Nashville Skyline
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. Because of the length of this page, Nashville Skyline CD releases are now here. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 18 March, 2024.
Original US stereo LP, Columbia KCS 9825, 9 Apr 1969. The front photograph is by Elliot Landy, taken not in Nashville, TN, but at Woodstock, NY. The front sleeve used in the USA and several other countries worldwide does not have the artist name or album title, just a Columbia or CBS logo at top left. This album did not have a separate mono mix, but a mono version reduced from stereo was released outside the USA - for this see Mono Album Releases. Tracklisting:
For details of quadraphonic releases of Nashville Skyline with rarities, see below and 1974 |
Complete 35mm frame signed by Elliot Landy |
This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are available in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one, despite the fact it was released in a quadraphonic mix in 1974 (see 1974). However, Lay, Lady, Lay was released by Mobile Fidelity in the USA in a 4.0 (quadraphonic) mix on a compilation SA-CD called The Collection: An Adventure In Sound in 2016. This 4.0 surround sound version of Lay, Lady, Lay is the original 1974 mix by Neil Wilburn, remastered by Steve Hoffman, and is reported to precede a 4.0 quadraphonic release of the album.
Three out-takes from this album have been officially released:
One Too Many Mornings - Bob and Johnny Cash duetting at the Nashville Skyline sessions in the 1969 film and video Johnny Cash: The Man = His World = His Music (R-0069, see VHS & DVD 1960s).
I Threw It All Away - an alternate take to the version on Nashville Skyline from the 1970 New Morning sessions appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003 (R-0606, see Online Performances (Other) ). An alternate take of the song also appears on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait 1969-1971, Aug 2013, but not the same one as it was from the Nashville Skyline sessions in 1969.
Country Pie - an alternate take to the version on Nashville Skyline appears on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait 1969-1971, Aug 2013.
Thanks to Gil Walker for
news about a tape being auctioned on eBay that was recorded during the Nashville
Skyline sessions at Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville, TN, 14 Feb
1969, with five out-takes of Lay, Lady, Lay and a previously uncirculating
song Going To Chicago. This has been added to the Starlight in The East "G"
page. It has different lyrics from Doc Watson's Going To Chicago Blues,
so was thought to be a Dylan original. It has now been released in Nov 2019
on
The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 - Travelin' Thru 1967-1969 with the
previously unknown title Western Road. Thanks to Tim Dunn for information that this tape with five takes of Lay, Lady, Lay is part of what in 1993 were known as "The Lost Warehouse Tapes". These were between 2200 and 3000 reels of tape recorded between 1953 and 1971, discarded by Columbia and acquired by record producer Clark Enslin. Other recordings by Bob are known to be Mr. Bojangles (released on the 1973 Dylan album), Wild Thing, Blue Moon, Ring Of Fire and Take A Message To Mary. |

Thanks to Jeff Gold, Bruce Mulle and several others for news of 149 Dylan acetates from the Nashville Skyline/Self Portrait/New Morning era that were found in a New York building in West Houston Street, Greenwich Village, that was once rented by Bob as a studio. These have been named "The West Houston Street Acetates" and contain many unreleased versions of Dylan songs from the period. They will be listed in full on the 2014 page when time permits. For full details, see here. |

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information about 50th Anniversary Collection 1969, a very limited 2CD set in a fold-out card sleeve. Apparently there are only 200 copies for sale in Europe - the UK, France and Germany. The set consists of out-takes from Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait, all of which are rarities and have been allocated R-numbers, see 2019. |

copies below)
Gerd Rundel's copy has record matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1H (stamped), Side 2 - XSM 139757-1A (handwritten). Rene Jørgensen has a similar copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1AB, Side 2 - XSM139757-1L. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 – XSM 139756 – 1C (handwritten), Side 2 – XSM 139757 – 1G (stamped). Stephen MacKinnon has a white label test pressing of the album with blank labels in a plain white sleeve. It has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1G, Side 2 - XSM139757-1F. The track timings are slightly different from the released album, but by no more than a second or two.
Lance Jacobs has a commercial copy still in the shrink-wrap with the "Lay Lady Lay" front sticker. "4J420" is stamped in green on the rear sleeve at upper right (there are remnants of a rectangular sticker under the number). The record has 1969 "2 eye" labels as shown and is also in the original 1969 "Sound of the Revolutionaries" inner sleeve. It has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-139756-1G, Side 2 - XSM-113757-1L.
Lars M. Banke has a copy with the black text missing on the Side 1 label. The Side 2 label is normal. The record of this copy also has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756 1G, Side 2 - XSM 139757 1F. Lars has a second copy with misprinted labels. The black album information is upside down in relation to the pre-printed white Columbia text. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756 1 B (handwritten), Side 2 - XSM 139757 1E (stamped).
Gerd Rundel also has a copy with an identical sleeve but with later 1970s style record labels with the Columbia logos in a ring round the circumference (see label scans above right). This copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756-1B (handwritten), Side 2 - XSM139757-1K (stamped). Christopher Burton says: "I have a US pressing of Nashville Skyline with KCS 9825 on the cover and labels and with the first "Featuring Lay Lady Lay" sticker on the shrink-wrap. The stamped matrices are: Side 1 - XSM139756-1AB, Side 2 - XSM139757-1L (same as Rene Jørgensen's copy) but the labels are the later red ones with yellow "six-eye" Columbia writing around the edges, not the original "two-eye" 360° stereo sound labels. The front and rear cover photos also have noticeably less of a blue tinge than most of the other "Skyline" cover images on your site."

the same)
Columbia JC 9825 (USA)
- detail of spine, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (late 1970s release)
Gerd Rundel has a copy of the 1983 release with a barcode on the rear sleeve. The spine has "PC 9825" while the record labels have "JC 9825". The front sleeve has a “THE NICE PRICE” sticker. The record labels differ from those of Jeremy Mayle's "JC 9825" release in three ways:
There is more space between “BOB DYLAN” and the album title “NASHVILLE SKYLINE”
"Side 1" and "Side 2" are written in bold italics
The text "with Johnny Cash" and the writer credit for "-B. Dylan" are printed further to the right.
The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-3AA (handwritten), Side 2 - XSM139757-2E (stamped).
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Ulf Gyllenspetz, Gerd Rundel, Jeremy Mayle, Lars M. Banke, Paul Melote and Lance Jacobs for information and pictures. Thanks to Stuart Moore for the scan of the Big Three Music Corporation US sheet music for the album.

