This page contains items that aren't eligible for the main Searching For A Gem or International Stereo Releases lists because Bob does not personally perform on them, but are nevertheless of interest to Dylan collectors. This page contains details of covers of Blowin' In The Wind, in some cases with extremely fanciful translations of the title. In countries like France, Germany or Sweden Blowin' In The Wind was always translated, with rare exceptions, as "Écoute Dans Le Vent", "Die Antwort Weiss Ganz Allein Der Wind" or "Vinden Ger Svar". However, in Spanish-speaking countries this song was translated in many different ways. Although the most usual were "La Respuesta Está En El Viento [The Answer Is In The Wind]" or "Soplando En El Viento [Blowing In The Wind]", there were many others, some of them amazing, like "Saber Que Vendrás [To Know He Will Come]", "Saber Que Estárás [To Know You Will Stay]", "Quisiera Saber [I Would Like To Know]", "Solo El Tiempo Puede Contestarnos [Only Time Can Answer Us]" and even "Algo Flota En El Viento [Something Floats In The Wind]"!
Even though there are over 1000 cover versions of this song, I have no details of singles chart success. In the UK Blowin' In The Wind has only entered the singles chart twice, in 1963 for Peter, Paul and Mary (#13) and in 1966 for Stevie Wonder (#36).
Because of the great length of the original page, it has been divided in three parts, of which this is Part 2 (1966-69). Links to Parts 1 and 3 are below, along with a page devoted to the large number of releases by Peter, Paul & Mary containing Blowin' In The Wind:
For the main Honourable Mentions page, click the "Up" link, Honourable Mentions video items are now here. For details of the false rumour that Blowin' In The Wind was really written by Lorre Wyatt, see here.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Various Artists - Spanish EPs with Covers of Blowin' In The Wind, 1966:
Religious connections:
Since the mid 1960s, many young Catholic priests in Spain created arrangements of hits of the moment (The Sounds Of Silence, Help or Blowin' In The Wind) to be sung in the Mass at the church. They used only the music and the lyrics were arranged to suit religious purposes. Today it is usual to hear Blowin' In The Wind at catholic churches, sung by everyone like a hymn. The cover of Blowin' In The Wind as "Saber que vendrás, saber que estarás" is the standard arrangement.
Bob Dylan sang Knockin' On Heaven's Door, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and Forever Young at a Catholic Youth Rally at Bologna, Italy, in 1997, and subsequently met Pope John Paul II. At the 1997 concert, John Paul referred to what is perhaps Dylan's most famous song, Blowing in the Wind, which became an anthem for young people seeking meaning in life in the 1960s. John Paul told the crowd of some 300,000 young Italian Catholics that the answer was indeed "in the wind" - but not in the wind that blew things away, rather "in the wind of the spirit" that would lead them to Christ.

Fiona - "Écoute Dans Le Vent [Listen To The Wind] (Blowin' In The Wind)]" - mono 7" EPs, Tiercé/Panorama 3306 (France)/Panorama 17.360 (France), 1966; Various Artists - "Grosjean Rama", Grosjean Rama Super No. 101 (France), 1966:
The second EP has four tracks, with Blowin' In The Wind as track 1 on the A-side.
"Grosjean Rama" was a collection of 7" singles and EPS from La Vache Grosjean, a French cheese brand. This third EP includes Fiona's cover of Blowin' In The Wind and two tracks by other artists. Blowin' In The Wind is track 2 on the A-side. There were two different rear sleeves, both with the same front sleeve and record.
This is not the same Fiona who appeared with Bob in the 1987 feature film Hearts Of Fire - for the audio soundtrack see 1987, and for VHS and Laserdisc releases, see VHS & DVD 1980s.

