Self Portrait
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Revised 20 February, 2024.
Original US stereo vinyl 2LP set, Columbia C2X 30050, 8 Jun 1970. The front sleeve design is a painting by Bob himself - neither Bob's name nor the album title appear on the front sleeve of the US and most other worldwide releases. The photographs on the back and inside the gatefold sleeve show Bob at Woodstock, at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969, and in Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, recording the album. The album on the right has been signed by Bob, all five members of The Band, Charlie Daniels and Charlie McCoy, picture from "Isis" 170. This album did not have a separate mono mix, but a mono version reduced from stereo was released in some countries - for this see Mono Album Releases. Because of the length of this page, Self Portrait CD releases are now here. Tracklisting:
Out-takes from this album are: Dylan (1973): A Fool Such As I (R-0099), Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (band version, R-0096). For both see 1973. (For R-0072, the solo version of Spanish Is The Loving Tongue, New Morning out-take released as a single B-side, see 1971). This take is different from the take released in 2013 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)!Many more out-takes from this album are included on The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), released in Aug 2013. Wigwam (unreleased demo version) and a cover of Eric Andersen's Thirsty Boots, both recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 4 Mar 1970, were included on a limited edition stereo 7" single released in the USA and Europe on Record Store Day, 20 Apr 2013. The 4CD limited edition of this album includes a disc with the full 17 song performance by Bob Dylan and The Band from the Isle Of Wight Festival, 31 Aug 1969, from which Like A Rolling Stone, The Mighty Quinn, Minstrel Boy and She Belongs To Me appear on this 1970 release. The original handbill from Manuel García Jara for the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival (10" x 5¼") has a picture of Bob from Nashville Skyline on the front with a list of the artists performing on both days, while the rear includes a form to use to order tickets. A two day ticket cost £2 10s (£2.50!). |

Even more out-takes are included on the very limited 2CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1969 (see 2019), while Alligator Man appears in three versions among other Self Portrait out-takes on the equally limited Dec 2020 3CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1970 (see 2020). |
The West Houston Street Acetates, 2014
124 West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, New York City |
Thanks to Jeff Gold, Bruce Mulle, Arie de Reus and several others for news of 149 Dylan acetates from the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era that were found in a New York building in West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, that was once rented by Bob as a studio. These have been named "The West Houston Street Acetates" and contain many unreleased versions of Dylan songs from the period. Some are listed on the 2014 page. For full details, see here. |

The 10" acetate with the live performance of Like A Rolling Stone (R-1099) is the version recorded at Dylan's 1969 concert at the Isle of Wight and released on Self Portrait. The label specifies this as "Cut 3" and the version here is a different mix than on the commercially released album, with Bob's voice much further down in the mix. There are two labels on the disc, the visible one covering up another, also with handwriting visible on it--it's likely the first had a mistake on it, so a second corrected one was placed over it.
The version of Belle Isle from Self Portrait, here called "Bright Star Of Belle Isle" (R-1097), on the 45 RPM acetate shown sounds very close to the take from the recent The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), having a different mix but the same spoken intro. However, immediately after the song Dylan clearly says: "Always wanted to have done that, it's one of my favourites... Let's just try this one".
The version of Alberta #2 (R-1108) is the album track from Self Portrait without overdubs, a shorter intro and an extra 5 secs at the end - still unreleased.
Wigwam is the album track from Self Portrait (identified as "Cut #4") with a different mix, considered by Jeff Gold to be superior to the released version. "Cut 3" is a different mix again, with minimal vocals.
The version of Early Morning Rain is again the album track from Self Portrait without overdubs, again considered by Jeff Gold to be superior to the released version.
Arie de Reus has an acetate of Woogie Boogie containing the basic track with just piano and guitar.
The version of In Search Of Little Sadie, listed as "Ball & Stripe Rag" is an alternate take of track from the "West Houston Street Acetates", 2014, a different mix of which was released on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), 2013.
Self Portrait sessions Side 1, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
This is the only double sided acetate in the batch, with eight tracks from the 26 Apr 1969 and 3 May 1969 Self Portrait recording sessions, Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN. Side 2 has unreleased versions of Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire (both with full electric band.) All other songs are alternate mixes to the released versions and have been allocated R-numbers. |

R-1100 Let It Be Me (Pierre Delanoë/Gilbert Bécaud/M. Curtis) - album track from Self Portrait with different mix
R-1101 I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know (Cecil A. Null) - album track from Self Portrait with different mix
R-1102 Living The Blues - album track from Self Portrait with different mix
R-1103 Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go) (Boudleaux Bryant) - album track from Self Portrait with different mix
R-1104 Take A Message To Mary (Felice Bryant/Boudleaux Bryant) - album track from Self Portrait with different mix
R-1105 Blue Moon (Lorenz Hart/Richard Rodgers) - album track from Self Portrait with different mix
R-1106 Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash) - unreleased out-take from Self Portrait, now released in 2019 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 - Travelin' Thru 1967-1969
R-1107 Ring Of Fire (June Carter/Merle Kilgore) - unreleased out-take from Self Portrait, now released in 2019 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 - Travelin' Thru 1967-1969
For all these rarities see 2014.
Self Portrait acetate Side 1, scan by Jeff Gold, Record Mecca |
The first 12″ one-sided acetate in a buff Transco sleeve features an alternate sequence of Side One of Self Portrait - it was previously owned by Bob and used during the making of that album. On the sleeve Dylan has handwritten three lines of unpublished lyrics: The sky turns yellow, birds fly away/The earth’s so mellow, what more is there to say/Lucky’s on the hill but I’m still on that road. |