"Nashville Skyline" - 180gm stereo vinyl 2LP releases and test pressings, Mobile Fidelity MFSL 2-424 (USA), 12 Feb 2014:
Mobile Fidelity MFSL 2-424 (USA)- test pressings:
The first variant test pressing was made by RTI (Record Technology Inc.) for Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Sides 1 and 3 have generic RTI labels and are dated 29 Aug 2013. Sides 2 and 4 have plain white labels, as do both other listed variants. Each record comes in a plain black cut out sleeve. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 2-424 A2 plus 22359.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 2-424 B2 plus 22359.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 3 - MFSL 2-424 C2 plus 22359.3 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 4 - MFSL 2-424 D2 plus 22359.4 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite. In the matrix numbers, “KW” means that the records were mastered by Krieg Wunderlich of Mobile Fidelity.
Each record of the second test pressing also comes in a plain black cut out sleeve. Sides 1 and 3 have generic RTI labels and are dated 12 Feb 2014 while Sides 2 and 4 have plain white labels. The matrix numbers on the RTI labels are wrongly mistitled “MFLS 2-424-2”, “MFSL 2-424-2” would be correct. The handwritten matrix numbers are exactly the same as those listed for the records of the first variant.
Each record of the third test pressing comes in a plain white sleeve with a sticker at front top left. Sides 1 and 3 again have generic RTI labels while Sides 2 and 4 again have plain white labels. This test pressing is undated but must be later than 12 Feb 2014 because the matrix numbers on the labels are now correct. "Nashville Skyline" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia KCS 9825 (USA for export to Denmark and Sweden), 1969:
Columbia KCS 9825
(USA for Denmark) - detail of rear with three instances of "Columbia"
partially erased, scan by Rene Jørgensen
(alternate copy)
Lars M. Banke has a third copy of the US release KCS 9825 bought in Sweden that this time has had the "Columbia" logos on the front and rear sleeves obscured with grey/white "CBS" stickers. The Columbia information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is again not obscured. On the record labels there are the same shaped grey "CBS" stickers over "Columbia" on both sides this time.
Columbia KCS 9825 (USA for export to Denmark) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (both copies - "Columbia" not obscured)Lars M. Banke also has two export copy variants (to Denmark) with a silver foil "CBS" sticker on the front sleeve. His first copy had no grey CBS sticker on the rear sleeve covering the Columbia logo. These new variants have similar stickers to the one on Rene’s copy. On all of Lars' copies the word "Columbia" is not erased the three times that it is mentioned at the bottom of the rear sleeve. However, this time there are CBS stickers on the inner sleeve covering "Columbia"! The matrix numbers of the first Danish copy are the same as those for Lars' first copy: Side 1 - XSM139756-1F, Side 2 - XSM139757-1G. This one was definitely exported to Denmark as the small FONA sticker in the bottom of the right corner of the rear sleeve indicates that it was sold in a FONA shop. FONA is the name of a Danish music retail chain that ceased trading in 2016. On the record labels there are shaped red shaped "CBS" sticker over "Columbia" on both sides.
The second Danish export copy was originally bought in the largest department store in Copenhagen named "Magasin" as it has a tiny green "Magasin" sticker in the upper right corner of the rear sleeve. It again has a silver foil CBS sticker on the front sleeve covering the Columbia logo, and a grey CBS sticker covering the logo in the upper right corner of the rear sleeve. The same grey CBS sticker is also on the (original!) inner Columbia US sleeve which offers the possibility of ordering a set of 3ft x 2ft posters including the Milton Glaser print originally given away with Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits in 1967! All the albums listed on the reverse of the inner sleeve date from around mid-1968. There are again shaped red CBS stickers with white lettering on the labels. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1C, Side 2 - XSM139757-1C.
This copy bought in Sweden has grey "CBS" stickers on the front and rear sleeve and the same shaped red stickers with three "CBS" logos on the record labels as above. As with the two copies above, "Columbia" is not erased on the rear bottom line. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756 1F, Side 2 - XSM 139 757 1F.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke and Rene Jørgensen for information and scans.

Columbia KCS 9825 (USA for export to
Australia) - detail of rear with "Columbia" obscured, scan by Lars M. Banke
This copy is unusual because it was found in Australia rather than Northern Europe! Every occurrence of "Columbia" on the front and rear sleeve has been blacked out with marker pen, and the record labels have black ring-shaped stickers hiding the ring of Columbia logos. This is an early pressing - the record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1E, Side 2 - XSM139757-1K.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo vinyl LP release, Columbia PC 9825 (USA for export to Sweden), mid-1970s:
Lars M. Banke has a copy of the US mid-1970s release Columbia PC 9825 again bought in Sweden that this time has had the "Columbia" logos on the front and rear sleeves obscured with gold stickers. The Columbia information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is again not obscured. The record labels have gold ring-shaped stickers covering the ring of Columbia logos. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1E (stamped), Side 2 - XSM139757-2D (handwritten).

It has a light grey cassette with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels.

(Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Augie Krater (1969 release -
US sleeve with New York address and "Printed in U.S.A." obscured, see above for comparison)
Augie Krater has a different 1969 copy (variant 2) in what appears to be a US sleeve with the New York address and "Printed in U.S.A." obscured at the bottom of the rear. The record still has labels with the "STEREO"/"360° SOUND"/arrows logo in black, but the artist name and album title are in larger text. Also, the song titles are left aligned instead of centred and "NONBREAKABLE" is missing. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756, Side 2 - XSM 139757-2. Additionally, there is a handwritten "GT" on both sides, some distance after the matrices.

