"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid"
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Revised 07 March, 2024.
Original US stereo LP, Columbia KC 32460, 13 Jul 1973 According to Rod MacBeath's article "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves (Part 3)" in "The Telegraph" 52, Summer 1995, the album’s front design was intended to be a collage of paintings by Bob, but these paintings were lost during transportation from Mexico City to Los Angeles. Instead, the front just has the film title in lettering by John Van Hamersveld, which was embossed on the first US release sleeve. The rear photograph by Manuel Palomino is from the film set with R. G. Armstrong as Ollinger and Kris Kristofferson as Billy the Kid. The rear sleeve credits photography to Manuel Palomino, Bob Jenkins and Sara Dylan (misspelled "Sarah") but these photos were intended to be included on a poster which was never actually included with the album. The rear sleeve of US releases was changed to credit only Manuel Palomino with photography (see detail scans below) – the rear sleeves of other worldwide releases were never changed. Thanks to Dag Braathen for the scan of the poster, which may have been included with some promo copies. For versions of this album with rarities, see 1973. For an unauthorised Taiwanese release, see Questionable Releases. |
Tracklisting:
Side 1: Main Title Theme (Billy); Cantina Theme (Workin' For The Law); Billy 1; Bunkhouse Theme; River Theme.
Side 2: Turkey Chase; Knockin' On Heaven's Door; Final Theme; Billy 4; Billy 7.
The 50th Anniversary Collection 1973 (see below and 2023) contains 28 out-takes from the recording sessions.
Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for finding a copy of the US album Columbia KC 32460 on eBay with a plain orange sleeve without any printing. The album title can be seen on the front in relief. |

Wagon Wheel,
which is actually a version of Arthur Crudup's Rock Me
Mama, was on their album O.C.M.S. (Nettwerk
Records, USA, 2004) and Sweet Amarillo, a
version of which
has also been copyrighted by Donna Weiss, is on their album
Remedy (ATO Records, USA, 2014). For both see
Starlight In The East: Bob Dylan’s Unreleased Songs. Both Rock Me Mama and Sweet Amarillo, have now been released on the 50th Anniversary Collection 1973 (see 2023), which contains 28 out-takes from the recording sessions in Mexico and California. Sweet Amarillo is credited solely to Donna Terry Weiss. |

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia KC 32460 (USA), 13 Jul 1973; Columbia PC 32460 (USA), Nov 1973; Columbia JC 32460 (USA), 1980s:
Columbia KC 32460 (USA), 13 Jul 1973:
Columbia KC 32460 (USA) - front with sticker, scan by Hans Seegers |
The first US release of this album, KC 32460, had the album title in relief on the front sleeve and a promotional sticker for Knockin' On Heaven's Door. Gerd Rundel has a copy with a radio station timing strip on the front sleeve and a promo sticker on the rear sleeve. The record has commercial labels as shown, and this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-32460-1E, Side 2 - PBL-32460-1A. |