The three single-sided acetates on the left contain Sides 2 (two variants) and Side 3 of an alternate sequence of Self Portrait. All tracks could be the released mixes. The two variants of Side 2 have the same tracklist - "Ball & Stripes Rag" was the recording sessions title of Little Sadie. Side 3 has Bob Johnston's handwriting on the sleeve.
Tracklisting:
Side 2: Let It Be Me; "Ball & Stripes Rag" (Little Sadie); Woogie Boogie; Living The Blues; Belle Isle; Like A Rolling Stone (live). (Living The Blues is track 4 instead of track 5, so Belle Isle becomes track 5)
Side 3: The Mighty Quinn (live); Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go); Copper Kettle; Gotta Travel On; Blue Moon; The Boxer; (The Mighty Quinn and Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go) are tracks 1 and 2 instead of tracks 5 and 6, so the other tracks are 3-6).
Intermediate Acetates:

sleeve. In Search of Little Sadie is here titled "The Ball & The Stripes".

This next set of four single-sided acetates on the right (variant 4) contains the Self Portrait album with its final mixes, but with the tracks in a slightly different order from that released. This set is later than the previous acetates because Little Sadie now has its released name. There was a rumour that the remastered Self Portrait with the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) would be in the original sequence, this may be it. |

13. Running (2:27)*
* Running was thought to possibly be the 1956 country song Running Away by Floyd Tillman - it's now revealed to be a previously unreleased song by Bob, although based on the Tillman song! It was recorded for Self Portrait but not used, then planned to appear on the 1973 Dylan album, but finally dropped. It also didn't make The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) in 2013!

The 1970 and 1971 releases have textured gatefold sleeves, later releases have smooth sleeves.
Stuart Moore has a hardback US songbook that was originally an Australian library copy. It has a sticker on the front similar to the album sticker.
Renaud Depierreux has a radio promo copy with the red on white sticker and the timing strip for LP1 on the front and the timing strip for LP2 on the back. The record labels are the 1970s design with handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504-1C, Side 2 - XSM 153505-1D, Side 3 - XSM 153506-1B, Side 4 - XSM 153507-1B. Renaud also has a commercial copy where LP1 has a red 1960s style US label and LP2 has a Canadian red 1960s style label! These records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504-1B, Side 2 - XSM 153505-1C, Side 3 - XSM 153506-1K, Side 4 - XSM 153507-1M.
Record labels: 1970 release:
The 1970 record labels have the "360 SOUND" label style. On Side 1 the song titles are on nine lines, all the song titles are in upper case except the "Know" of I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, Days Of '49 is uncredited.
Record labels: 1971 release 1:
Jeremy Mayle, Frank, Gerd Rundel and Stuart Moore have US copies with the later 1970s label style with the Columbia logo in a ring. Most US first pressings have this style, but Jon McAuliffe says the mid-west Columbia pressing plant had stocks of the old labels to use up first!
The Side 1 record label has the song titles on nine lines, all the song titles are in upper case except the "Know" of I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, Days Of '49 is again uncredited.

Side 1 of the second 1971 release with new style labels has the song titles on ten lines, all the song titles are in upper case, Days of '49 is now correctly credited to "F. Warner - J.A. Lomax - A. Lomax". "F. Warner" is Frank Warner (1903-78), a North Carolina singer, banjoist and folk music collector who performed solo and with his wife Anne from the 1930s to the end of the 1960s. Shown on the right is his 1952 Elektra album Frank Warner Sings American Folk Songs And Ballads (Elektra EKLP 3) including Days Of '49 (called The Days Of "49") - see here. Thanks to Tim Dunn for information that Big Sky Music asserted a claim to copyright for the song as "Revised melody and new music by Bob Dylan" on 9 Sep 1970. This copyright was never listed on Self Portrait record labels and was withdrawn by Big Sky in 1975. Days of '49 is credited today on bobdylan.com to "F. Warner - J.A. Lomax - A. Lomax". However, the 2013 notes for The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) wrongly credit Days Of '49, which appears without overdubs on CD2, as "Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan". |

Record labels: 1971 release 3:
Side 1 of the third 1971 "new style label"
release has the song titles
on nine lines, all the song titles are in upper case, Days Of '49 is now uncredited
again.
This
copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504-1L, Side 2 - XSM