Columbia KCS 9825
(US/Canada) - detail of inner sleeve rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (1970
release variant 2 - "Printed in U.S.A.")
Lars M. Banke's copy is similar to Manuel's 1969 variant 1 copy with centred song titles. The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756, Side 2 - KCS 9825 -139757.
Gerd Rundel has a 1970 copy in a Columbia US inner sleeve, dated 1970 at front bottom left. The details in black text on the record labels are similar to Augie Krater's 1969 variant 2 copy, with the artist name and album title in larger text and the song titles left aligned. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756, Side 2 - XSM 139757.

Similar to the US export copies above, Lars M. Banke has a copy of the 1970s Canadian release KCS 9825 bought in Scandinavia that this time has had the "Columbia" logos on the front and rear sleeves obscured with black circular stickers. The Columbia Canada information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is again not obscured. On the record labels there are black ring-shaped stickers over the ring of "Columbia" logos.
Columbia KCS 9825
(Canada for export) - detail of rear with two instances of "Columbia"
obscured, scan by Lars M. Banke (third copy)
The third export copy was bought in Sweden and has no stickers on the sleeve. The instances of "Columbia" have been obscured with black marker pen on the front and rear sleeve, and the ring of "Columbia" logos on the record labels has been roughly blacked out with thick marker pen. The record has very hard to read handwritten matrix numbers are: Side 1 - XSM-137756 III 2-HD, Side 2 - XSM-137757 2HD.
Columbia KCS 9825
(Canada for export) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (fourth copy -
"Columbia" obscured on right)
This fourth Canadian export copy of Nashville Skyline bought in Sweden is different from the ones already on the website as this one has white ring-shaped stickers on the labels. "Columbia" is obscured with black marker pen, once on the front sleeve and twice on the rear sleeve. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM – 139756 1H – 2H [unreadable], Side 2- XSM – 139757 1H - 2HD.
Columbia KCS 9825

For the UK mono album, see Mono

CBS S 63601 (UK) - 1969 test pressing:
CBS S 63601 (UK) - 1969 release (Upton Printing Group version):
CBS S 63601 (UK) - detail of rear (Upton Printing Group version with printer
name on right)
My record in the Upton sleeve comes in a generic paper sleeve as shown and has orange CBS labels.
My copy's paper inner sleeve is generic, and contains details of current CBS albums including The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Leonard Cohen. The reverse of the inner sleeve is interesting in that it contains an eight point propaganda piece about buying music on vinyl records. At the time the only serious alternative to vinyl was the 8-track stereo tape cartridge format, which was much more prevalent in the USA than in the UK. The "Compact Cassette" medium had not yet become established. The rear sleeve has the then CBS postal address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1. Henry V. Bell points out the sleeve actually shows Nashville Skyline, and also has albums with later catalogue numbers, so may not have been printed at the release date of the album. His copy has a plain white sleeve. However, as far as I can remember, I bought the album on the day it came out or very soon afterwards!
The record of my copy has orange CBS labels with catalogue number "S 63601". It has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 63601 A1, Side 2 - SBPG 63601 B2. Track 1 “GIRL OF THE NORTH COUNTRY (with JOHNNY CASH)" is listed on two lines on the Side 1 label. The tracks on Side 1 are credited to Blossom Music and B. Feldman, and on the Side 2 label they're all credited to B. Feldman. The catalogue numbers under the song credits are "63601 A" and "63601 B".
Gerd Rundel points out that all the listed UK releases have "Girl Of The North Country" on the Side 1 label. All other countries have "Girl From The North Country" on the Side 1 label! The song title is listed as "Girl From The North Country" on the rear sleeve, which is the same as on the front and rear sleeve plus the Side 1 record label of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. bobdylan.com and the various lyrics books. Some commentators have expressed their preference for "Girl Of The North Country" because she still lives there, because if she were the "Girl From The North Country" she would now live somewhere else!
Gerd Rundel's copy with first release variant 2 record labels comes in the same sleeve as my copy (the Upton Printing Group version with the gold foil "Stereo" sticker next to the top rear CBS logo).
The records label variants 3 and 4 have the differences as shown in the detail scans and come in Upton Printing Group sleeves without a gold foil "Stereo" sticker on the rear.
Crispin Ollington has a copy with the Upton sleeve, a plain white inner sleeve, and matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 63601 A1 (the "S" is handwritten), Side 2 - SBPG 63601 B1 (the "S" is handwritten). It does not have a gold foil "STEREO" sticker on the rear sleeve, nor is there a mark on the sleeve when one could have been. This may therefore be the earliest UK pressing.
CBS S 63601 (UK) - 1969 release (two Quality Stationery Limited versions):
CBS S 63601 (UK) - detail of rear scan by
Henry V. Bell (first Quality Stationery Limited version with printer name on
right)
CBS S 63601 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (second
Quality Stationery Limited version without printer name)
Henry V. Bell has a copy with a different sleeve made by Quality Stationery Limited (first QSL version) with the printer name at rear bottom right. His record has the same record labels as mine with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 63601 A2, Side 2 - SBPG 63601 B1.
Sergio Mariano Romay's copy has a mono/stereo sleeve (second QSL version) that has no sign of having had a stereo sticker on the rear. The printer name is missing at bottom right of the rear sleeve (compare with my Upton sleeve above).
The inner sleeve of Sergio's copy is a transparent plastic bag inside a paper bag that has holes on each side that allows the record labels to be seen. One side is shaped at the top opening edge. The front side has blue printed text warning of the danger of plastic bags. The Side 1 label has the listing of songs in five lines in place of six, because “GIRL OF THE NORTH COUNTRY (with JOHNNY CASH)" is printed on one line instead of two. The music credits to the right of the central hole on both sides has partly changed (see detail scans). The catalogue numbers under the song credits are now "S 63601 A" and "S 63601 B".
The record of Sergio's QSL copy is possibly later than the Upton copies above and has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 63601 A3, Side 2 - SBPG 63601 B2.
CBS S 63601 (UK) - early 1970s release:
CBS S 63601 (UK) - three mid-1970s releases:
CBS S 63601 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (first mid 1970s release -
no printer name)
CBS S 63601 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (second mid 1970s release -
no printer name, "LC|149" in capsule at bottom right)
On what appears to be a second mid-1970s copy the front sleeve looks the same as that of the first 1970s release with “63601” below the CBS logo. The rear sleeve is definitely later and has different text below the CBS logo at top right and has “LC 0149” in a capsule at bottom right. The record labels are completely different in layout, and songs are now credited to just Kinney Music and Big Ben Music, there is no mention of B. Feldman. The record of the second mid-1970s copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 63601 A3, Side 2 - SBPG 63601 B2. Surprisingly the definitely earlier record (because of the writer credits and matrix numbers) came in the definitely later sleeve (because of the extra codes at top and bottom right on the rear) and vice-versa, so there must have been considerable crossover of releases at this time. Paul Shenton has a copy of this release where all the black text on Side 1 is missing! The Side 2 label is the same as that of Gerd Rundel's second mid-1970s copy.
CBS S 63601 (UK) - late 1970s:
Record label playing speeds anomaly:
CBS S 63601 (Ireland) - late 1970s:
The Irish record of Nashville Skyline has catalogue number CBS S 63601 with both "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom of the labels and "Record mfd. in Ireland" above. This release just has "Girl Of The North" on the Side 1 label, omitting "Country"! The playing speed is shown as just "33", and there is no "LC|0149" capsule. Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for spotting this on eBay and to Arie de Reus for scans.
CBS S 63601 (UK) - 1984 release (two variants):
CBS S 63601 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (1984 releases)
There were two record label variants: the first (Gerd Rundel's copy) has CBS copyright info at the bottom of the labels and "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text; the second (Peter Oudejans' copy) has both "MADE IN ENGLAND" and CBS copyright info in the circumference text and nothing at the bottom of the labels. The record of the first copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-63601-A4, Side 2 - CBS-63601-B4. I don't have a Side 2 label for the second variant.
CBS 32675 (UK) - 1985 release (two variants):
CBS 32675 (UK) - detail of rear (1985 release - both variants)
The record of my variant 2 copy has the same labels as Manuel's and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32675 A6, Side 1 - 32675 A6. It comes in the same black CBS "Nice Price" inner sleeve promoting other contemporary CBS albums as Gerd Rundel's late 1980s copy of Slow Train Coming.
Thanks to Henry V. Bell, Gerd Rundel, Manuel García Jara, Sergio Mariano Romay, Arie de Reus, Nigel Harrison, Paul Shenton and Peter Oudejans for information and pictures.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40-63601 (UK),
early 1970s, re-released mid 1970s; CBS 40-32675 (UK), 1980s:
All these cassette releases have only a crop of the front sleeve design
as the artwork.
David Burgess has a Jun 1970 CBS UK leaflet advertising the release of
Self Portrait
that lists an 8-track stereo tape cartridge CBS 42-63601.
Ronald Born has a CBS UK catalogue from 1974-75 that also lists it. Scans
required!
Paul Shenton has a copy with the same cassette as shown with orange CBS labels, but with a different insert, still with the Cash poem. It now has a triangular voucher to be cut out on the inside at the top right corner. There's no indication on the insert as to what the vouchers are to be collected for.
The mid 1970s cassette release has a shorter insert, omitting the Cash poem. Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL), the UK music licensing company and performance rights organisation, moved from Oxford Street in London to Ganton Street in 1977. This release still has the Oxford Street address on the inside of the cassette insert, so dates from before 1977. The mid-1970s cassette is light grey with printed text in black, there are no paper labels.
The 1980s cassette release has a new catalogue number, CBS 40-32675. The insert is the same size as that of the previous release, but now has the new CBS logo and a barcode. This release has the PPL Ganton Street address on the inside of the cassette insert. The 1980s cassette has the new catalogue number and the new CBS logo. It is again light grey with printed text in black, there are no paper labels.
Thanks to Tom Willems, Manuel García Jara and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

