Blood On The Tracks
(1975)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Original US stereo 2LP set, Columbia C2 33682, 7 Jul 1975* (see below)

After the success of Blood On The Tracks, Bob authorised the belated release of tracks from the 1967 home recording sessions with The Band in the basement of Big Pink. The photographs on the outside and inside of the gatefold sleeve were taken by Reid Miles in the basement of the YMCA in Los Angeles, CA, in 1975. Apart from Bob, The Band and various actors depicting characters from the songs, the ensemble includes David Blue, although not Neil Young as some thought. I believed the newspaper seller was the legendary Jimmy Berman from New York, the subject of Allen Ginsberg's Jimmy Berman Rag (R-0158, see 1974), but Patrick Rofflaer says he is actually actor Angelo Rossitto, famous for his roles in films such as "Freaks" and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome".
BasementUKOutside.JPG (58499 bytes)

Also, Ringo Starr was thought to be in the pictures wearing a Royal Air Force uniform, but Rod MacBeath in his article "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves Part 3" in "The Telegraph" issue 52 (Summer 1995), says it is actually Richard Manuel. The man in Red Army uniform is Robbie Robertson.

Picture from "Isis" 161
Thanks to "Isis" 161 for the photos of the exotic jacket Bob is wearing on the outer and inner sleeve photos, which came up for auction by Guernsey-based PFC Auctions on Bob's 71st birthday, 24 May 2012. The jacket is made from a Chumash Native American blanket, a tribe that lived on the California coastline and on California's islands. The winning bid was £9,193 ($14.397/€11.492)!

*26 Jun 1975 has been previously accepted as the album's release date, but Dag Braathen has found a New York press release dated 25 Jun 1975, which says the album "is being released on 7 Jul 1975". Ian Woodward adds "The official booklet that was part of the promotion for Modern Times in 2006 shows the sleeve of every Dylan album, its track listing and release date, and gives 1 July 1975 as the date in question. The "New York Times" for Friday, 4 July 1975, said, "On Monday, a two-record set will 'ship' (that) "can already be called a classic". The word 'ship' is in inverted commas, so is a quote from someone or something. That would put the date as 7 July 1975 so the NYT probably took it from this press release. "Sounds" (5 July 1975) said it would "be released as a double album this Friday, July 4, by CBS worldwide" but there was a small snippet in the "New Musical Express" for 12 July 1975 saying that the UK release had been delayed "due to changes in the sleeve design". It had originally been intended for "last weekend, to coincide with the U.S. release"." Ian also adds that "Cash Box" for 5 Jul 1975 reported that Columbia Records would be releasing the set at the beginning of July and "Billboard" for 12 Jul 1975 (but published the week before) confirms the release date as 7 Jul 1975. I am therefore taking 7 Jul 1975 as the most likely release date.

New York press release, 25 Jun 1975

Record organisation:

The record sides for The Basement Tapes are ordered in a specific way: Record 1 has Sides 1 and 4, while Record 2 has Sides 2 and 3. This arrangement was common at this time to work with "multi-disc auto-changer" record players, where the records were placed one on top of the other on a spindle, and Record 2 dropped down automatically after Side 1 of Record 1 had finished. After Side 2 (Side 1 of Record 2) had finished, you just turned the two records over together to play Sides 3 and 4! This is the only two record Dylan set I have that has this arrangement, it was not used for the four earlier UK double albums (Blonde On Blonde, Self Portrait, More Greatest Hits and Before The Flood on Island Records), and for none afterwards. (Some worldwide Apple/CBS releases of The Concert For Bangladesh or Asylum releases of Before The Flood have this arrangement too.)
An auto-changer turntable playing a two record set - Side 1 is playing, when it finishes Side 2 will drop down and start playing automatically

Tracklist (24 tracks):

Side 1: Odds And Ends; Orange Juice Blues (The Band); Million Dollar Bash; Yazoo Street Scandal (The Band); Going To Acapulco; Katie's Been Gone (The Band).

Side 2: Lo! And Behold; Bessie Smith (The Band); Clothes Line Saga; Apple Suckling Tree; Please Mrs. Henry; Tears Of Rage.

Side 3: Too Much Of Nothing; Yea! Heavy And A Bottle Of Bread; Ain't No More Cane (The Band); Crash On The Levee (Down In The Flood); Ruben Remus (The Band); Tiny Montgomery.

Side 4: You Ain't Goin' Nowhere; Don't Ya Tell Henry (The Band); Nothing Was Delivered; Open The Door, Homer; Long Distance Operator (The Band); This Wheel's On Fire.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - promo and commercial stereo 2LP sets, Columbia C2 33682 (USA), 7 Jul 1975:

Columbia C2 33682 (USA), 1975 release:

Columbia C2 33682 (USA) - front scan by Steven Fant (promo copy with sticker and timing strip)

The white label promo 2LP sets shown have radio station timing strips on the front or back of their gatefold sleeves. Steven Fant's promo copy and one of Gerd Rundel's promo copies also have a front white sticker listing the tracks. All the promo copies shown have the outer top corners of the gatefold sleeve cut off. The records have Side 1 paired with Side 4 and Side 2 paired with Side 3 as my UK copy below (see auto-changer comments above). The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - P AL 33683-1A, Side 2 - P AL 33684-1A, Side 3 - P BL 33684-1A, Side 4 - P BL 33683-1A.

Phill Townsend's white label copy (not shown) has cut corners and a timing strip but no additional track listing sticker (and no residue to suggest there ever was one). The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 33683-1E (stamped) 2T (handwritten), Side 2 - P AL 33684-1B (stamped) 1T (handwritten), Side 3 - P BL 33684-1B (stamped) 1T (handwritten), Side 4 - P BL 33683-1B (stamped) 1T (handwritten).

Steven Fant points that the text on the spine of a sealed promo copy with the sticker with the “Bob Dylan & The Band” in an outline style text is: “C2 33682 Bob Dylan And The Band The Basement Tapes Columbia Stereo X998” (detailed scan above). On the spine of the sealed first issue with the different commercial release sticker is just: “C2 33682 Bob Dylan And The Band The Basement Tapes Columbia Stereo”. Manuel García Jara says the "X998" is a double album price code, but he doesn't know why it is on the spine of some copies, but not on others.