(USA) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s release)
Side 1 of the late 1970s release has the song titles on thirteen lines, all the song titles are in upper case, Days Of '49 is still uncredited on Side 1. The records of Gerd Rundel's late 1970s copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504-1H, Side 2 - XSM 153505-1F, Side 3 - XSM 153506-1H, Side 4 - XSM 153507-1H.
Michael Ventimiglia has a copy where the records have the later 1970s label style with the Columbia logo in a ring with classical music on Side 4! This mispressing has been discussed on the Steve Hoffman Forum. The records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504-1G, Side 2 - XSM 153505-1F, Side 3 - XSM 153506-1C, Side 4 - XSM 152507-1A. I have tried to find the correct Columbia US album with one side with matrix number XSM 152507-1A, but have not yet succeeded (nor have contributors to the Steve Hoffman Forum).

This
release dates from the late 1980s, possibly early 1990s. The sleeve now
has a barcode and just "30050" inside the Columbia logo at rear top
right. The spine has "CG 30050" while previous releases have "C2X
30050". The front sleeve has "(C) 1970 BOB DYLAN" printed vertically at
bottom left. I don't have details of the records that came with the
sleeve illustrated, but the copy shown on Discogs has records with C2X
30050 labels that are the same as 1971 release 2 above, with writer
credits for Days Of 49 on Side 1. |

Like the US release, the original Canadian release of this album had red 1960s style Columbia labels with the white "STEREO/360° SOUND" logo (this is the first time the white logo was used on a Canadian Dylan record, even though it was first used for the labels of Highway 61 Revisited in 1965 in the USA). Lars M. Banke has a second mid-1970s copy that this time has a sleeve without a front sticker and where the Columbia logos have not been obscured. This time the record labels have black ring-shaped stickers covering the ring of Columbia logos. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504 – 1J, Side 2 – XSM 153505 1a – 2D, Side 3 – XSM 153506 – 2A – 2X, Side 4 – XSM 153507 – 1 A – 2 H, D, K.

This album comes in a similar gatefold sleeve to that of the US release, my copy was printed in England by Garrod and Lofthouse International Limited. The catalogue number on the spine and rear sleeve is "CBS 66250". The copy from Eil.com has a gold foil sticker on the rear of the gatefold sleeve with price "59/11" (£2 9s 11d or £2.49 today). Gerd Rundel's copy has this sticker on the front, as well as an information sticker. |

