Original US stereo 2LP set, Columbia C2S 841, 20 Jun
1966? Thanks to Tim Dunn for information about an article by
Carol Deck, "Bob Dylan Gets Into The Album Controversy Too", in a magazine
called KRLA BEAT, 16 Jul 1966, p.1 & p.4 (KRLA at that time was a popular
Top 40 Southern California AM radio station which published KRLA BEAT as, maybe,
the first American paper to focus on rock and popular music and culture. It
looks to have generally a weekly release): Anthony Bush has found an ad for Blonde On Blonde in the "San Francisco Examiner" dated 16 Jun 1966, which supports the 20 June date. However, Chris Warner recollects buying his copy in Cambridge, MA, in May 1966 and adds "The other interesting thing about the album is that the LPs had clear plastic inner sleeves with a perforated top edge. You had to pull off a little quarter inch strip of plastic above the perforation. And then you could get your record out. This may have been for the initial pressings because I never saw other peoples' Blonde on Blonde in plastic inner sleeves. In later years I came across Columbia classical LPs with the plastic bags, but I don't recall any other Columbia pop releases with the plastic inner sleeves." Pete Teroso of Burbank, CA, is also certain that the album was indeed on sale in California in late May 1966 (these may have been advance copies, as could have been the copy in Massachusetts). As regards, plastic inner sleeves, Victoria Stafford from Oakland, CA, has a stereo copy of Bob Dylan (second release, fourth variant) in a sealed shaped plastic bag, so they were used for other releases. Thanks to Michael Fremer of www.analogplanet.com and "Stereophile" magazine for confirming that these sealed plastic inner bags were used by Columbia for classical, jazz and rock releases through 1965 and 1966. For example, the first two Byrds albums were issued with the sealed plastic inner sleeve with perforations as well as Blonde On Blonde. Douglas from Birmingham, MI, says: "I distinctly remember going into Marty's Record shop in Birmingham, Michigan, in mid to late May 1966 after school and being shown the new Dylan release. Mr Throop, the owner of this mom and pop store (at which I worked in the previous summer) marvelled at the fact that it was a 2LP album. Also the fact that one song took an ENTIRE side. The time frame was that school had not let out for the summer and in those days was that after the first week of June. I know it was May. However maybe some places got it sooner before there was a "recall". I remember this despite not being a big Dylan fan …though I did appreciate him." |

The gatefold sleeve does not have Bob's name or the album title on the front, just on the spine. The front photograph is by Jerry Schatzberg, about which Jerry says: "I wanted to find an interesting location out of the studio. We went to the west side, where the Chelsea Art galleries are now. At the time it was the meat-packing district of New York and I liked the look of it. It was freezing and I was very cold. The frame he chose for the cover is blurred and out of focus. Of course everyone was trying to interpret the meaning, saying it must represent getting high or an LSD trip. It was none of the above; we were just cold and the two of us were shivering. There were other images that were sharp and in focus, but to his credit, Dylan liked that photograph.". Thanks to Jack from Canada for reminding me that Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again was listed as either "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With The" or "Memphis Blues Again" on the inner sleeve and the Side 2 record label on the various releases listed. In the UK the title was misprinted as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With Thee"! The song was first titled correctly on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II in 1971, and then on late 1970s copies of Blonde On Blonde. The US and UK songbooks shown below both have the song title as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With The". Thanks to Harald Sigvartsen for pointing out that One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) is just titled as "One Of Us Must Know" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve. This shortened title is used on both the UK Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits compilation and the Dutch Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2. |

information that this album was not released in Yugoslavia, Mexico, Brazil or
Argentina, unlike other 1960s Dylan albums.
This title is now one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo and 5.1 surround sound on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). The version of the album now released, and therefore assuming the position as the "standard" release, is the 1999 mix by Michael Brauer, first released on an SA-CD-only disc in the USA and Japan. The new release splits the album back into its two original discs, because the length of the two discs combined meant that there was too much material to fit the three separate versions (CD stereo, SA-CD stereo and SA-CD 5.1 surround sound) on a single SA-CD disc.

Percy Song says: "On the right is an advert from Page 5 of "On The Tracks" magazine Issue #4 (dated Fall 1994) for eight mono Blonde on Blonde acetates being sold by "Rolling Tomes", the commercial arm of "On The Tracks". These acetates were "from the estate of Albert Grossman". On the left is a photo of the magazine opened at Pages 4-5. Unfortunately there isn't a definitive list of
tracks, although we can see that the 10" single-sided acetate is a version
of Visions of Johanna and one other disc has several Blonde on Blonde
songs as detailed on a Transco sleeve labelled "Side 3". One must assume, I
suppose, that these discs were, much like the West Houston Street Acetates,
a stab at sequencing the album, and that they were put together by Bob
Johnston in 1966. |

This is the original stereo pressing of the
album that was replaced by a revised mix in 1968. It has the original nine photo
inside gatefold sleeve design. The front of the first release has a white
sticker advertising the album's tracks Rainy Day Women #12 & 25 plus I
Want You. Gerd Rundel has a first release copy of the album with demonstration stickers on the Side 2 and 3 record labels. On these labels "BLONDE ON BLONDE" is above "BOB DYLAN" and "NONBREAKABLE" is printed to the left of the centre hole. On Side 2 track 2 is listed as "MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN". The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-2A, Side 2 - XSM113766-3A, Side 3 - XSM113767-2D, Side 4 - XSM113768-2H. Stefan Hollstein has a copy with the same sleeve and record labels where the records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-2A, Side 2 - XSM113766-2D (the only difference from Gerd's first release copy), Side 3 - XSM113767-2D, Side 4 - XSM113768-2H. |

Lance Jacobs has a first release/second pressing copy of C2S 841. Inside the gatefold sleeve there are the nine photos including Claudia Cardinale. The records have first issue stereo labels with “NONBREAKABLE” present on all four labels. The matrix numbers are: Side 1: XSM-113765-2C, Side 2: XSM-113766-2F, Side 3: XSM-11367-2C, Side 4: XSM-11368-2F.

Steven Fant has a stereo copy of Blonde On Blonde with "Columbia C2L 41" on the sleeve (the mono catalogue number) and "Columbia C2S 841" on the records. There is a Stereo sticker on the spine. Inside the gatefold sleeve there are the nine photos, "Memphis Blues Again" and song titles and musician credits. The records have first issue stereo labels with “NONBREAKABLE” missing from all four labels. Side 2 has “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The” and “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” in lower case. Jürg Ambühl also has a copy with "NONBREAKABLE" missing from the labels. The records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765 - 3A (stamped), Side 2 - XSM113766 - 3A (stamped), Side 3 - XSM113767 - 3A (handwritten - the space between the last song and the paper is very small so there is almost not enough space for a stamped matrix number), Side 4 - XSM113768 - 2C (stamped). On the opposite side to the stamped matrix number there is a handwritten "C3".