Columbia KC 32460 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
Columbia KC 32460 (USA),
between Jul and Nov 1973:
The copy of KC 32460 owned by Sergio Mariano Romay must be transitional between the first release shown above and the second US release, PC 32460. It still has the relief on the front sleeve, and the information panel on the left of the rear sleeve is embossed also. The rear sleeve has had two credits for photography removed - see comments at the top of this page and the detail scan. The record has commercial labels as shown, identical to those above, and this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-32460-1E SX, Side 2 – PBL 32460 1C.
Lars M. Banke has a misprinted copy of the second US pressing of KC 32460 with no text on the Side 2 record label - only Columbia and the ring of Columbia logos. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32460 1E, Side 2 - PBL 32460 1C.
Columbia PC 32460 (USA), Nov 1973:
Columbia JC 32460 (USA), 1980s:
Columbia PC 32460 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s
release, but 1970s releases are the same)
The 1980s release comes in a sleeve still with "PC 32460" printed on the spine, but the record labels have "JC 32460". The rear sleeve is different because it has a barcode at top right. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-32460-1AA, Side 2 - PBL 32460-1AC. Sergio Mariano Romay's copy was bought at the "King Karol" record store in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1987. It has a "THE NICE PRICE" sticker on the front of the shrink-wrap as well as a record store price sticker. The record labels are exactly the same as those of Gerd's copy, and the record has the same matrix numbers. On the spine "PC" is in black, so was probably overprinted - the rest of the spine text is brown.
Columbia 19075907251 (USA), 2019:
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Gerd Rundel and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and pictures.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo 180gm vinyl LP, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab MFSL 1-487 (USA), 30 Jun 2020:
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo reel-to reel tape, Columbia 1R1 6107 (USA), Jul 1973:
Columbia 1R1 6107 (USA) - box spine scan by Steven Fant
Columbia 1R1 6107 (USA) - box top scan by Steven Fant
This album was also released on reel-to-reel tape, in 4-track stereo running at 3¾" per second. All tracks are the standard stereo album versions. The tape reel comes in a black card box, hinged on the left, with a white wrap-around label and a separate label on the top of the box.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Steven Fant for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - 8-track stereo tape cartridge, Columbia CA 32460 (USA), Jul 1973:
The track order was rearranged (somewhat bizarrely) to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length:
Program 1: Main Title Theme (Billy); Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
Program 2: Bunkhouse Theme; River Theme; Billy 7
Program 3: Turkey Chase; Final Theme
Program 4: Workin’ For The Law (Cantina Theme); Billy 1; Billy 4.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia KC 32460 (USA for Sweden/Denmark), 1973:
The first copy was bought in
Sweden. There
is only a "CBS" sticker on the front sleeve. The Columbia logos on the spine and
on the rear sleeve plus those on the record labels are not erased or covered
with stickers, as is usually the case with these export albums. Also, it
doesn’t look like that there once were stickers that later have fallen off or
been removed. The sticker in the upper right corner of the rear sleeve is from a
record shop in Malmö. The matrix numbers are Side 1 - PAL 32460 1H, Side
2 - PBL 32460 1A.
The second copy was bought in Denmark. Both are without stickers covering the Columbia logos on the labels. This copy has a "CBS" sticker on the front sleeve plus a red/white sticker with a recommended retail price in Danish Kroner. This sticker is not stuck directly on to the sleeve, but is stuck on to the outer shrink-wrap. "GDC A/S" means "Grammofonselskabs Distributions Centralen Ltd.", the main distributor of records in Denmark in the 1970s. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32460 1D, Side 2 - PAL 32460 1A. The matrix number on Side 1 is very hard to read.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia KC 32460 (USA for Denmark), 1973:
Columbia KC 32460 (USA for Denmark) - detail of rear with two instances
of "Columbia" obscured, scan by Lars M. Banke (1973 release, not
obscured on the alternate copy)
The record has red ring-shaped stickers with the CBS logo at the top in black obscuring the ring of Columbia logos and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32460 1H, Side 2 - PBL 32460 1C.
The second copy, bought in either Sweden or Denmark, is slightly different from the one with the partly removed CBS sticker on the front sleeve but also has red ring-shaped CBS circular stickers on the labels. The "CBS" sticker is intact and "Columbia" has been erased on the sleeve only on the spine. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32460 1H, Side 2 - PAL 32460 1G.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia JC 32460 (USA for Sweden), 1980s:
Columbia JC 32460 (USA for Sweden) - detail of rear with Columbia logos
obscured, scan by Lars M. Banke (1980s release)
This 1980s release (see above) was bought in Sweden. The Columbia logos on the rear sleeve have been obscured with black marker pen. The front Columbia logo is not now obscured, but there is glue remaining from a sticker having been removed, not visible on the scan. The record labels have grey ring-shaped stickers obscuring the ring of Columbia logos round the circumference, although the sticker on Side 1 has been partially removed.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo cassette releases, Columbia CT 32460 (USA), 1973; Columbia PCT 32460 (USA), late 1970s, re-released late 1980s:
Columbia CT 32460
(USA) - end of cassette case with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (1973
release)
Columbia CT 32460
(USA) - top of cassette, scan by Gerd Rundel (1973 release)
The original cassette release CT 32460 has a double-sided insert with details of contemporary Columbia cassette releases. The cassette case has a Columbia sticker on the end. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The catalogue number “32460” is also stamped on the top of the cassette.
The late 1970s cassette release PCT 32460 again has a double-sided insert with details of contemporary Columbia cassette releases including Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1979 on the reverse. The cassette is again light grey with black text, there are no paper labels.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
Bob Dylan - "Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid"/Various Artists - "Oklahoma Crude OST" - radio station LP, American Forces Radio & Television Service RL 9-4/P-14123-24 (USA), 1973:
AFRTS RL 9-4/P-14123 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Paul Prince (Dylan) |
This very rare
radio station LP has a selection of songs from the Pat
Garrett & Billy The Kid album on Side 1, and songs
from the 1973 Oklahoma Crude soundtrack album on Side 2. It came in a plain brown
sleeve. The Dylan songs are: Cantina Theme; Knockin' On Heaven's Door; Main
Title Theme; Turkey Chase; River Theme; Billy 7. For other 1970s albums in the same AFRTS series with Bob Dylan on one side and different artists on the other, see International Albums (Various Artist Compilations) 1970s. The 1978 AFRTS single LP release of Bob Dylan At Budokan (RL 21-9/P-18371-72) is not listed there because all tracks on both sides are by Bob Dylan. For that see the Bob Dylan At Budokan page in this section. For a 1981 AFRTS album with Bob Dylan and Art Garfunkel, see International Albums (Various Artists Compilations) 1980-86. |