GNP Crescendo Records/Discos Tizoc ED-212 (Mexico) - EP front scan by Manuel García Jara |
Billy Lee Riley was a US rockabilly singer who had important hits on Sun Records in the 1950s such as Red Hot. In 1966 he recorded the album Funk Harmonica (GNP Crescendo 2020) including covers of recent hits, mostly "folk-rock" tracks, including Dylan covers Blowin' In The Wind, Mr. Tambourine Man and Like A Rolling Stone. In Mexico two rare EPs from the album were released with an important change in the title, Folk-Rock Harmonica instead of Funk Harmonica. This second EP includes Blowin' In The Wind with its usual Spanish translation of "La Respuesta Está En El Viento [The Answer Is In The Wind]". Track 1 on the A-side is "La Casa Del Sol Nasciente [House Of The Risin' Sun]", recorded by Bob on his first album. The sleeve is the usual Mexican unfolded insert. The rear sleeve of each EP has information about the different types of harmonica used on each track! | |||

Dark Ducks were a male vocal quartet very popular in Japan at the time. Blowin' The Wind on the A-side of this stereo EP is sung in Japanese in what is apparently an accurate translation. The A-side label of this EP appears to have a Japanese language promo stamp at the top.

Gitte Hænning - "Et Sted For Os Selve [There's A Place For Us]"/"Vinden Gi'r Dig Svar [The Wind Gives You The Answer (Blowin' In The Wind)]" - mono 7" single, HMV/EMI X 8474 (Denmark), 1966:
Sven-Ingvars - "Vid Din Sida [By Your Side]" - mono 7" EP, Svensk American SAEP 503 (Sweden), 1966; "Du Ska Tro På Mej [You Must Believe Me]"/"Och Vinden Ger Svar [And The Wind Gives The Answer (Blowin' In The Wind)]" - mono 7" singles, Svensk American 45/120 (Sweden/Norway), 1967:
Two tracks from the EP were released as a 7" single in both Sweden and Norway in 1967. This time Blowin' In The Wind is translated as "Och Vinden Ger Svar [And The Wind Gives The Answer]" on both the single sleeves and the B-side record label. The Swedish single (yellow text) has a regular bag-type sleeve, but there are two different versions of the Norwegian single (red text). The first has just an insert, plain white on the rear, and has the Swedish record. The second comes in a regular bag-type sleeve with a record pressed in Norway, with the boxed "NCB" logo to the left of the centre hole.

Jonathan & Michelle - "Ancora Sempre E Solo Te [Still Always And Only You (Just You)]"/"La Risposta [The Answer (Blowin' In The Wind)]" - mono 7" single, Rifi RFN-NP 16146 (Italy), 1966; mono 7" EP, Marfer MR. 763 (Spain), 1968:
"Jonathan & Michelle" were Maurizio Pracchia from Italy and Michelle Loskady from France. They had a career on the Italian pop scene between 1965 and 1969. The duo did a cover of Blowin' In The Wind in 1966, translated as "La Risposta [The Answer]", on the B-side of this single.
The Italian single sleeve says "Disco + Manifesto [Record + Poster]" but it's not easy to find copies like this that still come with the poster. On the enlarged detail of the front of the single you can see a poster with "NO ONE SINGS DYLAN LIKE DYLAN" on the wall behind Jonathan (an ironic detail to include in the artwork for a Dylan cover). The photo on the poster comes from the same location and has more of the Dylan poster with the same slogan and pictures of Dylan album sleeves on the wall behind Jonathan. The white label promo single comes in the same sleeve as the commercial single. There is a hole punched through both the sleeve and the single.
This performance was also released in Spain on a very rare four-track EP on an obscure label, Marfer. Blowin' In The Wind is misprinted as "Slowin' In The Wind" on the rear sleeve, although it's correct on the B-side label! Ronald Born has a copy of the Spanish EP with the date "20 JUN 1968" stamped on the rear sleeve. For a 1967 Spanish Marfer EP from a different artist, see below.

mini album pictures, scan by Manuel García Jara
This album contains four Dylan covers: Like A Rolling Stone; Positively 4th Street; Blowin' In The Wind and Mr. Tambourine Man.
The US jukebox "Little LP" (EP) is in a white card sleeve with the album artwork pasted on the front. The rear is plain white. It has six tracks from the album including Like A Rolling Stone and Positively 4th Street on the A-side and Blowin' In The Wind on the B-side. Mr. Tambourine Man is missing. It comes with jukebox strips and three mini album pictures - the jukebox strips are missing but the mini album pictures are still present. It's normal for the record itself to be a Columbia sleeve but this also is missing.
The German mono EP has four tracks from the album - it contains their cover of Blowin' In The Wind on the A-side, plus Mr. Tambourine Man is now on the B-side.