Columbia C2 33682 (USA) - detail of rear with Military Sale stamp, scan by Lars M. Banke

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the US 2LP commercial release with the same record labels as shown with a gold stamp "FOR MILITARY SALE ONLY" on the rear sleeve. This would have been for sale at US military PX stores worldwide, without sales tax.

Columbia C2 33682 (USA), late 1980s release:

Columbia C2 33682 (USA) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1980s release)

The late 1980s release of the set comes in the same gatefold sleeve as the 1975 release. The “X998” code on the spine of the copy shown is obscured. The records have Side 1 paired with Side 4 and Side 2 paired with Side 3. The Side 1 (Record 1, Side 1) and Side 2 (Record 2, Side 1) record labels have an inverted triangle to the left of the centre hole, first introduced in the USA with Biograph in 1985. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 33683-2A (stamped), Side 2 - <B-AD> AL 33684 G1C (handwritten), Side 3 - (HXAD) BL-33684 G1A (handwritten), Side 4 - <BXMP> BL 33683 G2A (handwritten).

Gerd Rundel has a test pressing where the records have plain white sleeves with the date of 15 Nov 2011 and the catalogue numbers. They have white RTI (Record Technology Incorporated) labels on Sides 1 and 3, also dated 15 Nov 2011. Side 2 and 4 have plain white labels without text. The matrix numbers are the same as those of Sergio's commercial copy.

Fred Muller has found a Mobile Fidelity boxed set of six albums by The Band including The Basement Tapes. It also includes Rock Of Ages, the 1972 live double album by The Band, but this is a remastered version of the original album not including Bob. For the reissued set including Bob guesting on four tracks, see 2001.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - stereo 2LP sets, Columbia C2 33682 (USA for export), 1975:

Columbia C2 33682 (USA for export) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (second copy)

Tim Norford has a copy of the US release bought in Switzerland with a "CBS" sticker on the rear sleeve and three shaped white stickers covering the ring of Columbia logos on the record labels. The stamped matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - P AL 33683-1F, Side 2 - P AL 33684-1C, Side 3 - P BL 33684-1F, Side 4 - P BL 33683-1D.

Gerd Rundel has a “USA for export” label variant with three shaped purple "CBS" stickers covering the ring of Columbia logos on the labels. The Side 3 stickers have been removed and the label shows clearly the Columbia logos and “PRINTED IN USA”. As expected, Side 1 is paired with Side 4 and Side 2 is paired with Side 3. The front of the gatefold sleeve has a black track listing sticker with white text like the Dutch and Greek albums shown below. The rear of the gatefold sleeve has a "CBS" sticker at top left, the same as Tim Norford's copy. The Columbia information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is not obscured. The records have the same stamped matrix numbers as Tim's copy.

Columbia C2T 33682 (USA), 1970s:

Columbia C2T 33682 (USA) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (1970s release)
The 1970s single cassette release has catalogue number "C2T 33682" on the insert and the cassette. The insert has no barcode. The inside of the insert is blank. The cassette is grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. It has "MADE IN U.S.A." on Side 2.

Columbia GT 33682 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1980s release)

The two mid-1980s single cassette releases shown are unusual in that they have three different catalogue numbers: "CGT 33682" on the insert, "GT 33682" on Side 1 and "C2T 33682" on Side 2! The insert now has a barcode. The inside of the insert is blank. The first cassette is again grey with black text printed directly on to it. It now has a different text layout on Side 1 including the upside-down triangle symbol introduced with Biograph in 1985. Side 2 is exactly the same as Side 2 of the 1970s release, even the catalogue number. I assume copies exist with the "correct" Side 2. Manuel García Jara's mid-1980s copy has exactly the same insert and layout of cassette sides, but this time the cassette is white, not grey.

The late 1980s release insert still has catalogue number “CGT 33682” while the cassette now has “GT 33682” on both sides - apart from colour, Side 1 is the same as the previous Side 1. The insert again has a barcode. The inside of the insert is again blank. The cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text, there are again no paper labels.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - stereo cassette release, Columbia C2T 33682 (USA for export?), 31 Jul 1975:

Columbia C2T 33682 (USA for export?) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel

Columbia C2T 33682 (USA for export?) - inside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel

Columbia C2T 33682 (USA for export?) - cassette Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel

Columbia C2T 33682 (USA for export?) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel

This mysterious cassette could be a "USA for export" release. Gerd Rundel suggests it may have been intended for sale in South Africa. It has a folded insert that was printed in the USA with details of other Columbia US cassette releases on the flap and the inside of the insert. There is an "X998" code on the outside of the insert above the Columbia logo. The cassette has the US catalogue number "C2T 33682" with no country of origin. It has CBS logos and the European-style date of "31-7-75" on both labels. The cassette is light grey with blue paper labels and black text.

Columbia C2X 33682 (Canada) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (first release)
Both the gatefold sleeve and the records of this stereo 2LP set were made in Canada. Like the US set above, the sides are in auto-changer sequence: Record 1 has Sides 1 and 4, while Record 2 has Sides 2 and 3.

This 1980s Canada single cassette release has an insert with text in English and French on the outside and inside. There is a barcode on the outside of the insert so this is probably not the first Canadian cassette release. The chrome cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text, there are no paper labels.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - stereo 2LP set, CBS 88147 (UK), 11 Jul 1975, re-released later in 1975 (twice) and late 1970s:
Amazingly, the first copies on sale in the UK came from three sources, the UK itself, Spain and Holland!

CBS 88147 (UK), 11 Jul 1975 (first release):

CBS 88147 (UK) - front with sticker, scan by David Burgess
This was the first UK Dylan album to have the orange/yellow 1970s style CBS labels on first release, and the records are ordered as described above: Record 1 has Sides 1 and 4, while Record 2 has Sides 2 and 3. David Burgess' copy of this album has a brown sticker with white text in the top right hand corner of the front sleeve.

Manuel García Jara has a copy where the records have the earlier style of plain orange CBS labels. This is extremely rare, only a small number of copies can have been made before the label style was changed. My copy below was bought on the day of release, and that has orange/yellow labels! His gatefold sleeve has the same sticker as David Burgess' copy, but was printed in England while mine was printed in Holland (see the Dutch releases below). Because of the label style I have designated this as the first release.