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia KC 32460 (Canada), 13 Jul 1973; Columbia WKC 32460/KC 32460 (Canada), mid-1970s; Columbia KC 32460 (Canada), late 1970s:
Columbia KC 32460 (Canada), 13 Jul 1973:
Columbia KC 32460 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay
(1973 release - text on one line, "Columbia Records of Canada Ltd." in overprinted panel
with some text obscured on the right)
The Side 2 US record label above is correct, with Billy 4 shown as track 4 at 4:57 and Billy 7 as track 5 at 2:01. On the Canadian Side 2 label the song order is correct but the track times show the actual lengths. Billy 4 is shown as track 4 at 2:01 (the length of Billy 7, which this track 4 actually is) and Billy 7 is shown as track 5 at 4:57 (the length of Billy 4 which this track 5 actually is)! However, the Canadian release does not have reverse stereo as previously reported on the 1973 page.
Gerd Rundel's original 1973 copy has a dark red circular sticker with black text promoting Knocking On Heaven's Door on the front sleeve. Sergio Mariano Romay's 1973 copy has the original Canadian text on the rear sleeve in one line instead of two. It looks as if it has been overprinted with a panel that hides any previous text (which means this could be a USA sleeve). The record labels are similar to those shown below for the mid-1970s release, with the exception of text "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD." as shown. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32460-1A C2-G, Side 2 - BL-32460-1A C2-G. The spine text (hard to read) is “CK 32460 BOB DYLAN / PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK RECORDING LITHO IN CANADA COLUMBIA STEREO”.

release)
Columbia WKC 32460/KC 32460 (Canada), mid-1970s:
Columbia WKC 32460 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by
Lars M. Banke (mid-1970s release - text on
two lines, "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD." in capitals plus Don
Mills address)
The rear sleeve still has "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.", so it dates from before late 1976. The record labels, however, are anomalous, with "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.", as in the detail scan below, dating from after late 1976. They have a catalogue number of just "KC 32460" and are in a much darker red than the Canadian labels above and below, with the ring of Columbia logos in a brighter yellow. The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 32460 1A, Side 2 - BL 32460 1A.
Columbia KC 32460 (Canada), late 1970s:
Columbia KC 32460 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers
(late
1970s release - text on two lines, "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD."
plus Don Mills address)
Both the rear sleeve and the record labels of the mid-1970s copy now have "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD." instead of the earlier "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.". Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976, so this release is after then.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Gerd Rundel and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia KC 32460 (Canada for export), mid-1970s:
Columbia KC 32460 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke
(second export copy with black marker hiding Columbia logo - "CBS RECORDS CANADA
LTD.")
On the third export copy there are two black circular stickers on the sleeve, one covering the front Columbia logo and the second covering the spine text "LITHO IN CANADA". The record labels have black ring-shaped stickers as the first copy obscuring the ring of Columbia logos. On the fourth export copy there are two gold square stickers on the sleeve, one covering the front Columbia logo and the second covering the spine text "LITHO IN CANADA". The record labels have gold ring-shaped stickers obscuring the ring of Columbia logos.
All four rear sleeves have "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD." instead of the earlier "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.". Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976, so these copies are after then.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and pictures.

