This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former
yearly Promo sections.

This album is of course the exception to that, as it's the only one in the
Dylan catalogue that has ever been deleted! The album is still listed on the
bobdylan.com
albums page.
Although I've submitted a correction, A Fool Such As I is still wrongly listed on bobdylan.com
as having been written by Buford Abner - it was actually written by Bill Trader,
see here. The 3CD set released in Oct 2007 is
also called Dylan! Thanks to "Isis" magazine, Dec 2012, for news of The Bootleg Series Vol. 10
 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), a 2CD set of
more out-takes
from the Self Portrait sessions. This does not after all include any
tracks from the long-deleted 1973 Dylan album. For
more information, see
.
However,
The Complete Album Collection Vol. One,

released in Oct 2013 (see
International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s), does include the album!
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the
dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Original US stereo LP, Columbia PC 32747, 16 Nov 1973
      This album
(nicknamed "Columbia's Revenge") was released by Columbia without Bob's authorisation during the
period when Bob was with Asylum/Island, and consists of entirely of covers,
out-takes from Self Portrait (two) and New Morning (seven).
      Before
its inclusion in The Complete Album Collection Vol. One in Nov
2013 it had never been released on CD in the USA or UK, although CD versions
were released in Japan in 1990 and mainland Europe in 1991. A cassette version
was long available in the USA, but it was deleted in the
      UK much earlier. |

 According
to Rod MacBeath's article "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves (Part 3)" in "The
Telegraph" 52, Summer 1995, the front design is a serigraph (a type of
silk screen print) by Richard Kenerson based on a photo of Bob by Al Clayton
that first appeared on the inside of the gatefold sleeve of Self Portrait
in 1970. The rear
design is credited to John Berg, who presumably took the photograph of what
looks like a river bed or a rock face which is merged with the blow-up of Al
Clayton's photo.

An earlier version of the album dated 5 Oct 1973 has a different
track listing:
  Side 1: Mr. Bojangles (R-0101);
The Ballad Of Ira Hayes (R-0104);
A Fool Such As I (R-0099);
Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (R-0096); Mary Ann
(R-0103). Side 2: Running; Sarah Jane (R-0098);
Lily Of The West (R-0097);
Alligator Man (Floyd Chance/Jimmy "C" Newman). Running
was released in Dec 2019 on the very limited 2CD set 50th Anniversary
  Collection 1969 (see

    2019),
  while
Alligator Man, appears on the equally limited Dec 2020 3CD set 50th Anniversary Collection 1970 in
  three versions (see
    2020), now
  re-released in 2021 as Bob Dylan 1970.
The order of the released album is:

Side 1:
Lily Of The West; Can't Help
Falling In Love (R-0100); Sarah Jane;
The Ballad Of Ira Hayes.
Side 2:
Mr. Bojangles; Mary Ann;
Big Yellow Taxi (R-0102); A
Fool Such As I; Spanish Is The Loving Tongue.

R-0104 The Ballad of Ira Hayes
(Peter La Farge) - New Morning out-take, recorded Columbia Studios, New York,
1 Jun 1970
Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona, was one of the six US Marines
photographed by Joe Rosenthal on 23 Feb 1945 in the iconic World War 2
photograph "Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima" (see
). After the war he succumbed to
alcoholism and died in 1954. His story is told in the 2006 Clint Eastwood film
"Flags Of Our Fathers", where he is played by Adam Beach. (He's previously been
portrayed in films by Lee Marvin and Tony Curtis!). Bob's recording of this song
by Peter La Farge, himself a Native American, is a highlight of this album.
According to Ian Woodward R-0104 was scheduled to be included in a tribute album to
Peter La Farge to be released in 2007. The album, Rare Breed: The Songs Of
Peter La Farge, was finally released in the USA by Slink Productions in
2010, but the included version of the song is by Johnny Cash. |

    R-0099 A Fool Such As I
(Bill Trader) - Self Portrait
out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 26 Apr 1969
This is the stereo version, a mono version (presumably a
reduction from stereo) was released on Columbia 7" singles (R-0099M, see
1974)
This song was written by Bill Trader, but is frequently wrongly credited on releases of this album and
Columbia singles to "B. Abner" (Buford Abner) - see authorship note
here! The original 1952 single release by Hank
Snow correctly credits the song! |

 R-0096 Spanish Is The
Loving Tongue (Charles Badger Clark/Billy Simon) - band version
with backing singers, Self Portrait
out-take recorded at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, 24 Apr 1969, not the solo
version R-0072 (stereo)/R-0072M (mono) released in 1971 as a single B-side, which was a 1970 New
Morning out-take. R-0072(M) has three verses, this version omits the second of those. The
solo take released in 2013 on The
Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) is different
from R-0072, but still means the song is released on a regular Dylan album and
no longer shown in red! An unexpected 1974 studio version of the song turned up in
Nov 2018 on the 6CD
Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 -
More Blood, More Tracks, and a 1975 live version was included in Jun 2019 on the
14CD set Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings.
On the 1973 Dylan album this track is either uncredited or wrongly listed as "Traditional".
See the note about writer credits for this song in the entry for R-0072 in 1971.

