Original US stereo LP, Columbia PC 33235, 20 Jan 1975 The front picture is by Paul Till based on a photograph he took of Bob in Toronto in Jan 1974 (below left). Arie de Reus has a 10" x 8" print of the photo he bought from Paul Till. The first US (and all UK) pressings of the album had a rear sleeve with notes by famed New York journalist and author Pete Hamill surrounding a painting by David Oppenheim. Unfortunately these notes were based on and quoted lyrics from the original versions of the songs on the Blood On The Tracks acetates and test pressing, see 1974. Also the original New York musicians were credited, but not those from Minnesota. The sleeve notes were then removed and replaced by a new larger painting by David Oppenheim. The New York musician credits were also lost. However, to the great embarrassment of Columbia, Pete Hamill was subsequently awarded a Grammy for his sleeve notes! The original rear sleeve was then restored, but with white text because the original black text had been almost unreadable. The Minnesota musicians were never credited! Thanks to Rod MacBeath for information. Thanks to Simon Blokker for spotting that Dean Moriarty's name is misspelled "Deam Moriarty" on every rear sleeve that has the sleeve notes, even after they were restored. From Michael Krogsgaard's series of articles about "Bob Dylan's Recording Sessions", the Minnesota Dec 1974 musicians were: Greg Inhofer (keyboards), Bill Berg (drums), Chris Weber (guitar), Bill Peterson (bass), Peter Ostroushko (mandolin) and Kevin Odegard (guitar). The Minnesota sessions were produced by David Zimmerman (Bob's brother). Up to Sep 2003 the then current CD insert did not contain the sleeve notes, but they have now been restored in the booklet with the Sep 2003 hybrid SA-CD edition (see below). Blood On The Tracks was remastered by Columbia in 1997 but the remastered edition was never released. A remastered version of Buckets Of Rain, probably from that master, appeared on the Wonder Boys soundtrack album (see 2000) and the 2002 Moonlight Mile soundtrack album (see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations) 2002).Now, however, this title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). "Duquesne Whistle"/"Meet Me In The Morning (Alternate Take)" (limited edition "Record Store Day" 7" stereo single, 2012): Meet Me In The Morning (alternate take) (R-0935, see 2012), now included on the single CD release of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks (see below), but still a rarity because the version on that CD has been edited by around 40 seconds. Also of interest is the duet version of Buckets Of Rain by Bette Midler and Bob, from Bette's Atlantic album Songs For The New Depression, see 1976. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information that, although Planet Waves and Before The Flood were released in Yugoslavia, the next Yugoslav releases were The Basement Tapes and Desire. For some reason there was no Yugoslav release of Blood On The Tracks! Blood On The Tracks was also not released in Mexico. Thanks to Harold Lepidus for information in Jun 2018 that the next Bootleg Series will be Volume 14. It is going to be based around the Blood On The Tracks album and will be called More Blood, More Tracks. It will be released on 2 Nov 2018. An alternate take of Meet Me In The Morning was released in Nov 2012 as the B-side of Duquesne Whistle from Tempest, prompting incorrect speculation that Bootleg Series Vol. 10 would cover the Blood On The Tracks sessions. This alternate take plus the rarities listed above are all part of the new release, of which the 6CD Deluxe Edition is strictly limited, but because the tracks are remixed, the alternate takes of the album tracks remain rarities. |

Although this supposed vinyl test pressing sold on
eBay for €650 in Feb 2020, Gerd Rundel, Derek Barker and Jeff Gold of Record Mecca
are sure it is a fake. It has Columbia Recording Studios, New York, labels
dated "10/8/74" (8 Oct 1974) with typewritten and handwritten text. Columbia had Studio E at 49 East 52nd Street from 1966 right through until 1994 so it was certainly operating when the test pressing was made. Nevertheless, Bob Dylan didn’t use that studio. He recorded at 779 7th Ave. That was Columbia’s old studio which was closed and which had been taken over by Phil Ramone as a private recording facility called A&R Recording Studios. |

Arie de Reus has a vinyl test pressing of the withdrawn album (the other albums shown above are all acetates). This has blank generic Columbia Record Productions, Santa Maria, labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-33235-1A, Side 2 - PBL-33235-1A. It plays the withdrawn tracks on both sides, so full details are in 1974. Only two copies of this test pressing were known to exist, but Pete Bernard now tells me he obtained a third copy from the Automatt recording studio in San Francisco, CA, formerly the Columbia studio in the city, which is now in the possession of Hans Seegers. |

Promotional copy from the Columbia Records pressing plant in Pitman,
NJ, has white generic labels with "Bob Dylan" hand-written on Side 1. Side 2
has the same label, but no handwriting. The matrix numbers are: Side 1 - P
AL 33235 - 2C, Side 2 - P BL 33235 - 2D (which are surprisingly later than
the numbers for the promo LP below). Although Hans Seegers has doubts about
this item's authenticity, Bruce Partridge of Tacoma, WA, has another copy
without the handwritten "Bob Dylan" with the same matrix numbers he acquired
in the collection of
the owner of a large chain of Pacific Northwest record stores who received
large quantities of test pressings and promos especially from CBS. Bruce

The front sleeve has a promo strip with track timings. The rear sleeve is the first design - for this, see below. The records have white Columbia labels and the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-33235-2A, Side 2 - PBL-33235-2AA. (The "1A/1A" matrix numbers may have been on the Blood On The Tracks test pressing, which contains rarities, see 1974, although Chris Hood has a copy with "1A/1A" matrix numbers that does not.) "SIDE 1/2" to the right of the centre hole is not in italics, as on the labels of the first commercial release below. Gerd Rundel has a promo copy with a front timing strip and white record labels, the record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-33235-2C, Side 2 - PBL-33235-2AB. Renaud Depierreux has a third promo copy with white record labels and timing strip with right upper corner cut-off (both sleeve and inner sleeve). The first tape box is dated "1/24/75" (24 Jan 1975), the second "1/27/75" (27 Jan 1975) and the third "6/27/75" (27 Jun 1975). The third also has a Miami, FL, date stamp of "Jul 2, 1975". The covering letter shown belongs to the first tape box and is also dated "Jan 24, 1975".

Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy of this release with matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2A (stamped) followed by 2 T (faintly handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 33235-2AA (stamped) followed by 1 T (faintly handwritten). The cover is in violet. The inner sleeve is in the same color made of hard paper with “PC 33235” in white letters in one side only. The record has red Columbia labels. The "SIDE 1/2" text to the right of the centre hole is not in italics, as on the labels of the white label promo release above.
David Spano has a copy with matrix numbers Side 1 - P AL-33235-2A, Side 2 - P BL-33235-2L, while Geraldo Lagden has a copy of this first release with matrix numbers Side 1 - P AL-33235-2C, Side 2 - P BL-33235-2AB, Bob from Alphabet City Discs has a copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2C, Side 2 - P BL 33235-2AA while Renaud Depierreux has a copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL-33235-2D, Side 2 - P BL-33235-2AB. Jordan L. Gall has a copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2B (stamped) 2T (handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 33235-2L (stamped) 2T (handwritten). The "2T" means this copy was pressed at the Columbia plant at Terre Haute, IN. Renaud from France has a copy with exactly the same matrix numbers but which comes in a purple third release sleeve with white text, see below. Micah Whalen from Minnesota has a copy in a first release sleeve with matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2E, Side 2 - P BL 33235-2J.
Dale Hargraves has a copy of this first release with matrix numbers Side 1 - P AL-33235-2E, Side 2 - P BL-33235-1A that has the test pressing on Side 2 with alternate versions of If You See Her, Say Hello (R-0119) and Lily, Rosemary & The Jack Of Hearts (R-0116). This is confirmed by Sascha Kossjak, who has a copy of the same pressing. Arie de Reus confirms that the first vinyl test pressing did indeed have matrix numbers Side 1 - P AL-33235-1A, Side 2 - P BL-33235-1A (see above), so this apparently mispressed version has the test pressing on Side 2. Thanks to Harold Lepidus for the link to "Goldmine" magazine's web-site for an article by Tim Neely dated 28 May 2009 recording the discovery of a third copy with the original Side 2. Thanks to Justin Kau for news of a fourth copy with these rarities on Side 2 - the matrix numbers of this copy are also: Side 1 - P AL 33235 2E, Side 2 - P BL 33235 1A.
Heather Hively has a unique copy where the record labels are switched - the Side 1 label is on Side 2 of the album and vice-versa. The record has matrix numbers Side 1 - P AL-33235-2C, Side 2 - P BL-33235-2AB.

This test pressing is an oddity, in that it is dated
"5/7/75" (7 May 1975) and the album was commercially released on 20 Jan
1975. The tracks are exactly the same as the released album. Track 5 on Side
1 is mistitled as "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You're Gone". Presswell Records were based in Ancora, NJ, and normally made records for Atlantic. As Columbia's own pressing plant was at Pitman, NJ, it would at first sight seem odd that they asked Presswell to make a test pressing of an already released album. However, the album was selling well, and Columbia may have wanted more copies of the record than they could press themselves and needed to contract another pressing plant. This happened all the time in the days of vinyl (Beatles records were often pressed by Decca and other companies, because Parlophone couldn't keep up with the demand, and Columbia pressed Beach Boys albums for Capitol). Presswell could therefore have carried out some contract pressings for Columbia, because of excess demand, and this was a test pressing made by them as proof of quality. I'm told Presswell pressings have "PW" somewhere in the wax around the label, near where the matrix numbers are usually found, whereas Columbia pressings have a "C". My informants have never seen any copies of Blood On The Tracks with "PW", but the sales may have been confined to a small part of the USA, or Presswell may not actually have pressed any commercial copies after making this test pressing. The Buckinghams - "Made In Chicago"/Bob Dylan - "Blood On The Tracks" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia PC 33335/33235 (USA), 1975:

This much sought-after rarity is mispressed - Side 1 of the record is actually Side 1 of an album by The Buckinghams called Made In Chicago (Columbia PC 33335). The rear sleeve is the first design with the text in black, and the record has the original inner sleeve. The record itself has red labels with 'COLUMBIA' in yellow round the circumference, and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-33335-1B (the correct matrix number of the Buckingham's album), Side 2 - PBL 33235-2AB (the correct matrix number for Side 2 of Blood On The Tracks). Gerd Rundel's promo copy has these matrix numbers on the record and a hard-to-read red stamp "PROMOTION RECORD NOT FOR SALE" on the rear sleeve. Apparently there are 216 of these mispressed records in existence, the matrix number on Side 1 is the only way of identifying it as the mispressing. |

The "SIDE 1/2" text to the right of the centre hole is bold and in italics, the same as for the second US commercial pressing below, not the first release.
The Buckinghams were a rock band from Chicago who had a No. 1 single in the USA in 1967 with Kind Of A Drag. They had other US hits in the 1960s and Made In Chicago from 1975 was a "greatest hits" compilation. It was released on CD by Arcadia Records in 2001 and is still available. There is a "Rolling Stone" article from 27 Feb 1975 telling the story of a Madison, Wisconsin disc jockey who "had his mind blown when he slapped his brand-new copy of Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks on the station's turntable and out came... the Buckinghams singing Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)"!

The rear sleeve of the second commercial release of the album is now the second design with the full picture, and it has the original inner sleeve. The record has red Columbia labels. The "SIDE 1/2" text to the right of the centre hole now is now bold and in italics. Michael Palinkas has a copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 33235-2B, Side 2 - PBL 33235-2AA. Roger Sarao has a copy with a "Demonstration/Not For Sale" stamp in the upper left hand corner of the rear sleeve and matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 33235-2C (as Geraldo Lagden's copy of the first release above), Side 2 - PBL 33235-2AAA. Gerd Rundel also has a copy (shown) with a "Demonstration/Not For Sale" stamp at centre top of the rear sleeve and on the Side 1 record label. This copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 33235-2C, Side 2 - PBL 33235-2AJ. Craig Callahan's copy is later and has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 33235-2F, Side 2 - PBL-33235-2K). His copy of the third release (see below) has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 33235-2E, Side 2- PBL-33235-2J, which are ostensibly one pressing earlier! I can only assume that there was some overlap between the records and the sleeves. |

Robbie R has a second release copy where the record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2C (stamped) with "PXT" handwritten after and "D" next to "3" handwritten on the other side, Side 2 - P BL 33235-2AA (stamped) plus "IT" handwritten after as well as "D 1 3" handwritten.