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS S 69042 (UK), Jul 1973, re-released 1976-77; CBS 32098 (UK/Ireland), 1984:
CBS S 69042 (UK), Jul 1973:
CBS S 69042 (UK) - front (1973 release, my copy) |
The 1973 UK sleeve was printed by Shorewood Packaging Co., Ltd., England. The CBS UK paper inner sleeve is generic for 1973, and features CBS albums from Loudon Wainwright III, Kris Kristoffersen, Bobby Whitlock and Laura Nyro. The rear inner sleeve shows the then CBS postal address of CBS Records, 28/30 Theobalds Road, London WC1. Manuel García Jara has a copy with a silver foil sticker promoting Knockin' On Heaven's Door and a different CBS UK inner sleeve. For a third example of a CBS inner sleeve for this year, see the entry for the Dylan album in 1973. | ||||

The 1973 record has orange CBS labels and the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69042 A1, Side 2 - S 69042 B1. Manuel García Jara's 1973 record has the same record labels and matrix numbers as my copy.
CBS S 69046 (UK) - Side 1 (my copy - record plays CBS S 69042 Side 1!) |
Manuel also has a second copy (now in my possession - thanks!) with the same sleeve and Side 2 record label as mine, and also the same stamped matrix numbers, but the Side 1 label is from an album by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Between Nothingness And Infinity, CBS S 69046 (Side 1 still plays the correct Dylan tracks). This copy has a different CBS inner sleeve as shown. |

CBS S 69042 (UK), 1976-77:
This cannot be late 1970s because there is no "LC|0149" capsule printed on the labels as on those of the next release and the 1984 labels below.

The third copy shown has a "Nice Price" front sticker and a "Nice Price" paper inner sleeve dated 1984. The record labels now have CBS copyright information at the bottom and "MADE IN ENGLAND" again in the circumference text, otherwise the text layout is again the same. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 32098 A2 69042, Side 2 - CBS 32098 B3.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for scans of the Irish release. It has the UK sleeve without the "Nice Price" sticker and without a "Nice Price" inner sleeve. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with a completely different text layout with centred song titles instead of left aligned. It was manufactured in Ireland, although it confusingly has both "Record mfd. in Ireland" and "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the labels. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 32098 A1 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS 32098 B3 (handwritten).
CBS 32098 (UK), mid 1980s (two variants):
There were two record label variants: the first (Gerd Rundel's copy) has CBS copyright info at the bottom of the labels and "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text; the second (Peter Oudejans' copy) has both "MADE IN ENGLAND" and CBS copyright info in the circumference text and nothing at the bottom of the labels. The record of the first copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 32098 A2 - 69042, Side 2 - CBS 32098 B3.

It looks at first sight that on Side 2 of the record Billy 4 and Billy 7 have been reversed. However, they play in the correct order. Lars M. Banke has listened to Side 2 of this release and confirms that the tracks themselves have not been swapped but the track timings on the label have been! Billy 4 is listed as "2:01", when it's actually 4:57, and Billy 7 is listed as "4:57", when it's actually 2:01, as the sizes of the tracks on the record also indicate. This also seems to be the case for other Dutch pressings of this album, including both 1973 releases above.
CBS 32098 (NL), 1980s (two releases):
CBS 32098 (NL) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1980s release -
Lars' mid-1980s copy is the same with the "LC|0149" code)
There was also a late 1980s release of CBS 32098 with a record with red CBS labels and several sleeve differences: there is no CBS logo and catalogue number at top left of the front sleeve; the “CB|231” printed at top right of the rear sleeve is black in a white solid capsule instead of being white in an open capsule. This is not a sticker even though it looks like one! The rear sleeve also has the CBS logo in the copyright line at the bottom of rear plus “LC|0149” in a capsule at bottom right. The record comes in a “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01 32098 20 2A1 (stamped), Side 2 - 01-32098-B1, 69042-B (handwritten).