The records have orange CBS labels with two catalogue numbers: on left - 66250, on right S 64085 (Record 1), S 64086 (Record 2), and my copy (variant 1) has stamped matrix numbers: Record 1: Side 1 - S 64085 A2 S 66250 A2, Side 2 - S 64085 B2 S 66250 B2; Record 2: Side 3 - S 64086 A1 S 66250 C1, Side 4 - S 64086 B2 S 66250 D2. Sandra Bishop has a copy of this release where Record 2 has the same matrix numbers as mine, while Record 1 has: Side 1 - S 64085 A1 S 66250 A1, Side 2 - S 64085 B1 S 66250 B1. On Side 1 Days Of 49 is credited to "Traditional", not Frank Warner and the Lomaxes as the US copies above. On Side 3 Copper Kettle is credited to "Traditional" - it should be "A. F. Beddoe" (Albert Frank Beddoe).
Gerd Rundel has two copies that come in the Garrod and Lofthouse sleeve. The first copy has double pressing rings on Sides 1-3, Side 4 is the same as mine. The second copy is the same as mine on Sides 1-3 but Side 4 has differently positioned text including that to the left of the centre hole as shown in the detail scans.
Simon Blokker has a copy of the UK release of Self Portrait, S 66250 S 64085/86, with plain orange record labels. The sleeve was not printed by Garrod and Lofthouse International Limited, but by MacNeill Press Ltd, London SE1, see detailed scans. The labels are the same as mine, although the printing of the text around the centre hole is higher, most noticeably on Side 1. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 64085 A2 S 66250 A2, Side 2 - S 64085 B1 S 66250 B1, Side 3 - S 64086 A1 S 66250 C1, Side 4 - S 64086 B1 S 66250 D1.
Shown above is a flyer for the album distributed by CBS to record shops - this was acquired by Henry V. Bell when he worked at Shear's Records in Belfast in 1970.
The paper inner sleeve is the same for both records and is generic. The front contains illustrations of CBS albums of the time, including Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel, Al Kooper & Mike Bloomfield, and Taj Mahal. The reverse is the same as the 1969 sleeve shown for the UK release of Nashville Skyline, with the eight point propaganda piece about buying music on vinyl records.
The second paper inner sleeve, also from 1970, comes from another Dylan album that I bought on vinyl at that time (to replace one in my album collection which was stolen in May 1968). The front shows albums with the theme "Heavy on CBS" (The Byrds, Janis Joplin, Blood Sweat & Tears, Soft Machine, etc.), The rear shows more albums with the theme "Sounds of the 70s on CBS" (Leonard Cohen, The Chambers Brothers, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Al Kooper, etc.). Again the rear sleeve shows the then CBS postal address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1.
Christopher Burton says: "I have a UK copy of Self Portrait with what I suspect are very first pressing stamped matrices: Record 1: Side 1 - S 64085 A1 S 66250 A1, Side 2 - S 64085 B1 S 66250 B1, Record 2: Side 3 - S 64086 A1 S 66250 C1, Side 4 - S 64086 B1 S 66250 D1. The cover also has a 2" diameter round gold sticker on the back saying "Recommended Retail Price // Two Record Set // 59'11 // This Label Is Removable". I also have a UK copy of Self Portrait on later CBS "sunburst" labels. The stamped matrices are: Record 1: Side 1 - S 64085 A2 S 66250 A2, Side 2 - S 66250 B3 CBS S 64085 B3, Record 2: Side 3 - S 64086 A1 S 66250 C1, Side 4 - S 66250 D3. The sleeve looks very similar to the earlier UK issue but without the Garrod and Lofthouse printing credit on the rear and with "© Bob Dylan (1970)" on the front sleeve portrait in the bottom right corner."
CBS 66250 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (alternate sleeve -
"E. J. Day Group")
The inside of the gatefold sleeve is the same as my listed copy. The paper inner sleeve is identical to my first listed inner sleeve above with the rear same as in 1969, and is the same for both records. The record labels are also the same as those of my copy. The first release matrix numbers are the same as those of Christopher Burton's copy.
CBS 66250/S 64085-86 (UK), mid 1970s releases (three variants):
CBS 66250 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid/late 1970s releases)
The records
of the mid 1970s UK release have orange/yellow CBS labels, introduced for
the first time with The Basement Tapes in 1975. This time the
gatefold sleeve is an "Interpak II" made in England by Shorewood Packaging
Co. Ltd. The front of the gatefold sleeve has “© Bob Dylan (1970)” printed
vertically in the lower right hand corner, not present on the front of the
1970 release. The CBS logo and catalogue number on the rear of the sleeve at
top right are the same, but the bottom copyright text is completely
different. On the Side 1 record label Days Of 49 is now credited to Frank
Warner, but on the Side 3 record label Copper Kettle is still wrongly credited to "Traditional".
The catalogue number is "66250" on the left (big text) and "S 64085/6" on
the right. The
records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 64085 A2,
S 66250 A2, Side 2 - S 64085 B1, S 66250 B1, Side 3 - S 64086
A1, S 66250
C1, Side 4 - S 64086 B, S 66250 D3.
This second variant of the mid 1970s release comes in the same gatefold sleeve as the already listed copy for the mid/late 1970s releases. The record labels have different song title and copyright layouts, although they still have "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom and as yet no "LC|0149" capsule. On the Side 1 record label Days Of 49 is correct, but on the Side 3 record label Copper Kettle is still wrongly credited to "Traditional". The records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 64085 A1, S 66250 A1, Side 2 - S 66250 B3, CBS S 64085 B3, Side 3 - S 64086 A1, S 66250 C1, Side 4 - S 64086 B, S 66250 D3.
This third variant of the mid 1970s release comes in the same gatefold sleeve as my 1970 release (printed by Garrod and Lofthouse International Limited). The record labels still have "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom and as yet no "LC|0149" capsule. As well as typeface and positioning differences, "Record x of a 2-Record Set" is missing from above the album title, and "S 64085/86 A/B" is now below ”66250” to the left of the centre hole, unlike on the first two mid 1970s variants. The records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 64085 A2, S 66250 A2, Side 2 - S 64085 B1, S 66250 B1, Side 3 - S 64086 A1, S 66250 C1, Side 4 - S 66250 D3.
CBS 66250/S 64085-86 (UK), late 1970s releases (two variants):
The two late 1970s UK releases have the same gatefold sleeve as two mid 1970s releases with sleeves printed by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. The records again have orange/yellow CBS labels, with a later design with "LC|0149" in a capsule to the right of the centre hole.
The labels of the first late 1970s release have the "LC|0149" capsule high at top right and "MADE IN ENGLAND" still at the bottom of the label. The catalogue number on the right is "66250". "Record x of a 2-Record Set" has been removed from above the album title and is now left of the centre hole, replacing the stereo arrows. On the Side 2 label Belle Isle is correct, unlike on the next release. The records of the first late 1970s copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 64085 A2 (stamped), S 66250 A2 (stamped), Side 2 - S 64085 B2 (stamped), S 66250 B2 (stamped), Side 3 - S 64086 A2 (stamped), S 66250 C2 (stamped), Side 4 - CBS-S-64086-B-5 (handwritten), 66250-D-5 (handwritten).
The labels of the second late 1970s release have the "LC|0149" capsule at centre right and "MADE IN ENGLAND" has been moved from the bottom of the label to the circumference text as the 1987 release below. The catalogue number is "66250" on the left (small text) and "S 64085/6" on the right. "Record x of a 2-Record Set" is now absent but the stereo arrows have returned. The Side 2 record label has a typing error on track 4, “BE LE ISLE”, not present on the first late 1970s Side 2 label. The records of the second late 1970s copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-64085-A3 (handwritten), 66250 A3 (stamped); Side 2 - CBS-S-64085-B4 (handwritten), 66250 B4 (stamped); Side 3 - 64086 (handwritten), CBS 66250 A3 (handwritten), Side 4 - CBS-S-64086-B-5 (handwritten), 66250-D-5 (handwritten).