CBS 88147 (UK/NL), Jul 1975 (second release):

CBS 88147 (UK) - front of gatefold sleeve (second release, my copy - CBS logo on front)
As stated, this copy was bought in England on the first day of release. However, the gatefold sleeve of my copy was printed by Shorewood Packaging in Holland and has the CBS logo on the front at top left (the other UK sleeves shown here have the CBS logo on the rear at top right). "2xC" is printed in a lozenge on the rear at top right. The sleeve used for the Dutch 1975 and late 1980s releases shown below is exactly the same! The inside of the gatefold sleeve has "88147" at top right of the left hand side.

Sergio Mariano Romay has found a copy on eBay with the same orange/yellow record labels as mine. The gatefold sleeve was also printed in Holland. The front sleeve has a brown front sticker as above. There is also a poster, which I have not heard of being present with any other UK copy.

My UK records with orange/yellow CBS labels have two serial numbers: CBS S 88147 on the left, and S 80917/S 80918 on the right above the US serial number C2 33682. The matrix numbers are: Record 1, Side 1 - CBS-S-88147-A1  80917-A1 (Side 1), Record 1, Side 2 - CBS-S-88147-B1  80917-B1 (Side 4), Record 2, Side 1 - CBS-S-88147-C1  80918-A1 (Side 2), Record 2, Side 2 - CBS-S-88147-D1  80918-B1 (Side 3).

CBS S 88147 (Spain for UK), 1975:

CBS S 88147 (Spain for UK) - front with brown sticker, scan by Manuel García Jara (first release, both copies)

This release also exists in a remarkable variant made in Spain for the UK. I received scans from Gerd Rundel and Manuel García Jara at the same time, but Gerd is happy that Manuel's scans are used here. The sleeve was made in England and has rear text "Interpak II by Shorewood Packaging Co Ltd England" as the first release above. The records have plain orange CBS labels with "MADE IN SPAIN". Manuel García Jara has two copies, both of which were bought new in Manchester in Aug 1975. The sleeves are identical and have brown front stickers. Manuel's first copy has plain orange CBS labels with "MADE IN SPAIN" on each (identical to Gerd's copy), but Manuel's second copy has "MADE IN ENGLAND" on Side 1 and "MADE IN SPAIN" on Sides 2, 3 and 4! The "MADE IN ENGLAND" side is identical to the UK plain orange Side 1 label above. Lars M. Banke also has a copy of the same set with the UK sleeve and the "MADE IN SPAIN" labels. It too has a brown front sticker.

CBS S 88147 (Spain for UK) - detail of Side 1, scan by Manuel García Jara (first release, second copy "MADE IN ENGLAND")

The records of all three copies have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147-A, Side 2 - 88147-B, Side 3 - 88147-C, Side 4 - 88147-D. For a third release copy made in Spain for the UK market, see below.

Roger Billings has a copy of the first variant with all sides stated as "MADE IN SPAIN", where the sleeve has the "THE HISTORIC BASEMENT TAPES" front sticker and was printed in England by Shorewood. Record 1 contains Side 1 and Side 2 and has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147-A, Side 2 - 88147-C (crossed out) B. Record 2 contains Side 3 and Side 4 and has matrix numbers: Side 3 - 88147-D (crossed out) C, Side 4 - 88147-B (crossed out) D. Each matrix number is followed by a tiny circle containing the letter "A".

CBS 88147 (UK), 1975-76 (third release):

CBS 88147 (UK) - front of gatefold sleeve, scan by Gerd Rundel (third release - no CBS logo)
The gatefold sleeve of this copy from Gerd Rundel was printed in England like Manuel's and has the CBS logo on the rear of the sleeve at top right, not like mine where the CBS logo is on the front at top left.  The record labels are the same as mine except that they have the text "RECORD 1/2 OF A 2 RECORD SET" missing. The record matrix numbers are again the same as mine. It's possible both copies were circulating simultaneously.

This third release also exists in a variation made in Spain for the UK  market, the copy shown was bought new in Leeds in Jan 1976. The sleeve was made in England and has rear text "Interpak II by Shorewood Packaging Co Ltd England" as above. It did not have a front sticker. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is identical to the first release Spain for UK copy shown above. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels with "MADE IN SPAIN". Manuel's records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147-A, Side 2 - 88147-IV, Side 3 - 88147-C IV, Side 4 - 88147-D IV. The label design is different from both the UK orange/yellow copies above and the orange/yellow Spanish labels below.

CBS S 88147 (Spain for UK) - Side 4 scan by Gerd Rundel (third release variant 2)

Gerd Rundel has another Spanish made third release copy in the same gatefold sleeve. Side 2 of Gerd's copy looks the same as Manuel's Side 2, but Sides 1, 3 and 4 have different pressing rings on the labels.

For first release copies made in Spain for the UK market, see above.

CBS (S) 88147 (UK), late 1970s (fourth release, two variants):

CBS S 88147/CBS S 80917 (UK) - Side 1 (Side 1 of record 1), scan by Gerd Rundel (fourth release - variant 1)

Both Graham Sullivan and Gerd Rundel have what must be a fourth release copy of this album. The sleeve is the same as for the third release copy above. It is also an "Interpak II by Shorewood Packaging Co Ltd England" like Manuel García Jara's first release copy with plain orange labels and Gerd Rundel's third release copy above. The inside layout is the same as my copy. This copy has orange/yellow CBS record labels with a different text layout than mine. The record labels have the "LC|0149" capsule which means they date from the late 1970s, also they still have "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom of the labels, later moved to the circumference text. Again Side 1 is paired with Side 4 on Record 1 and Side 2 is paired with Side 3 on Record 2. Gerd's copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-80917-A2 (handwritten), 88147-A2 (handwritten), Side 2 - CBS-S-88147-C1 (stamped), 80918-A1 (stamped), Side 3 - CBS-S-80918-B2 (handwritten), 88147-D (handwritten), Side 4 - 80917-B1 (stamped), CBS-S-88147-B1 (stamped).