CBS 40-32098 (NL), 1980s (two releases):
Paul Shenton has two copies - the outsides of the inserts are identical as are the cassettes, but the inside of the second insert has extra red "Nice Price" and "Prix d'Ami" text at the top and bottom.
Columbia 40-32098 (NL), 1991:
The Columbia cassette release from 1991 has a smaller single folded insert with song details on the inside. It now has a barcode. There is a separate thin paper double-sided folded "Dylan Originals: 30 years on Columbia" "Nice Price" insert with details of Columbia Dylan vinyl and cassette releases on both sides. The cassette was made in Holland and is a slightly darker grey with black text, there are no paper labels.
These cassettes have a changed track running order from the LP releases: Side 1 has Billy 4 instead of River Theme as track 5. while Side 2 has Billy 7 and River Theme as tracks 4 and 5 instead of Billy 4 and Billy 7.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.
"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 69042 (NL for Switzerland), 1973:
This rare Swiss "Club Edition" has a unique front sleeve with a grey border, and was made by CBS Holland for a Swiss record club. The rear sleeve is the same as the regular 1973 Dutch release above (including the text "NL printed in Holland" on the bottom of the rear sleeve as above) and the record inside the sleeve is the original 1973 Dutch pressing with 1960s-style orange CBS labels. Lars M. Banke has noticed that, like all the Dutch sleeves, on the spine “Garrett” is incorrectly spelled as “Garratt”.
Thanks to Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff for information and scans.

CBS S 69042 (Italy) - detail of rear of inner sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara (first and second releases)
The third and fourth releases of this album have orange/yellow CBS labels.
Like the Canadian release above the order of Billy 4 and Billy 7 has been reversed on Side 2 of the record.
The Italian sleeves list the Side 2 songs in the correct order. The correct
Side 2 record label has Billy 4 shown as track 4 at 4:57 and Billy 7 as
track 5 at 2:01. Unlike the Canadian record label above, the Italian Side 2
label lists what's actually on the record - Billy 7 is shown as track 4 at
2:01 (the correct length) and Billy 4 is shown as track 5 at 4:57 (again the
correct length). The labels of the third release say "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS SUGAR", the
fourth release labels just
say "MADE IN ITALY BY CBS" (but still aligned as if "SUGAR"
were present). All releases have a white border on the
rear sleeve, the rear sleeves of the first three releases have two folded-over flaps, missing
from the fourth release. On the third and fourth release Side 2 labels Knockin' On Heaven's Door is
still misspelled "Knokin'".

This 180gm release is part 12 of the Italian De Agostini collection "Dylan Vinyl: The Definitive Collection". The sleeve has "KC 32460" at front top left while the record labels have "PC 32460". The text in the circumference of the record labels says "This record is part of a De Agostini publication. Not to be sold separately".

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40 S 69042 (Italy), 1970s:
These cassette releases were also made in Italy by CBS Sugar and have a short insert with track titles and credits on the inside. The first cassette is black with dark orange CBS paper labels. The second cassette has a lighter orange insert and is light brown with regular orange CBS paper labels. The label text looks identical. Neither have Dolby noise reduction.

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP releases and test pressing, CBS S 69042 (Spain), Nov 1973, re-released 1974, 1980; CBS 32098 (Spain), 1982, re-released 1984, 1985, late 1980s; CBS/Sony 32098 (Spain), 1992:
CBS S 69042 (Spain), Nov 1973 (two releases):
The second 1973 pressing of this album has an identical sleeve to that of the first pressing. The labels have a slight difference from the first pressing: the text "(P) 1973 CBS, Inc" below the "SGAE" logo, present on the first release, is missing here on both sides. Although the vinyl plays correctly, Manuel's extremely rare second pressing copy shown is mislabelled in that it has the Side 2 label on both sides. The previous owner did some corrections with pen: on Side 1, he crossed out the tracklist and "Cara 2" and he added "1" and the text "ver carpeta [see sleeve]"; However, on Side 2 he wrongly crossed out "Cara 2" and the tracklist but then wrote "Cara 2, ver carpeta".