CBS S 66250 (NL), Jul 1970, re-released 1975, late 1970s and 1985:
All the sleeves and records were made in Holland. The records have plain inner sleeves. The 1970 sleeve was laminated and was printed in Holland. There are no printer details. The 1975, late 1970s and 1985 "Interpak II" sleeves are not laminated and were printed in Holland by Shorepak, who made many of the UK sleeves.
The four rear sleeves are different at top right and bottom right, and the differences are shown above. The 1970 records have orange CBS labels with catalogue number "S 66250". The 1975 and late 1970s records have orange/yellow CBS labels with catalogue number just "66250" (no "S") and matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 01-66250-1A2 (stamped), Side 2 - S 66250-2B? (handwritten), Side 3 - 01-66250-1C-2 (stamped), Side 4 - S 66250-B4? (handwritten - the handwritten characters are difficult to read). The 1985 records have red CBS labels, again with catalogue number just "66250". On Side 1 Days of '49 is credited to "F. Warner - J.A. Lomax - A. Lomax" as on the US releases. On Side 3 of the 1970 release Copper Kettle is uncredited, on the later releases it's correctly credited to "A. F. Beddoe" (Albert Frank Beddoe).
Lars M. Banke has a Dutch copy bought in Stockholm with a gold CBS Records Sweden promo stamp on the rear sleeve at top right. The sleeve is the same as Hans Seegers' 1985 release with "CB|252" and "62" below the CBS logo at rear top right. However, the orange/yellow record labels are the same as Gerd Rundel's 1970s releases above. This copy must date from the early 1980s before the red record labels were introduced.

These two releases have catalogue number is "460112 4" and on the inserts "Chrome Tape" and "Dolby B NR" logos have been added. "BIEM/STEMRA" on inside of the insert and on the cassette indicates a Dutch release. The cassette is black with dark red CBS paper labels and was made in Holland.
The 1990s release now has a Columbia insert, but the cassette is still the same with dark red CBS labels. Do copies exist with Columbia cassettes? Inside the 1990s Columbia release there is a double-sided folded paper advertising leaflet for "Dylan Originals Nice Price"’ with a list of mid-priced albums and cassettes, dated around 1991.

CBS S 66250 (West
Germany) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel
The records have orange CBS labels with individual catalogue numbers CBS S 64 085 and CBS S 64 086. They have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 27 0654 220 S1, S 64085 S1, Side 2 - 27 0654 220 S2, S 64085 S2, Side 3 - 27 0654 221 S1, S 64086 S1, Side 4 - 27 0654 221 S2, S 64086 S2, plus “P 1970” stamped on each side. On Side 3 Copper Kettle is wrongly credited to "None" - it should be to "A. F. Beddoe" (Albert Frank Beddoe). Manuel García Jara has two copies with the same record labels as the copy from Gerd Rundel. One has the gold sticker on the front as above.
Gerd also has a German white label promo copy. It has “Unverkäufliche Musterplatte [Sample Disc Not for Sale]” printed right of the centre hole on each record label. It comes in a fully laminated gatefold sleeve with the same golden “CBS-STAR-SERIE” sticker on the front as Manuel's copy shown. The records of this copy also have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 27 0654 220 S1, S 64085 S1, Side 2 - 27 0654 220 S2, S 64085 S2, Side 3 - 27 0654 221 S1, S 64086 S1, Side 4 - 27 0654 221 S2, S 64086 S2, plus “P 1970” stamped on each side.