The promo copy shown has a radio station timing strip on
the front sleeve plus a red sticker also found on commercial copies. Gerd
Rundel's promo copy with the same timing strip has
first release labels and stamped matrix
numbers:
Side 1
- P AL 32747-2B, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2B.
The second promo copy shown has an orange “SPECIAL PROMOTION” sticker on the front,
plus a timing strip,
and a
“DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE” stamp on the rear. The sleeve was printed in the
USA by Shorepak.
The record again has first release labels, this time with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2D.

On these first release labels Sarah
Jane is uncredited and A Fool Such As I is
wrongly credited to "B. Abner". For more information about the incorrect crediting of
A Fool Such As I to "B. Abner" on the
first release Side 2 record label, see
here. Unlike the first Canadian release below,
the title ""DYLAN" is the same size on all PC 32747 labels.
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the first
release sold in Mexico with grey/white "CBS" stickers on the record labels.

Ger Hemel has a copy of
the US second release that was sold in Jamaica. The rear sleeve has a silver
sticker with text “MADE IN KINGSTON, JAMAICA BY RECORD SPECIALISTS LTD”.
This album was almost certainly made in the
USA and exported to Jamaica, where the sticker was affixed.
The record has the same
labels as shown but different stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2G,
Side 2 - P BL 32747-2D.

Gil Lamont has a later copy of PC 32747 in the same sleeve with no red sticker on
the front. The label on Side 1 is different in that
Sarah Jane is credited to "Arr. Bob
Dylan". (Sarah Jane has no credit at all on the first
and second release labels.)
A Fool Such As I
is again correctly credited to "B.
Trader" on the Side 2 label. This release corresponds to the Canadian
release that can be dated to after 1976. This is the same as Gerd Rundel's third
release export copy listed with no barcode on the rear sleeve. The record has stamped matrix numbers:
Side 1 - P AL 32747-2E, Side 2 - P-BL 32747-2A.
Bob Mazer's copy of PC 32747 with the same labels is probably the same as Gil's. |

Columbia PC 32747 (USA) - detail of spine, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
(third release)
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy of this album that now has a
barcode on the rear sleeve. The sleeve was made by Shorepak US. The record
labels are identical to those of Bob Mazer and Gil Lamont. The record of this
copy has
matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32747-2K
(handwritten), Side 2 - P BL 32747-2A
(stamped).
These
copies probably overlapped with the JC 32747 copies below!

Sergio Mariano Romay has a sealed copy bought around
1988/89 which has stickers with "JC 32747" covering up the previous catalogue
number of "PC 32747" on the front and spine of the sleeve. The front sleeve also
has stickers with "$5.99" price and "THE NICE PRICE". This copy
does not have a
barcode on the rear sleeve, although his copy of PC 32747 above does.
Gerd Rundel has
a copy of a 1980s release with “JC 32747” on the left of the centre hole,
although it still has "PC 32747" on the front sleeve and spine as Sergio Mariano Romay's copy above,
and was again made by Shorepak US. This time the rear sleeve does have a barcode at rear
top right. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32747-2K
(handwritten), Side 2 - P BL-32747-2K (stamped).
These
copies probably overlapped with the PC 32747 copies above!

Lars also has a third first release copy with the
same "CBS" sticker on the front sleeve, but no stickers on the record
      labels (not shown).
The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2D.
Gerd Rundel has a
US first release export variant with red shaped CBS stickers on the bottom
of the labels. There is a "CBS" sticker
over the Columbia logo on top left of the front, but the rear sleeve has no
stickers. On the labels
Sarah Jane is uncredited and
A Fool Such As I is wrongly credited to B. Abner. The record of this copy
has the same
stamped matrix numbers as Lars' first two copies:
Side 1 - P AL 32747-2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2C.
Columbia PC 32747 (USA for export) - second
release (six copies):

sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke |

Lars also has a fourth copy bought in Sweden with a "CBS" sticker over the Columbia
logo on the front sleeves and different "CBS" stickers over the labels.
The sticker is the same shape as the first example but has a black "CBS"
      logo instead of white.
      This is a
second release copy with Sarah Jane uncredited
on Side 1, while Side 2 has A Fool Such As I
      correctly
      credited to "B. Trader".  The
      record of this copy has
      stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2D
(same as the third copy above).
Lars has a fifth copy bought in Denmark in the regular US sleeve with no
stickers, but with the red/black shaped "CBS" stickers over the record
labels as shown for the fourth copy.

Lars M. Banke's
sixth copy (another US Dylan second release copy) has a "CBS"
sticker on the front sleeve, but “Columbia” is not erased on the rear sleeve.
There are again red/black shaped "CBS" stickers
on the record labels. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1
- P AL 32747 – 2D, Side 2 - P BL 32727 – 2D. Lars has a seventh copy
with the same label stickers where the record label is significantly redder.

stickers, scan by Lars M. Banke |

 Lars M. Banke's
eighth copy (another US Dylan second release copy) has no stickers on the sleeve,
and “Columbia” is again not erased on the rear sleeve.
There are red/white ring-shaped "CBS" stickers
on the record labels. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1
- P AL 32747 – 2D, Side 2 - P BL 32727 – 2C. Lars
has a ninth export copy bought
in Sweden with the usual grey CBS sticker on the Columbia logo on the front
sleeve (as above), but “Columbia” is not erased at the bottom of the rear
sleeve. The record labels have the same
red/white ring-shaped "CBS" stickers as shown.

