jewel case. Paul Shenton has a copy of the same release without the "Nice Price" front sticker.

The Canadian release shown was still on sale in Canada until 2009. The disc in Jack's copy was made in Canada. Moise Potié's disc, bought in the late 1990s, was presumably made in the USA as it doesn't have the "MADE IN CANADA" text below the Columbia logo. Father Of Night is mistitled as "Fathers Of Night" on all the discs!

These four releases have minimal artwork, the front insert is a single card. All the inserts have "CBS" but the 1990s CDs have "Columbia". The 1980s release is in the "Select" series and the CD itself was made in Australia by Disctronics Limited. Stuart Moore's first 1990s release has a CD made in Australia by Sony with the Sony information on three lines to the right of the centre hole.

Columbia/Sony Music 88697082302 (Austria for Europe) - front of digipak with sticker (my copy)
The limited edition of this remastered release comes in a digipak which will be replaced by a standard jewel case when reprinted. The front of the digipak has a release-specific limited edition yellow sticker with black text. There is an eight-page stapled booklet. Both the digipak and the booklet have new pictures. The CD has the Columbia US 1970s record label design.

The title track does not have "OK, here we go" at the beginning as on early releases of the vinyl album (R-0071, see 1970).

The US release is slightly different in that the front sticker has the catalogue number followed by "-S1". The rear of the digipak does not have "Sony Music" at bottom left, but does have the FBI Anti-Piracy logo at bottom right.

The album was released in a jewel case with a clear CD tray and the eight page stapled booklet as the front insert. The catalogue number is now 88697347002.  The CD has the same Columbia US 1970s record label design. Tom Willems' CD looks exactly the same as my CD above except for the catalogue number.

Paul Shenton's copy comes in the same packaging as Tom Willems' copy, but the CD is slightly different - this time there is no catalogue number printed to the left of the centre hole.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK11" plus "DISC 12". The CDs are different in detail, the US New Morning CD has catalogue number "88691924312D12", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-12". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