The third commercial release of the album has the same front sleeve as before, but the rear sleeve has the first sleeve design restored with white text instead of black text. Gerd Rundel's copy of PC 33235 has an unusual sleeve of a dark violet cover instead of the expected maroon. It has the same front sticker promoting three tracks from the album as the www.eil.com second release copy above. These releases have the original inner sleeve.
Thanks to Rod MacBeath for finding a copy on eBay with a gold embossed stamp on the rear sleeve "For Governmental Sale Only". The purpose of this is unclear, but this copy was probably for sale on US military bases in the USA and abroad. I have details of a copy of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits II with the same stamp.
The record itself has red Columbia labels and stamped/handwritten matrix numbers. I have information about seven copies:

On Craig Callahan and Gerd Rundel's copies of JC 33235, the sleeve has a small sticker with “JC 33235” on the spine covering the original catalogue number of “PC 33235”. The front sticker still has “PC 33235”. The record labels have “JC 33235” as shown. Lars M. Banke has a copy of JC 33235 with the black text missing on the Side 2 record label. The Side 1 label is as normal. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1- P AL 33235 – 2B, Side 2 - P BL 33235 2L (earlier than the seven listed above).

Renaud from France has a copy with earlier matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2B (stamped) 2T (handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 33235-2L (stamped) 2T (handwritten). The "2T" means this copy was pressed at the Columbia plant at Terre Haute, IN. This comes in a third release sleeve with white text, but which is purple in colour. The inner sleeve is made of stiff dark red card as expected with the catalogue number "PC 33235" at bottom left. |

It came in a plain brown sleeve. The Dylan songs are: Tangled Up In Blue; Simple Twist of Fate; If You See Her, Say Hello; Shelter From The Storm.

This album was a mystery in that the country it was released is not identified. It has an American-style label, and both the sleeve and the record labels say it was manufactured in the USA (see "MFD. IN USA" at the bottom of the label on the left side). However, it has CBS logos in the ring round the circumference of the label and the UK catalogue number CBS 69097 as below. The sleeve is not laminated. The rear sleeve has the same design as the first US release with the first David Oppenheim picture and black text. Manuel García Jara has the definitive answer from his father's notebooks regarding a copy identical to this bought in Singapore in Apr 1975: "Before the edition of CBS/Sony for Malaysia and Singapore with a blue sleeve, Blood On The Tracks was previously released in Malaysia in a maroon gatefold sleeve by CBS-Sony, but Singapore did not have its own release; in this country copies manufactured in the USA were sold, although they have, for legal reasons, CBS labels and the European catalogue number." The Singapore PC 33235 Hup Hup copy with a maroon gatefold sleeve below contradicts this, so obviously both releases exist! |

It has the same maroon inner card sleeve as the UK with the "69097" catalogue number. The record was made in the USA and has red US-style labels with "CBS" in a ring round the circumference instead of "Columbia". These are on what look like printed red ring-shaped stickers. The copy shown has stamped US matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33235-2D, Side 2 - P BL 33235-2AB (see above for similar matrix numbers). It is identical to Hans Seegers' copy sold in Singapore immediately above! Gerd Rundel also has an identical copy with the same record matrix numbers as Arie's copy.

Lars M. Banke has a copy of what looks like the second Columbia US commercial release of PC 33235 that was bought in Australia. All instances of "Columbia" on the rear have been obscured with black marker pen. The rear sleeve has the second US design. The ring of Columbia logos round the circumference of the record labels has been obscured by a black painted ring, not a ring-shaped sticker as with many US and Canadian export copies. The "SIDE 1/2" text to the right of the centre hole is in italics (see the US release above). The record of this 1980s copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL-33235-2F, Side 2 - P BL-33235-2J.

The rear sleeve is the third US design with white text and an added bar code. The copy shown is a promo with a gold rectangular promotional stamp at the top left of the rear sleeve. This release has a laminated sleeve and a gate-folded insert. Renaud Depierreux has a commercial copy without the promo stamp.
Thanks to Ben Clayton for the information this recording runs approximately 2% more slowly than other pressings of the album, resulting in slightly longer track times. Ben finds this is explained in Clinton Heylin's book "Dylan: Behind Closed Doors, The Recording Sessions 1960-1994" (page 107): "As a further sleight of hand, Dylan seems to have actually sped up the resultant album., both Minneapolis and New York cuts, by two percent, in the mastering - presumably because he found the material dragged a little. The vinyl "half-speed master" evidently used the pre-sped up tape, making for quite a different listening experience."
Les Kokay says he cannot hear any significant difference in sound between this and the regular stereo release.

Richard Feirstein says: "I have a CX-encoded version of Blood On The Tracks. CX was a record and laserdisc noise reduction system Columbia tried to introduce just before CDs were introduced. It is very quiet and a bit compressed from the normal version when not played through a CX expander." According to Wikipedia, CX (Compatible Expansion) was originally designed by CBS in the late 1970s as a noise-reduction technology for vinyl LP records. CX required a special decoder connected to a stereo system, in order to fully reproduce the CX-encoded sound on the LP. However, CX-encoded records could also be played without a decoder, with a resulting reduced (claimed acceptable, although not according to Richard) amount of dynamic range compression. Relatively few hardware decoder boxes were sold. Approximately 70 CX-encoded LP titles were released by CBS in 1982 in the United States, plus a small number in the Netherlands. The sleeve of this release has “JC 33235” on the spine. The rear has a black/white “CX” sticker next to the barcode. The record labels have the “CX” logo printed above "BOB DYLAN" and have matrix numbers “CXAL 533235" and "CXBL 533235” to the right of the centre hole on Sides 1 and 2 respectively. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CXAL533235-2B, Side 2 - CXBL533235-2E, plus “COLUMBIA NY” stamped on each side.

This mid 1980s US copy has similar matrix numbers, sleeve and labels to other copies shown but it doesn't match exactly any of them. The rear sleeve has the third design with the restored sleeve notes in white plus a barcode. The spine has catalogue number "FC 33235" although the record labels have "JC 33235". These labels have an identical typeface to that of copies released in the 70s, but there is an inverted triangle in a black circle to the left of the centre hole on Side 1 only. This symbol was used for the first time on the Columbia US Biograph labels (1985). The record has handwritten matrix numbers which are similar but not identical to those of the latest releases ("Jazz Masterpieces" and 1990s copies): Side 1 - <P.AP> AL-33235-G2C G1, Side 2 - <P.AP> BL-33235-G2G G2. Gerd Rundel has found a copy on the Internet where the rear sleeve has a slightly different barcode. |

Éamonn Ó Catháin has a copy of this album and says there are very strong volume fluctuations on Idiot Wind, not present on any version of this track on CD. I don't know if this is a known fault on this release.