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a copy of the release with "NONBREAKABLE" missing from the labels where the Side 3 label has the black text printed upside down. The other three labels are printed correctly. This copy has the revised 7-photo layout on the inside of the gatefold sleeve. |
The photo above submitted by Bruce from the USA shows a label with white "STEREO"/"360° SOUND"/arrows logo and Bob's name above the album title. The other scans here have Bob's name below the album title. Track 2 is mistitled "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" (as Jason Spradlin's copy) and the title of track 3 is lower case. Peter Stone Brown says that the first release of the album had track 2 as "Memphis Blues Again" - this may be the second US release, although Hans Seegers thinks this copy may come from Canada.
Robert Kornovich has several copies of the US stereo pressing with no song titles on the inside of the gatefold. This appears to be deliberate, not a misprint. The records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-3A, Side 2 - XSM113766-3A, Side 3 - XSM113767-2D, Side 2 - XSM113768-2C. The gatefold is of the type where the artwork is on paper pasted on to card, not printed onto white card directly. The records are in generic square paper inner sleeves (not semi-circular clear plastic sleeves as with earlier copies).

The first of these first release copies was bought in Denmark. There is a faded grey "CBS" sticker on the front of the gatefold sleeve. The record labels of tjhe first copy used to have shaped "CBS" stickers covering the "Columbia" name, but you can see where these have been removed. Side 1 of a copy of Nashville Skyline bought in Sweden is shown to illustrate the shape of these stickers (that copy also has a similar grey "CBS" sticker on the front sleeve). As Gerd Rundel's first release copy above, the Side 2 record label has the track 2 name as "MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN", and "Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat" is in upper/lower case. All record labels have "NONBREAKABLE". The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-2A, Side 2 - XSM113766-3A, Side 3 - XSM113767-2D, Side 4 - XSM113768-2H (exactly the same as Gerd's first release copy above). |

Michel Pomarede has found an export copy in France that also has a "CBS" sticker on the front sleeve. The record labels are the same as those of the first copy but this time each has a different half ring-shaped sticker with three "CBS" logos plus a small "CBS" sticker covering "Columbia" in the copyright text at the bottom. Lars M. Banke has now acquired this album. There are also two "CBS" stickers covering "Columbia" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve. The records of this copy have different stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-2A, Side 2 - XSM113766-2D, Side 3 - XSM113767-2D, Side 4 - XSM113768-2H.

Henry V. Bell has a copy of the second stereo mix of this album with red Columbia labels with the "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos in white, and matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113765-3D, Side 2 - XSM 113766-3D, Side 3 - XSM 113767-3D, Side 4 - XSM 113768-2K.
Mick Robinson has a copy released in 1972 with the 1970s style red record
labels with the ring of Columbia logos. The inside of the gatefold sleeve again
has the "Memphis Blues Again" song title, see the 1966 release above.
The
Side 2 label again has the song title incorrect, as just
"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" on one
line.

records of Mick's copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113765-3D, Side 2 - 113766-3D, Side

Peter Tesoro has a later copy with a light brown outer sleeve similar to the picture on left which has "Memphis Blues Again" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve. The Side 2 label has track 2 correctly listed on two lines (not yet illustrated here) with "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" on the first line, and "Memphis Blues Again" on the second line. The record matrix numbers are: Side 1 - XSM 113765-4G (stamped), Side 2 - 113766-4E (stamped), Side 3 - 113767-4J (handwritten), Side 4 - 113768-3AC (handwritten). Manuel García Jara has a copy from the late 1970s with "C2S 841" on the outside of the sleeve and record labels, but with a sticker hiding this catalogue number over the spine and the top right corner of the rear sleeve; this sticker has a barcode and the new catalogue number "CG 841". The record matrix number are: Side 1 - XSM 113765-4G (stamped), Side 2 - 113766-4E (stamped), Side 3 - 113767-4J (handwritten), Side 4 - 113768 G3B (handwritten). The Side 1 and Side 3 record labels have an inverted triangle to the left of the centre hole, first introduced with Biograph in 1985, so this release is from 1985 or later. The Side 2 record label has “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again” correctly listed over two lines. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-4G (stamped), Side 2 - XSM 113766-4H (handwritten), Side 3 - XSM 113767-G-4A (handwritten), Side 4 - XSM113768-3AA (stamped).

playing at 45RPM, which means that it is a 3LP set in a box! There
is also a Mobile Fidelity hybrid SA-CD release of this album in stereo only,
not 5.1 surround sound as on the 2003 Columbia hybrid SA-CD release. This
set was scheduled to be released in Dec 2011, but did not appear until 18
Dec 2012.

Gerd Rundel's test pressing was made by RTI (Record Technology Inc.) for Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Each record comes in a plain white sleeve with the pressing date and catalogue number stamped at front top right. Sides 1, 3 and 5 have generic RTI labels and are dated 30 Aug 2012 while Sides 2, 4 and 6 have plain white labels. The catalogue number "3-45009 is wrongly shown as "3-450009" on the sleeves and on the record labels, but the matrix numbers are correct. The test pressing records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 3-45009 A2 plus 20704.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 3-45009 B2 plus 20704.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 3 - MFSL 3-45009 C2 plus 20704.3 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 4 - MFSL 3-45009 D2 plus 20704.4 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 5 - MFSL 3-45009 E2 plus 20704.5 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 6 - MFSL 3-45009 F2 plus 20704.6 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite. This copy has the replacement inner sleeve design without Claudia Cardinale and the later style red record labels with the Columbia logo in a ring. The inside of the gatefold sleeve again has the "Memphis Blues Again" song title, see the 1966 release above. The record labels have white ring-shaped stickers covering the Columbia logos with "C.B.S." in black. On Side 2 Track 2 is mistitled "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" and the title of track 3 is lower case. The copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-4D, Side 2 - XSM113766-4C, Side 3 - XSM113767-3D, Side 4 - XSM113768-3G. Charlie Pritchard used to work in the HMV record shop in London and has a late 1970s release of C2S 841 stickered for sale in the UK, where Columbia traded as CBS. Lars M. Banke has an interesting U.S. export copy to Sweden with white ring-shaped “Akademibokhandeln” stickers on the labels covering the ring of Columbia logos. Akademibokhandeln [Academic Book Shop] is the biggest chain of book shops in Sweden. “Columbia” is obscured with a black pen at the bottom of the inner sleeve, which is the replacement design without Claudia Cardinale. It looks like there has been a sticker covering the Columbia logo in the upper left corner on the front of the gatefold sleeve. On the Side 2 record label Track 2 is again mistitled "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" and the title of track 3 is lower case. The record labels of this copy bought in Germany have blue stickers with text in German "Aus warenrechtlichen Gründen muss dieses Etikett überklebt werden [For copyright reasons this label must be stickered over]". The previous owner of the set has tried to remove the Side 1 label and has written the song titles on the Side 2 label with gold marker pen! The stickers on Sides 3 and 4 are unmarked. The outside of the gatefold sleeve has a barcode like the late 1970s US release above, although it is printed, not a sticker. The inside of the gatefold sleeve has the replacement design. Rene Jørgensen also has copies of albums by other artists bought in Denmark with the same blue stickers. Every instant of the name "Columbia" is also blacked out on the front and rear sleeves. The album shown by The Chimes also has a front sticker with "US Pressung [US Pressing]". |

This release contains a rarity in that Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands is shortened, and is also listed in 1974. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is on the fourth track with Sad Eyed Lady of The Lowlands, and mistitled "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" (repeating a mistake from the first US release). It comes in a slipcase with a black cartridge with two labels (the rear label folds over the end as on two of the three Bringing It All Back Home examples on that album's page). The alternate release comes in the same slipcase but has a red tape cartridge made by Audiopak. This time the cartridge has three separate labels.