Gerd also has a fourth release label variant, again with "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom. The gatefold sleeve is the same as for the listed 1975-76 copy above. The record labels are missing the "S" in the catalogue numbers to the right of the centre hole and also in front of "88147" above "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole. Side 1 is again paired with Side 4 and Side 2 paired with Side 3.

CBS 88147 (UK), late 1970s (fifth release):

CBS
S 88147/CBS S 80917 (UK) - Side 1 (Side 1 of record 1), scan by Gerd Rundel (fifth release)

This release has the same sleeve as listed for the third and fourth releases above. Again Side 1 paired is with Side 4 and Side 2 paired with Side 3. The record labels have the "LC|0149" capsule at high top right and no bottom text. "MADE IN ENGLAND" is now in the circumference text to the right of the centre hole. The record matrix numbers are the same as for the fourth late 1970s release above.

CBS S 88147/CBS S 80917 (UK) - Side 1 (Side 1 of record 1), scan by Gerd Rundel (sixth release)

This is a very late 1970s copy. The gatefold sleeve is again the same as for the listed 1975-1976 copy and the first late 1970s copy above but the orange/yellow CBS record labels have a different text layout from the labels of the first late 1970s copy:

  • no arrows below "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole

  • the "LC|0149" capsule is below speed "33⅓ RPM" to the right of the centre hole

  • there is no space above “(P) 1975 CBS Inc.” to the right of the centre hole

  • CBS copyright info is now printed at the bottom of the labels and "MADE IN ENGLAND" has been moved to the circumference text on the right

Side 1 is again paired with Side 4 and Side 2 paired with Side 3. The matrix numbers are the same as for the fourth release late 1970s copy listed above. I assume there is a very early 1980s release with orange/yellow CBS labels like this but with the CBS copyright info in the circumference.

This single "Double Play" 8-track stereo tape cartridge release has a black case with a white wraparound label. It comes in a black slipcase that is almost identical to the cartridge.

The single cartridge has a revised track order to make the four "programs" of approximately equal length, different from the US 8-track programs above.

The insert for both releases is a single folded card with track details and credits on the inside. The 1970s release is on white card, the 1980s release on coloured card with a complex printed pattern on the rear flap of the outside insert to deter counterfeiters. The only change on the inside is that Bessie Smith on Side 2 is copyrighted to Big Ben Music in 1975 and Island Music in the 1980s.

CBS 88147 (NL) - spine of gatefold sleeve, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay

These albums have an identical gatefold sleeve to the UK first pressing printed in Holland, exactly the same as my UK copy (see above). Patrick Helfrich sent scans of his 1980s copy with details from the sleeve, but they are again identical. The record sides are also ordered like the UK pressing. The 1975 records have orange/yellow CBS labels similar to the UK ones above. The records of Patrick Helfrich's 1975 copy have matrix numbers (all handwritten): Side 1 - 88147 - A II, Side 2 - 88147 - B II, Side 3 - 88147 - C II, Side 4 - 88147 - D II.

Lars M. Banke has found a copy with a circular gold "DYLAN" sticker on the front and rear sleeves. There is also a record store sticker from Antwerp in Belgium on the rear sleeve. Manuel García Jara has a copy of the 1975 Dutch release sold in France with a red French front sticker. Gerd Rundel has a copy of the 1975 Dutch release with a gold German front sticker with text
"CBS STAR SERIE 2LPs Empfohlener Verkaufspreis DM 25,- [CBS STAR SERIES 2LPs Recommended Sales Price DM 25,-]".

The front of Sergio Mariano Romay's copy has a big sticker black with white letters, the same as the one on the US export copy above, and as printed on the Greek copy below. The matrix numbers (all handwritten) are: Side 1 - 88147-A IV, Side 2 - 88147-B, Side 3 - 88147-C, Side 4 - 88147-D II. All four sides also have “H” inside a circle, handwritten too.

The 1980s records have red 1980s style CBS labels without the star next to the side numbers. The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - 88147 - A IV (handwritten), Side 2 - 01 88147 20 4B1 (stamped), Side 3 - 01 88147 20 2C1 (stamped), Side 4 - 01 88147 20 4D1 (stamped).

CBS 466137 1 (NL), late 1980s:

CBS 466137 1 (NL) - front scan by Lars M. Banke
This late 1980s CBS release has a new catalogue number, CBS 466137 1. The records now have red CBS labels. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1  88147 A II, Side 2 - 88147 B, Side 3 - 88147 C, Side 4 - 88147 D II.

The records have red Columbia labels and this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147 A IV (handwritten), Side 2 - 01-88147 20 AB 1 (stamped), Side 3 - 88147 C (handwritten), Side 4 - 88147 D III (handwritten).

Columbia 466137 4 (NL) - outside of cassette 1 insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (both releases)
This two cassette sets must be the last Dutch releases of this album because they were made by Columbia, not by CBS. The first insert of both releases has no track titles on the outside but the second insert has the titles of all four sides on the outside. The two cassettes are separate with the track list on the inside of each.

The set includes a separate folded insert with liner notes by Greil Marcus in the same typeface as on the inside of the gatefold sleeve of the vinyl release. The same text is printed on one side only on the first release insert, but on both sides on the second release insert. Paul Shenton reports that the track listing at top left on the insert relates to the LP sides, not the cassette sides, which are slightly rearranged to make the sides of more equal length. The first release cassettes are black with red Columbia paper labels. The second release cassettes are clear plastic with the same red Columbia paper labels.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Paul Shention for information and pictures.

Both sets shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - SCI-80917-1L   21/7/75, Side 2: SCI-80917-2L   21/7/75, Side 3: SCI-80918-3L   21/7/75, Side 4: SCI-80918-4L   21/7/75, including the mastering date "21/7/75" (21 Jul 1975). The 1975 labels have "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR" at the bottom. The late 1970s labels just have "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" but the text is aligned as if "SUGAR" should still be present. This set can be dated as after 1976 because the original Desire labels in 1976 had "CBS SUGAR" but the original Street-Legal labels from 1978 had "CBS" only.

