This page contains items that aren't eligible for the main
Searching For A
Gem or International Stereo Releases
lists because Bob does not personally perform on them, but
are nevertheless of interest to Dylan collectors. This page contains details of
covers of Blowin' In The Wind by Peter, Paul and Mary. I
have no details of chart success in other countries but in
the USA the cover by Peter, Paul and Mary reached #2 on the Billboard pop chart
on 17
Aug 1963 with
sales exceeding one million copies.
In the UK Peter, Paul and Mary's version spent 16 weeks in the charts, reaching
#13 on 10 Oct 1963 (I bought my copy of the UK EP around then).
Because of the
great length of the original
Blowin' In The Wind covers
page, it has been divided in three parts, as well as this page:

Manuel García Jara (1963) |
The 7" mono EP (or "Little LP"), is a promo only release with six tracks from the
album In The Wind, see below. The record comes in a generic Warner Bros sleeve inside the card sleeve
reproducing the LP sleeve. The B-side of the single was Flora, a song covered by Bob in 1970 during the
New Morning sessions as
Lily Of The West
(R-0097) and released on the 1973 deleted album Dylan, see
1973. This comes from their second LP, Movin', released in Mar 1963.
Also shown are mono and stereo singles in
generic sleeves from 1968 to 1990.

completely different from that of the US and UK releases. |

From 1960 until late 1965 Warner Bros records were made and
distributed in the UK by Decca (part of EMI) and from 1965 until 1971 by Pye
(part of Philips). (You can see
"Decca" or "Pye" in the text at the bottom of generic sleeves of singles and on
the rear sleeves of EPs.) It explains the difference in catalogue numbers and in
the design of labels. In the 1970s Warner Bros records in the UK were released
by Kinney Music, and have "K" catalogue numbers. Both EMI and Philips (later
PolyGram) are now part of Universal. This version of Blowin' In The Wind got to
#13 in the UK singles charts in 1963. |

The single
Blowin' In The Wind/Flora (Warner Bros WB 104) was
released in the UK in Sep 1963 and reissued several times in 1964. There were at
least five variants of this single in generic Warner Bros sleeves: one of these
is a promotional record; the four commercial releases have a slight difference:
three of them have "K / T" below the Warner logo, in slightly different
positions, not present on the first variant label. It was re-released in 1966
with a new catalogue number and orange Warner Bros labels.
Warner Bros WEP 6114/ED 1449-1 (UK), Sep 1963 (three
variants); Warner Bros WEP 600 (UK), 1966:
The UK 7" mono EP Warner Bros WEP 6114 was also released in
Sep 1963 and reissued in 1964. These EPs have identical sleeves with white
border and a laminated front. There were at least three record label variants of the 1963
release: the first release has the text "Recording (C) and first published 1962"
on the right above the catalogue number (this date is incorrect because
Peter, Paul and Mary did not not record Blowin' In The Wind until May 1963,
although the other three tracks on the EP are from 1962).
The other two record label variants have only "(C) & (P) 1962". These two
variants have "M/T" below the Warner Bros logo on the left, in slightly
different positions (a British purchase tax code). As well as the logo of the UK copyright organisation "M.C.P.S."
(Mechanical Copyright Protection Society), the record labels also have the logo
of "NCB", the Nordisk Copyright Bureau, allowing them also to be sold in
Scandinavia (1960s and 1970s Scandinavian Dylan singles also have this logo).
Manuel García Jara has a copy of the first variant
UK EP bought in Norway where the record comes in a generic Warner Bros. sleeve
(mine, bought in Manchester in Sep 1963, is in a plain white inner sleeve). This
sleeve has a barely readable record store stamp, but "LILLEHAMMER" can be made
out.
This UK EP gives the US EP catalogue number as Warner Bros ED 1449-1
on both the front sleeve and the record labels,
but I have not found this release yet, and Manuel García Jara says there was not
a US EP (or "Little LP" as they were called there). The reference "ED 1449-1" is
the same as that of the US release of Peter, Paul and Mary's self-titled debut album from
1962 (W 1449, mono and WS 1449, stereo), from which three of the tracks on the
UK EP were taken. This album (UK
mono catalogue number W 4064) does not include Blowin' In The Wind. The cover
photo was used for several German EPs/singles that do include Blowin' In The
Wind, see below.
Thanks to Bill Hester for information the UK
EP was also sold in New Zealand in early 1964. Manuel García Jara confirms this
with a scan of the rear sleeve of a copy with a sticker from John Court's
department store, Auckland, New Zealand, bought in Jan 1964.
Ronald Born's UK 1966
copy has a new catalogue number, WEP 600 (because of the change in
distribution from Decca to Pye), the front sleeve does not have a white
border and the record has orange Warner Bros labels dated 1964. On the first 1966 labels
the copyright text to the left of the centre hole has lines 2 and 4
indented, and there is a gap between these lines and the catalogue number.
On the second 1966 labels, also dated 1964, the copyright text lines are all left
aligned and there is no gap between these and the catalogue number.