These 1972 releases have a sleeve made by CBS Holland and has "NL PRINTED IN HOLLAND" on the rear sleeve, which is otherwise the same as the 1969 Dutch sleeve with text in English front and back. The orange CBS record labels are dated 1972 and have "MADE IN SPAIN" at the bottom, although they don't have displayed the logo of Spanish copyright organisation "SGAE" which means the records were made in Spain for sale in Holland or other European countries. The song titles are in English, although Girl Of The North Country is shown as "CON JOHNNY CASH [WITH JOHNNY CASH]" (on the Side 1 labels of the Dutch releases she's shown as "Girl From The North Country" and "with Johnny Cash" is in English). Like the Spanish records labels below, the album title is missing. There are two record label variants: the first has Sides "1" or "2" and the logo of the Dutch copyright organisation "STEMRA" to the right of the centre hole, the playing speed "33⅓ RPM" to the right of the centre hole, and "B. Dylan" credited after every song in the song title text; the second has Sides "A" or "B" and the logo of the other Dutch copyright organisation "C.C. BIEM" to the right of the centre hole, playing speed "33⅓ RPM" to the left of the centre hole, and "B. Dylan" credited once only below the song titles. Both copies have identical stamped matrix numbers, printed exactly with identical characters: Side 1 - S 63601 A3, Side 2 - SBPG 63301 B2.

Also shown is a CBS Germany promo poster for the album, given to stores/dealers etc. for advertisement/promotion purposes for the upcoming Nashville Skyline release. The rear of the poster has a discography of West German Dylan releases with illustrations of seven albums. Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Friedhelm Hendricks for pointing out that the 2016 "Bob Dylan Worldwide" book from Christoph Maus and myself has a mistake in that it wrongly states that this promo poster is the one given away with the album, rather than the correct Milton Glaser poster as shown above.

The sleeve and record were made in West Germany. The sleeve is laminated on the front only. The record has orange CBS labels with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 27 679611 S1 S 63601 S1, Side 2 - 27 679611 S2 S 63601 S2. There are two label variants. They appear identical except for the text to the left of the centre hole above the "GEMA" logo - on variant 1 this is "CLUB-SONDERAUFLAGE [Club Special Edition]" all in capitals, on variant 2 it is "Club-Sonderauflage" in upper and lower case.
For the regular West German release, see above.