Lars has a ninth copy with a grey/white CBS sticker on the front sleeve, no
stickers or obscuring on the rear sleeve and with red/purple CBS stickers with
white lettering on the top of the labels. The record with the same label
stickers shown above has A Fool Such As I credited to “B. Abner” on Side 2. On
this one the song is credited to “B. Trader”. The record of this copy has
stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747 2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747 2D.
Lars' tenth  U.S. export copy was bought in Spain and also has a
grey/white CBS sticker on the front sleeve, but no stickers or obscuring on the
rear sleeve except a mysterious "12B" stamped at rear top left. The record has
red ring-shaped stickers with a CBS logo in black lettering at the top on the
labels. It again has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 32747-2C, Side
2 -P BL 32747-2D.
Lars also has two Canadian copies
      bought in Sweden, see below.

Dr.
      Walter Roedl's
album was bought in Austria in 1975. It is a standard Columbia US release except
for a white sticker which folds over the top corners of the front and rear
sleeves with the CBS logo and the Dutch catalogue number "CBS S 69 049". It has
the red sticker from the US release above promoting A Fool
Such As I and several other tracks. It has a contemporary 1975 CBS inner
sleeve advertising such albums as Dylan and Blood On The Tracks.
The Columbia US record labels have no
stickers. Like Lars' fourth to seventh copies above, this is a second release copy with Sarah Jane uncredited
on Side 1, while Side 2 has A Fool Such As I
credited to "B. Trader". The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL
32747-2C, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2D (again like Lars' fourth copy above).
Columbia PC 32747 (USA for export) - third

      Columbia PC 32747
(USA for export) - front scan by Gerd

    Gerd Rundel
has a third release US export copy. “COLUMBIA” is obscured with black
marker pen in three places of the sleeve: front
    top left
below the catalogue number; in the copyright text at the bottom of the rear
    sleeve; on the spine. |

The “COLUMBIA” logos on both record labels are obscured with a painted or printed
black ring, not with stickers. This is a third release - Sarah Jane is
credited to “Arr: Bob Dylan” on the Side 1 label, A
Fool Such As I is correctly credited to “B. Trader” on the Side 2
label. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL
    32747-2E, Side 2 - P BL 32747-2G.
Columbia PC 32747 (USA for export to West
Germany) - third release variant 2:

      Columbia PC 32747
(USA for export) - front with stickers, scan by Gerd
    Rundel |

This
is an USA release
for export to West Germany, probably in the mid-1980s.
There is a

      "müller"
German record store sticker with
price DM 15.95 on the front sleeve.
This is a copy of what I have
called the third release variant 2 because the catalogue number is still "PC
32747" but there is now a barcode on the rear sleeve as
on Sergio Mariano Romay's copy above.
The sleeve was made by Shorepak US as was that of the copy above.
The top left of the front has a
vertical "CBS The Family of Music" sticker to obscure the Columbia logo,
and the rear sleeve has two "CBS The Family of Music" stickers at the bottom
obscuring two occurrences of "Columbia".
"COLUMBIA" is also blackened on the spine.
Both record labels have been
pasted over completely with yellow "CBS The Family of Music" import stickers
with German text meaning "For product law purposes this label must be
over-stickered – legal import".
Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff believes
this stickering was not done by the German retailer, but by CBS Germany's import
service. The record of
this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 -
(F-AP)  PAL 32747-G2B, Side 2 - (HXPY)
PBL-32747-G2B.

Bringing It All Back Home with the the same "CBS Family of Music" stickers
on the sleeve and yellow label stickers.

This album was also released on reel-to-reel tape, in
4-track stereo running at 3¾" per second. All tracks are the standard stereo
album versions. The
tape reel comes in a black card box, hinged on the left, with a white
wrap-around label and a separate label on the top of the box.
The "DYLAN" text on the front of the box is proportionally the same size as on
the UK front sleeve, but positioned differently.
This was the next-to-last Dylan album to be released on reel-to-reel tape, the
last tape release being Slow Train Coming in 1979, although none of the
intervening albums had tape releases!
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Steven Fant for
    information and scans.

"Dylan" - stereo compact cassette
releases, Columbia PCT 32747 (USA),
1974; re-released late 1970s/early 1980s,  late 1980s:
The US cassette release was still on sale in the late 1990s,
and was by then the only format still available.

Columbia PCT 32747 (USA) - end of cassette case, scan by Steven Fant (1974
release)

    The second US release
shown dates from the late 1970s/early 1980s and again has a light grey cassette
with black text printed directly on it, there are again no paper labels. The
cassette looks identical to that of the first release, but has a textured
edge as shown. It also has "MADE IN USA" embossed on Side 2 of the cassette
case, missing from the 1974 release. The insert does not have a barcode and is blank on
    the reverse.
The third US release dates from the late 1980s and has a
barcode on the insert, which is also blank on the reverse. The cassette is
transparent smoked grey with white text printed directly on it,
there are again no paper labels.
Thanks to Jack from Canada, Gerd Rundel and Steven
      Fant for information and scans.