"Self Portrait" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, CBS S 66250 (NL for West Germany), 1972:
"Self Portrait" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, CBS S 66250/CBS S 64085-86 (France), 1970 (three releases):
CBS S 66250 (France) -
detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (first and second releases - "F" vertically on
right)
CBS S 66250 (France) -
detail of rear, scan by Simon Blokker (third release - different printer
details, "F" vertically on
right, text on left not shown is the same as above)
The first release has a black printed circle to the left of the CBS logo at rear top right, the second release has a gold oval sticker with "2xT" below the logo and catalogue number. This may mean "2 Taille" or "2 Parts" or may be a price code. The background of the rear of the second release gatefold sleeve has a noticeably darker section to the right and top - this colour difference is shown on the second rear detail scan.
The records of all three releases have orange CBS labels with individual catalogue numbers CBS S 64085 and CBS S 64086. The major difference is that each record label of the first release has the logo of the Dutch copyright organisation "BIEM" to the right of the centre hole, while on the second and third release labels this is "SACEM", the French organisation. A minor difference is that on the Side 1 label of the second release the "Stereo mono" lozenge to the left of the centre hole has a vertical bar on its left. This is missing from the first and third release Side 1 labels and all sets of Sides 2-4 labels, so may be a printing fault. The second release labels shown are a darker orange, but this may just be a scanner difference. The records of the first two copies shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 64085 A, Side 2 - CBS S 64085 B, Side 3 - CBS S 64086 A, Side 4 - CBS S 64086 B. The records of my first release copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 64085 A plus "GP" in a circle, Side 2 - CBS S 64085 B, Side 3 - CBS S 64086 A, Side 4 - CBS S 64086 B plus "GP" in a circle. These are probably the same as the other copies.
Simon Blokker has a copy of what must be a third release. It has a different rear sleeve and record labels. The rear sleeve now has "2x(C)" below the logo and catalogue number at top right. The sleeve was still printed by France-Imprimerie but their details are now different and in upper case instead of upper/lower case. The record labels again have "SACEM" to the right of the centre hole but there are significant differences from the first and second releases: to the left of the centre hole "FACE 1/2" is now the top line and "33 T." is now the bottom line; to the right of the centre hole "S 64085"/"S 64086" are now "CBS 64085"/"CBS 64086". The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 64085 A GP (not in a circle), Side 2 - CBS S 64085 B, Side 3 - CBS S 64086 A GP (not in a circle), Side 4 - CBS S 64086 B.

"Self Portrait" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, CBS S 66250/CBS S 64085-86 (Italy), 23 Jun 1970, re-released early 1970s, mid-1970s, late 1970s:
This set was manufactured in Italy with a laminated outer sleeve and matt inner gatefold with no folded-over flaps printed by Stampa Reparto Grafica C.G.D. The slots in the gatefold sleeve for the records are inside at the centre, not on the outside edges. The album was distributed in Italy by Distribuzione Messagerie Musicali of Milan and Rome. The 1970 records have orange CBS labels with "MADE IN ITALY" at the bottom and are individually numbered CBS S 64085 and 64086. The 1970 records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CI 64085 1L, Side 2 - CI 64085 2L, Side 3 - CI 64086 1L, Side 4 - CI 64086 2L. The records also have "23-6-70" (23 Jun 1970) written in the vinyl on each side, presumably the mastering date. The three later releases all come in the same gatefold sleeve as the 1970 records.
Lars M. Banke has an early 1970s copy where the records still have orange CBS labels. Record 1 has mixed labels - Side 1 is the same as the 1970 Side 1 label with "MADE IN ITALY" at the bottom, but Side 2 has a later design with "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR S.p.A." in the circumference text at upper right. Record 2 has both labels in this style. These records have the same handwritten matrix numbers as the 1970 records with the same mastering date. Lars has now found a second early 1970s copy where all the orange record labels have "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR S.p.A." in the circumference text including Side 1. This copy is now shown.
Lars M. Banke has two mid/late 1970s copies where the records now have orange/yellow CBS labels. The records of the mid-1970s copy have labels with "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR" relocated to the bottom as shown. The records of the late 1970s copy have labels with "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" again at the bottom, but still aligned as if "SUGAR" were present. These records all have the same handwritten matrix numbers as the 1970 records.

The next release was made around 1973 by Discos CBS S.A. themselves, but the records still have orange CBS labels with the Spanish album title plus song titles in Spanish and English, in a different typeface from that of the labels of the 1970 Fonogram release. These records come in exactly the same sleeve and have the same matrix numbers as those of the 1970 Fonogram release.
CBS S 66250 (Spain) - 1975 release (three variants):
Lars M. Banke has a copy in the
same sleeve with the same pink sticker on the front (this time with the addition
of handwritten initials). The record labels are a second variant (2A) with "33⅓
r.p.m." printed above "ESTEREO"/arrows to the
left of the centre hole. On the variant 1 labels just "33⅓
r.p.m." is printed to the right of "ESTEREO"/arrows.
The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504 1 L
(handwritten), Side 2 - XSM 153505 1 L (handwritten) , Side 3 - XSM 153506 1 AB
(stamped), Side 4 - XSM 153509 1 J (handwritten). Lars has also found a
third variant online (2B) with the same text layout to
the left of the centre hole but to the right of the centre hole "SGAE" is
printed immediately above "Depósito Legal", not midway between the catalogue
number and "Depósito Legal" s it is on variants 1 and 2A.
CBS S 66250 (Spain) - 1975/1978 mixed label release:
The record labels of this release are surprising, in that the labels for record 1 are the same as the 1975 release, but the labels for record 2 are completely different! They have a different text layout and type face and as can be seen from the details to the left of the centre hole, on record 1 the sides are labelled "Cara A" and "Cara B", there is an arrows logo under ESTEREO" and the playing speed is printed to the right of "ESTEREO" and the arrows logo. On record 2 the Sides are labelled "Cara 3" and "Cara 4", there is no arrows logo and the playing speed is now below "ESTEREO" to the right. Manuel thinks CBS used sleeves and record 1s from stock and just ordered new copies of record 2! (The same situation occurs with the 1978 Spanish release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II.) The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 153504-1AB, Side 2 - XSM 153505-1AB, Side 3 - XSM 153506-1AB, Side 4 - XSM 153507-1AB.
CBS S 66250 (Spain) - 1975/1978 mixed
sleeve/labels release:
CBS S 66250 (Spain) - 1980 release:
Curiouser and curiouser! The record labels of the 1980 release revert to the 1975 design! (The same situation occurs with the 1980 Spanish release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II.) The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-153504-1AB, Side 2 - 66250-1-B0, Side 3 - 66250-1-C0, Side 4 - XSM-153507-1AB.
CBS S 66250 (Spain) - 1986 release:
The 1986 release has the same gatefold sleeve as the 1980 release, again with the album title in Spanish and the song titles in Spanish and English. The records now have red CBS labels, numbered as sides 1 and 2 for both record 1 and record 2. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 66250-A0, Side 2 - 66250-1-B0, Side 3 - 66250-C0, Side 4 - XSM 153507-1AB.