The early 1970s release comes in the same sleeve with two folded-over flaps on the rear. The record labels are still orange with the "BIEM" logo. "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR S.p.A." is now in the circumference text. Side 2 still has the "Lady Lady Lay" misprint. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S CL 63601 1L/2 25/1/72, Side 2 - S CL 63601 2L/3 25/1/72 ("25/1/72" - 25 Jan 1972 - is the mastering date).
The mid-1970s release again comes in the same sleeve with two folded-over flaps on the rear. The record labels are now orange/yellow with the "BIEM" logo. "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR" is now back at the bottom of the labels. Side 2 still has the "Lady Lady Lay" misprint. The record of this copy again has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S CL 63601 1L/2 25/1/72, Side 2 - S CL 63601 2L/3 25/1/72, still with the mastering date of 25 Jan 1972.
The late 1970s release comes in a sleeve without folded-over flaps and the record has orange/yellow CBS labels with just "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" at the bottom of the labels but aligned as if "SUGAR" were still present.

Commercial release in bag, scan by Gerd Rundel |
The test pressing came in a generic sleeve and has plain white labels. It was pressed by MPO (Moulages et Plastiques de l'Ouest), a French CD and vinyl family owned pressing company, and is a test pressing for the album released in Italy as part of the De Agostini Bob Dylan Vinyl Collection on 15 Mar 2019, see .The commercial release is Part 9 of the collection and came in a regular sleeve inside a clear plastic bag with a magazine. The text at the bottom of the rear sleeve and on the record labels is "This record is part of a De Agostini publication. Not to be sold separately". I cannot see a catalogue number on the sleeve or the record labels. |

This re-release from the early 1980s has the new catalogue number CBS 32675, introduced around 1982 for the "Nice Price" range. The sleeve is now printed in Holland and is the same as the 1980s Dutch sleeve above with "CB|231" in a capsule on the rear sleeve at top right with "53" in a circle. Both copies shown have a red/white CBS "NICE PRICE" sticker on the front sleeve. There is also "LC|0149" in a capsule on the sleeve at rear bottom right. This copy has a Greek price sticker for 530 Drachmas on the rear sleeve at top right. The record was made in Greece and now has orange/yellow CBS labels. There appears to be no matrix number on Side 1 of the record of this copy, but it does have “S 63601 B III” (handwritten) on Side 2.
The late 1980s record comes in the same Dutch sleeve and now has red CBS labels. The record was made in Greece and this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 63601 A, Side 2 - S63601 B III. Lars M. Banke has a second copy of this late 1980s release without a "NICE PRICE" sticker on the front. The record of this copy has no matrix number on Side 1 and S63601 B III on Side 2 as the first copy.

The second Japanese release, CBS/Sony SOPL-227 from 1974, has a yellow top obi with black text. Dan Norbury has a promo copy that comes in the regular sleeve with part of the rear obi cut away. This is because a token has been removed. Copies of the limited edition rarities release Mr. D's Collection were given away in 1974 to Japanese fans in exchange for tokens collected from the obis of CBS/Sony albums as shown, see 1974. The record comes in a picture inner sleeve with an eight-page booklet with lyrics in English and Japanese. The record of Dan Norbury's promo copy has black/white labels whereas the commercial record has orange/cream labels. This promo copy also has the picture inner sleeve and booklet. "Nashville Skyline" - stereo cassette release, CBS/Sony SONK-53122 (Japan), ca. 1970:
CBS/Sony Japan stereo cassette releases were comparatively rare and for a long time this was the only Japanese commercial cassette release I knew about. The "SONK" catalogue number implies it was released around the same time as the first vinyl release, which was SONP-50095. The cassette is white with orange CBS/Sony labels.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS SBP 233669 (Australia), 1969, reissued 1970s/1980s:
Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)
Manuel García Jara has a copy from the early 1980s with orange/yellow labels, but with the longer copyright text and songs credited to "Warner Bros" and "Chappell". The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX159395, Side 2 - MX159396. (The first Australian Dylan album to be released with songs credited to "Chappell" was Shot Of Love in 1981.) Lars M. Banke has a 1980s copy with different record labels: they have the longer copyright text, but "BOB DYLAN" and the album title are on two lines and the songs are credited to Warner Bros. only, not Chappell. Simon Blokker has a copy of this release and the record has unusual matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX159395B SBP233669-1 (stamped) IV (handwritten) Side 2 - MX 159396 (handwritten) (MX160790) B SBP233669-2 (stamped, but both "(" and ")" on either side of "MX160790" handwritten).
Thanks to Peter Lindberg, Stuart Moore, Lars M. Banke, Manuel García Jara
and Simon Blokker for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo cassette, CBS PC 669 (Australia), early 1970s (two releases):
What I have called the alternate first release also has an off-white cassette with pale buff paper labels like the first release. It has a short insert that is very different from those of the first and second releases. The text "BOB DYLAN" and "NASHVILLE SKYLINE" are printed below the front picture and there are no song titles listed. The songs are again credited to "Albert". The first line of text on the cassette labels is "BOB DYLAN - NASHVILLE SKYLINE", not "BOB DYLAN SINGS". The text below the centre window is now "BOB DYLAN - NASHVILLE SKYLINE".
The second cassette release has a shorter version of the first release insert with "BOB DYLAN" and "Nashville Skyline" printed on the front picture, and the text below the picture listing five song titles. The songs are again credited to "Albert". The cassette is buff with off-white paper labels of a different design including much larger album and song titles. "BOB DYLAN SINGS" is again the top line of text on the cassette labels. The text below the centre window is again just "NASHVILLE SKYLINE".
Thanks to Stuart Moore and Dylan Thomson for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS SBP 473654 (New Zealand), 1969; CBS SBP 474240 (New Zealand), 1974, re-released late 1970s:
The first release of this album has the catalogue number SBP 473654 and a "STEREO"/arrows logo in the front blue box. The rear sleeve is in monochrome with a wide white border. There is no country of origin on the sleeve. The record has orange CBS labels with the Allan's logo on Side 1 only.
The first release of SBP 474240 with orange CBS labels dates from around 1974 and was made for CBS Records by Phonogram Limited of New Zealand (part of Philips, later PolyGram, now Universal). The release of SBP 474240 with orange/yellow CBS record labels dates from the late 1970s at the earliest since New Zealand still used the plain orange 1960s-style CBS labels for Desire in 1976. Both the late 1970s sleeve and record were made by CBS Records Auckland.
Thanks to Stuart Moore and Bill Hester for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia/CBS KCS 9825 (Philippines), 1969 (two releases); CBS/Sony/Blackgold LP-1596 (Philippines), 1981:

Columbia/CBS KCS

(Philippines) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (both releases)
Columbia/CBS KCS
9825 (Philippines) - spine scan by Manuel García Jara
(both releases)
Although the sleeve has Columbia logos front and rear, the records have CBS orange labels. The sleeve has "PRINTED IN U.S.A." on the spine, but it almost certainly wasn't. The first release record labels have two spelling mistakes on Side 1 - "wjth JOHNNY CASH" and " I THEREW IT ALL AWAY". The second release record labels now have the same typeface as the US releases and the Side 1 spelling mistakes have been corrected. Another small difference is that "B. Dylan" on the bottom text line has longer dashes on either side. The second release record shown has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1G, Side 2 - XSM139757-1G.
CBS/Sony/Blackgold Records LP-1596 (Philippines), 1981:
CBS/Sony/Blackgold Records LP-1596 (Philippines) -
detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (dated 1981)
This 1981 Philippines re-release of Nashville Skyline (LP-1596) was manufactured by Blackgold Records on behalf of CBS/Sony Japan. The sleeve is based on the 1981 Columbia "Mastersound" Half Speed Mastered release, but the "Mastersound" elements have been erased very clumsily. Even the box on the rear sleeve with the text "THIS RECORD IS PLAYABLE ON ALL EQUIPMENT" has been erased. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - LP-1596 A, Side 2 - LP-1596 B.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS ASF 1392 (South Africa), 1969, re-released 1970s (twice):
CBS ASF 1392 (South Africa) -
detail of rear, scan by Stuart Moore (first release, photo credits and boxed
text present, "Interpak" logo printed directly on to background photo)
The sleeves of the first and second South African releases have laminated fronts and the rear sleeves have two folded-over flaps. The third release sleeve below still has a laminated front but does not have folded-over flaps. The rear sleeve background photo is monochrome, not coloured as in most worldwide releases, and has a white border. The inner sleeve of the first South African copy has an owner's address label from Claremont, a suburb of Cape Town. The rear sleeve of the first South African release has the "Interpak" printer's logo at bottom right printed directly on to the background photo, but on the second and third South African releases rear sleeve the "Interpak" logo is in a white panel.
The records of these releases have orange CBS labels with the same CBS ASF.1392 catalogue number.
CBS ASF 1392 (South Africa) -
detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (second release, photo credits and boxed
text present, "Interpak" logo in white panel)
The second release appears to be transitional between the first and third releases. The text "CAN ALSO BE PLAYED ON MONO EQUIPMENT" between "Stereo" and the CBS logo is missing both on the front and the rear sleeve as on the third release sleeve, but the photo credits and the boxed "CBS STEREO RECORDS..." text at the bottom of the rear sleeve are still present. The "Interpak" logo is in a white panel at bottom right of the rear sleeve as the third release sleeve. The copy shown has handwritten details of an owner in Luanda in the former Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Southern Africa and is dated 1973 on both the rear sleeve and the Side 1 label. It's possibly this copy was exported from South Africa to Angola by a record store, but more likely is that the owner purchased it privately in South Africa.
The record again has orange CBS labels virtually identical to those of the first release, except the album title and artist name above the CBS logo are lower down than on the first and third releases. The record of the copy shown of the second South African release has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1G, Side 2 - XSM139757-1G.

CBS 121.012 (Chile) - front scan by Hans Seegers |
This very rare release from Chile was
manufactured and distributed for CBS by Philips (later PolyGram and now part
of Universal). The album title is translated into Spanish as Horizonte
De Nashville. The sleeve is of very
fragile card and open on three sides. The rear sleeve design has text in Spanish
and omits the Nashville skyline picture. Lars M. Banke has noticed that
on the rear sleeve and the
Side 1 label Nashville Skyline Rag is misspelled
“Nashville Skiline Rag”. The record has orange CBS labels with song titles in Spanish and English. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM139756-1H, Side 2 - XSM139757-1L. "Nashville Skyline" - promo and commercial stereo/mono vinyl LP releases, CBS 27.024 (Uruguay), 1969, re-released 1973:
Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for finding two promo copies on eBay. The first promo copy is of the first release and has promo stamps that say "Para uso publicitario, muestras sin valor [For publicity use, material without value]" on the rear sleeve and on the Side 1 "BOD DYLAN" label (the Side 2 picture is missing). I have no picture of Side 2 of the first eBay promo copy, but I assume it has "BOD DYLAN" on the label. The other eBay promo copy (listed below as the third) is of the second release with "BOB DYLAN" and has promo stamps that say: "Disco de propaganda, prohibida su venta [Promotional disc, sale prohibited" on the rear sleeve and on both record labels.
Manuel García Jara has a promo copy of the first release with "BOD DYLAN" on both record labels and promo stamps which also say "Disco de propaganda, prohibida su venta [Promotional disc, sale prohibited" on the rear sleeve and on both record labels, as the second eBay promo copy. The record of Manuel García Jara's promo copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139.756, Side 2 - XSM 139.757. Lars M. Banke has a promo copy with promo stamps on the rear sleeve and Side 1 record label. "BOD DYLAN" is on the Side 1 label and "BOB DYLAN" on the Side 2 label.
Sergio Mariano Romay has a commercial copy released in 1973 with the same sleeve as the 1969 releases, but with different record labels. The record is now stereo instead of stereo/mono and the text typeface is completely different. The "33⅓" playing speed to the left of the centre hole is now missing, and the date "1973" is on the top line of the text to the right of the centre hole. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 139756-1G, Side 2 - XSM 139757-1G.
Thanks to Ulf Gyllenspetz and Renaud Depierreux for information and to Hans Seegers, Manuel García Jara and Sergio Mariano Romay for further information and scans.