      Columbia PC 32747 (Canada) -
detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (first
and second releases, "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.")
Gerd Rundel has three copies of the regular Canadian release. Both the sleeve
and record of all three were made in Canada. The records have 1970s style
labels with the ring of Columbia logos.
The first release record has red
    Columbia labels with
 Sarah Jane
uncredited as on the US first release and A Fool Such As I
wrongly credited to "B. Abner" as on the US first release. The
title "DYLAN" is significantly smaller than the titles of the second and third
release labels. The record of this
first release copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32747-1A, Side 2 -
    BL-32747-1A.
The second release record has red Columbia labels with

 Sarah Jane
uncredited as on the US first release and A Fool Such As I
correctly credited to "B. Trader" as on the US second release. The record of
the second copy again has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32747-1A, Side 2 -
BL-32747-1A. Both of these releases were
manufactured by Columbia Records of Canada Ltd.

      Columbia PC 32747 (Canada) -
rear scan by Gerd Rundel (third
    release) |

Both the rear sleeve and the record labels of the third
release now have "CBS RECORDS CANADA
LTD." instead of the earlier "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.".
Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records
Canada Ltd. in late 1976, so this release is after then.

     On
the Side 1 record label Sarah
    Jane is credited to "Arr.
Bob Dylan" as on the second US release. There is a mistake on the Side 2
record label with "CBS, Inc." shown as just "CBS, In". The record of the
third copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32747-1B-2HDZK:,
    Side 2 - BL-32747-1A. |

Columbia PC 32747 (Canada for export) - front with Swedish seal, scan by Lars
M. Banke (first copy) |
Lars M. Banke has a copy of the third Canadian release with a Swedish
seal across the sleeve opening and taped rings obscuring the "Columbia" logos on
the record labels ("MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD" is still visible). The Swedish text says that if the seal is broken the album will be replaced only
if it was faulty when bought. Lars M. Banke also
has a copy of the second Canadian PC 32747 release bought in Scandinavia
that has had the "Columbia" logos on the front, rear and spine of the sleeve
obscured with black circular stickers. The Columbia Canada information at
the bottom of the rear sleeve is not obscured. On the record labels there
are again black ring-shaped stickers over the ring of "Columbia" logos. |

obscured, scan by Lars M. Banke (third copy)
    Lars has another third release
copy where "Columbia" is roughly obscured with marker pen once on both the
front and rear sleeves. The ring of Columbia logos on the record labels has
this time been obscured with black marker pen, not with ring-shaped
stickers (this may have been from an inked rubber stamp). The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 -
    AL 32737 1B [plus some signs/symbols], Side 2 - BL 32737 1A.

cassette release. More scans of this release

"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 69049
(UK), 1973, re-released late 1970s/early 1980s; stereo
LP reissue - CBS 32286 (UK), 1982 to late 1980s; CBS S 69049/32286 (Ireland),
1980s:
"DYLAN" on the front sleeve at top
right is much larger on the UK releases than others worldwide! There
were at least seven releases of this album in Britain: first in 1973 as "CBS 69049" with old-style
labels (my copy), in late 1970s/early 1980s again as "CBS 69049" with new-style orange/yellow labels
(Gerd Rundel's copy), then in 1982 and 1983 as "CBS 32286" still with orange/yellow labels
(three variants - Mick Robinson and Gerd's copies), and then later in the 1980s
again as "CBS 32286" but with red labels (two variants - Gerd and Hans Seegers'
copies).
Lily Of The West is misspelled "Lilly Of The
West" on the Side 1 record labels of all the UK releases!
Fortunately A Fool Such As I
is correctly credited to "Trader" on the Side 1 record labels of all the UK
releases.
CBS S 69049 (UK), 1973, re-released late 1970s/early 1980s:

    |

CBS 69049 (UK) - front, note the "DYLAN" is much larger than on the US
sleeve (1973 release - my copy)
     |

Hans Seegers has an acetate of CBS 69049 (UK), with plain white labels
and matrix numbers Side 1 - S 69049 A 1, Side 2 - S 69049 B 1. My copy shown has
"69049" on the front sleeve and spine, and "S 69049" on the record labels. The
sleeve was
made by
Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. The record has stamped matrix
numbers: Side 1 - S 69049 A1, Side 2 - S 69049 B1.
My 1973 copy of the UK album has a printed CBS inner sleeve, with a "magazine" called
"THE INNER SLEEVE". Both sides of the sleeve contain
illustrations of CBS albums of the time, including Pat Garrett & Billy
The Kid,
plus albums by Roger McGuinn (see 1973), Janis Joplin and Hammond/Bloomfield/Dr. John. The rear
inner sleeve shows the then CBS postal
address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1. John Martin has
a copy of CBS 69049 with the same labels as mine but with a different inner
sleeve, "THE INNER SLEEVE Issue 5", featuring Johnny Cash, Johnny Mathis, Johnny
Nash, Barbra Streisand, etc. I assume CBS UK used whichever version of the
sleeve was current when records were sent out to dealers. |

CBS 69049 (UK) - detail of rear (1973 release)
The
late 1970s/early 1980s copy comes in the same sleeve as my 1973 release with
“Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.” on bottom of the rear sleeve, but the record is
in a plain white inner sleeve. The record now has orange/yellow CBS labels
with "LC|0149" in a capsule added to the labels. "DYLAN" is printed twice
above the centre hole (the previous and some later releases just have it once). "MADE IN
ENGLAND" is still at the bottom of the labels. The record of the copy shown has
handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-69049-A-2, Side 2 -
CBS-69049/32286-B3.
CBS 32286 (UK), 1982, 1983 (two
variants):

CBS 32286 (UK/Ireland) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (1982, 1983 and mid-1980s releases) |

The 1982 release has a new catalogue number, CBS 32286. The
    sleeve is still printed by
Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd., and was also used for the Irish release below.
"LC|0149" is now printed in a capsule on the rear sleeve at bottom right.
The record still has orange/yellow CBS labels with "MADE IN ENGLAND" now
    printed in the circumference text.