The original UK mono EP above with Blowin' In
The Wind covered by Peter, Paul and Mary was released in Sep 1963 with
catalogue number WEP 6114 and the sub-reference ED 1449-1. As
explained above, "1449" is the catalogue number of the debut album of Peter,
Paul and Mary, not from a US Peter, Paul and Mary EP. Two weeks later, in
Oct 1963, a second mono EP titled Peter, Paul and Mary Vol. 2" was
released in the UK with an identical sleeve but a different tracklist
(without Dylan covers) and catalogue number WEP 6122. Surprisingly, this EP
has the sub-reference ED 1449-3, so it implies that an intermediate
EP with the sub-reference ED 1449-2 should have been released in the
UK. However, such an EP was never released in the
UK, but an EP with the reference ED 1449-2 does exist! Amazingly, it
was released in Australia as shown, but not in the UK. |

There is another important mystery. There was also a UK stereo
version of Peter, Paul & Mary Vol. 2! This
extremely rare EP has the catalogue number WSE 6122 and the sub-reference ESD
1449-3. The sleeve is identical but the record has now golden labels,
used by Warner for Stereo releases. Does a stereo version exist for the EP with
Blowin' In The Wind, which would be WSE 6114?
Manuel García Jara
is still looking for this EP after over fifty years even though he has been told
that WSE 6122 was made only for jukebox use and there never was a stereo version
of WEP 6114.
Warner Bros K 16207 (UK/NL), 1972 (three
variants):
This stereo EP was released in 1972 as part of the Warner Bros "4 FOURS"
series. There was a promo release which came in the commercial sleeve, and
two commercial releases, one with a push-out centre, and one with a solid
centre. Ronald Born has a copy with the same front sleeve and the record
with the push-out centre, but where the sleeve has "NL printed in Holland"
printed vertically at bottom left. Ronald thinks the record was exported to
Holland but the sleeve was printed locally. The cut-outs at the top of the UK
and Dutch rear sleeves are differently shaped!

There were four mono releases of the West German English language
single, all with the same catalogue number, A 5368.
First release (1963):
white front sleeve, rear sleeve dated "1963", "GEMA" and "BIEM" on record
labels. On the variant record label the text to the right of the centre hole
"M. Witmark... / FX 13153/ " is closer to the arrows than on the first copy.
Also, the title track and composer are in a higher position.
Second release (1963 or 1964): black front sleeve, different rear sleeve and "GEMA"
only on record labels. On the variant record label there is less space
between the "GEMA" logo and "RECORDS".
Third release (1965): same sleeve design as the first release but different
text on the rear, dated "1965", same record labels as the second release.
Fourth release (1967-70): again the same sleeve design as the first release,
but this time the rear sleeve is the same as the front. The record has green
Warner Bros/Seven Arts labels.
Warner Bros 16 112 (West Germany), 1978 (two variants), re-released 1982:
West Germany - German Language Releases:
In Sep 1963 Peter,
Paul and Mary visited West Germany and recorded three songs in German at
Warner Bros Studios in Berlin: Die Antwort Weiß Ganz Allein Der Wind [Only
The Wind Knows The Answer (Blowin' In The Wind)] with German lyrics by Hans
Bradtke, Pretty Mary and Puff (The Magic Dragon) - see the
recording studio invoice below right. These new recordings appeared on three
rare 7" releases: a German single; a German EP released by Warner Bros in
conjunction with the Deutsche Schallplatten Club [German Record Club]; and a
Dutch single. The Dutch single has a sleeve like Scandinavian singles of the
time, a folded sheet with the same design on both sides. On the German Record Club
EP only Flora is sung in English and the Blowin' In The Wind song title is
listed incorrectly as "Die Antwort Weiß Nur Der Wind" on the front and rear
of the sleeve but as "Die Antwort Weiß Ganz Allein Der Wind" on the record
A-side. Manuel García Jara has a rare
copy of this German Record Club EP sold in Norway. The
record is the German Club EP without and differences from the one sold in
Germany. The sleeve has the usual Scandinavian design, like a folded insert, and
it has the same front as for the German release, but in a different colour. The
rear sleeve is plain white except for some small text "trykk og lay-out: team
trykk a.s" in Norwegian.