(two variants),
1976; CBS 32675 PR (Spain), 1985 (three variants); CBS/Sony 32675 (Spain), 1990s:
Nashville Skyline was previously released in Spain by Discophon of
Barcelona in 1969 and Jan 1970 in mono, see Mono
Album Releases.
For some reason the album title is missing on the record labels of all Spanish releases of CBS S
63601 (it doesn't appear until the release of CBS 32675 in 1985 below). The
Discophon mono releases of CBS 63601 did have the album title!

CBS S 63601 (Spain)
- detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (1975 release - Discos
CBS address "Calle Princesa, 1, Madrid-13")
These releases from around 1975 were made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A., Madrid, and again have a white rear sleeve with the song titles and the Johnny Cash poem in English and Spanish, this time with the stereo information unboxed and the company's Madrid address (Calle Princesa, 1, Madrid-13). The records now have new-style orange/yellow CBS labels with song titles in English and Spanish and were also made in Spain. There are two variants - the text to the left and right of the centre hole looks the same, both with no arrows under "ESTEREO" and "33⅓" on a separate line on the left. However the continuous song titles under the centre hole are arranged differently. The first variant has "To be alone with you" split over two lines and "I threw it all away" on one line; the second variant has "To be alone with you" split differently over two lines, while "I threw it all away" is split over two lines with "threw" shown incorrectly as "the-rew". The copy of the record with the variant 2 labels shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 63601 A, Side 2 - 63601 B.

The variants 1 and 2 Side 1 labels have a "Depósito Legal" date of 1985, missing from variants 3 and 4. All Side 2 labels are dated 1974.
Lars M. Banke's variants 2 and 3 copies come in the same sleeve with the front "PRECIO REDONDO [NICE PRICE]" sticker in different positions. The sleeve looks the same. . The matrix numbers of the variant 2 record are: Side 1 - P O AL 32872 2A (stamped), 32675-A (handwritten), Side 2 - 63601 1C (stamped) 32675-B (handwritten).
Lars has a record with a fourth variant of the labels, the same as variant 3 but with longer circumference text. The text "Impusto de lujo a metalico - permiso num. 7053" has been added. Both labels have what looks like blurred green promo stamps. This time there is no front sticker. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P O AL 32675 2A (stamped) 32675 A (handwritten), Side 2 - 63601 B (stamped) 32675 B (handwritten).
CBS 32675 PR (Spain), 1987:
The 1987 release was still in the "Precio Redondo [Nice Price]" series, this time without a sticker, and came in the same sleeve as the 1985 release. The record had red CBS labels and was made for Discos CBS by Tecnodisco S.A., Madrid. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PQ AL 32872-2A, Side 2 - 63601-B0. The album title is again present on the labels!
CBS/Sony 465214 1 (Spain), 1989:
This album was re-released in 1989 as part of a CBS 2LP set called Two Originals. The records have red CBS labels and come in a gatefold sleeve with the original front sleeves in the centre. The original rear sleeves are missing. All four sides have a common joint album title. For more details, see

"Nashville Skyline" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40-63601 (Spain), 1978:
This cassette is of the first Spanish design, with a folded card insert with details of other CBS Spain cassette releases on the inside. The song titles are in Spanish and English on the insert, and in Spanish only on the cassette labels. The cassette is white with orange paper labels.

CBS CLS-5299 (Mexico), 1970:
For the Mexican mono album, see Mono
Album Releases.
CBS CLS-5299 (Mexico) - front scan by Hans Seegers (stereo) |
The song titles are
translated into Spanish on the front and rear sleeves and record labels. Both
front and rear sleeves have unique designs - on the rear sleeve the
Nashville skyline photo and the Johnny Cash poem are missing. The stereo
front sleeve has a strip across the top with the "STEREO"/arrow logo and the
bottom of the photograph is cut off compared to the mono front sleeve. The
rear sleeve is the same for both the mono and stereo releases, and the
record has orange CBS labels. One of the albums illustrated on the rear
sleeve, Projection 70, contains Lay, Lady, Lay and the stereo release
is included in
International
Albums (Various Artists Compilations) 1960s. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

"Lay Lady Lay [Nashville Skyline]" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS 19.045 (Argentina), late 1970, re-released late 1970s:
CBS 19.045 (Argentina), late 1970 (two variants):
CBS 19.045 (Argentina) - part front photo by Jordi Badell (1970 release) |
This is the regular Nashville Skyline album with the alternative title of Lay Lady Lay (just as Bringing It All Back Home was retitled Subterranean Homesick Blues in Holland). There was also a mono version, CBS 9.045, see Mono Album Releases. The 1970 front sleeve is the mono sleeve with a sticker says "ESTEREO: SONIDO 360°". Sides 1 and 2 are reversed to make Lay, Lady, Lay, now the title track, the first track on Side 1! The rear sleeve has a completely different design from the US/UK releases with a picture of Bob at the Isle of Wight Festival on 31 Aug 1969. It still contains the poem by Johnny Cash, translated into Spanish. The titles are also translated into Spanish. |