On the record labels "DYLAN" is printed twice
    as for the last "CBS
S 69049" release. The text layout to the left and right of the centre hole
is the same as for the last "CBS S 69049" release, but the arrows below
"STEREO" to the left of the centre hole are now missing.
    A
    US catalogue number "KC 32747"

    is printed
on the second text line to the right of the centre hole (the US catalogue
    number was actually PC 32747).

    The
record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers Side 1 -
    CBS-32286-A4, Side 2 - 69049, CBS-32286-B3.

The 1983 release comes in the same sleeve but has has significantly
different CBS record labels, still orange/yellow. "DYLAN" is now printed
only once, "LC|0149" is now printed at high top right, the "33⅓RPM" playing speed is now printed to the left of the centre hole above
"Stereo", which is now in upper/lowercase.
Both Mick Robinson and Gerd Rundel have copies of this album. The record of
Gerd's first 1983 release copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 -32286 (stamped),
    CBS S 69049 A2 (handwritten), Side 2 - 32286 (stamped), S 69049 B2
    (stamped).

    has
disappeared from the second text line to the right of the centre hole, but
apart from these two differences, the record labels are the same.

    (handwritten).
CBS 32286 (UK), mid-1980s (two
variants):
    The mid-1980s release comes in
the same sleeve, but the record now has red CBS labels with a similar
text layout to the 1982 release labels, the playing speed of "33⅓
RPM" is now back to the right of the centre hole instead of the left,
and "STEREO" is again upper case.

CBS 32286 (UK) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (mid-1980s releases) |

There are two different record label variants. Gerd
Rundel's variant 1 copy has "DYLAN" printed twice above the centre hole and
the catalogue number on the right is "CBS 32286". The record of the copy
shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-32286-A4
(handwritten),
Side 2 - CBS-(scratched out)-B6 (handwritten) with "32286"
    stamped above scratched out area.
Hans Seegers' variant 2 copy has "DYLAN" printed once
only and the catalogue number is shown just as "32286" instead of "CBS 32286".
There are also differences in the song title layout as shown in the detail scans
and the music copyright details are arranged differently.

(stamped after the original handwritten catalogue number has been erased!).

CBS 40-69049 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (1970s release) |

These cassette releases are undated, but they have Dolby noise reduction, not
present on early cassettes. The tracks are
reordered in that Mr. Bojangles is now the last
track on Side 1 and The Ballad Of Ira Hayes is the
first track on Side 2, the opposite way round to the album. As with the UK LP
releases,
Lily Of The West is misspelled "Lilly
Of The West" every time it occurs: twice on the front of the inserts, in
the tracklist on the inside of the inserts and on both Side 1s. Again as with
the UK LP releases,
A Fool Such As I is correctly credited to "B.
Trader" on the inside of the inserts. The cassette cases are light grey with
blue or black printed text, there
      are no paper labels.

CBS 40-32286 (UK) - cassette Side 2 scan by Wayne Carr (1980s
    release) |

The first release has the original catalogue number of CBS 69049, so probably
dates from the late 1970s. The second release dates from the 1980s as it
comes from after the catalogue number change from CBS 69049 to CBS 32286 (see UK
vinyl releases above). Paul Shenton's 1980s copy has a longer insert with a
cut-off CBS Nice Price voucher to send off for album and cassette racks at a
reduced price. It's possible that Wayne Carr's 1980s insert also originally had
this cut-off voucher.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara, Wayne Carr and Paul
	  Shenton for information and pictures.

On the Side 2 label A Fool Such As I is wrongly
credited to "B. Abner". On the other hand, unlike the UK releases,
Lily Of The West is correct!
The Dutch CBS S 69049 mid/late 1970s releases again have "Columbia"
whitened out on the front sleeve, "NL printed in Holland" on the rear sleeve and "Made In Holland" on the record
labels. The record now has orange/yellow CBS labels. A Fool Such As I is

credited to "B. Abner", while Lily Of The

Sergio Mariano Romay may have the first mid/late 1970s copy
shown (listed as variant 1) - "B" in a circle is present at rear
top right, but "54" in a circle is not present. Instead there is a white
circular sticker with "IV" at rear top right. The record
of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69049-A (faintly handwritten)
plus P AL 32747-2C (deeply stamped) on the opposite side of the vinyl, Side
    2 - S 69049-B (faintly handwritten). Gerd Rundel's copy (listed as
variant 2) has "54" and "B" in circles at rear top right. Lars M. Banke has
what may the latest version with a "CB|231"
sticker at rear top right covering over the