above with the same catalogue number. Ronald Born's copy has a record store
sticker on the rear sleeve and an open centre. The record of Manuel's copy
has a push-out centre. The German language single (A 5560) has Blowin' In

Warner Bros EP 68 (Spain) - 7" mono EP front scan by Manuel García Jara
(Jan 1964) |
Thanks
to Manuel García Jara for scans of two Peter Paul and Mary Spanish Warner Bros EPs that include this
cover. The song title is translated on the 1964 release "EP 68" as "Soplando Al Viento [Blowin'
To
The Wind]" but on the 1966 release "HWB 327-11" it's "Quisiera Saber...
[I Would Like To Know...]"! Warner Bros records were manufactured and
distributed in Spain by RCA up to 1965, after which they were taken over by
Hispavox, so the second EP comes from Hispavox, hence the "HWB" catalogue number.
Ronald Born's 1964 copy of "EP 68" has the same front
sleeve and record labels as Manuel's copy but it has a tiny difference on the
rear sleeve - on Manuel's copy the record sides are "Cara: 1" and "Cara: 2", but
on Ronald's copy they are "Cara 1a:" and "Cara 2a:".

This is the very first Peter Paul and Mary single with
Blowin' In The Wind
in Japan, made by Toshiba Records. First copies were released with red vinyl
as shown but black vinyl copies also exist. The sleeve is a folded sheet and
the record comes in a Warner Bros sleeve. The inside of the folded sheet has
the lyrics. On the back it ends with the rest of the "Flora" lyrics. The
printed price on the back is only ¥330.
Warner Bros/Toshiba BR 1487 (Japan), 1964
(stereo 7" single, two releases), re-released 1969:
There were two variants of the original single: one with red
vinyl and another with black vinyl, both with red Warner Bros labels. The red
vinyl single was first (It has "27" in addition to the matrix numbers; the black
vinyl single has "28"). This single was reissued in 1969, again with a similar
unfolded insert. This time the front has a slight difference: now the price is
¥400. The rear of this insert is different but the
inside is again the same. It includes a different Toshiba inner sleeve and the
record labels have now the new green "Seven Arts" design of labels.
Warner Bros/Toshiba BR 4017 (Japan), 1964
(stereo 7" EP, three releases):
This was
the first Japanese EP with Blowin' In The Wind covered by Peter Paul and
Mary. It was again made by Toshiba and cost
¥500 (the price this time is on the rear sleeve). There were
again two variants of the record: first with red
vinyl and later with black vinyl, both with black "WARNER BROS COMPACT" labels.
Blowin' In The Wind is track
1 on the B-side; the EP also includes Don't Think Twice, It's All Right,
track 2 on the B-side. As usual in Japanese EPs, it has a regular sleeve but
not a generic inner sleeve. It includes a six-page insert. Ronald Born's
copy has the red vinyl record, but the rear sleeve and the rear of the
six-page insert are different from those of both Manuel's copies - this may
be the first release. The rear of the insert of Ronald's copy lists two
Warner Bros/Toshiba Japan EPs and eight singles, although not 7B-26 above,
all priced at ¥330
(the 1963 price). The
rear of the inserts of Manuel's copies just have a Warner Bros logo.
Warner Bros/Toshiba BP 4317-4318 (Japan), 1965
(stereo 7" 2EP set, two releases):
The set was
again
made by Toshiba for Warner Bros Records, this time as part of their "Compact DeLuxe
Best 8" series, which also included releases on Capitol Records
like the 1965 Kingston Trio 2EP
set below.
There is a 4-page folded insert
with lyrics. The Times They Are
A-Changin' is track 1 on the A-side of the first EP (BP 4317), Blowin' In The Wind
is track 1 on the B-side of the same EP and Don't Think Twice It's All Right is
track 2 on the A-side of the second EP (BP
4318).
There were two record label variants, on the first one "STEREO" is without
arrows, on the second variant "STEREO" is in smaller text with arrows on
either side. Both sets of records came in the same gatefold sleeve.