Lars M. Banke has a copy in this 1980 sleeve. However, the record of this copy is not the one shown, but the second 1974 record above.
CBS S 32098 (Spain), 1982:
The 1982 test pressing comes in a plain black card sleeve with a white sticker with blue text "BOB DYLAN CBS 32098". The record has plain white labels with stickers with blue text "BOB DYLAN CBS 32098-A/B" and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 69042 A 0, Side 2 - 69042 B 0.
CBS S 32098 (Spain) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (1982
release, includes new Discos CBS S.A. address, printer information and CBS
logo, 1985 and 1992 releases are the same)
The CBS logo previously on the front sleeve is now on the rear sleeve at bottom right. The sleeve was again printed by Offset ALG, Madrid. The address of Discos CBS S.A. is correctly shown as Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16. The record again has orange/yellow CBS labels with titles in Spanish and English dated 1982 (same as immediately above) and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 69042-AO, Side 2 - 69042-BO.

CBS S 69042 (Spain) - front scan by Lars M. Banke ("Caroche Jeans" release) |
Lars M. Banke has a copy of CBS S 69042 in an unauthorised sleeve that was given away to promote the Spanish Caroche brand of denim jeans in 1984 (after the catalogue number had changed). Full details are here. What is interesting is that the orange/yellow CBS record labels are different from those of the 1974 and 1980 releases above. The date on the record labels to the right of the centre hole is back to "(P) 1973", there is no arrows symbol under "ESTEREO" to the left of the centre hole, and the playing speed of "33⅓" is now on a separate line. Manuel García Jara has a copy in the same sleeve but where the record labels have the new catalogue number of CBS S 32098 as above. |

Lars also has a copy where the record has the same unique labels as the "Caroche" record but which comes in the standard sleeve shown. The printer's credit on the rear is printed vertically and does not have "(E) Madrid 1980", like the two 1974 releases above. The CBS address is again given as "Princesa 1, Madrid-13". The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 32460 1 D, Side 2 - PAL 32460 1 D. Lars' second similar copy has a rear sleeve with one small difference - the printer information printed vertically on the rear sleeve is longer with the 1980 date as on the 1980 rear sleeve above. The record labels have a slight difference, to the left of the centre hole "33⅓" centred under "ESTEREO" instead of being aligned right as in the first two releases. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 69042 AO, Side 2 - 69042 BO.

CBS S 32098 (Spain), late 1980s:
CBS S 32098 (Spain) - detail of rear with sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (late 1980s
release)
The album was released in Spain in the late 1980s with the same sleeve as before, not yet with a barcode on the rear. The first copy shown has two record store stickers on the rear sleeve at top right and bottom right, one with price €9.50 (Lars' late 1980s Spanish copy of Planet Waves has exactly the same two stickers). The record was made by Tecnodisco S.A. of Madrid for Discos CBS and has red CBS labels dated 1982 with titles in Spanish and English.
The second copy shown comes in a sleeve without stickers and has slightly variant red CBS record labels. "SGAE" to the right of the centre hole on both sides is more centred-compared to the first variant. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32098 A, Side 2 - 32098 B.

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40-69042 (Spain), 1974:
This was the first cassette release of this album in Spain. It has a folded insert with details of other CBS cassette releases on the inside. The cassette itself was made by BIAS S.A. in Barcelona (as were other Spanish CBS cassettes of this period) and the insert was printed by Offset ALG in Madrid. The insert is dated "1974" but the cassette labels are dated "1973". The cassette is off-white and has orange CBS paper labels with black text. The song titles are in Spanish only both on the insert and the cassette labels.