"Autorretrato [Self Portrait]" - stereo 2 cassette set, CBS 40-66250 (Spain), 1976:
This
release comes on two separate cassettes. The album title is given as
Autorretrato on both the inserts and the cassette labels and is not
translated. Each cassette has a folded insert which has the same details of
other CBS Spain cassette releases on the inside. The Discos CBS address is Calle
Princesa 1, Madrid-1 and Desire is still not listed on the insert.
The song titles on the inserts are in Spanish and English - Days Of '49 is
translated as "Dias Del 49" but the English title is wrongly printed as "Days of
40"! The inserts were printed in Spain by Gráficas Dauco. The
cassettes are white with orange CBS labels dated 1976 and the song titles are in
Spanish only. On the Side 4 label Felice Bryant's name is misspelled as "F.
Fryant".

"Self Portrait" - stereo vinyl 2LP sets, CBS 66250 (Greece), 1970; CBS 66250 (NL/Greece), 1975; CBS 460112 1 (Greece), late 1980s:
CBS 66250 (Greece), 1970:
CBS 66250 (Greece) -
detail of rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara (1970 release)
The 1970 2LP set with gatefold sleeve is the rarest of all Dylan albums released in Greece during the Colonels' regime. Like other records of this period, this was made by "Music-box" of Athens and printed by Fotiadis & Ioannidis, also of Athens. This record was also the first Dylan double album released in Greece as Blonde On Blonde was not released there until the mid-1970s. Like Nashville Skyline, the sleeve and label design of this album are based on the French release. The outside of the gatefold sleeve has the same CBS logo as the French sleeve. The rear of the gatefold sleeve has text in English and Greek at the bottom. The inner gatefold sleeve is standard. The record labels are dark orange with "Volume 1" and "Volume 2" instead of "Record 1" and "Record 2"". If you compare the labels of the French and Greek releases of this album, you will see that both albums have Sides 1 and 2 with "BIEM", Side 3 with "BIEM" "CHAPPELL" "FRANCIS DAY" and Side 4 with "BIEM" "CHAPPELL". On Side 3 Copper Kettle is uncredited. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 64085 A, Side 2 - S 64085 B, Side 3 - S 64086 A, Side 4 - S 64086 B.

CBS/Sony 40AP 279-80 has a side obi with price ¥4,000
(the "40" in the catalogue number indicates the price). It was released three times: first in 1976 with
a dark red
side obi, secondly in early 1977 with a brown side obi, and
thirdly in late 1977 with a wider brown side obi giving Japanese
tour dates in Feb-Mar 1978.
Again there was
an 8-page stapled booklet unique to Japan in English and Japanese.

CBS S2BP

second release has the same text)
Stuart's third copy from the mid-1970s has records with orange/yellow labels while the rear sleeve and inside gatefold are in monochrome. Michel Pomarede has a transitional copy - the sleeve has the monochrome rear and inside, but the records still have plain orange labels.
Early Australian release labels like both shown had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.) There must also be a late 1970s release with longer copyright text round the bottom of the labels.

"Self Portrait" - 2LP vinyl sets, First Records FL-1941/1942 (Taiwan); World Record SLW-1778/79 (Taiwan), 1970s:
These releases are from Taiwan ("Republic of China"), where they were legal to purchase, although not legal to export (Columbia had no pressing plant in Taiwan). The set has a sleeve for both records made of flimsy paper encased in thin plastic, not a gatefold sleeve. The catalogue number on the sleeve is FL-1942, but the records themselves have red labels and catalogue numbers: Side 1 - FL-1941-A, Side 2 - FL-1941-B, Side 3 - FL-1941-C, Side 4 - FL-1941-D. For more information, see Questionable Releases.
The First Records set also appears as World Record SLW-1778/79 with the false claim that Jimi Hendrix plays guitar on the album! It has a completely different sleeve design, not actually a sleeve but two sheets of flimsy paper inside a plastic sleeve. The records have black labels.