Warner Bros first released records in Japan through Toshiba
Records. The Warner Bros.-Pioneer Corporation was founded in 1970, and the company
name was changed to Warner-Pioneer Corporation in 1972. This Warner Bros.-Pioneer Corporation
single unusually comes in a bag-type sleeve instead of a generic sleeve with
a folded insert, and the record has green Warner Bros labels similar to
those of the previous entry. The single is still priced at
¥400. |

This single with two Dylan
covers was released in 1983, now made by Warner-Pioneer. It now has a single insert,
not a regular sleeve, and comes in a blue/white Warner-Pioneer generic sleeve.
The front of the insert reproduces the artwork of Peter Paul and Mary's 1963
Moving album, used
again for a 1983 Japanese compilation entitled The Best
Collection, from which these two
tracks were taken. The record labels now have the 1980s Warner Bros design with
parallel lines on a beige background and are dated 1983. The price
is now
¥700!

This mono EP,
In The Wind,
originally released in late 1963, includes Blowin' In The Wind on the A-side and
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right on the B-side. There are three variants of
this release with the same laminated front for all of them and two folded-over
flaps on the rear. Only the first variant was released in 1963; the other two
variants must have been released between 1964 and 1965.
Variant 1 was the first and
the rarest: Rear sleeve - the text "High Fidelity" below the Warner logo is
centred. Record labels - Side 1 has the Essex logo and the text "Warner Bros.
Control"; Side 2 has both Essex and Allan's logos.
Variant 2: Rear sleeve same
as Variant 1. Record labels - Sides 1 and 2 have only the Allan's logo.
Variant 3: Rear sleeve - the
text "High Fidelity" below the Warner logo is now right aligned. record labels -
both sides have only the Allan's logo but it is bigger than in previous
variants, Side 1 has the tracklist on three lines, instead of four lines as
Variants 1 and 2.
This EP was reissued in 1966.
It has the same catalogue number, laminated front sleeve and two folded-over
flaps on the rear, but the rear is different from the two 1963 variants. The
text "High Fidelity" is again centred, and the copyright text at the bottom is
different. The record now has orange Warner Bros labels.
For
Warner Bros ED 1449-2, a 1963 mono EP released in Australia that did not have
any Dylan covers, but is still of interest, see above.

labels.

(Australia), 1980s:
Warner Bros

- 7" stereo single
front scan by Ronald Born |
This 1980s 7" stereo single has two tracks taken from a different
compilation album Their Greatest Hits, listed as Warner Bros BS 2552.
This appears to be a mistake, Warner Bros BS 2552 was the 1970 compilation
album 10 Years Together: The Best Of Peter, Paul & Mary. The record
now has the replacement Warner Bros labels, plain beige with parallel lines,
introduced in 1980,
so definitely does not date from 1970.
Blowin In The Wind is on the B-side. Manuel
García Jara
has a copy which comes in a generic WEA sleeve. |

The first variant has a white Warner Bros logo,
white text in the circumference and the EP title on two lines; the second has a
white Warner Bros logo, white text in the circumference and the EP title on one
line; the third has a black Warner Bros logo, black text in the circumference,
the EP title on one line and one song title above the centre hole. The
third variant record label shown has a sticker from "John Court's Record Bar,
Queen Street". (John Court's was a department store in Auckland, New Zealand,
that closed in 1972.)
Unlike the Australian version, this EP includes
only Blowin' In The Wind but not Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.

also released in New Zealand with tracks taken from the compilation album
Best Of Peter, Paul & Mary.
This New Zealand release has the same tracklist and laminated front as the
Australian EP, but a different catalogue number. The front looks identical but
there is no catalogue number above the Warner Bros logo at top right; the rear
has two folded-over flaps and a very different design. The record still has
green Warner Bros labels.

Russian Flexidisc Release, 1970:
Krugozor" No. 3, 1970 (Russia), front
picture from Ronald Born |
"Krugozor [Outlook]" was a monthly magazine
in a 7" format from the former Soviet Union and 6 flexidiscs were included
in each issue. In "Krugozor" No.3 from 1970 on the back of the third
flexidisc (side 6) there is a Russian report about the American civil rights
movement. This includes Martin Luther King speaking at the March on
Washington 1963, Pete Seeger singing This Land Is Your Land (all excerpts
only), Bob Dylan is mentioned, and at the end Peter, Paul and Mary sing
Blowin' In The Wind interrupted by a Russian commentary. You don't need to
cut out the flexidisc because there is a hole in the middle of the magazine
so that you can play each side of each flexidisc together with the complete
magazine on your turntable and keep the magazine intact. For another "Krugozor"
flexidisc from 1973 with a cover of Blowin' In The Wind by Sonya Salvis, see
below |