"Dylan" - stereo LP re-releases:
CBS 32286 (NL), 1983, re-released late 1980s:
The 1980s releases have the new catalogue number "CBS
32286". On the front sleeve the US logo with catalogue number PC 32747 has
    been whitened out.
The 1983 release with the new catalogue number "CBS
32286" has a record that still has orange/yellow CBS labels. Directly
equivalent to the record labels of the UK releases above, "MADE IN HOLLAND"
has been moved to the circumference text on the right and there is no text
at the bottom of the labels. On the Side 2 label A Fool Such As I
is still wrongly credited to "B. Abner" instead of "B. Trader". The late 1980s
release comes in the same sleeve but this time the record has plain red CBS
labels. "MADE IN HOLLAND" is again in the circumference text on the right
along with CBS copyright information. There is again no text at the bottom
of the labels. On the Side 2 label A Fool Such As I
is still wrongly credited to "B. Abner".
Lars M. Banke has a Dutch copy bought in
Stockholm with a gold CBS Records Sweden promo stamp on the rear sleeve at
top right. The record of this copy has the same 1983 orange/yellow labels as
    Manuel's copy.

 The inserts
of these Dutch releases date from the 1980s because they have has Dolby noise reduction
and the new "Nice Price" catalogue number 40-32286, introduced in 1982. The inserts have "Printed in
Holland" and the cassettes have "Made in Holland", while both have the "BIEM/STEMRA"
logo. Lily Of The West is correctly spelled.
Both
cassettes are light grey with black text directly on to them, there are no paper
labels.  They are dated "1973".
Pierre van der Pol's
cassette has the Columbia logo, which dates it to the 1990s after the name
change from CBS in 1991, but still has the same CBS inserts.

    This Italian album
released in 1974 was made by CBS Sugar S.p.A. and distributed by
Distribuzione Messaggerie Musicali, both Milan. The mastering date of
"15/1/74" is stamped on both sides of the record in addition to the matrix
numbers. The sleeve has two folded-over flaps on the rear, top and bottom,
with unique white borders. It comes in a generic printed CBS Sugar inner sleeve
with details of contemporary albums including Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. The record has orange
CBS labels with an "SIAE" copyright stamp on Side 1. On Side 2,
A Fool Such As I is wrongly credited to "B. Abner".
The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S CI 69049*1L, Side 2 - S CI
69049*2L, where "*" is a rhombus symbol like the picture shown on
right. Manuel García Jara submitted scans of this album
much earlier, which I missed - apologies for that. His record has

    matrix numbers:

    Side 1 - S CI 69049 1L  15/1/74, Side 2 - S
    CI 69049 2L 15/1/74 (pressing date 15 Jan 1974). Manuel's album is identical
except for the position of the "SIAE" stamp on the Side 1 label, which
is still on the left but slightly higher. As the labels were hand stamped
this is to be expected, but both copies are shown for information. Manuel's
copy has the same matrix numbers, including the rhombus symbol as on the
    right. |

(Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Wayne Carr (all 1970s releases except second
1974 variant, dated 1973, Discos CBS address "Calle
    Princesa 1, Madrid-13")

Wayne Carr's copy has very dark orange CBS labels
with song titles in Spanish and English.
Like the Spanish releases of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits
    and Nashville Skyline,
this album has no title on the record labels, just "Bob Dylan". The
first copy of the album had a CBS Spain insert listing
current albums dated 31 Dec 1973, although as stated the sleeve is dated
1974 in the printer details. Lars M. Banke has a copy where the rear
sleeve has "(P) 197 " instead of "(P) 1973" on the bottom line of text. On this
copy the record labels are a more normal orange colour and have the text to the
right of the centre hole in the same order as those of Wayne Carr's copy, but
the lines have different spacing. The record of this copy has matrix numbers:
    Side 1 - P AL 32747-1B, Side 2 - P BL 32747-1A.
Manuel García Jara's third variant copy has the same
sleeve but normal orange CBS labels with a different text layout to the
right of the centre hole. On the first and second variants the CBS copyright information
comes under "SGAE", on Manuel's much rarer copy this is on the bottom line
of the text. Manuel's copy has
the same matrix
numbers as Lars' first copy: Side 1 - PAL 32747-1B, Side 2 - PBL 32747-1A. Lars M. Banke
has a second copy with a fourth variant where "SGAE" is between the CBS copyright information and
the "Déposito Legal" line. Lars's copy
has matrix number PAL 32747-1A 17 on Side 1.
CBS S 69049 (Spain), 1976 (two variants):
The next release of CBS S 69049 again has
the same sleeve as the first pressing (with "(P) 1973" on the rear as expected)
and with the Discos CBS address still "Calle
Princesa 1". The record now has orange/yellow
CBS labels. There are two label variants - variant 1 has
no arrows under "ESTEREO" left of the
centre hole and
      "33⅓"
on a separate line. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers:
Side 1 - PAL
69049 1B, Side 2 - PBL 69049 1A.
The variant 2 labels have
different typesetting and arrows under "ESTEREO" and
      "33⅓"
on the same line left of the centre hole.
They are similar to those of the 1982 release apart from the catalogue number: this album still
has "S 69049". The copy of the variant 2 record shown has
matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32747-1A 17,
Side 2 - PBL 32747-1A.
CBS S 32011 (Spain), 1982:

    CBS S 32011 (Spain) -
detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1982 release, dated 1982,
Discos CBS address now "Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16")
CBS 32286 (PR) (Spain), 1985, re-released 1988:

    CBS 32286 (Spain) -
detail of rear with sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (first 1985 release, dated
1973,
Discos CBS address now "Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046-Madrid",
new postcode)

    CBS 32286 (Spain) -
detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1985 and 1988 releases, dated 1973)
This album was re-released
in 1985 with a slightly changed catalogue number, CBS 32286, in the new
1980s "Nice Price" series. "(PR)" is printed below the catalogue number on the
front sleeve. The sleeve was again printed by Offset ALG, Madrid, with different copyright
text at the bottom of the rear sleeve.
The address of Discos CBS S.A. is now Paseo de la Castellana
    93, 28046-Madrid (change of postcode).
There is what looks like a barcode sticker on the rear sleeve.
The record was again made by Discos CBS S.A. and now has red CBS
labels dated 1985 with titles in Spanish
and English. The song titles are listed
continuously, with a similar layout as the CBS S 32286 release with
orange/yellow record labels above. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix
    numbers: Side 1 - 32286-A0, Side 2 - 32286-B0.
Manuel's CBS 32286 (PR)
copy has CBS "PRECIO REDONDO [ROUND PRICE = NICE PRICE]" sticker on the
front sleeve. The record again has red CBS labels, but with a different layout
from that of the first 1985 release. The song titles are now listed on separate
lines. The record of the copy shown again has stamped matrix
    numbers: Side 1 - 32286-A0, Side 2 - 32286-B0.

CBS logo missing at top left) |

The sleeve of the last CBS release from the late 1980s/early 1990s has two
differences from the previous releases of the 1980s: the CBS logo is missing
from the front at top left, and the rear has "CBS 32286" and a barcode at
top right, not present on the 1980s rear sleeves.
The record was again made by Technodisco S.A. and the circumference text now
includes the Tecnodisco telephone number. The record still has red CBS
labels and the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32286 A, Side
    2 - 32286 B. |

logo again missing at top left) |

    Even though this

    album was out of print
in the rest of the world, it was reissued in Spain in 1992 on the CBS/Sony
label (CBS changed to Columbia in 1991 in all other countries than Spain and
Japan, and in Spain the Columbia name was still owned by RCA). This album
was made in 1992 by Tecnodisco S.A. for CBS/Sony. The
    record company logo
is again missing from the front at top left, and the rear has "CBS 32286" at top right,
but not the expected barcode as on the last CBS release.
This sleeve also has a front "Nice Price" sticker instead of "Precio Redondo".
The records have red CBS/Sony labels with the same layout and typeface as
    the last CBS release with
the circumference text again including the Tecnodisco
telephone number. The record of the copy shown has
    matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32286-A+,

CBS 69049 (Greece) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers
The Greek test pressing and commercial
release of Dylan are very rare. Bob's releases were generally banned in Greece under
the military junta regime from 1967 to 1974 - this one was allowed, presumably
because they considered it contained no political material.
The
album was distributed by an Athens company called Music-box.

The sleeve was printed in Greece by

Fotiadis & Ioannidis. "Music-box" is described as "Exclusive Representative
of CBS Records in Greece", although on the 1973 Greek release of
    Nashville
    Skyline
this has changed to "General Representative of CBS Records in Greece". This
information here is in English only, on the 1973 Greek release of
    Nashville
    Skyline
it is given in English and Greek and the printer's name is missing.
The Greek commercial release has dark red labels, not the usual CBS
orange. For the Greek releases of Nashville Skyline and Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid see
International Albums (Regular).

"Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS SBP 234429
(Australia), Nov 1973, re-released mid-1970s and late 1970s:
There are also two variants of the orange/yellow labels, released in the
mid-1970s and late 1970s. The second has longer copyright text along the bottom
of the labels. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17
Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS
copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have
occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978
still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train
Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.) Stuart Moore has a copy with
mixed labels - Side 1 has the shorter copyright text, but Side 2 has the longer
copyright text. Lars M. Banke has a copy where both sides have the shorter
copyright text.

The 1974 Yugoslav release of CBS 69049 was released
by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia) on behalf of CBS.
    The rear sleeve is
different from those of subsequent releases as shown.
The record was pressed by Jugoton, also of
    Zagreb, and
has plain orange CBS labels, with "SAKOJ" and "(P) 1974 CBS Inc." on the
    labels, as well as
    "Strana" instead of "Side".
    On Side 1
    Sarah
Jane is incorrectly shown as "SARA JANES".
    On Side 2
A Fool Such As I is
incorrectly credited to "B. Abner, Le Fevre Sing Pub
Corp." (this was actually the correct publishing company for the song
of the same name written by Buford Abner, see authorship note
here). Spanish Is
The Loving Tongue is correct, unlike the 1984 release
    below. The
    record of the copy shown
    has matrix numbers:
    Side 1 - ZP ULS-87A  11474, Side 2 - ZP ULS-87B   11474 - "11474" is the
    mastering date (11 Apr 1974).