The rear sleeve is the third US design with white text and an added bar code (as the mid 1980s release above). This release also has a laminated sleeve. Craig Callahan tells me the later Columbia vinyl releases were pressed under licence by a company called Scorpio, and are of poor quality. This is because they were not pressed from new masters made from the original source tapes, but from old masters left over from the 1980s. There is also a Mobile Fidelity hybrid SA-CD release of this album in stereo only, not 5.1 surround sound as on the 2003 Columbia hybrid SA-CD release.

This 8-track stereo cartridge release has a revised track order to make the four "programs" of approximately equal length. The first copy has an orange tape cartridge with two paper labels.

Columbia JCA 33235 comes in a black slipcase with cut-outs front and rear to show the album artwork and track listing. This time the cartridge is black with a single wrap-around label. The end of the cartridge has a sticker with the new catalogue number "JCA 33235" covering the old catalogue number.

Both copies shown of Columbia PCT 33235, the cassette release of this album, have a folded card insert. The extended flap of the outside of the inserts and the inside of the inserts contain details of other Columbia US cassette releases. The album owned by Steven Fant must be the first US cassette release:
The outside of the cassette insert is exactly the same as that of Gerd Rundel's copy but the inside lists completely different cassette releases.
The cassette has white paper labels, while the next release cassette has no labels.
The sticker on the end of the cassette case has maroon text, not black.
There are numbers including the catalogue number on top of the cassette.

Gerd Rundel's copy has the same insert on the outside, but with different Columbia cassettes releases on the inside. This time the cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The white sticker on the end of the cassette case now has black text.

I date the next release as around 1977
because the first LP release was PC 33235 in 1975, followed by JC 33235 in
1977. This cassette is Columbia JCT 33235. This time the inside of the
cassette insert is blank. The cassette is again light grey with black text
identical to that of the second 1975 release apart from the catalogue
number, there are again no paper labels. Gerd Rundel's 1990s copy has a wider insert, now with a barcode, again blank on the reverse. The rear of the cassette insert now has an Internet address for Sony Online. The cassette is smoked transparent grey with white text, also with catalogue number "JCT 33235". The downward facing triangle first appeared on Side 1 of record labels and cassettes with Biograph in 1985. |

This album uses the second US rear sleeve design. The record labels have the Columbia logos in a ring round the circumference. Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. became CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976, and as this release has CBS Records Canada Ltd. on the rear sleeve and record labels it dates from after then.

The first copy was bought in Sweden and the "Columbia" logos on the rear sleeve and spine erased with black marker pen. The rear sleeve is the design above with the bottom text lines left aligned with CBS Records Canada Ltd. The record labels have white ring-shaped stickers covering the "Columbia" logos.
The second late 1970s copy was also bought in Sweden and the record has black ring-shaped stickers, but the "Columbia" logos on the rear sleeve are not obscured. The rear sleeve is again the design above. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-33235-1B-2-GZ, Side 2 - BL-33235-1B-2-GZ.
The third export copy has five instances of Columbia obscured at the bottom of the rear sleeve. The labels this time have the ring of Columbia logios obscured with black marker pen, and "CBS" to the right of the centre hole is inexplicably obscured with black marker pen also.
The fourth export copy, again bought in Sweden, has a single gold sticker on the rear sleeve at bottom right covering the Columbia logo. The record this time has glossy gold ring-shaped stickers.

The later 1970s release still has catalogue number "PCT 33235" and a different insert. The cassette is black with golden text, there are no paper labels.
I only have an insert for the next release - it looks the same as that of the "VPCT 33235" insert below but has still catalogue number "PCT 33235". Scans of the related cassette required.

Thanks to Harold Lepidus and Arie de Reus for finding two UK test pressings from CBS Recording Studios, Whitfield Street, London, for sale by Omega Hollywood. The first is of the very rare original album, for details see 1974. The second is of the commercially released album. Michael Gray has a copy of a test pressing of the commercially released album with blank white labels. The test pressing shown has orange CBS Recording Studios labels with handwritten text. It comes in a plain white card sleeve with handwritten text on the front. Arie de Reus is sceptical that these UK test opressings are genuine.
The commercial album has the first US rear sleeve design with the deleted sleeve notes by Pete Hamill and the first picture by David Oppenheim - for notes about the original "New York Sessions" test-pressing and the US replacement sleeve see above and 1974. There is no "Stereo"/CBS logo on the front sleeve, nor on any subsequent UK release.
The record comes in a plain maroon cardboard inner sleeve with "CBS 69097" at bottom left and has 1960s-style CBS orange labels with the catalogue number "CBS S 69097". The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-69097-A2, Side 2 - CBS-S-69097-B2.

Clay Ellwood has a copy in a Shorewood sleeve with the replacement rear design, although the record still has the same plain orange labels and the same matrix numbers as my copy. The rear sleeve is the same as that illustrated here for these UK pressings from approx. 1976. The front sleeve is the same as for the late 1970s/early 1980s release below. The rear sleeve of the releases shown here is different from the late 1970s/early 1980s sleeve because it does not yet have the boxed “CB|271” and “54” in a circle at top right next to the CBS/Stereo logo, or the “LC|0149” in a capsule above the printer's name “Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.” at bottom right. The record still comes in the plain maroon cardboard inner sleeve with catalogue number "CBS 69097", but now has orange/yellow CBS labels, with different text layout from the plain orange record labels, and also different from the second labels shown. The record of the copy of the first mid-1970s release shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-69097-A2 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS-S-69097-B-3 (handwritten). The second mid-1970s release has exactly the outer and inner sleeves, but the record labels are the same as those of the late 1970s/early 1980s release below except that ”LC|0149” in a capsule is not yet printed left of the centre hole. There were at least seven further releases of the UK vinyl LP, six on CBS and one on Columbia. The illustrated release dates from the late 1970s/early 1980s and the sleeve has catalogue number "CBS 69097" while the record labels have "CBS S 69097". The rear sleeve has the replacement design with the second picture by David Oppenheim and the printer's name “Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.". The rear sleeve has "CB|271" boxed and "54" in a circle at top right next to the CBS/Stereo logo. The bottom of the rear sleeve and the record labels of the first variant have “LC|0149” in a capsule to the left of the centre hole. |

The records have orange/yellow CBS labels and comes like my listed 1975 copy and the two 1976 copies above in a plain maroon card inner sleeve with catalogue number "CBS 69097".
On the variant 1 labels "Big Ben Music" is credited on each song title line. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-69097-A-5, Side 2 - CBS-S-69097-B-3.
The variant 2 late 1970s/early 1980s variant comes in the same sleeve as shown. These record labels have CBS copyright info at the bottom and “MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text, like the first mid-1980s copy shown below. However, these labels are an anomaly in that they do not have the expected "LC|0149" code left or right of the centre hole, as the first variant does. "Big Ben Music" is credited below the song titles only. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-69097-A6, Side 2 - CBS 69097 B4 (after those of the first variant, and the same matrix numbers as those of the first mid-1980s copy below).
Peter Oudejans has a record with a third label variant. It again does not have the expected "LC|0149" code left or right of the centre hole. "Big Ben Music" is credited below the song titles only. This label has "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text and no text at the bottom. I do not have the Side 2 label of this variant.