Manuel García Jara is proud to provide this very rare Spanish release with orange record labels and promo insert. It disproves assertions on some web-sites that the last Dylan album with orange labels published in Spain was Blood On The Tracks. Apart from the mono release of John Wesley Harding by Discophon, this edition with orange labels and promo insert could be the rarest Dylan album released in Spain! Although this album is not a promotional release as such (it has no promo stamp, sticker or white labels), it was made to send to radio stations and music journalists (similar to Blood on the Tracks with orange labels and insert) .The commercial album below was released simultaneously with orange/yellow labels. The front sleeve has the CBS logo on top left corner. The rear also has a CBS logo. The inner gatefold has the Spanish translation of the text by Greil Marcus, titles in English and credits in Spanish. It also has a printer credit of Offset ALG, Madrid. Although the rear of the gatefold sleeve has Spanish text, text in English below it has been obscured, including "Printed in Holland"!

The most interesting part of this album is the insert printed on pale yellow paper: eight pages written by the Spanish rock journalist Jesús Ordovás, who wrote the first Dylan biography in Spanish. This insert reproduces an article published in the Spanish rock magazine "Disco Express" on 12 Sep 1975. The front of the insert is illustrated with images of the sleeve and it has the title "BIOGRAFÍAS DE DISCOS CBS: BOB DYLAN "THE BASEMENT TAPES". The insert is reproduced in full here.

The album is made to be played on an automatic record changer, so Side 1 is paired with Side 4, and Side 2 with Side 3 as the UK and Dutch releases above.  The records shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147A, Side 2 - 88147C, Side 3 - 88147D, Side 4 - 88147B.

This rare second edition was released in 1975, after the promotional release with the 8-page insert and before the more common edition with orange/yellow labels. The outer sleeve has the usual round sticker of all double albums released by CBS in Spain in 1975 with "Album 2 Discos - Precio Especial" [Double Album - Special Price]". The value of this album is much greater if it still has all its original elements:

The inner gatefold sleeve is identical to the previous release. While the first release had Sides 1 & 4 on Record 1 and Sides 2 & 3 on Record 2, this release has Sides 1 & 2 on Record 1 and Sides 3 & 4 on Record 2. The record labels are plain orange with a different design from that of the first release: "BOB DYLAN & THE BAND" is on two lines, and other details are also different. Despite the belief of some Spanish commentators that this album never was released with orange labels, there are actually two different Spanish editions with orange labels!

The third release of the album came into record stores in Oct 1975. It entered the Spanish album charts on 13 Oct 1975 and reached the #12 position on 19 Jan 1976, remaining in the charts for 22 weeks. It has the same gatefold sleeve except for the round sticker on rear with the text "Album 2 Discos - Precio Especial" [Double Album - Special Price]". Only the rear of the gatefold sleeve is shown, the rest is identical. This version does not have the promotional insert. The record labels are orange/yellow. Record #1 has Sides 1 and 2; Record #2, Sides 3 and 4. There is a misprinted song title on Side 4: "This Whell's On Fire".  The records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147A, Side 2 - 88147 IV B, Side 3 - 88147 IV C, Side 4 - 88147 IV D.

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the third release with the same gatefold sleeve as before, but without the "Album 2 Discos/Precio Especial" sticker. I am calling this third release variant 2.

The orange/yellow CBS labels, however, have several differences from Manuel's third release varaint 1 copy above:

Lars M. Banke has a second copy of the third release with the same gatefold sleeve as before, this time with the "Album 2 Discos/Precio Especial" sticker (very discoloured by glue). The orange/yellow CBS labels, however, are different again! "BOB DYLAN & THE BAND" is again on two lines, but now centred. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147 A, Side 2 - 88147 IV B, Side 3 - 88147 C IV, Side 4 - 88147 IV D.

CBS S 88147 (Spain) - rear of gatefold sleeve, scan by Lars M. Banke (copy with third release variant 4 records)
Gerd Rundel has a fourth variant of the third release (variant 4A). On the record labels "33" is printed in a different position than on the other variants, immediately to the left of the centre hole on the same line as "ESTEREO" and the arrows. On Side 1 "& THE BAND" is offset to the right, but it is centred on the other three labels. On Side 4 This Wheel's On Fire is spelled correctly.

Lars M. Banke has a copy which I have called variant 4B. The records are like the 4A variant except that this copy has "& THE BAND" offset to the right on all four sides (Side 1 is therefore the same as variant 4A). There are lyrics on the inner sleeves. The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147 A + 1 (stamped), Side 2 0 88147 B (handwritten), Side 3  - 88147 B 0 (stamped), Side 4 - 88147 D (handwritten).

CBS S 88147 (Spain), mid-1980s - fourth release (red labels):

CBS S 88147 (Spain) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (fourth release)
This fourth release copy from the mid-1980s comes in the same same gatefold sleeve as before, but without the "Album 2 Discos/Precio Especial" sticker. The records were now made by Tecnodisco S. A., Madrid, for Discos CBS and have red CBS labels with the same catalogue number as before. "BASEMENT" is misspelled "BASAMENT" on Side 4 only. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147 A0, Side 2 - 88147 B^, Side 3 - 88147 C0, Side 4 - 88147 D0.

CBS 466137 1 (Spain), late 1980s:

CBS 466137 1 (Spain) - front scan by Lars M. Banke

This fifth Spanish release from the late 1980s has a new catalogue number and the records have red CBS labels like those of the fourth release. It also comes in a wide single sleeve that holds both LPs, and no longer has a gatefold sleeve. The address of Discos CBS on the rear of the sleeve is now Castellanos 93, 28046 Madrid, but you can again see that the earlier information has been erased and overprinted. There is a printed white rectangle on the rear sleeve at top left with the new catalogue number and a barcode.

The records of this copy were again made by Tecnodisco S.A., Madrid, for Discos CBS and have new handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 466137 1 A, Side 2 - 466137 1 B, Side 3 - 466137 1 C, Side 4 - 466137 1 D. "BASEMENT" on Side 4 is now correct.

This sixth Spanish release from the 1990s is now on the CBS/Sony label, because RCA still retained the rights to the Columbia name in Spain in the 1990s. The set again comes in a wide single sleeve that holds both LPs, and no longer has a gatefold sleeve. The front sleeve has a "Nice Price" sticker from Sony Music. The rear sleeve looks the same as that of Lars' late 1980s copy above. The records have red CBS/Sony labels.