The inserts of these "2 on 1" cassettes release have barcodes and are blank on the reverse. The 1986 cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The original cassette release is listed on the cassettes as Columbia 16 20 0012 - see above. The late 1980s release has what looks like the same insert but has a transparent smoked grey cassette with white text. There are two mistakes in the tracklisting on Side 1: Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is followed by "704" and Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine is followed by "322" - these are most probably track timings (7:04 and 3:22) that should have been removed. There are also three big mistakes in the tracklisting on Side 2: Visions Of Johanna is listed as "Visions Of Jahanna"; 4th Time Around on Side 1 is listed again as "Fourth Time Around" (it only plays on Side 1); and Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands is listed twice, the second time as "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowl" (it only plays once, as expected).

Derek Linfield has a Canadian copy with a printed panel on the top right with the words "CONTAINS 2 RECORDS/ CONTIENT 2 DISQUES/ SPECIAL LOW PRICE". This is a Canadian re-release that used the original records in a reprinted sleeve. One record label has CS 9316 as the catalogue number, the other has both C2S 841 and CS 9317 (the same as Robert Kornovich's later copy).
Robert says of the Canadian releases: "The matrix numbers of my copy are XSM113765-1A, XSM113766-1A, XSM113767-1C, and XSM113768-1C. You will notice in the attached pictures that the centre label on each side has some differences from the US pressings. First, "BOB DYLAN" appears above "BLONDE ON BLONDE" instead of the reverse. The record is labelled towards the bottom as having been manufactured in Canada. The timing of the songs are indicated on the first record, but not the second! In fact, the timing was omitted on "One of Us Must Know", while retained on the rest of the tracks.
The outside of the sleeve is just like the US stereo release, except for "BLONDE ON BLONDE" is further down the spine, and is in black letters. The inside is also like the first US stereo pressing (with the girl photos), but looks like the typesetting is different from the US releases, even though the wording is the same.
The album contains the first (or original) stereo mix. However, the quality of the pressing is the best I have ever heard for the vinyl stereo version of this album. The sound is very clean, with less compression and lots of detail, and stronger bass than my other stereo copies. It almost sounds as good as a half-speed mastered album, but I assume it is really due to good EQing by the Canadian lacquer cutters, and the possibility I have one of the first records pressed from a well-made stamper. Even the usually-distorted track "One of Us Must Know" is as clean as my Brauer-mixed CD.
The only song that sounds different enough to question the mix used is "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands". Roger might be able to comment as to whether or not this is a new mix, or just a result of a better sounding pressing. This mix does have the "splice" to correct the flubbed line by Dylan. However, almost every instrument is placed in the center behind Dylan's vocal, with only the organ and drums appearing panned to the right channel. The result is a mush of noise behind Dylan and his harmonica with the drums and organ the only indication this is a stereo recording. The drums are very detailed, as is Dylan's voice. However, there is very little bass, and the mix is heavy towards the right side, as if the balance control was off on my stereo.
Despite moderate wear and slight surface noise, this pressing outshines any CD copy I have."

On the first 1970s first release variant the outside gatefold sleeve has no printed panel in the upper right hand corner and no Canadian copyright line at the bottom. This first gatefold sleeve is unusual because the sleeve opens at the inside centre (see scan) and at the outside edges (like the French mono copy of Blonde On Blonde). The small “C2S 841” text is missing from the bottom right of the inside gatefold sleeve.
The second 1970s first release variant gatefold sleeve has several differences from the first: there is a printed panel in the upper right of the front with text in English and French "CONTAINS 2 RECORDS/ CONTIENT 2 DISQUES/ SPECIAL LOW PRICE"; the rear sleeve has “COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.” copyright line on the bottom; there are now openings at either end but no centre openings. Otherwise the inside of the second gatefold sleeve is the same as the first with track 2 on Side 2 listed as “Memphis Blues Again” and the small “C2S 841” text missing.

The records in both variant sleeves are the same. The record company on the record labels is "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD." on all four labels. The Side 1 and Side 2 record labels have only the catalogue number “CS 9316” to the left of the centre hole. The Side 2 record label has the incorrect song title “STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE” on one line. The Side 3 and Side 4 record labels with “C2S 841” and “CS 9317” to the left of the centre hole are the same as for the second 1970s release, except for the record company name change. The records of the first variant copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765-1A (stamped), Side 2 - XSM113766-1A (stamped), Side 3 - XSM-113767-1A (handwritten), Side 4 - XSM-113768-1A (handwritten). These second 1970s releases again come with the original nine photo inside gatefold sleeve with track 2 on Side 2 listed as “Memphis Blues Again”. The gatefold sleeve has the same front as the first 1970s release variant 2 with printed text at top right, but the copyright text at the bottom of the rear sleeve is different. Now the rear sleeve and record labels have text showing the album was manufactured by “CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.” - the name change took place in late 1976. The 1970s-style record labels have the ring of Columbia logos round the circumference.
Simon Blokker's second 1970s release variant 1 gatefold sleeve is the same as shown for Gerd Rundel's copy except for the missing catalogue number on the inside sleeve. All record labels have "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD", but the Side 2 label still has “STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE” on one line with "MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN" missing. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 -XSM-113765-1B-2HD, Side 2 - XSM-113766-1A-2-G, Side 3 - XSM-113767-1A 2 H,K,D,A, Side 4 - XSM-113768-1A (2) 2-G.
On Gerd Rundel's variant 2 Side 2 label “STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN” is now correctly written and listed over two lines. As with the records in the first 1970s releases above, the Side 1 and Side 2 labels have track timings but they are missing on the Side 3 and Side 4 labels. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-113765 1A2HZ, Side 2 - XSM-113766-1A-2-G, Side 3 - XSM-113767-1B-2HDZ:, Side 4 - XSM-113768-1A.

Columbia traded as CBS in countries where the Columbia trade name was then owned by EMI (or by RCA in Spain). Therefore records exported outside North America had to have the Columbia logos obscured. Lars M. Banke has a Canadian copy bought in Sweden with black ring-shaped stickers covering the ring of Columbia logos on the record labels. This appears to be the same as Robert Kornovich's later copy listed above. |

One record label has CS 9316 as the catalogue number, the other has both C2S 841 and CS 9317. The Columbia logos on the sleeve have not been obscured. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM113765 (stamped, suffix not readable), Side 2 - XSM113766-1A 2G (stamped), Side 3 - XSM-113767-1A (handwritten), Side 4 - XSM-113768-1A (handwritten).
Lars M. Banke also has a copy of the 1970s Canadian release C2S 841 bought in Sweden. It has the Columbia name and logos on the outside of the gatefold sleeve and record labels obscured with black stickers. The record labels again have black ring-shaped stickers obscuring the Columbia logos round the circumference. This copy has the sleeve and records of the second 1970s Canadian release above. The record pf this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113765 1B 2 HB, Side 2 - XSM113766 1 A 2 G, Side 3 - XSM 113767 1A 2 H, K, D, A, Side 4 - XSM 113768 1A 2G. The matrix numbers are very hard to read.
Lars M. Banke also has a third copy of the 1970s Canadian release C2S 841, also bought in Sweden. It has the Columbia name and logos on the outside and inside of the gatefold sleeve and record labels obscured. The Columbia information on the outside and inside of the gatefold sleeve has been obscured with black marker pen. The record labels have white ring-shaped stickers obscuring the Columbia logos round the circumference. This copy again has the sleeve and records of the second 1970s Canadian release above.