CBS 69042 (Greece) - front scan by Hans Seegers (1973 releases) |
Like Dylan (CBS 69049), see the 1973 page, this album was one of the few Bob Dylan releases in Greece during military rule (1968-76), because the material must have been thought non-political. Unlike UK CBS releases, this has dark-red labels rather than orange ones. Although the album is official it was released during the Greek colonels' regime when Bob was banned in Greece and was therefore distributed "underground" by an Athens company called Music-box. The sleeve was printed in Greece by Fotiadis & Ioannidis. "Music-box" is described as "Exclusive Representative of CBS Records in Greece", although on the 1973 Greek release of Nashville Skyline this reads "General Representative of CBS Records in Greece". This information here is in English only, on the 1973 Greek release of Nashville Skyline it is given in English and Greek and the printer's name is missing. The test pressing comes in the same sleeve but has white labels with Greek printed text and handwritten text in red and black. |

CBS 69042 (Greece) - detail of rear, scan by Simon Blokker (1973 commercial release
with Greek bottom text removed)
Simon Blokker has a very strange copy of the Greek commercial release. The front sleeve is as shown but on the rear sleeve it looks like the bottom part has been cleanly cut off, so the line of Greece-specific text is missing. "MADE IN GREECE" has also been roughly obscured on both record labels. The record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69042 A, Side 2 - S 69042 B. This copy may have been sold outside Greece.
CBS 69042 (Greece), mid 1970s:
The mid-1970s Greek release comes in the first release Dutch sleeve above with no symbols at rear top right and no "LC|0149" capsule at rear bottom right. The record was made in Greece and has orange/yellow CBS labels with track timings. This copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 69042 A, Side 2 - S 69042 B.
There may be a late 1970s release where the record labels have the later Greek orange/yellow design without track timings.

The 1973 release of the album, in a full sleeve sized card slipcase obi with price ¥2,100 and stills from the film, is in reversed stereo, therefore counts as a rarity and is listed in 1973. It is extremely collectable because of this special packaging alone. The album has a 12" Japanese language booklet and a printed inner sleeve with a Bob Dylan discography. Promo records have black/white CBS/Sony labels and commercial copies have orange/cream CBS/Sony labels. |

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS SBP 234389 (Australia), Jul 1973, reissued late 1970s:
All the text on the front sleeve of the second 1973 release is positioned slightly higher on the original release, so that the top of the CBS logo at top left front is folded-over. Like all early 1970s CBS Australia sleeves, the front sleeve of the first 1973 release has a heavier laminated finish that wraps round the spine on to the edge of the rear sleeve. The Side 1 label of the copy shown of the first 1973 release, second variant, has a promo stamp "SAMPLE RECORD NOT FOR SALE". The text elements of the two 1973 record label designs are positioned slightly differently.
Stuart Moore has two copies of later releases with orange/yellow record labels, on the first the songs are credited to "Control" and on the second the songs are credited to "Chappell". Both sleeves are identical. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information (the "Chappell" labels). (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

The 1988 cassette release is in the "Select" series, which explains the unique artwork, although not the picture from New Morning, which must be a mistake! It is dated 1988 inside the cassette insert.

The late 1970s release again comes in an identical sleeve, but this time the record has orange/yellow CBS labels with another different text layout. The copy of the late 1970s record shown has the same matrix numbers as the mid-1970s record: Side 1 - SBP 474135 A 9326 700, Side 2 - SBP 474135 B 9327 700.

These rare albums were made in Malaysia by CBS/Sony Records and have the same catalogue number as the US release. They have the same sleeve, but the Singapore copy has handwritten information from R.T.S. (Radio and Television of Singapore) dated 25.9.73 (25 Sep 1973). The Singapore record has plain red labels with three CBS/Sony logos and the Side 2 label has a black R.T.S. stamp, also 25 Sep 1973. This copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32460 I674, Side 2 - BL-32460 I675. The Malaysian record has red CBS/Sony labels with a background of logos and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1- AL-32460 L835, Side 2 - BL-32460 L779.