Carin Wilson and Pit Peters - "Ich Liebe Leben [I Love Life]"/"Die Antwort Weiß Ganz Allein Der Wind [Only The Wind Knows The Answer (Blowin' In The Wind)]" - 7" mono single, Tempo 986 (West Germany), 1966; 7" mono EP, Tempo EP 4254 (West Germany), 1966:
On this mono 7" single and EP Carin Wilson and Pip Peters sing the same version of Blowin' In The Wind with German lyrics by Hans Bradtke as for the German releases by Peter Paul and Mary, Marlene Dietrich, etc., above. The EP contains the tracks of Tempo singles 985 and 986.
Tempo was founded in Berlin in 1937 as a low budget label. They built a pressing plant in Potsdam-Babelsberg (later used by Amiga). After the war they moved to Bavaria and continued to release versions of national and international hits by nearly unknown artists (some of them with two or more pseudonyms). For example "Man muß schließlich auch mal 'nein' sagen können [One Must Sometimes Finally Say 'No']" was a number 14 hit in the West German charts in 1966 for Gitte (Hænning) the same year she released Blowin' In The Wind in Denmark (see above).

Los 007 were from Venezuela and took their name from "Bond, James Bond". They were a very successful band in their home country of Venezuela and in other countries in Central America. Although Los 007 used the song title "Soplando En El Viento" (one of two standard Spanish titles with "La Respuesta Está En El Viento") this title never appears in the lyrics, instead they sing in the chorus "Dejen el viento soplar [Let the wind blow]". The Venezuelan single shown comes in a plain white sleeve, but may have originally come in a generic Sonus sleeve.

The rear sleeve is the same as the front. Ronald Born's copy has a sticker with text in German "Unverkäufliches Musterplatte [Sample Record Not for Sale] on the B-side. The UK single did not have a picture sleeve. It was re-released in the UK in 2005 on the Blue Beat label with Blowin' In The Wind on the A-side, and this time had a picture sleeve with a front cut-out.

Vanguard Q-37 (Japan) - 7" stereo promo single front scan by Manuel García Jara (variant 1) |
These
stereo singles were given
away with the 2LP compilation Joan Baez
(Vanguard GEM 135-6), exclusively released in Japan in 1973, and made for
Vanguard by King Record Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. There is a great surprise!
This time Blowin' In The Wind is not the live version by Joan previously released in
1967 above! It is in fact the version actually performed by Bob with Joan
Baez just as an accompanying artist, originally
released in 1964 on the Vanguard LP The Newport Folk Festival -
1963: The Evening Concerts Vol. 1,
see
1964!
Full details of these singles are now in
1973. There were two variants of this single, with the same front sleeve, but with different rear sleeves and record labels. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans. |

This could be either of the live versions of Blowin' listed here.

The Rising Sun Trio - "Folk Song Complete Works/Total 20 Songs Recorded" - set of four stereo 7" flexidisc EPs, Music Graph SMG-6018 (Japan), 1967:
This set of four 7” flexidiscs from Japan has a picture of Peter, Paul and Mary on the front sleeve and contains 20 covers of various artists such as Peter, Paul and Mary and The Brothers Four. The cover of Blowin’ In The Wind is track 2 on the B-side of disc 1. The four flexi discs are in a 24 page 7” x 7” paperback book-style cover and the four discs are each in a clear plastic sleeve and the four sleeves are attached to the book-style cover. There is no year of release but the pictures inside this set date from the mid-1960s/late 1960s.
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information that Music Graph specialised in recordings by Japanese artists, and he has found Music Graph SMG-5003 (titled The Best Of Folk Songs), which has ten songs from the SMG-6018 tracklist on the sleeve, performed by a Japanese folk group called The Rising Sun Trio who probably therefore perform all the twenty songs on this release. SMG-6016 was released in Aug 1967, so SMG-6018 might be Oct 1967.
Manuel García Jara has also provided scans of Music Graph SMG-5006 with a photo of Joan Baez on the front. This set has two flexidiscs and a 12 page booklet with a further ten songs covered by the Rising Sun Trio including The Times They are A-Changin'.