This cassette was found online by Gerd Rundel. It was again manufactured by Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. and has the same catalogue number as the two releases above. The insert is different on the front because the text "A product of Columbia Records of Canada, 1121 Leslie St., Don Mills, Ontario, M3C 2J9" is missing as are the words "DOUBLE TAPE VALUE" on the spine. The cassette is off-white with stained white Columbia labels. "MADE IN CANADA" is embossed on both sides. |

The inserts of these 1980s single cassette releases have the track listing inside. The cassette is transparent smoked grey with silver text, there are no paper labels. Gerd Rundel also has scans of a shorter cassette insert, also with the track listing inside, but with the CrO2 (Chromium Dioxide) logo. I don't have details of the cassette that goes with this insert. |

The first copy shown with a blue cover is a 36-page guitar and harmonica edition, similar to the US songbook above. Stuart Moore's copy was bought in Australia and has a price sticker for $3.50 Australian dollars. The second book with a yellow cover has a UK price of 17/6 and is just a guitar edition. The original UK 1966 stereo release used the 1966 US mix (the 1968 US mix was not used in the UK until around 1982) and had a printed "STEREO"/arrows logo at the top centre of the front sleeve. Later stereo releases (1968-69) used the mono sleeve with a hexagonal gold foil "Stereo" sticker on the back. Hans Seegers has a first release copy of the album with a promo sticker listing the track titles. The inside gatefold sleeve has two folded-over flaps (same as the mono sleeve). Track 2, Side 2, is listed as "Memphis Blues Again" on the record label and the inside gatefold sleeve of some copies. On other copies the inside gatefold sleeve has "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" as below. Both examples with folded-over flaps are shown.
The first release of the album used a stereo record label with the same design as the first mono label, with "BLONDE ON BLONDE" above "BOB DYLAN", with "Record 1" etc. on the right, and showing the record speed as just "33". The title of track 2 on Side 2 is "Memphis Blues Again". This is in line with the first and second releases of the mono version. Gerd Rundel's first release copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A1, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - SDDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D1. Jakob Gerber has a copy where the records have the same matrix numbers. On this copy there is a sticker with "Manufactured by CBS Gt. Britain CBS RECORDS LTD." on the inside of the gatefold sleeve. The identical text is stamped on the plain paper inner sleeves. The front sleeve has the black printed "STEREO"/arrows logo. The records have the same labels as Gerd Rundel's copy but there is a significant difference between Records 1 and 2 in that both records have a small pressing ring around the centre CBS logo, but on Record 2 there is a second larger pressing ring inside the circumference text that can be seen clearly on the Sides 3 and 4 photos. This is not present on Record 2 of Gerd's copy. These labels also have a very distinct textured surface that can be seen on the scans.
Éamonn Ó Catháin confirms that his 1966 stereo copy has the organ (the so-called "harmonium") present on Fourth Time Around. His later copy does not have the organ backing.

The playing speed is shown as "33⅓" on all labels, but Sides 1, 3 and 4 of the first copy shown have this in the larger size used on the earlier labels, while Side 2 has the speed in the smaller size and different type face used on the later labels (see below). The matrix numbers of the records shown are: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A1, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B2, Side 3 - SDDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D1. Gerd Rundel has a copy with the same records but the sleeve has a white stereo/arrows logo sticker and a cheaper price sticker of only "50/-" (£2.50 today).
Lars M. Banke has another variant of the pressing listed here as "1967 release (variant 2)". The sleeve is the same as Manuel's copy shown with a printed ”STEREO”/arrows logo on the front, but no price sticker. The inside of the gatefold sleeve has the Claudia Cardinale-photo as shown, and folded-over flaps at the top and bottom. On the Record 1 labels the space between “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the bottom of the labels and the rest of the circumference text is smaller because all the circumference text is in a larger sans serif type. ”STEREO” with the arrows below are also printed higher, directly underneath "SIDE 1" and "SIDE 2". The letters “DDP” in the catalogue number on Record 1 only are printed aligned to the top of the text and not to the bottom of the text. The playing speed is again shown as "33⅓" on all labels, but all sides now have this in the smaller size and different type face used on the later labels. The Record 2 labels are the same as those of Manuel's Record 2. The records have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 66012 A2, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - SBPG 66012 C3, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D1.

My copy, which is a replacement bought after my original mono copy was stolen in May 1968, has much paler orange labels than the earlier releases - thanks to Roger Ford for confirmation that this was indeed the case. My copy's matrix numbers are: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A2, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - SDDP 66012 C3, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D1. Thomas Wilmeth has a copy with the 1968-69 sleeve without a "Stereo" sticker with Side 2 and Side 4 of the records having the expected matrix numbers SDDP 66012 B1 and SDDP 66012 D1, but Side 1 has SBPG 66012 A2 and Side 3 has SBPG 66012 C3.
CBS UK never got the title of Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again listed correctly on the Side 2 record label! On the 1966 release it is listed on Side 2 as "Memphis Blues Again", on the 1967 and 1968 releases it is listed as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" and on releases after 1969 it reverted to "Memphis Blues Again". Éamonn Ó Catháin has a copy of this release where the record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 66012 A3 (with a mistake scratched out), Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B2, Side 3 - SBPG 66012 C3, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D2.
Oliver Rose has a copy with the same record labels as mine that comes in two separate white card sleeves. The sleeve for Record 1 has black printed text "BLONDE ON BLONDE" and "DYLAN" on the front, with the rear sleeve being plain white. The sleeve for Record 2 is plain white on both sides. The only explanation I have for this is that many record shops at that time used to put only empty sleeves out front in the customer browsing racks, with the record themselves being stored in plain sleeves in racks behind the counter. Only when you bought a record was it put in its sleeve for you to take away. In this case the gatefold sleeve could have gone missing and the records were left in their plain white sleeves. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A1 FC, Side 2 - 0 D (?), Side 3 - SDDP 66012 A1 C3 V, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 A1 D1 F17.

Gavin Whitehouse's copy has another dark orange CBS label variant in that all but one of the songs are now copyrighted by Big Ben Music instead of B. Feldman. For some reason Just Like A Woman on Side 2 remained copyrighted by B. Feldman. William Henry Prince's copy, bought in Liverpool in Nov 1968, still has B. Feldman credits on the Side 1 label, but the Sides 2-4 credits are the same as for Gavin's copy as shown. |

According to Hans Seegers the copyrights on Bob's first UK albums were credited to Blossom Music, then in 1966 the credit changed to B. Feldman, and in 1968-69 it changed again to Big Ben Music.
Éamonn Ó Catháin has a copy with incorrect stamped matrix numbers on Sides 1 and 3. Side 1 has "SDDP 66021 A3" corrected to "SDDP 66012 A3, Side 3 has both "SDDP 66021 C4" and "SDDP 66012 C4".