The matrix numbers of the 1970 copy shown are: Side 1 - AL S 432, Side 2 - AL S 433. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy with a tiny difference in the record labels - "COMAR" to the right of the centre hole on both sides is printed slightly higher, midway between "19.045" and "ALS 432/433".
CBS 19.045 (Argentina), late 1970s (promo release):
This Discos CBS Argentina promo stereo vinyl LP release of the 1969 album comes in a generic promo "DISCO PARA PROMOCION [PROMOTIONAL RECORD]" white card sleeve with a pasted label with typed song titles in Spanish. The record has orange/yellow Discos CBS Argentina labels with minimal typed text and promo stickers on both sides. It must be a promo for the first late 1970s release below. As for the commercial releases, Sides 1 and 2 are reversed so that Lay, Lady, Lay is the first song on Side 1. The handwritten matrix numbers are virtually illegible. The Side 1 sticker has "Disco para demostración. Venta prohibida [Demonstration Record. Sale prohibited]". The numbered stickers at front top left and on Side 2 probably indicate this copy belonged to a radio station.
CBS 19.045 (Argentina), re-released late 1970s (three variants):
CBS 19.045 (Argentina) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (late 1970s releases) |
The front sleeve of Manuel García Jara's late 1970s release no longer has the "ESTEREO" sticker, although the rear sleeve seems the same, including the mono catalogue number at top right. The record has new orange/yellow Discos CBS labels and Sides 1 and 2 are still reversed. The matrix numbers of the copy shown are again: Side 1 - ALS 432, Side 2 - ALS 433. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy in the same sleeve with different record labels. The "33⅓" below the centre hole is missing, as is the text "SADAIC-BIEM" to the right of the centre hole. "SADAIC" is Sociedad Argentina de Autores y Compositores, and its logo is on all Argentinean album releases from Blood On The Tracks in 1975 to Bajo El Cielo Rojo [Under The Red Sky] in 1990 (including Various Artists releases), although the first two Dylan albums to be released in Argentina, the 1967 compilation El Trovador De Nuestro Tiempo (see Mono Dylan-Only Compilation Albums 1960s) and the 1970 Lay Lady Lay above, had a unique "COMAR" copyright logo. Its omission on these labels is therefore very strange. I've called this the first late 1970s release and Manuel's copy the second. |

Sergio also has a second release copy with mixed record labels, the Side 1 label is the same as Side 1 of Manuel's copy, but the Side 2 label is missing "33⅓" below the centre hole. This Side 2 label has the "SADAIC-BIEM" logo missing from the labels of the first late 1970s release, so I assume copies exist with a similar Side 1. The sleeve of this copy is made of thinner cardboard than the earlier sleeves, so Sergio believes this was the final release. The record has the same matrix numbers as the other copies. Sergio points out that this is the only Argentinean Dylan album that has ever been reissued!

"Lay Lady Lay" - stereo cassette releases - Discos CBS 59.045 (Argentina), early 1970s, re-released late 1970s:
Both these stereo cassette releases also have the same title and Sides 1 and 2 reversed. The early 1970s release has a pink insert, plain white on the inside. The cassette is light grey with orange paper labels. "MADE IN USA" is embossed on the cassette case on Side 2 (the detail scan has heightened contrast to show the lettering).
The late 1970s release has a black insert, again plain white on the inside. The cassette is white with different orange paper labels. Manuel García Jara has a copy with a shorter black insert, again plain white on the inside, with the same cassette.

Quadraphonic Vinyl and Tape Releases
At the time there were three incompatible audio systems for quadraphonic sound, a confusion which probably led to the format's demise - Columbia releases used the Sony SQ system. This quadraphonic version was prepared by Neil Wilburn. The original quadraphonic version of Lay, Lady, Lay has been remastered by Steve Hoffman and appears on a Mobile Fidelity compilation called The Collection: An Adventure In Sound in 2016. This was reported to precede a 4.0 quadraphonic release of the album (which has so far not appeared).

"Nashville Skyline" - Quadraphonic vinyl LP releases: Columbia CQ 32872 (USA for export), 1974:
Columbia CQ 32872 (USA for export) - detail of rear with "Columbia"
erased twice with black marker pen, scan by Lars M. Banke (third copy)
Gerd has a second US export copy that has a "CBS SQ" sticker on the front
sleeve at top left covering the Columbia logo. The rear sleeve has no stickers
but the record labels now each have two gold shaped CBS stickers covering the
two instances of "Columbia". The record has the same stamped matrix numbers as
the first export copy.
Lars M. Banke found a third export copy in a shop in
Madrid. It is different from the two export copies already on the website
because it has yellow CBS stickers on the front sleeve and the over the spine.
"Columbia" is erased with black pen twice at the bottom of the rear sleeve.
There is also an HMV UK price sticker for £4.50 on the front sleeve plus a small
"star" sticker whose meaning is unknown. The yellow ring-shaped "CBS" stickers
on the labels are discoloured versions of the stickers from the first copy
already, with the "Columbia" ring visible through the stickers. The record has
stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PQ AL 32872 2A, Side 2 - PQ BL 32872
2A. The fifth copy bought somewhere in Europe has a very
faint yellow CBS sticker in the upper
left corner of the front sleeve. The sticker is not glued directly on the
sleeve, but is glued to the shrink-wrap. There are no stickers on the labels in
order to cover the Columbia logos. The matrix numbers are the same as above.

Thanks to Dr. Walter Roedl for information there was a US Quadraphonic 8-track cartridge release, Columbia CAQ 32872, also released in Canada. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"Nashville Skyline" - Quadraphonic vinyl LP releases: Columbia CQ 32872 (Canada), 1974, reissued 1976:
Columbia CQ 32872 (Canada) - detail of front, scan by Manuel García
Jara (both releases)
The two releases of the quadraphonic Canadian album have the same sleeve (front and rear). The sleeve of the 1976 release copy shown has a punch hole through the Columbia logo, surely a promotional mark. The 1974 release record has gold labels with the red Columbia SQ logos round the circumference in a white ring. The 1976 record labels are different, in a duller colour without the distinctive white ring of the 1974 release. Both 1974 and 1976 records were manufactured by Columbia Records of Canada, Ltd. The copy shown of the 1976 release has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P Q AL 32872-2A, Side 2 - P Q BL 32872-2A.

"Nashville Skyline" - Quadraphonic vinyl LP release: CBS Q 63601 (Spain), 1974, reissued 1976:
CBS Q-63601 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (1974
release)
CBS Q-63601 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (1976
release)
Only the quadraphonic Spanish releases had the original picture on the rear sleeve (all Spanish previous and subsequent editions had a white rear sleeve, except the copy with labels "Made in Spain" but sleeve printed in Holland, see below). The reissue of 1976 has the same rear with the CBS address of Calle Princesa, even though this album was released when CBS had moved to Avenida del Generalísimo. Both records have gold CBS Quadraphonic record labels, but the 1974 and 1976 record labels are slightly different. The mistake "Girl From The North" (without "Country") on side 1 of the record labels is also on the regular stereo edition of 1974 and the quad reissue of 1976 but, surprisingly, was corrected in subsequent releases (something unusual in Spain).

García Jara for information and scans.