The late 1970s release from Suzy Records
has a different rear sleeve, with the Yugoslav information in
grey text in a black box at bottom right. The record was again pressed by Jugoton
    and now
has orange/yellow CBS labels, with "SOKOJ" ("SAKOJ" became "SOKOJ"
in 1976) and "(P) 1974 CBS Inc." on the labels, but now has
    "Side" instead of "Strana".
    On Side 1
    Sarah
Jane is now incorrectly shown as "SARA JAMES"!
    On Side 2
A Fool Such As I is
still incorrectly credited to "B. Abner, Le Fevre
    Sing Pub Corp.".

The 1984 Yugoslav release of CBS 69049 was also released by Suzy
Records and has "CBS 69049 SOKOJ (P) 1984 CBS Inc." on the record labels. The
rear sleeve has different Yugoslav text, both at bottom right and printed
vertically on the right edge. The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels.
The pressing company is not shown.
A Fool Such As I is
still incorrectly credited to "B. Abner". Spanish Is

    Simon Blokker has a
copy of the 1984 release with the same front sleeve and record labels as
shown, but with a line of Yugoslav text blacked out for some reson. The
vertical text is also as shown.

The record was again pressed by Jugoton
    and has
    red CBS labels.

"Dylan" - promo and commercial stereo CD releases, Sony Records SRCS 6163 (Japan),
1 Dec 1991:
This CD is now long out of print, so is very scarce - rumour has it
that Bob himself ordered it to be deleted. Dylan
was
available in the USA in the 1990s on cassette only. The album is not available in the UK
in any form as it has been deleted from the Columbia "Nice Price"
catalogue. Because of its scarcity, all CD copies command high prices when they
become available in places like eBay!

The CD release of this 1973 album was renamed Bob Dylan (A Fool Such As I) in Europe
(after what was considered the most popular track), but remained
just Dylan
in Japan. Sony Records
    SRCS
6163 (Japan) had a black, red,
white, yellow and blue obi with the price ¥1,800
    (¥1,748
plus sales tax) and dated "91-12-1" (1 Dec 1991). The picture on the front of the Japanese CD is a wider
crop of the LP cover than the one on the Dutch release.
Also,
the tracklisting appears on the front of the Dutch release but not on the front
of the Japanese insert. The rear inserts are completely different - the Japanese
insert uses the rear album picture, while the Dutch insert is plain. The
Japanese release has a lyrics booklet in English and Japanese. Wil Gielen has a
promo copy with a numbered promo sticker on the rear insert and Japanese
characters indicating a sample in the clear centre of the CD. This CD and Wayne
Carr's commercial CD have the matrix number "DPA-1150 1" in the centres of the
CDs. Wil's commercial CD has a second matrix number "DPA-1550 2".
In "The Bridge" issue 13, Autumn 2002, Alan
Hoaksey lists three CD releases of this album, the two on this page and one for
the USA as Columbia CK
    32747
from Apr 1983. I have no confirmation of such a US CD release, although "PC 32747"
was the catalogue number of the original US release.
Both
John Howells and Bob Stacy have told me Columbia vinyl albums were reissued in
the 1980s with "CK" prefixes replacing the previous "PC"
prefixes, and that Dylan CD releases did not commence until Infidels in
1984, with earlier albums being released on CD for the first time between 1984
and 1990. Therefore 1983's "CK 32747" was probably a vinyl
reissue - confirmation required!
Thanks to Ian Stewart, Raoul Verolleman, Mark Goedegebuur and Wayne Carr for information about the
Japanese CD and scans.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol.
One" - 47CD boxed
set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; USB stick,
Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520
(Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album
Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke
Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card
sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set
of previously released non-album tracks entitled
Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and
The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album,
also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set
Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
    Jackson (Acoustic version),
R-0085, see
    1971. The set is
    therefore listed in 2013.
The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and
    previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker
card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.

The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK13"
plus "DISC 14". The CDs are different in detail, the US
Dylan CD has
catalogue number "88691924312D14", whereas
the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-14". This
album has been
remastered, so is the
third Dylan album remastered for this project and the first official appearance
of this album on CD in the USA or UK. The European CD was made in the EU
(probably Austria).
The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs,
and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I
haven't shown them for the later CDs.

    details of the set, see

for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan
    in four decade-related parts, with
the intention to release them all in 2014.
The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with top obis, printed inner
sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs.
    Bob's 1970s albums from
Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming were released in Japan
on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2
discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP
    30500.

    The 2013 remastered
    Dylan
is SICP 30488. The CD reproduces "Side 1" of the
original Columbia US CD and only lists the Side 1 tracks. The 20-page booklet
includes a Japanese translation of Clinton Heylin's liner notes, information
about the recording dates and personnel of the songs (in Japanese), additional
liner notes (including a short write-up about each song) by Toyo Nakamura, and
lyrics in Japanese and English.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and
Moise Potié for information and
scans.
"Dylan"  - gold CD release, Columbia/Sony Music

(Australia), 10 Apr 2020:

    no front sticker) |

This 2020 release is reported to come in a jewel case with a "Gold Series" front sticker.
Unfortunately the description is wrong and it is actually the single
CD compilation Dylan extracted from
the 3CD set with that title released in Oct 2007. The 1973 Dylan album
has never been released on CD in Australia.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin
for information.