Peter Coulthard says: "My most recent Blonde On Blonde acquisition was snagged in near mint condition from a charity shop for 4 quid a couple of months ago. It's either a later variant of the 1968-1969 release or an earlier variant of the post-1969 release. It's a UK first stereo mix. Sleeve: no stereo sticker, indented song titles, Claudia photo layout, "Stuck Inside of Mobile With Thee" song title along the top, no folded-over flaps. Labels: Text and text position matches exactly your 1968-1969 release ("B. Feldman", "Stuck Inside of Mobile With Thee" on Side 2, etc, etc) but the labels are a darker hue of orange than yours - more like the colour of the later post 1969 release. Matrices: All machine stamped. Side 1 = S-66021-A3 crossed out and replaced by S 66012 A3, Side 2 = SBPG 66012 B2, Side 3 = SBPG 66012 C3, Side 4 = SDDP 66012 D1. The inner sleeves advertising other CBS album releases give prominence on one side to the Simon & Garfunkel catalogue, most particularly Bridge Over Troubled Water, describing it as "The Sound of the 70's". Bridge Over Troubled Water was released in January 1970. All the other albums advertised on the other side of the inner sleeves are from 1969 and earlier. My assessment is that the discs were pressed in 1969 (because of the "B. Feldman" publishing credit, the "A3" "C3" matrices, and the "Stuck Inside of Mobile With Thee" song name on the Side 2 label), and released in late 1969 or early 1970 given the big advertising push for Bridge Over Troubled Water on the inner sleeves." |

The inner sleeve Peter describes is the same as the one with my copy of New Morning, Oct 1970. The real interest here is that the record labels still have credits to "B. Feldman" instead of "Big Ben Music" as expected. Peter Hobbs has an almost identical copy, with the same gatefold sleeve, record labels and matrix numbers as Peter Coulthard's copy, but with the "The Greatest Hits are on CBS" inner sleeves as my copy of More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits bought in Nov 1971. Again, this later copy still has the "B. Feldman" credits on the labels. I have no explanation other than that CBS were using up old labels.

Colin Baker has a copy of a 1975 release with 1970s-style orange/yellow labels with Bob's name misprinted as "BOY DYLAN" on the Side 1 label (the other three labels are correct). Gerd Rundel also has a copy with this misprint. It comes in a laminated front sleeve, the inside of the gatefold sleeve is not laminated and has the Claudia Cardinale picture and no folded-over flaps. The song titles on the inside gatefold include Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again listed as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee". The records have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A1, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - S 66012 C4, Side 4 - S 66012 D2. The misprint is rare, and both Hans Seegers and Arie de Reus have copies only of the corrected release. Éamonn Ó Catháin has a copy with mixed labels: Record 1 has the corrected orange/yellow labels but Record 2 still has the pale orange last release of the 1960s-style labels. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy with the corrected labels. The gatefold sleeve is not laminated, outside or inside, and has no folded-over flaps, and has the revised inner layout without the Claudia Cardinale photo. Arie de Reus has a 1978 UK Tour Press Pack including a copy of Blonde On Blonde. The record has the correct 1975 CBS orange/yellow labels as shown. The rear sleeve has a gold CBS promo stamp. The inside gatefold design is the revised US version without the Claudia Cardinale picture.

James Ratcliff has a 1970s copy with the original inner gatefold sleeve with different orange/yellow CBS labels from the other two 1970s releases shown - the catalogue number has returned to "CBS Sddp 66012" and the album title, Bob's name and the record number are above the centre hole. The songs are copyrighted to Big Ben Music and B. Feldman. On Side 1 an incorrect matrix number of "66021" has been scratched out! Manuel García Jara has a copy bought in Cardiff in 1975, also with the Claudia Cardinale inner sleeve, which has the same record labels with one minor difference - on James Ratcliff's copy Sides 1 and 2 of Record 2 are numbered "3" and "4", but on Manuel's copy they are numbered "1" and "2"! The records of Manuel's copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - SDDP 66021-A1 (handwritten and crossed out because incorrect) plus SDDP 66012-A1 (handwritten, now correct), Side 2 - SDDP 66012-B1 (handwritten), Side 3 - SDDP 66012-C1 (handwritten), Side 4 - SDDP 66012-D1 (handwritten). Side 1 of Manuel's copy therefore has the same incorrect matrix number as that of James' copy. Neither set of labels yet have the "LC|0149" capsule (the European Union Licence Code "LC" capsules were introduced in 1977, but CBS UK labels don't seem to have them before 1979).

The labels of Record 1 have an “LC|0149” capsule to the left of the centre hole below "STEREO" and the arrows, which makes them late 1970s. However, the labels of Record 2 don't have the “LC|0149” capsule and look the same as those of Arie's 1975 copy. There are probably copies that have the “LC|0149” capsule on the Record 2 labels similar to these Record 1 labels. Manuel García Jara has a late 1970s copy with the revised inner gatefold sleeve without Claudia Cardinale and different orange/yellow CBS labels. "Record x of a 2 Record Set" is on the left of the centre hole, below "Stereo" without arrows, the only occurrence of this placement. "33⅓ RPM" is also left of the centre hole. The labels now have the "LC|0149" capsule at high top right. The matrix numbers of these records are: Side 1 - CBS S 66012 A4, Side 2 - CBS S 66012 B3, Side 3 - CBS S 66012 C5, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D3.

Gerd Rundel has a stereo copy with the mono catalogue number "DDP 66012" on the record labels to the right of the centre hole. He dates this release somewhere between the mid 1970s and before Dag Braathen's early 1980s release below. The front of the gatefold sleeve has “STEREO” above and “66012” below the CBS logo. The rear of the gatefold sleeve has “CB|252” in a rectangle and "LC|0149" in a capsule, now on the second line to the right of the centre hole. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is the same as Arie's 1975 copy with only seven pictures. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels that still have "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom. The arrows below "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole have reappeared! The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 66012 A4, Side 2 - CBS S 66012 B3, Side 3 - CBS S 66012 C5, Side 4 - CBS S 66012 D3.
Gerd has a second copy in the same sleeve as his 1970s mixed labels copy above with record labels that are identical apart from the catalogue numbers to the left and right of the centre hole. This time they have "(S) DDP 66012" instead of "DDP 66012" in both instances. The records of this copy again have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 66012 A4, Side 2 - CBS S 66012 B3, Side 3 - CBS S 66012 C5, Side 4 - CBS S 66012 D3. These matrix numbers are also the same as Gerd's mixed labels 1970s release above in the same sleeve.

Dag Braathen has a copy from the early 1980s with a new catalogue number, CBS 22130, and the anti-copying text "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, which no longer has Claudia Cardinale. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels, still with "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is listed on Side 2 as "Memphis Blues Again". Gerd Rundel has a copy of CBS 22130 in the same gatefold sleeve, still with orange/yellow CBS labels, but where “MADE IN ENGLAND” has been moved to the circumference text on the right and there is no bottom text. James Goulding has a 1982 copy with the right labels for each of the four sides, but the actual records are both Sides 3 and 4 (Record 2, Sides 1 and 2), so that the record labelled Sides 1 and 2 actually plays Sides 3 and 4 as well. I have not previously heard of a copy with this fault. The handwritten matrix numbers of both records are: Side 3 - CBS S 66012 C5, Side 4 - CBS S 66012 D3.