These mid 1980s releases have the same sleeve as already shown for the late 1970s/early 1980s release. The records also come in a plain maroon cardboard inner sleeve with catalogue number "CBS 69097", and now have red CBS labels, still with catalogue number "CBS S 69097". The labels have a different text layout from the ones below. Like the second variant orange/yellow record labels immediately above, the “LC|0149” capsule present on the first variant orange/yellow labels immediately above is again missing (it's also present on the labels below, so these labels are another anomaly). The record also comes in a plain maroon cardboard inner sleeve with catalogue number "CBS 69097". It again has red CBS labels with “MADE IN ENGLAND” and CBS copyright info in the circumference of the labels. This time there is an "LC|0149" capsule to the right of the centre hole. The arrows logo below "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole is now missing, and the song titles are left aligned. The orange/yellow CBS record labels have catalogue number "S 69097" and a very different text layout from that of the UK orange/yellow label release above. The record labels of the first release have both "Record mfd. in Ireland" and "MADE IN ENGLAND" below the song titles. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for spotting two mistakes on the Irish Side 1 label - Simple Twist Of Fate is listed as "Simple Twist Of Faith" and You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go is listed as "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome WhenYou Go". Éamonn also points out that on Side 2 the comma is missing from If You See Her, Say Hello. The record comes in a custom inner sleeve with the catalogue number now at bottom centre instead of at bottom left as on my UK copy above. Also, while the inner sleeve with Éamonn's very dark UK 1975 copy is much lighter than the outer sleeve, the outer sleeve that comes with the Irish copy is much lighter than the inner sleeve. In fact, if swapped around, inner and outer sleeves would match on both examples!
The second release record comes in the same UK outer sleeve and the same maroon inner as the first release record. The record labels of the second release now only have "Record mfd. in Ireland" below the song titles. All the mistakes on the first release record Side 1 and Side 2 labels are repeated. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 69097 A3 (stamped) ALLEN (handwritten), Side 2 - CBS-S 69097-B-3 TTY (all handwritten).

This 1998 audiophile release was issued on heavyweight 180gm vinyl by the UK company Absolute Analogue under licence from Columbia. It also uses the original 69097 catalogue number. There is an Absolute Analogue front sticker. It restores the original rear sleeve with Pete Hamill's Grammy Award winning sleeve notes in black, with a barcode at top right.
This is of much higher quality than the US vinyl releases. Éamonn Ó Catháin says this must be one of the finest pressings of this album, and that Tangled Up in Blue plays at the correct speed.
The record has distinctive dark orange labels and the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 69097 A - 01 - 1 - 1, Side 2 - 69097 B - 01 - 1 - 1.

This 2000 release was issued by the UK company Simply Vinyl under licence from Columbia. The record is again of much higher quality than the US vinyl releases. The rear sleeve has the design of the second US release but with a barcode. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for noticing that Idiot Wind is missing from the tracklisting (this mistake does not occur on other releases with the second release rear design). The record labels mimic the original UK labels.

8-track was a continuous tape cartridge format, with four stereo "programs" per tape. This cartridge is made of white plastic, contained inside a black slipcase. The slipcase of the copy owned by Hans Seegers is different from that of Manuel García Jara, but the tape cartridges appear to be the same. The track order was rearranged to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length:
Program 1: Tangled Up In Blue; Simple Twist Of Fate, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go
Program 2: You're A Big Girl Now; Buckets Of Rain; if You See Her, Say Hello

Nigel Barker has a UK cassette with orange CBS paper labels that is probably the first release, but sadly it is missing its insert. This cassette does not have Dolby noise reduction. Manuel García Jara has a copy of the same release with its insert. The inside of the insert has a voucher to send off for a free CBS catalogue. The cassette of Manuel's copy has "KOREA" moulded into both sides and orange CB paper labels with blank text. Manuel thinks the blank cassettes were imported from Korea, and then recorded and had labels added in the UK. Nigel's cassette does not have "KOREA". You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go and Buckets Of Rain are switched round. |

The late 1970s release has the same outside insert, but a different inside, omitting the free CBS catalogue details. The cassette now has Dolby noise reduction and is light grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The text has the same layout as the text on the previous release's orange paper labels. This cassette does not yet have "LC|0149" capsules printed on each side - see the detail scan above.

Manuel's 1980s stereo cassette with Dolby noise reduction has a shorter folded insert with the tracklisting on the inside. The insert now has anti-counterfeiting printing on the rear fold, on the left of the scan. The cassette is light grey with black text with a different layout from that of the 1970s cassettes, there are again no paper labels. It now has an "LC|0149" capsule printed on each side of the cassette below the Dolby symbol - see the detail scan. Paul Shenton has a copy of this cassette with the insert from the previous late 1970s release above.

This 1990s cassette release is now on the Columbia label and has a new catalogue number, Columbia 467842 4. There is a 1992 Dutch vinyl release with this catalogue number, Columbia 467842 1, but a UK vinyl release with that number is not yet listed here. This release has a wider folded insert with a barcode. The cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The cassette text no longer includes the song titles. Paul Shenton's copy has the same cassette but a different insert. The catalogue number printed on the inside of the insert has been moved to the outside rear, and the rear barcode is now in a box.