The Greenwich Folk Messengers - "Gone The Rainbow" - 7" stereo EP, 20th Century Fox Records SJET-456 (Japan), Jun 1967:
This rare EP includes four tracks from an instrumental album by the Greenwich Folk Messengers called Folk Guitar Super Deluxe which was released in Spain, Israel and Japan only, and also included Mr. Tambourine Man. Their cover of Blowin’ In The Wind is track 2 on the A-side. There was a companion EP, SJET-455, which did not have any Dylan covers. This album and its associated Japanese EPs appear to be the only records by this group ever released!

Ramon Casajoana i Joan Boix [Ramon Casajoana and Joan Boix] - "Escolta-Ho En El Vent [Blowin' In the Wind]" - 7" mono EP releases: Als 4 Vents A4V-6 (Spain), 1967 (several re-releases); TIC 20.006 ET (Spain), 1971:
Als 4 Vents A4V-6 (Spain), 1967 (several re-releases):
This EP was jointly released in 1967 by a book shop (Hogar del Libro, "Home of The Book", based in Barcelona) and a very small label (Als 4 Vents "Four Winds", also from Barcelona; the reference A4V means Als 4 Vents) and distributed by Concentric. It includes an insert with lyrics. The record labels of this original release are yellow. The label of Ronald Born's 1967 copy is different from Manuel's - the most obvious difference is that "Edelton hi-fi" is missing from the left, but the text outside the box at top and right are also different, and Ronald's label has the "SGAE" logo inside the box to the left of the centre hole. The EP was re-pressed several times since 1967 until 1971, with identical record labels but with variants of the front sleeve (see different lettering), of the rear sleeve (very different from the original). Also shown is another rear with a sticker of a shop, Signe, of Mataró, near to Barcelona; and a third variant with a sticker of the distributor Concentric (and, curiously, a sticker from the same Signe shop) and a variant front insert.

Ace Cannon - "The Misty Sax Of Ace Cannon" - stereo 7" jukebox EP, Hi Records/London SBG 49 (USA), 1967:
Hi Records/London SBG 49 (USA) - front of 7" jukebox EP, scan by Manuel García Jara (rear is plain white) |
The sleeve of this jukebox EP (or "Little LP") is made of heavy cardboard with the front design pasted on and is blank on the rear. The front design includes the stereo album front, Hi Records/London SHL 32035. In this case the jukebox strip and mini album pictures normally found with a jukebox EP are missing, but the record still has its original Hi Records/London sleeve. It is apparently quite rare for these EPs to survive intact with the jukebox strips, mini album pics and original sleeves. |

Eastside, West by Eddy Fukano, Dot Records DLP 25866 (USA, 1968, stereo) - front picture from www.disogs.com |
This pack from HMV/RCA Victor Japan includes two flexidiscs and a 20-Page booklet. The cover of Blowin' In The Wind is track 1 on the B-side of disc 1 (FY-5442). According to Kei Masaru the artists' name translates as "Minoru Harada and Wagon Ace", although vocals are by Hideaki "Eddy" Fukano. Eddy Fukano released an album in the USA in 1968 called Eastside, West (Dot Records DLP 25866 (stereo)/Dot Records DLP 3866 (mono), so I am provisionally dating this set as 1968 also. The price was ¥420.

David & Tudor Salisbury Davies - "David A Tudor [David & Tudor]" - 7" mono EP release, Wren Records WRE 1039 (UK), Apr 1968:
Hogiau'r Wyddfa [The Snowdon Lads] - "Hogiau'r Wyddfa" - 7" mono EP releases, Wren Records WRE 1048 (UK), Jun 1968:
There are four record label variants, all in the same sleeve. The original release has white labels and there are three variants of reissue with blue labels. All have similar typefaces with "Made in Wales" in the copyright text in the circumference. There are only two differences:
The song can be found on CD on their 2013 SAIN Records 8CD boxed set "Y Casgliad Llawn [The Complete Collection]"! The group's name there is "Hogia'r Wyddfa". For a 1965 Welsh version of Blowin' In The Wind by Y Meillion [Clover] with the same translation by Rhydwen Williams, see Blowin' In The Wind Covers 1963-65.