These mid-1980s releases now use the 1968 US stereo mix! They have the same UK gatefold sleeve as Dag Braathen's copy above, with the "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" inner sleeve without Claudia Cardinale. There are three first release variants and the records of all three now have red “CBS” labels with CBS copyright text on the bottom and “MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text to the right of the centre hole. The record labels of Gerd Rundel's first variant copy of the first mid 1980s UK release of CBS 22130 have text "Record 1/2 of a 2 Record Set" below "BOB DYLAN" and "STEREO" with arrows to the left of the centre hole. Gerd Rundel has a second variant of this first mid 1980s UK release. The variant 2 record labels do not have the text "Record 1/2 of a 2 Record Set" and there are no arrows under "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole. The catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is just "22130". There are also considerable differences in the black text below the centre hole. The song titles are still left aligned, but there is just one "B. Dylan" credit below them instead of after each title. Also "licensees" is on the bottom line of text instead of the next to bottom line. The records come in the same sleeve as Gerd's first variant copy and the records have the same matrix numbers.
Ronald Born has a third variant of this first mid 1980s UK release. There is a gold embossed CBS UK promo stamp on the front sleeve. The variant 3 record labels look similar to the variant 2 labels but the CBS copyright info at the bottom of the labels is shorter. The circumference text is now bolder, so it spreads more round the edges of the labels, meaning "MADE IN ENGLAND" is further down, as shown in the detail scan.
Sergio Mariano Romay has found a copy for sale on eBay where the records have red labels on Record 1, and orange/yellow labels with "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the bottom on Record 2 (the first early 1980s release above).

records - the inside gatefold is not present. The front sleeve has a "Nice
Price Doubles" sticker. "22130" is printed at front top right. The text from the inside of
the gatefold sleeve, track listing and musician credits, is printed on the
rear sleeve in white. The records have red CBS labels with "MADE IN
ENGLAND" and the CBS copyright info now in the white circumference text.
The labels have no bottom text. The arrows under "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole have reappeared. The

This mid 1980s second release variant 2 comes in a sleeve with a “Nice Price Doubles” sticker on the front, exactly the same as Manuel's listed second mid 1980's copy above. “MADE IN ENGLAND” is missing from the red CBS labels, which have just the CBS copyright information in the circumference text. This may mean that the records were not made in England, but Holland. Gerd Rundel has a copy of what was probably the final UK regular stereo release before the "audiophile" heavyweight vinyl releases of the 2000s. It has the same single sleeve as before without the "NICE PRICE" front sticker. Track 2, Side 2 is listed as "Memphis Blues Again" on both the rear sleeve and record label. The records have red Columbia labels and the "MADE IN ENGLAND" text is now missing - I think this is because the records were actually made in Holland. This remastered set on 180gm vinyl has the same inside gatefold design with the Claudia Cardinale picture as the UK release CBS SDDP 66012. As can be seen from the scans, the labels have a raised ring round the centre text. This ring is more prominent on the first record (Sides 1 and 2). The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 08 45860 20 1A1 SVLP063, Side 2 - 08 45860 20 1B1 SVLP063, Side 3 - 08 45860 20 1C1 SVLP063, Side 4 - 08 45860 20 1D1 SVLP063. There were two record label variants of Blonde On Blonde, SVLP 063, one has "2000" to the right of the centre hole under the copyright text on Side 1 and 3 (not shown), the other doesn't. Éamonn Ó Catháin points out information from the Steve Hoffman Forum that there are two different Simply Vinyl pressings of Blonde On Blonde. The first pressing apparently features the rare original 1966 mix, the matrix number on Side 1 reads "SVLP 0063 A -1-1-/", while the later pressing has matrix numbers 08 45860 20 1A1 SVLP 063 for Side 1. The sound of the replacement version is rather shrill, which Éamonn confirms. This is the copy that does not have the "2000" on the record labels. He also says that while the original pressing carried the 1966 US stereo mix, the replacement is the first CD truncated version - complete with fade on Just Like A Woman etc! This must be the only instance of it on vinyl.

The first 1970s UK cassette release is on a single cassette described as "DOUBLE PLAY". A copy for sale on www.eil.com is dated as 1974. The tracks have been rearranged to reduce the required tape length, with Obviously 5 Believers on Side 1 and Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again on Side 2. The latter track is mistitled as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" as on the original UK vinyl releases. Dr. Walter Roedl has a copy of this cassette release that has a folded card insert which includes a photo from the inside gatefold on the inside. The cassette is light grey with orange CBS paper labels. This must be the first release of the album on cassette in the UK. |

The second 1970s UK cassette release has the same catalogue number and inlay card, this time with a token to be cut off on the inside. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is again mistitled as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" on the inlay card and Side 2 of the cassette. The cassette is light grey with blue text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. It now has the Dolby noise reduction symbol.

The first 1980s cassette has a new catalogue number CBS 22130 and is pale grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are again no paper labels. The cassette no longer has the tracklisting on Sides 1 and 2. It still has the 1960s/early 1970s CBS logo, but must date from the 1980s because of the new number and also the "Home Taping is Killing Music" piracy logo. Henry V. Bell adds "The quality is surprisingly good and it sports the original UK stereo mix identical to my stereo LP which was replaced by the updated mix in the UK about 1982".
The second 1980s cassette is in the "Nice Price" series. The track order is the same as the other releases. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again on Side 2 is titled correctly! The cassette is pale grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are again no paper labels. It has the 1980s-style CBS logo. Augie Krater has a copy with the first design insert but the second design cassette! This may have been bought at the time of the changeover when CBS UK were using the last of the old inserts with new cassettes.
The third 1980s cassette is clear plastic with white text, there are again no paper labels. It comes with the same folded insert as the second 1980s cassette, even the other artist albums listed are the same.