The first Dutch release in 1975, CBS 69097, was essentially the same as the first US release with a non-laminated sleeve with the deleted sleeve notes by Pete Hamill and the first picture by David Oppenheim on the rear. The "Stereo"/CBS logo on the front was in black, although only for this first release. There are two variants of the rear sleeve, both with "y" in a circle in the top right hand corner. One has "Made in USA" on the second line of text next to the CBS logo, this is missing from the other variant. Both sleeves have "printed in Holland" as the fourth text line next to the CBS logo. I suspect the sleeve with "Made in USA" is the first variant. |

Gerd Rundel has a copy of this album bought as part of a French set from 1978, CBS CM9, with Desire and Hard Rain, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 1970s. The 3LP set has an outer sleeve to hold all three albums that was printed in France, although the records themselves were made in Holland. This third Dutch release has the same front sleeve as the second 1975 release and "y" in a circle on the rear sleeve at top right plus "54" in a second circle, and "LC|0149" in a capsule at bottom right. The orange/yellow CBS record labels have a star above the side numbers to the right of the centre hole, not present on the second 1975 release record labels. Hans Seegers also has a copy with a bold embossed Sony Music promo stamp with text in Portuguese "DISCO PROMOCIONAL VENDA PROIBIDA [PROMOTIONAL RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]".

This record is #2 of a series called "Il Rock" published by Italian company DeAgostini in 1988-89. There is no date on the record labels apart from 1975, but the sleeve is dated 1988. The rear sleeve has the second US design without Pete Hamill's sleeve notes. The record has red CBS labels with the "Il Rock" logo and the number 2 in the series, and sides numbered IGDA-1005 and IGDA-1006. The labels also have added text "NON IN VENDITA Allegato al fascicolo n. 2 "Il Rock" - DeAgostini [NOT FOR SALE except with magazine #2 "Il Rock" - DeAgostini]" as it was not for sale in record stores but only on news stands or in book stores. |

This stereo vinyl is part of a 41LP DeAgostini set called Bob Dylan Vinyl Collection to be published between 15 Nov 2018 to 15 Jul 2020. Blood On The Tracks was the 16th record in this series, released on 29 Jun 2019 (see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s). There is no catalogue number on the sleeve or the record labels, which are dated "2018". The record labels have the Columbia logo but the orange/yellow design used only from the mid-1970s to early 1980s by CBS, not Columbia.

The first release, made in Spain by Discos CBS, is very limited and difficult to find with all the inserts: although some copies were sold in record shops, it was made to send to radio stations. The front sleeve has a dark maroon colour (each of the four Spanish editions had a lighter maroon colour than the previous release!).
The rear sleeve is unique to Spain with the original design (the painting by David Oppenheim and the liner notes by Pete Hamill in black text translated into Spanish). This copy has a sticker of a radio station in Granollers, next to Barcelona. The credits are in Spanish and the song titles are in English and Spanish. The inner sleeve is plain maroon card, same both sides.
The labels are orange with song titles in English and Spanish. (From 1970 to 1973 all the Spanish releases have orange labels. In 1974 CBS Spain started to use orange labels for first editions and orange/yellow labels for reissues: first reissue with orange/yellow labels was Bob Dylan; the last album with orange labels for the first pressing was The Basement Tapes (1975) and the first album with orange/yellow labels for the first pressing was Desire (1976). The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - PAL-33235-2D, Side 2 - PBL-33235-2AG.

This album includes a fold-out poster/booklet, the size of four LP sleeves when unfolded, with the album lyrics in English and all the Dylan albums released in Spain: a very useful guide for collectors because it lists all formats available for each album: LP, cassette, TC8 and Quadraphonic releases. It also includes a beautiful black and white photo of Dylan saluting to the audience after a concert. This booklet also mentions the Spanish edition of "Writings and Drawings Volume 1". Finally this album comes with an advertising postcard to order the Spanish edition of the Dylan book "Writings and Drawings Volume 1", distributed in Spain by CBS itself, offering a discount with a drawing by Dylan and with a postal stamp of the effigy of Franco, "the Generalísimo", who died this year.
Gerd Rundel has a copy of the first Spanish release where the Side 1 record label has all the pre-printed CBS Spain text missing, with only the variable text printed!

Lars M. Banke has an alternate copy with orange labels in the later sleeve with the large drawing on the rear as below. The third Spanish release, the second with a record with orange/yellow CBS labels was released in Jan 1976. The sleeve and matrix numbers are identical to those of the second release, still including the first CBS Spain address (Calle Princesa 1). Although it was released only two months later than the second release, the record labels are quite different from those of the second edition:
There is now a Stereo arrows logo under the word "Estéreo" to the left of the centre hole
The tracklist text has one more line on each side (seven lines instead of six).

Paul Shenton's copy has a front sticker with "PRECIO REDONDO [NICE PRICE]". The 1983 rear sleeve has the new catalogue number at top right and is again the second US design with titles in Spanish only. The CBS Spain address is now Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16. There is no maroon inner sleeve. The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels with titles in Spanish and English. The two record label variants shown have the same text layout and differ only in the circumference text. Paul Shenton's copy must date from 1983 and has the same longer circumference text as the 1970s releases above. Manuel García Jara's copy must date from the mid-1980s and has the same shorter circumference text as the 1989 release with red record labels below.

The front sleeve again has a similar light maroon to the 1980s releases. The 1989 rear sleeve is again the second US design, see above. The CBS Spain address is again Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16. The 1989 record has red CBS labels with the added text "Disco promocional/Prohibida su Venta" [Promotional record/Sale Prohibited] at the bottom of the labels, even though it's not strictly a promotional item. This is because it was not to be sold without the magazine. In this series all records of CBS artists came with similar promotional text printed on labels. (See above scans of some of them: Byrds, Big Brother, Simon & Garfunkel.) The song titles on the rear sleeves and the record labels are translated into Spanish as before. The year "1983" printed on labels is the date of the last "Depósito Legal" (Spanish copyright application), not the year of release. The circumference text is the shorter version introduced with Manuel's copy with orange/yellow record labels immediately above.
David Abarca Esteve has a test pressing with exactly the same record labels as shown in a white card sleeve from Sonic S.A. of Barcelona. the rear sleeve is plain white.

This record with the promo text on the labels was also released as part of a series called "Rock. La Música. Los Intérpretes" (Rock. The Music. The Performers) published by Editorial Planeta-DeAgostini (Planeta is a Spanish publisher, De Agostini is from Italy) between 1989-1990: There were 110 magazines with records (one weekly), available in LP and cassette. The announcement said "the unique collection with original artworks". This is the reason why the record sleeves or labels do not mention the series. The first issue was on the market in the first days of January (1989). The record was the 2LP set Love You Live [The Rolling Stones] and Dylan was on the cover of the magazine. Blood On The Tracks was the second album of this series while the magazine cover has Joan Baez. For the cassette given away with alternate copies of the same issue 2, see below. DeAgostini published a series called "Il Rock" in Italy in 1988: this Italian collection may not be exactly the same series as published in Spain but Blood On The Tracks was also the second record in that series (see above).