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The
Kid" - stereo vinyl
LP, CBS ASF 1775
(South Africa/Rhodesia), 1973:
The
first Dylan album to be released in both countries was Bringing
It All Back Home in 1965. From 1965
until New Morning in
1970, Dylan albums sold in Rhodesia were identical to the South African releases
because both the sleeves and labels were printed in South Africa by Interpak
(the first Rhodesian album printed by Belmont Printers was
Blood On The Tracks). From 1971 (see
Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II)
Rhodesian records had sleeves still printed in South Africa by Interpak
(sometimes with an obscured logo) but the labels themselves were now made in
Rhodesia. Those labels always had a lighter orange colour than the South African
labels and they were made of a poorer quality of paper.
CBS ASF 1775 (South Africa), 1973 (three variants):
The South African records have plain orange CBS labels and the first copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF-1775-AL 32460, Side 2 - ASF-1775-BL 32460. The second South African variant has a light brown rear sleeve and the Stereo/CBS logo at top right is in a brown-coloured box. The second variant South Africa record labels have different vertical placement of the four text lines to the right of the centre holes as shown in the detail scans. Lars M. Banke has a third variant that comes in what looks like a second variant sleeve with a brown-coloured Stereo/CBS logo box. The third variant labels have a noticeable difference: the first two variants have “Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid” in upper case/lower case on one line, with "Original Soundtrack Recording" on the second line, and "BOB DYLAN" on the third line; the third variant labels have "PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID" in upper case on two lines, with "BOB DYLAN" on the third line and "Original Soundtrack Recording" on the fourth line below it. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1775 AL32460, Side 2 - ASF 1775 BL32460.
CBS ASF 1775 (Rhodesia), 1973:
The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF-1775 AL-32460 T5-DDL, Side 2 - ASF-1775 BL-32460.

The record has orange/yellow Discos CBS labels and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32460 159.009A, Side 2 - BL-32460 159.009B. The song titles are not translated. The label design is different from that of the Brazilian release of Shot Of Love in 1981, but it is the same as that of the Brazilian release of Infidels in 1983.

The record of the promo copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-32460, Side 2 - BL-32460. Sergio Mariano Romay's promo copy comes in one of the coloured inner sleeves shown above. The sleeves are the same both sides, with cut-outs to show the record labels, and CBS logos but no text.

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The
Kid" - stereo cassette releases, Columbia
580.011 (Argentina), 1982:
These cassette releases are also in the Columbia Argentina "Linea Joven [Youth
Line]" series and use the same front sleeve design as the album. Both
cop[ies shwn have the same front insert.
The insert of these Argentinean cassette releases is a single folded card, blank on the reverse. The off-white cassettes were made in Argentina. They come in black "CBS" cases and have orange Columbia labels with black text.
The "CBS" cases are different - for variant 1 "CBS" is on the right, and for variant 2 "CBS" is on the left. The cassettes themselves are also different - the variant 2 cassette has "CBS" embossed on both sides, missing on the variant 1 cassette. Both Side 1 cassette labels look the same, but the left side of the variant 2 Side 2 label has "2" higher and further to the right than on the variant 1 Side 2 label. Also, "ESTEREO" on the right side of the variant 2 Side 2 label is printed further to the right than it is on the variant 1 Side 2 label. Both these differences are illustrated above.

"Bob Dylan Soundtrack: Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS/Suzy 69042 (Yugoslavia), 1982, re-released 17 Aug 1983 (twice):
The 1982 record has orange/yellow CBS labels and was made by Suzy. This record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 69042-A 1L KK, Side 2 - 69042-B KK. The first 1983 sleeve shown has a price sticker ("MALOPRODAJA" means "RETAIL"). There are two label designs of the 1983 record, both pressed in Yugoslavia by Jugoton of Zagreb (now Croatia). They have orange/yellow CBS labels with a completely different text layout from that of the first release and the first copy shown also has completely different matrix numbers: Side 1 - ULP 1273 A, Side 2 - ULP 1273 B. The labels of the second 1983 copy shown have the same design as the first 1983 record labels, but below the centre hole the spaces between the song title listing, the composer credits and "BIEM/STEMRA" have been removed.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol. One" - 47CD boxed set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; USB stick, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520 (Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK12" plus "DISC 13". The CDs are different in detail, the US Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid CD has catalogue number "88691924312D13", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-13". This album has been remastered, so is the second Dylan album remastered for this project. The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming were released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2013 remastered Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid is SICP 30487, more details will be added when available. |

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding this hybrid SA-CD release, which came in a folded card sleeve and is one of a numbered limited edition of 2,500. This limited edition hybrid SA-CD stereo release of this album is the first time it has been remastered in audiophile quality. It is therefore also listed in 2018.