The 1960s and mid 1970s record labels shown have round the circumference at the bottom the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)
The Australian stereo vinyl releases have differences as follows:
First release: the front sleeve has the "STEREO/360° SOUND" inside a box with arrows logo to the right of the CBS logo at the top left of the front sleeve. Unlike most Australian Dylan releases, the record labels do not have the Allan's logo below the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole (Allan's were music publishers in Australia for Bob Dylan records between 1965 and 1969). The records have plain orange CBS labels with a royalty logo to "J. ALBERT & SON" in that position, as do the labels of the mono release, see Mono Album Releases. "Produced by Bob Johnston" is on one line. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX147653 SBP233345-1, Side 2 - MX147654-B SBP233345-2, Side 3 - MX147657 SBP233346-1, Side 4 - MX147658 SBP233346-2.
Second 1960s release: this has a similar front sleeve as the first release, but the "STEREO/360° SOUND"/arrows logo is higher and smaller. The records have plain orange CBS labels with "Produced by Bob Johnston" on two lines with the Albert royalty logo but no copyright credit to "Albert". It has the same text font on the labels as the mono release. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX147653 SBP233345-1, Side 2 - MX147654-B SBP233345-2, Side 3 - MX147657 SBP233346-1, Side 4 - MX147658 SBP233346-2 (as first release). As the matrix numbers are the same it's possible this is actually the first release. Lars M. Banke has a copy of a 1960s pressing in a sleeve with the stereo arrows on the front sleeve. Record one looks like the 3rd 1960s pressing, while Record two looks like the 2nd 1960s pressing. The records of this copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX147653, Side 2 - MX147654, Side 3 - MX 147657.Side 4 - MX147658.
Third 1960s release: this has a front sleeve with a new "STEREO" logo without arrows. The records have plain orange CBS labels with "Produced by Bob Johnston" on two lines with the copyright credit to "Albert" and the royalty logo missing. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - A MX147653 - B SBP233345-1, Side 2 - A MX147654-C SBP233345-2, Side 3 - A/A MX147657 - B SBP-233346-1, Side 4 - A/A MXI47658 _C SBP-233346-2.
Fourth 1960s release: this has the same front sleeve as the third release with the "STEREO" logo without arrows. The records have plain orange CBS labels with "Produced by Bob Johnston" on two lines with the copyright credit to "Albert" in brackets and the royalty logo missing.
Fifth 1960s release: the front sleeve has the text "Stereo/CAN ALSO BE PLAYED ON MONO EQUIPMENT" below the CBS logo at top left. The records have plain orange CBS labels with "Produced by Bob Johnston" on one line and the copyright credit is to "Albert" (not in brackets) without the royalty logo. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - A MX147653 - B SBP233345-1, Side 2 - A MX147654-C SBP233345-2, Side 3 - A/A MX147657 - B SBP-233346-1, Side 4 - A/A MXI47658 _C SBP-233346-2. Lars M. Banke has a copy of this fifth 1960s pressing, but in a sleeve similar to the third/fourth 1960s pressing (without stereo arrows on the front sleeve).

The Sep 1966* release with plain orange CBS labels was
the first stereo release of this album in New Zealand. According to Roger
Ford this and the Australian release used the 1968 US mix. This release
originally came in a unique mono/stereo sleeve with a monochrome version of
the Bringing It All Back Home front sleeve on the back, printed in
New Zealand by Whitcomb & Tombs Limited. The inner sleeve has the Claudia
Cardinale photo. The front of Arie de Reus' first release copy has a silver "STEREO" sticker, Lars M. Banke's later copy has a printed "STEREO"/arrows logo. Phoenix C's copy also has a printed "STEREO"/arrows logo, but it has a different "CBS" logo, just black instead of black/white. |

Peter Lindberg's later 1960s copy comes in a regular gatefold sleeve - the labels are the same as the earlier releases, but the Side 3 label has the mono catalogue number CBS BP-472215, probably a misprint.
Les Kokay is convinced that the release with the misprint gatefold sleeve is not the first release but was released about 1970. The actual first release had a regular gatefold sleeve as shown but did not arrive in New Zealand until Aug 1967, not as early as Sep 1966.

Lars M. Banke's copy with the same orange record labels as Bill Hester's comes in an identical sleeve to the one shown below marketed by Phonogram with records with orange/yellow CBS labels. Lars has another copy in the gatefold sleeve shown which has a different front without the Stereo/arrows logo and which does not mention Phonogram on the inner sleeve. The records of this copy are put into the sleeve from the inside of the gatefold sleeve (not from the outside) – like some of the French mono Blonde On Blonde releases. Lars M. Banke has a second copy dated Nov 1973 by the original owner in the same sleeve without Phonogram and with the openings for the record on the inside of the gatefold, but the record labels are different. The text lines to the right of the centre hole are ordered differently - Bill's copy has "SIDE ONE" etc. on the second line and "CS 841" on the third line, Lars' copy has "CS 841" on the second line and "SIDE 1" etc. on the third line.
Lars M. Banke has also heard of a copy from this time period with similar orange CBS record labels with the album title above the centre hole but songs credited to "Quaver" instead of "Albert" - more information required. (I have scans of labels from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and Another Side Of Bob Dylan from 1974-76 with songs credited to "Quaver".)
CBS SBP-473314 (New Zealand) - late 1970s release:

The late 1970s release comes again in a regular outer gatefold sleeve and has orange/yellow CBS labels. It has a sleeve catalogue number of just SBP 473314, although the records are still numbered SBP 473314 and SBP 473315. These albums were marketed by Phonogram New Zealand (part of the Philips group, now Universal) on behalf of CBS and the records were made in New Zealand. There is a Phonogram logo on the inside of the late 1970s inner sleeve, but not on those of earlier releases. The records of this copy are put into the sleeve from the outside of the gatefold sleeve as with the 1960s sleeve. |

This album has the original 9 photo US sleeve and catalogue numbers but no country of origin. It was actually made by Hup Hup Records for the Singapore and Malaysian markets. Hup Hup Records in Malaysia and its associated company Life Records in Singapore and Hong Kong were the first regional licensees for foreign labels such as CBS, MCA and KAPP in South East Asia in the 1960s and 1970s. Records manufactured in Singapore were distributed in Malaysia through Hup Hup Records' own Music City store chain. (In the 1960s/1970s each record company had its own record store chain in Malaysia, Hup Hup had Music City, EMI had Music Scene, Decca had Decca Orient, and Phonogram (Philips, Vertigo, Fontana, etc.) had Musicorner.) Hup Hup Records continued issuing CBS and later CBS/Sony records in Malaysia until the mid 1970s, when they lost the CBS licence to EMI Malaysia/Singapore, who produced CBS/Sony titles with the orange/cream record labels such as The Basement Tapes, but in turn lost their license when CBS Malaysia was set up. CBS Malaysia manufactured cassettes locally but imported LPs, so Bob Dylan records were no longer made in Malaysia or Singapore. |

The front of the gatefold sleeve has a "CBS" sticker in the top left corner to obscure the "COLUMBIA" logo and the US catalogue number. The inside gatefold sleeve has “PRINTED IN USA” in the bottom right corner. The records have plain red US-style labels with three CBS logos and the white STEREO "360° SOUND" logo.
Gerard Germano's Side 1 and Side 2 record labels have incorrect matrix numbers “XMS 113765 / XMS 113766” printed to the right of the centre hole (correct would be: XSM 113765 / XSM 113766). Sides 3 and 4 are correctly printed. Gerd Rundel's first copy has the same Side 1 and Side 2 labels, but his copy also has incorrect matrix numbers on Sides 3 and 4! All the record labels of Gerd's second copy have correct matrix numbers “XSM …” to the right of the centre hole (however the “M” on the Side 4 label is badly printed). There is an important difference on the labels of record 2 of this copy - “BOB DYLAN” and the album title on Side 3 and Side 4 are not in bold characters as they are on the Side 1 and Side 2 labels of record 1.
The records of Gerard Germano's and both Gerd Rundel's copies have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1: XSM-113765, Side 2: XSM-113766, Side 3: XSM-113767, Side 4: XSM-113768. These are the correct matrix numbers that should be printed on the labels.

All Japanese Dylan releases before 1968, when Sony took over Columbia/CBS,
were in stereo. All these Japanese CBS releases are very collectable and come
with unique inserts and booklets. For the Japanese CBS Bob Dylan and Bob Dylan Vol. 2 albums,

Wil Gielen has a test pressing with just Side 1 of this album (Side 3 of the 2LP set) with Polish music on the reverse (numbered YS-750-C)! The record labels are plain white with handwritten Japanese characters with the catalogue numbers rubber stamped. Thanks to Moise Potié for confirming that the Japanese characters on Side 1 translate as "Blonde On Blonde Bob Dylan Volume 6" and on Side 2 as "Beautiful Polish Folk Songs".