This is the first Spanish cassette release and has the first Spanish design for tapes: an insert with two panels and a cassette with orange paper labels. There is a sticker on the front of the second copy shown with the text "Holanda Radio Luz" in Málaga, South of Spain, actually a record shop not a radio station. The printer is Gráficas Dauco, Madrid, and the insert has the CBS Spain address Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13. The insert and cassette have the usual bad Spanish translations "Enredado en el azul" and "Cobijo contra la lluvia" - see above. The only Bob Dylan album listed on the inside of the cassette insert is Greatest Hits. |

There are differences on the inside of the insert: the list of CBS Spain cassette releases is different, as well as Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits now including now Desire, released in Jan 1976, but not Hard Rain, not released until Sep 1976. The printer is now Indugraf instead of Gráficas Dauco, and the insert now has the then brand new CBS Spain address (Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16).
The rest of the artwork (with the usual bad translations "Enredado en el azul" and "Cobijo contra la lluvia" - see above) and the orange paper cassette labels are identical to those of the previous release.

The insert is virtually identical to that of the previous release - it has the regular artwork and the same translated titles as the other Spanish releases with the usual bad translations "Enredado en el azul" and "Cobijo contra la lluvia". However cassette Side 2 now has the correct translation "Cobijo Contra La Tormenta"! The cassette also has text "Promocional. Prohibida su venta" on both sides, even though it's not strictly a promotional item. Because of the promotional advice below the titles, there’s not enough space for all the titles: Side 1 has ..."Viento Idiota" y otros (and others); Side 2 has ..."Cobijo Contra La Tormenta" y otros. The cassette has the new style CBS logo on each side.

This is the original Greek pressing of Blood On The Tracks. It has the same catalogue number as the UK and Dutch releases above and the first US design rear sleeve, and is essentially identical to the first Dutch release. It was made in Greece by Music-box, Athens, and the sleeve was printed by Fotiadis & Ioannidis. As far as I know, this was the last Greek release to be made by Music-box. The front is not laminated and has a black CBS logo (the Dutch version above has a white CBS logo). The rear sleeve has black text and even "Printed in Holland" has been left by mistake. The record of this copy has dark orange CBS labels. The labels have same typeface as the 1975 Dutch labels, except for the text "Made in Greece" and the number "3257" below the stereo arrows logo. They even have the Dutch "BIEM"/"STEMRA" copyright logo. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 69097-A, Side 2 - 69097-B. Hans Seegers' 1975 record has CBS dark-red "original first pressing" 1960s-style labels with stamped matrix numbers Side 1 - 69097 A, Side 2 - 69097 B. |

Manuel García Jara's late 1970s copy has a front sticker in Greek which means "INCLUDES SONG LYRICS IN GREEK". The rear sleeve is the second US design. There was a double-sided insert with the song lyrics in Greek as advertised on the front. Lars M. Banke's late 1970s copy has a completely different sleeve with a violet front and different English/Greek text at the bottom of the rear. The copy shown has a price sticker of 330 drachmas on the rear. The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels but with a later design with the Dutch "BIEM" logo missing, two lines of circumference text and Greek text at the bottom of the labels. These albums with the European catalogue number were made in Israel by CBS Records Ltd. of Tel Aviv. The sleeve of the first release is of better quality card than that of the second release. The rear sleeve has the original design with black text on a white background. The first release has the CBS Israel information in English and Hebrew printed in pink along the rear sleeve bottom. The second release has this information in English only printed in black. The records have orange CBS labels and both copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69097-AII, Side 2: S 69097-BII. On the first release record labels "MADE IN ISRAEL" is printed in English and Hebrew, on the second release labels it's in English only. The copyright information round the circumference is much longer on the second release labels, and the "CBS" of the catalogue number is missing from right of the centre hole.

This 2LP "UltraDisc One Step" boxed set playing at 45RPM was released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs in 2019 in the USA in a limited edition of 9,000 numbered copies. Copies were imported into Japan by Sony Music with catalogue number SIJP 88-89, price ¥22,000 (tax included), the cost as high as Bootleg Series boxes. They came with an obi based on CBS/Sony SOPO 20 (1975 above) and a Japanese-language booklet with liner notes by Kenta Hagiwara, officially registered lyrics, and translations of Pete Hamill's essay and lyrics by Goro Nakagawa. The records themselves are UD1S 2-006, the same as the US release. |

Raja Abdul Razak Raja Musa and Gerd Rundel each have a copy of the first Malaysia release in a gatefold sleeve with the US catalogue number. The inside of the gatefold is completely maroon, like the US inner sleeve, with only a catalogue number in white. It uses the first US rear sleeve design with the Pete Hamill liner notes. The gatefold sleeve was printed locally by "K.M.I.L.P.J." for Hup Hup Records and CBS/Sony for sale in both Malaysia and Singapore. This means "King Music Industries Limited Petaling Jaya", based in Malaysia, which was owned and operated by Hup Hup (Petaling Jaya is a suburb of Kuala Lumpur). The Malaysian copy has a record which was manufactured in Malaysia by Hup Hup Records, as stated on the record labels. This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-33235, Side 2 - BL-33235. Gerd Rundel has a copy with the identical sleeve where the record was manufactured in Singapore, also by Hup Hup Records. This copy also has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-33235, Side 2 - BL-33235. |

The amazing Singapore/Malaysia EMI release is the only one worldwide with a light blue sleeve instead of maroon! It again uses the first US rear sleeve design with the Pete Hamill liner notes. It was jointly manufactured and distributed for CBS/Sony in Singapore by EMI (Singapore) PTE. Limited and in Malaysia by EMI (Malaysia) SDN, BHD. The 1975 record has orange/black CBS/Sony labels and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PC 33235A, Side 2 - PC 33235B. This label design was also used for the Singapore/Malaysia release of Desire in 1976. |

The printed song timings are different from those on the US release (see above). This record label has the same design as the Singapore/Malaysia release of Saved. The matrix numbers are the same as the previous release. As far as I can see the sleeves are identical.