CBS AGP 11/12 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1976 release) |
The 1976 South African release had a new catalogue number of CBS AGP 11/12 (the 1975 re-release of Blonde On Blonde was CBS AGP 9/10). The records again have orange CBS labels with several differences from the 1970 labels. "76" is included in the record matrix numbers and on a price sticker in the inner sleeve:"76 SEP R 8.75" (Sep 1976 Rand 8.75). The outer sleeve is laminated, and has the CBS logo/catalogue number and the printer's name Interpak on the rear. The records come in an inner sleeve with contemporary albums released in 1975-76 (e.g. Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, 1976). Listed on the rear of the inner sleeve is a 2LP compilation Those Were The Days (CBS AGP 3/4) with Mr. Tambourine Man covered by The Byrds and The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob himself - this is now listed in International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations) 1970s. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AGP 11-12-XSM153504 76, Side 2 - AGP 11-12-XSM153505 76, Side 3 - AGP 11-12-XSM153506 76, Side 4 - AGP 11-12-XSM153507 76. |

CBS AGP.11/12 (South Africa), late 1970s/early 1980s:
This set was re-released with the same catalogue number in the late 1970s/early 1980s, and this time the records had orange/yellow CBS labels. These were not introduced into South Africa until Street-Legal in 1978, Hard Rain in 1976 still had plain orange record labels, now with the name of the Gramophone Record Company (Pty.) Ltd. The sleeve is identical to the 1976 release apart from the fact that the outside is no longer laminated. The records of the copy shown have the same matrix numbers as the 1976 release above: Side 1 - AGP 11-12 XSM-153504 76, Side 2 - AGP 11-12 XSM-153505 76, Side 3 - AGP 11-12 XSM-153506 76, Side 4 - AGP 11-12 XSM-153507 76.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding the 1976 release on eBay, correctly listed as a "second pressing". Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans of all three releases.

"Autorretrato [Self Portrait]" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS CLS-5309 (Mexico), 1970:
CBS CLS-5309 (Mexico) - front scan by Hans Seegers (stereo release) |
This album is an oddity, because it consists of Record 2 of Self Portrait only. The song titles are given in Spanish and English on the rear sleeve and the record labels, but the English album title does not appear. The front also lists two Spanish-translated song titles which had been released as stereo EPs in Mexico: Cabaña De Indios [Wigwam] and Luna Azul [Blue Moon]. For these see US & International 7" Singles & EPs 1970. |

The front sleeve has a unique design with a border, which is cut off at the bottom on the stereo sleeve because of the white top stereo panel, but which surrounds all four side on the mono sleeve. The rear sleeve is the same for both releases, and has both mono and stereo catalogue numbers. Hans Seegers has been looking since 1970 to see if there was a separate Mexican release of Record 1, but has not been able to find it. Manuel García Jara explains this:
"Dylan albums released in Latin American countries in the 1960s were scarce and they were released in this period only after a hit single in the US charts. Wigwam was a relative hit and, for this reason, the release of Self Portrait was projected by CBS in some Latin American countries. But there was a problem with economic viability: a double album like Self Portrait was too expensive at the time (Blonde On Blonde was never released there), so there were three different solutions:
All releases of Self Portrait as a single album, stereo or mono, have the same matrix numbers."
The song titles are in Spanish and English on the sleeve and record labels - Copper Kettle is wrongly translated as "Caldera De Acero [Steel Kettle]". The correct translation is "Caldera De Cobre" as on the 1970 Spanish stereo single, see again US & International 7" Singles & EPs 1970.
For the mono version of this release, see Mono Album Releases.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara, Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Autorretrato [Self Portrait]" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS/Columbia CLS 5309 (Mexico/Dominican Republic), 1970:
Although the sleeve has the CBS logo, the record surprisingly has red Columbia labels, not the expected orange CBS labels. These textured labels have been printed according to the US design of the 1960s and even have the word "Irrompible (Nonbreakable)". The album title is in Spanish only and the song titles on the rear sleeve and record labels are in Spanish and English. Copper Kettle is again wrongly translated as "Caldera De Acero [Steel Kettle]".
The rear sleeve of this copy has the Spanish word "Descatalogado", which could mean "out of print" (released some time ago but not now available at the present) or "cancelled" (an abandoned project) stamped on it. This copy has been drilled to make it unsaleable: there is a tiny hole through the sleeve and even through the vinyl that makes this record unplayable, at least the first track of both sides. This would imply that the album had been cancelled and all copies withdrawn.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