This is the original cassette release from 1975 with the first Discos CBS address in Spain, Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13, printed on the inside, and with the first Spanish cassette design (insert with two panels, orange CBS paper labels) - this design was used until the late 1970s. As usual in Spain, double albums were released on two separate cassettes but they were not sold separately. Tape #1 of this nice set has the front of the vinyl gatefold sleeve, while tape #2 has the rear of the gatefold sleeve. The inside of both inserts are the same. The Side 4 paper label of this copy is distinctly skewed!

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - stereo 2LP set, CBS 88147 (Greece), late 1970s/early 1980s:

CBS 88147 (Greece) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

This 2LP set with gatefold sleeve was made in Greece in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The outside of the gatefold sleeve has the CBS logo on front and a big brown panel (part of the graphics, not a sticker) with the tracklist. The front also has Greek text in a circle (translation is "Special Price", not "Nice Price", "2 Records") It seems like a sticker but it is again part of the graphics. The rear of the outer gatefold sleeve has another CBS logo and a sticker of a record shop of Athens. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is brown monochrome with catalogue number "88147" above and the text "Produced in Greece for CBS Records of Greece S.A." at bottom. The record labels are orange/yellow and they are almost identical to the Dutch labels, even having the logo of the Dutch copyright organisation "BIEM". There are two record label variants, the second has small Greek text ("DESIGNED IN GREECE") as the last line of text to the left of the centre hole, on the first variant this is missing.

The records of Manuel García Jara's copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147-A R, Side 2 - 88147-C ("C" is crossed out) B R  (H) ("H" in a circle), Side 3 - 88147-D ("D" is crossed out) C III R (H) ("H" in a circle), Side 4 - 88147-B ("B" is crossed out) D II R (H) ("H" in a circle).

The records of Gerd Rundel's second variant copy have slightly different labels with added Greek text to the left of the centre hole. Sides 2, 3 and 4 are mislabelled, but the records play correctly. They have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147-A R (not sure if R), Side 2 - 88147-C (crossed out) B R (not sure if R), (H) “H” in a circle, Side 3 - 88147-C, Side 4 - 88147-B (crossed out) IID R (not sure if R), (H) “H” in a circle.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - stereo 2LP set, CBS 88147 (Israel), 1975:

CBS 88147 (Israel) - front with sticker, scan by Manuel García Jara
This is the very rare Israeli release of this album - this is not only the first release but the only release of this double album in Israel. It has a very noticeable sleeve and must be the only worldwide first release of a Dylan double album with a single, not a gatefold sleeve. In other countries, like in Spain, some double albums were reissued in the late 1980s with a single sleeve, but never on first release. This single sleeve is so narrow that it's better to keep the records outside the sleeve to avoid damage.

CBS 88147 (Israel) - Side 4 scan by Simon Blokker (printed more centrally)

There is no printer information but, for some reason, CBS sleeves made in Israel in the period 1973-75 have a lower quality than others made before or after: they are not laminated and made of fragile cardboard. It has "Bob Dylan & The Band" printed (not a sticker) on the front in unique blue slanted lettering; there is also a sticker with the text "SPECIALLY PRICED 2-RECORD SET": this album must have been sold at a special price because it did not have a gatefold sleeve. The rear sleeve is also unique: it is white with the tracklist, credits and the notes by Greil Marcus from the inner gatefold sleeve of other releases. The record sides are arranged regularly: Record #1 has Sides 1 and 2 and Record #2 has Sides 3 and 4, but the matrix numbers belong to a set with the usual arrangement at this time: Record #1 (Sides 1 and 4) and Record #2 (Sides 2 and 3). The records have plain orange CBS labels and the labels of Record #1 are correctly printed, but the labels of Record #2 of Manuel's copy are printed badly off-centre. The records of both copies shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 33683-1G, Side 2 - PAL 33684-1G, Side 3 - PBL 33684-1F, Side 4 - PBL 33683-1G.

The gatefold sleeve of both releases is similar to the UK release except for the catalogue number and publishing details (see below). The publishing details on the rear of the 1975 gatefold sleeve look as if they are on a sticker. The 1975 release has a six-page folded insert which includes the lyrics in English and Japanese plus the liner notes by Greil Marcus translated into Japanese.

The arrangement of the tracks on the records is the same as the UK pressing.

The records of the first release copy shown have matrix numbers: Record 1, Side A - SOPJ-120A1 (Side 1), Record 1, Side B - SOPJ-120B1 (Side 4), Record 2, Side A - SOPJ-121A2 (Side 2), Record 2, Side B - SOPJ-121B2 (Side 3).

The 1978 release has a eight-page folded insert. Both the 1975 and 1978 inserts have pale text that I have darkened to make it more readable.

Early Australian release labels (as shown) had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian Dylan records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

The second release also has a laminated sleeve. The record labels now have orange/yellow CBS labels (Desire in 1976 was the first Australian Dylan album to have these labels on initial release) with the shorter copyright text. The album title and artists name are again on one line, and matrix numbers "MX176015" - "MX176018" are again printed just above "THE BAND". The sides are arranged as for the first release, with Sides 1 and 4 on CBS SBP 234709 and Sides 2 and 3 on CBS SBP 234710. Geoffrey Lambourn has a copy with first release labels on Record 1 and second release labels on Record 2.

The copy of the third release shown has a blue sticker on the front of the gatefold sleeve with white text "2 RECORD SET SPECIAL LOW PRICE". The gatefold sleeve is again laminated. The record sides are now arranged conventionally with Sides 1 and 2 on Record 1 (CBS 234709) and Sides 3 and 4 on Record 2 (CBS 234710)! The record labels of the third release shown have different orange/yellow CBS labels, still with the shorter copyright text. The album title and artists name are now on two lines, on Side 1 "MX 176015" is now printed just below "(P) 1975" to the right of the centre hole and "STEREO" is much more visible to the left of the centre hole.

Geoff Bale has a copy of The Basement Tapes which he bought second-hand in Canberra sometime between 1983-85. This copy has orange/yellow CBS labels with the title and artist name appearing on two lines - similar to the third release but with the longer copyright text which is longer than the text which appears on first, second, and third release labels. This time the isn’t laminated. This can be called the “fourth release”.