The second release from around 1976 now has the second US rear sleeve design. The record now has orange/yellow CBS labels. They have the title and artist name on one line, the same as on the first release labels. Early Australian release labels like these had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.) |

The 1975 record came in an inner sleeve with pictures of contemporary CBS albums on one side, and pictures of albums from other companies whose records the Gramophone Record Co released in South Africa on the other (not shown). The record has plain orange 1960s-style CBS labels. Lars M. Banke has two copies of a label variant . The position of "1 - 5. Ram's Horn Music (MCPS)" is different compared to Hans Seegers' copy. The two copies of this label variant have slightly different labels (different lettering).

The records of the late 1970s releases both have orange/yellow CBS labels, although only the first mentions the Gramophone Record Co (Pty) Ltd - this text is missing on the second orange/yellow labels. The first late 1970s copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1837-AL33235, Side 2 - ASF 1837-BL33235.

The album was also released with this catalogue number in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), also made by the Gramophone Record Co (Pty) Ltd. Elmer Biewenga's copy does not have the Interpak logo on the sleeve, so may well be Rhodesian. This is the first Rhodesian pressing of this album. The sleeve is almost identical to that of the South African release except for the important detail of a small sticker with the code "4-A", used by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo, in the same position where the Interpak logo is printed in the South African sleeve; however, there is no Interpak logo beneath this sticker, so this sleeve was printed by Belmont. The "4-A" code and others starting with "4" were used by Belmont for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record companies for whom they printed sleeves. The record labels are orange with some differences from the South African edition: the colour is lighter; the album title is shorter; the "Side 1/2" and speed information are in different positions and with different characters. |

The records of both these releases have matrix number: Side 1 - ASF 1837 - AL 33235, Side 2 - ASF 1837 - BL 33235.
Rhodesian records released in the 1960s are virtually identical to the South African albums except for the text "Made in S. Rhodesia" in the matrix numbers or on a sticker; the Rhodesian sleeves of this period were also printed also by Record Pac or Interpak. From the late 1960s and especially in the early 1970s there is some evidence that Rhodesian sleeves were printed by a different company, Belmont Printers of Bulawayo: on some sleeves the Interpak logo is missing (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Nashville Skyline), or almost deleted (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II) but the usual Belmont code "4-A" was not present. This is the earliest record so far found where this code is present.

This new album was released in Rhodesia in the late 1970s. The sleeve is almost identical to that of the 1976 release but now the Belmont Printers code "4-A" is printed (not a sticker) near the CBS logo on the rear sleeve at top right, with part of the "A" missing on the commercial copy shown. The record labels are now white with blue text and the CBS logo in a box. This style of record label was used by CBS Rhodesia from late 1976 up to late 1980. Lars M. Banke has found a promo copy with a stamp on the front sleeve. The rear sleeve is the same as the commercial copy, although the "4-A" code is complete. The record labels are the same as those of Manuel's commercial copy.

After Zimbabwean independence, CBS record labels were orange/yellow from late 1980 to 1986. The Zimbabwean release comes in the usual flimsy paper sleeve as other Zimbabwe pressings. the rear sleeve again has the "4-A" of Belmont Printers, and part of the "A" is still missing as with the late 1970s Rhodesian commercial copy. The original owner has written a date of "13/7/85" (13 Jul 1985) on both record labels. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-35453 DNW 2140, Side 2 - BL-35453 DNW 2140. |

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information that "CX 50" is probably CX 50 Radio Independencia, a commercial AM radio station based in Montevideo, Uruguay. Blood On The Tracks did not have a separate release in Uruguay, so promo and commercial copies would have been sourced from Argentina. The record labels are just pre-printed Discos CBS Argentina labels with a typed album title on Side 1 and blank on Side 2 of the first copy. There are also stickers on both sides and "CX 50" is again handwritten on Side 2 of the first copy. Sergio also believes that a Uruguayan test pressing of New Morning also comes from the archives of CX 50, see that album's page. The second test pressing has stamps with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]" on the rear sleeve and the record labels. The third test pressing owned by Lars M. Banke has this sticker on Side 1 only. This third copy has an unreadable handwritten matrix number on Side 1 only.
This release has a unique rear sleeve (for the US sleeves see above), with the first US design with text in black, but the maroon background colour changed to white. The Pete Hamill sleeve notes are translated into Spanish, as are the song titles and credits.
There are a number of translation mistakes, pointed out by Sergio Magnacca
and Manuel García Jara:
"Jack Of
Hearts" is mistranslated as "El Rey de Corazones" ["King of Hearts". In a
Spanish pack of playing cards the suit of Hearts is called "Corazones",
but the Jack or Knave is called "La Sota". The correct translation is
therefore "La Sota de Corazones".
The song credits on the rear sleeve are to "Boby Dylan"
The recording is credited to "Phil Ramona" (actually Phil Ramone).

"Letras", the Spanish release of "Lyrics 1962-2001" correctly translates the song title as "Lily, Rosemary y la Sota de Corazones". Tangled Up In Blue is translated as "Amarrado A Una Tristeza [Tied To A Sadness]", see the comments about the CBS Spain translation above. |

Both the sleeve and record were made in Argentina. The records have orange/yellow Discos CBS labels with song titles in English and Spanish. The records of both copies shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 33235, Side 2 - BL 33235 (same as the US catalogue number). Gerd has also found a demonstration copy on eBay with pre-printed Discos CBS label with typewritten text on Side 1 only and stickers also with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]" on both sides.

This rare release again has a unique
sleeve, both front and back. The front maroon panel on the left has the CBS logo,
“Stereo”, and the catalogue number are in white at top left, along with “BOB
DYLAN”, the album title and all ten song titles in underlined white
lettering. The picture of Bob on the right is the normal size. The rear sleeve uses the original US design with a white background instead of maroon and the sleeve notes translated into Portuguese. The record has orange 1960s-style CBS labels. The record labels say "STEREO/MONO" but all this means is that you could play the record on a mono turntable provided you fitted the cartridge with a stereo needle. There are two label variants as shown, the first has two songs listed above the centre hole, while the second has no songs listed above the centre hole and different text layout to the left and right of the centre hole. Lars M. Banke's variant 2 copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 137873 AL 33235, Side 2 - 137873 BL 33236. |

This album was released by CBS (Portugal) Musica e Discos, Lda. and the sleeve was printed in Portugal by Grafica Monumental. This is probably a later release as the record has red late 1980s CBS labels. I assume there was a first release with orange/yellow CBS labels - scans required. The red of the labels is different (paler red and matt) from the UK or NL releases (darker red and glossy). The copy of the record shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-69097-A, CXAL-33235-2D; Side 2 - 01-69097-B, CXBL-33235-2C.