The Vergers - "Vinden Ger Svar [The Wind Gives The Answer (Blowin' In The Wind)]"/"Amen, Lovet Och Priset [Amen, Blessing and Glory]" - 7" mono single, Kyrkoton 502 (Sweden), 1968:
There are two variants of the insert for this Swedish EP. The second is also a folded Scandinavian insert but now the front is a slightly darker blue and there are two noticeable differences on the rear: it has the printed (not stamped) extra text "Evangelii Center/Borlänge" at top right and the printer's name at bottom left is now "SIB/ tryck/TUMBA" instead of "AB IRKA - TRYCK".

Waldemar Matuška - "Vitr To Vi [The Wind Knows (Blowin' In The Wind)]"/"Kotva Na Pridi [Anchor At The Bow]" - 7" mono single, Supraphon 0 43 0507 (Czechoslovakia), 1968:
Ronald Born's copy of this Czech 7" mono single comes in a picture sleeve with a generic front used for several Supraphon Waldemar Matuška singles. The rear sleeve is specific to this single. Manuel's copy of this Czech 7" mono single comes in a Supraphon generic sleeve.
Blowin' In The Wind is translated into Czech as "Vitr To Vi [The Wind Knows]" by Ivo Fischer. There was a 1965 Czech release by Judita Čeřovská with Blowin' In The Wind translated as "Jen Vítr To Ví A Mlčí Dál [Only The Wind Knows This And Is Silent Beyond]" with different Czech lyrics by Zdenec Barovec, see Blowin' In The Wind Covers 1963-65. Luis Amilibia: "Chantes Basques Modernes [Modern Basque Songs]" - 4-Track Mono EP, Agorila AG 60-41 (France/Spain), 1968:
Although the artist and his band, Los Naya, were all Spanish, these EPs were recorded in France and published by a small French label, Agorila, based in Bayonne (French Basque Country). This explains the French title of the EP. Chants Basques Modernes means "recent songs sung in Euskera" (usually the Euskera language was used only for Basque traditional songs). The sleeve notes are in Euskera and in French, but the most important point is that this cover of Blowin' In The Wind is not a direct translation from the original English lyrics: it is a translation into Euskera made by Father N. Etxaniz of the French translation by Pierre Dorsey (who is wrongly credited as Pierre Dorsay on the rear sleeve and the Side 1 record label) For this reason, this version has the subtitle "Écoute Dans Le Vent". "Entzun Aizetan [Listening In The Wind]" is the Euskera title on the front and the rear of the sleeve, but on the Side 1 label it is spelled as "Antzun Aisetan" and this performance can be found elsewhere as "Entzun Haizetan"!
There was also an extremely rare copy made in France for Spain. The front sleeve and record labels are identical to the French release, but the rear sleeve has musician credits in Spanish. The sleeve notes are now in Euskera and Spanish instead of in Euskera and French, and the sides are shown as "Anverso [Obverse]" and "Reverso [Reverse]" (unusual Spanish names for Sides 1 and 2) instead of "Face 1" and "Face 2".
For a 1970 cover of Blowin' In The Wind by Juan Migel in Euskera with a different translation by the artist himself see Blowin' In The Wind Covers 1970s Onwards.

The Hollies' decision to make this album
of twelve Dylan covers including their version of Blowin' In The Wind was the reason Graham Nash left
the band! Graham wanted to perform his own material including Marrakesh
Express, which he released with Crosby, Stills and Nash. The album was
released in the USA as
Words And Music By Bob Dylan with a
different front design using the same photo. The album was reissued on CD with the UK title in 1993. It contains two bonus tracks: an alternate take of Blowin' In The Wind and a live version of The Times They Are A-Changin'. Both the obi and the rear insert of the Toshiba-EMI Japanese release are dated "93.3.24" (24 Mar 1993). |

He was the leader of The Bobby Doyle Trio (another member was Kenny Rogers,
the latterly successful country-pop singer). He also recorded many records as
a soloist like this single. In 1972 he did some collaborations with the band
Blood, Sweet & Tears, one member of which had been 1960s-70s Dylan band musician
Al Kooper (see