One point of interest is that the fourth release disc sides are back ordered for use with an auto-changer record player, i.e. for the first disc, the first side is Side 1 while the second side is Side 4. For the second disc, the first side is Side 2 while the second side is Side 3. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers as follows: Record 1, Side 1 (Side 1): A MX176015 SBP234709-1; Record 1, Side 2 (Side 4): A MX176016 SBP234709-4; Record 2, Side 1 (Side 2): A MX176017 SBP234710-2; Record 2, Side 2  (Side 3): A MX176018 SBP234710-3.

This order of disc sides - for use with an auto-changer record player - is the same as for a different Australian pressing of The Basement Tapes which Geoff recently inherited from a deceased friend. It seems this pressing is a hybrid first and second release copy - similar to the one that Geoffrey Lambourn reported, except that in this it is Record 1 which has second release orange/yellow CBS labels, and Record 2 which has first release orange CBS labels. The information in the run-out groove for each side is the same as for the “fourth release” copy. The hybrid first and second release copy has a laminated sleeve.

The order of the disc sides on Geoff's “fourth release” copy (with unlaminated sleeve) seems a little surprising, as the third release has orange/yellow CBS labels with the shorter copyright text (so is earlier than Geoff's copy) and yet the record sides on the third release are arranged conventionally. It seems weird that in this respect the fourth release copy is the same as the first and second releases (with disc sides arranged for an auto-changer record player), but different from the third release (with disc sides in the conventional order). CBS Australia must have decided that the double album would sell better with auto-change sides and switched back.

The music publisher on the fourth release variant 1 labels is still "Albert", but there are later releases where the publishers are "Chappell" or "Warner Bros". The records with the "Chappell" credits are listed as the fifth release and the records with the "Warner Bros." credits as the sixth release. The records of all these copies shown have the same stamped matrix numbers: Record 1, Side 1 (Side 1): A MX176015 SBP234709-1; Record 1, Side 2 (Side 4): A MX176016 SBP234709-4; Record 2, Side 1 (Side 2): A MX176017 SBP234710-2; Record 2, Side 2 (Side 3): A MX176018 SBP234710-3. All these releases have auto-change sides.

CBS S2BP 220171 (CBS SBP 234709) (Australia) - detail of Side 1, photo by Geoff Bale (Record 1, Side 1) (fourth release - "MX 176015" higher, scans of second and third release Side 1s above, all have "MX 176015")
The "MX" matrix numbers to the right of the centre hole of the record labels are confusingly as follows: Side 1 - always "MX 176015"; Side 2 - "MX 176017" (auto-change) or "MX 176016" (not auto-change); Side 3 - always "MX 176018"; Side 4 - "MX 176016" (auto-change) or "MX 176017" (not auto-change). On the second release labels the "MX" numbers are significantly lower on each of the sides.

The insert for the third release is a shorter card, with the "Anytime Sound" listing on the inside, showing different albums. The cassette is still light grey, but this time it has blue text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tapes" - stereo 2LP set, CBS ASF-T 1850/1 (South Africa), 1975:

CBS ASF-T 1850/1 (South Africa) - front scan by Manuel García Jara

Like all previous South African albums with orange labels, this rare 2LP set with gatefold sleeve was made by CBS itself and distributed by Gramophone Record Co. (Pty.) Ltd., part of EMI. (Only the reissues and new albums with orange/yellow labels were made by Gramophone Record Co.) The outside of the gatefold sleeve is laminated with the album details and tracklist printed on the front, not a sticker. The rear has the CBS and Interpak logos. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is standard. The records come in printed CBS inner sleeves, also made by Interpak, the same for both records, with details of contemporary albums released in South Africa including Blood On The Tracks.

The records have plain orange CBS labels, both numbered "ASF-T.1850/1". The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1- ASFT 1850 - AL 33683, Side 2 - ASFT 1850 - BL 33683, Side 3 - ASFT 1851 - AL 33684, Side 4 - ASFT 1851 - BL 33684

CBS ASF-T 1850/1 (Rhodesia) - front scan by Lars M. Banke
This rare 2LP set was distributed in Rhodesia by Gramophone Record Co. (Pty.) Ltd., part of EMI. Unlike the South African release it did not come in a gatefold sleeve, but a poor quality wide single sleeve. Lars M. Banke's copy has a sticker on the rear sleeve at bottom right with code "4-A", indicating Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. Sides 2 and 4 of the records have what looks like a price sticker.

Frank Fritsching has a promo copy with a handwritten tracklist on the rear sleeve. This copy does not have a "4-A" sticker on the rear sleeve at bottom right , but it also does not have the Interpak logo in that position that would indicate it was from South Africa. Sides 1 and 3 of the records have promo stamps with text "SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE". Sides 1 to 4 also have large handwritten numbers.

CBS/Suzy Records 88147 (Yugoslavia) - Side 4 scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1976 release - Record 2, Side 1)

Although the first release records are labelled Side 1 and Side 2 on Record 1, and Side 3 and Side 4 on Record 2 in the tracklist order as stated on the inner gatefold, Record 1 actually plays Sides 1 and 4, and Record 2 plays sides 2 and 3, ordered for an auto-change record player (the side numbers have been corrected by pen). The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ULS 198-1 ZP 19376, Side 2 - ULS 198-2 ZP 19376, Side 3 - ULS 199-1 ZP 19376, Side 4 - ULS 199-2 ZP 24376.

The second release shown must also have been released in 1976: Record 1 still has "SAKOJ" on the labels but Record 2 has "SOKOJ" ("SAKOJ" became "SOKOJ" during 1976). The sleeve is identical to the first album shown. This album plays the tracklist as stated on the labels, Sides 1-4. The records again have orange/yellow CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ULS 198-1, Side 2 - ULS 198-2, Side 3 - ULS 199-1, Side 4 - ULS 199-2. The record sides are labelled "SIDE 1", "SIDE 2" (the "SAKOJ" labels) and "Side 3" and "Side 4" (the "SOKOJ" labels).

CBS/Suzy Records 88147 (Yugoslavia), 1982:

CBS/Suzy Records 88147 (Yugoslavia) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (1982 release)

This third release from 1982 has the same gatefold sleeve as before but the records now have "SOKOJ" on all labels. The records of Manuel's copy are now correctly labelled: Sides 1 and 2 on Record 1, and Sides 3 and 4 on Record 2, but surprisingly Record 1 plays Sides 1 and 3, while Record 2 plays Sides 4 and 2 (see matrix numbers)! The record labels are different from both 1976 releases with some mistakes: Side 1 track 1 - Odds And Ends is credited to E. Dylan; track 5 - Goin'To Acapulco; Side 2 track 1 - Lo And Berold!; track 5 - Please, Mts. Henry; track 6 - Tears Of Rage credited to S. Dylan! The records of Manuel's copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147-A1-S1, Side 2 - 88147-C1-S1 (Side 3's matrix number), Side 3 - 88147-D1-S1 (Side 4's matrix number), Side 4 - 88147-B1-S1 (Side 2's matrix number).

CBS/Suzy Records 88147 (Yugoslavia) - Side 3 scan by Manuel García Jara (1982 release - Record 2, Side 1, but actually plays Side 4!)

CBS/Suzy Records 88147 (Yugoslavia) - Side 4 scan by Manuel García Jara (1982 release - Record 2, Side 2, but actually plays Side 2!)

Lars M. Banke has another copy with the same sleeve and record labels (with the same mistakes) where the record sides are equally confusing - Record 1 has the labels for Sides 1 and 4, but plays Sides 1 and 2, while Record 2 has the labels for Sides 2 and 3, but plays Sides 3 and 4. The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 88147 A 1 S 1, Side 2 - 88147 B 1 S 1 (Record 1); Side 3 - 88147 C 1 S 1, Side 4 - 88147 D 1 S 1 (Record 2). Simon Blokker has yet another copy where the labels are Sides 1 and 4 on Record 1 and Sides 2 and 3 on Record 2. and the vinyl actually plays the same. However, the matrixes for Record 1 are A/B and for Record 2 are C/D.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara. Lars M. Banke and Simon Blokker for information and scans.

This release from the former Yugoslavia was manufactured and distributed by Suzy Records in Zagreb (now in Croatia) on behalf of CBS Records, and comes as two separate cassettes. The first cassette insert has black lettering on a yellow background and the second cassette insert has the opposite.  The cassettes are black with yellow paper labels and black text. There are several mistakes in the song titles on the outside and inside of the inserts and the cassette labels.

Tape 1: "Goin'To Acapulco" (outside and inside of insert; correct on label); "Lo And Berold!" (outside and inside of insert plus cassette label); "Please, Mts. Henry" (outside and inside of insert plus cassette label); "Yazoo Street Soandal" (cassette label only).

Tape 2: "Crash On The Levere" (outside of insert only)

Columbia C2K 33682 (Canada) - front scan by Jack from Canada (1980s release)
The first Canadian release has the Columbia name at the top right corner on the rear insert instead of the logo as on the US release. Moise Potié's mid-1990s Canadian copy has catalogue number "WC2K 33682" and only a six-page booklet. The rear insert design is significantly different, including the addition of a price code.

Sony Records SRCS 6257~58 (Japan), 2 Dec 1992 (two releases):

Sony Records SRCS 6257~58 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Hans Seegers (first release)

Hans Seeger's copy of the second 2CD release from 1992 is in an experimental 2CD jewel case of a design that was used for only a short period before the more common slimline 2CD jewel case was introduced. The case is thicker than a single CD jewel case but slimmer than a double-width case. It has a black, white and red obi in the "Nice Price Line 23" series with price ¥3,000. The obi has a date of "92-12-2" (2 Dec 1992) and there is also a 36-page booklet.

Gerd Rundel's copy comes in a folded card sleeve with a band-type obi with the same design and details as the first folded obi. The 36-page booklet and the two CDs are the same as those of Hans' copy. Sonny Boy McFitzson is of the opinion that the card sleeve and the obi are not genuine. Certainly the card sleeve has no Sony or other Japanese information.

The mid-1990s Columbia release came in a slim-line 2CD jewel case with the 12-page booklet now the front insert. This release was on sale until 2009. Billy Bolley's copy has an additional eight-page "Nice Price" booklet dated "2/92" (either "Issue 2, 1992" or "Feb 1992") with details of the current Columbia catalogue including 31 Dylan albums.

Gerd Rundel's copy came with a Nice Price "Dylan Originals/30 Years on Columbia" sticker on the front of the jewel case.

The CDs themselves have the Columbia US 1970s record label design. The only difference between the CDs in the digipak and jewel case releases is the catalogue number.

Sony Music SICP 2010-1 (Japan) - front of gatefold card sleeve with obi, scan by Wil Gielen

The four 2009 remasters were not released in Japan in digipaks but in mini-LP cardboard sleeves reproducing the US initial release with the original CBS/Sony Japan obi. In this case this is the Columbia C 233682 sleeve and CBS Sony SOPJ 120-121 obi.

The dark red and black side obi has a date of "09-05-27" (27 May 2009) and a price of ¥2,835. The withdrawal date is shown as "09-11-26" (26 Nov 2009), and the original release date as "75-6-26" (26 Jun 1975). There is an 16-page stapled booklet in English and a 32-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese. The CDs are in plain paper sleeves.

This limited edition hybrid SA-CD stereo release of this album is the first time it has been remastered in audiophile quality. It is therefore also listed in 2012. There is also a Mobile Fidelity high quality recording released as a heavyweight vinyl 2LP set. It comes in a folded heavy card sleeve with a booklet, an inner card sleeve with SA-CD details and the disc itself is in a structured textile sleeve. André Wilbers' copy may be a promo because it has no number on the rear, Dr. Walter Roedl's copy is numbered "00276".

The hybrid SA-CD disc has matrix numbers: "IFPI 1556 SONY DADC A0101977142-B911 35 A0101977142-A911 36". There was also a limited edition 180gm vinyl 2LP set, see above. Éamonn Ó Catháin says this is by far the best CD release of this album, with much warmer sound than the 2009 remastered release.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Dr. Walter Roedl and André Wilbers for information and scans.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The Basement Tapes comes in a folded card sleeve with the pockets for the CDs on the inside centre. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK17" plus "DISCS 19&20". The CDs are different in detail, the US The Basement Tapes CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312D19" and "88691924312D20", whereas the European CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312-19" and "88691924312-20". The European CDs were made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