This new stereo vinyl release from Sony Music Japan comes with a reproduction of the original first release obi from 1970. The price is now ¥6,050 whereas the original price was ¥3,600 (twice the single album price of ¥1,800)! It comes with a 60th Anniversary postcard commemorating Bob's debut on Columbia Records. The "60 Dylan" picture is based on a work by Hiroshige Utagawa (spot Bob and Suze). The Japanese script says "60 years since his debut album was released" (19 Mar 1962 in the USA, although not until 1966 in Japan). The original picture is called "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake" and dates from 1857. |

"Blonde On Blonde Vol. 1" - stereo vinyl LP releases,
CBS S 62739 (NL), 1967(?), re-released mid-1970s, md-1980s:
The release dates of the two Dutch and German single LPs of
Blonde On Blonde are a mystery. In his book "Bob Dylan in the Netherlands
1965-1978" Tom Willems dates them as 1967, but Manuel García Jara says his
father dated them in his notebook as Aug 1966. It is also surprising that
Blonde On Blonde Vol. 1 is CBS S 62739, while Blonde On Blonde
Vol. 2 is CBS S 62737. The intervening album, CBS S 62738, was
the jazz album We'll Stick Together by the Louis van Dyke Trio, and this
was released in Holland in Jul 1966. This would imply that the single LPs were
actually released in 1966, a year before the Dutch release of the 2LP set! Tom Willems says these albums were planned to be released by CBS Holland
on 8 Aug 1966, but were not in the end released until 1967, which is why the
catalogue numbers are from 1966. Both record labels of these releases have
"(P) 1967" at bottom right of the centre CBS logo.

Two 1967 issues of the Dutch music magazine "Musiek Expres" have adverts for Dylan records that support
a later date than 1966 or even 1967 in Holland:

However, Arie de Reus says these single albums were not actually released until after the release of New Morning in Oct 1970, and then sold in Germany only (after CBS Germany stopped making their own albums and imported them from Holland instead)! The rear sleeves have no folded-over flaps, whereas Dutch sleeves from 1966-67 all have folded-over flaps, although this may just be because flaps would have covered the top and bottom text lines. However, a 1969 CBS West German promo poster for Nashville Skyline has a Dylan discography on the back including CBS S 62739 and CBS S 62737 as shown, which proves the albums were released before 1969. As New Morning in Oct 1970 was the last Dylan release made in Germany, these two albums definitely date from before then.
Roger Ford says the only copy he's seen of the separate release of Record 1 had the "revised" stereo mix that was released in the USA in 1968, although this was probably done after the album's first release in 1966.

CBS S 62739 is the first record only of Blonde On Blonde. It has a laminated front sleeve. The rear sleeve is the left-hand side of the inside of the gatefold edition, with the pictures being slightly larger. There are no folded-over flaps. The "57" in a white circle on the 1967 and first 1970s Dutch rear sleeves is printed, as is the black "P" in the bottom right-hand corner on all the rear sleeves. with the same record labels but with an important difference on the rear sleeve,

at rear top right. Lars M. Banke's mid-1980s re-issue now has a record with red CBS labels, the
style introduced around Nov 1985 with Biograph. The sleeve is the same as
Sergio's 1970s copy with "54"
in a circle at rear top right as shown in the detail scan above.

The West German release comes in a similar sleeve to that of the Dutch release, with differences as shown. Additional text "D Made in Germany" has been added on the front sleeve, while the text "NL printed in holland" is missing from the rear sleeve.
In line with the three variants of the Vol. 2 release below, I have called the three variants here "1A", "1B" and "2".
Simon Blokker's copy (variant 1A) has no "P" on the rear sleeve as the next two variants. The record labels have one song printed above the CBS logo and the other song titles are on separate lines. "MADE IN GERMANY" is at the bottom of the labels instead of being in the circumference text to the left as variant 1B. On the Side 2 label track 2 is listed as "Memphis Blues Again". The record has the same stamped matrix numbers as Gerd Rundel's variant 1B copy and also has "Made in Germany" stamped in the vinyl on both sides as shown. Ralph Boehm has a white label promo copy of this variant.
The record of Gerd Rundel's German copy (variant 1B) has a "P" on the rear sleeve at bottom right. The record comes in an inner sleeve that can be dated 1969 or later, because it has illustrations of John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. His German copy of CBS S 62737 comes in exactly the same inner sleeve. The record labels are slightly different, but still with one song printed above the CBS logo and the other song titles on separate lines. "MADE IN GERMANY" is now in the circumference text on the left below "33 STEREO" and not at the bottom of the labels. On the Side 2 label track 2 is listed as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With The". Ronald Born thinks this label design is later than variant 1A. Two matrix numbers are stamped on each side of the record: Side 1 - S 62739 A 639734 A, Side 2 - S 62739 B 639734 B.
Lars M. Banke's copy (variant 2) has a sleeve with a "P" on the rear as variant 1B and completely different record labels (variant 2). Not only is the text to the left and right of the centre hole different, all song titles on Side 1 are now printed below the CBS logo continuously in a completely different type face, there are none above. This variant does however have "MADE IN GERMANY" again at bottom centre of the labels. The Side 1 label has handwritten text with the name of the original owner and what must be the purchase date of "1-9-72" (1 Sep 1972). On the Side 2 label track 2 is again listed as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With The". The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 639734 A S 62739 A, Side 2 - 62739 B S 62739 B, plus "Manufactured in Germany" stamped in the vinyl on both sides.
Lars Westerlund has a copy of the German CBS S 62739 which plays the correct tracks on both sides but the Side 1 label is that of Ray Conniff's World Of Hits (CBS S 62756)! The Side 2 label is correct.

This is the second record only of Blonde On Blonde. It has a laminated front sleeve. Surprisingly, the catalogue number S 62737, is lower than that of Vol. 1, which is S 62739. (As noted above, the intervening album CBS S 62738 was by the Louis van Dyke Trio.) The rear sleeve is the right-hand side of the inside of the gatefold edition including the picture of Claudia Cardinale, with the pictures being slightly larger. There are no folded-over flaps. The white "P" in the bottom right-hand corner is printed, although the "IV" in the top right-hand corner of the Dutch release is on a silver foil sticker. Also note the German text at front top left and rear bottom left on both releases. The Dutch rear sleeve has "NL PRINTED IN HOLLAND" at bottom right, which is missing from the German rear sleeve.
This time Roger Ford says the only copy he's seen of the separate release of disc 2 had the "original" stereo mix from 1966.
Patrick Helfrich has a 1970s reissue of the album where the record has orange/yellow CBS labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - cbs 01-62737-1A-2, Side 2 - 01-62737-1B-1. Sergio Mariano Romay has a 1980s copy in the same sleeve as shown where the record now has red CBS labels. The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - S 66012-C CBS 01-62737-1A-2 (handwritten), Side 2 - only CBS 01-62737-1B-1 A (handwritten).

The Dutch magazine "Hit Week" #51, dated 2 Sep
1966, had Blonde On
Blonde on the front cover with an article titled "BLONDE ON BLONDE IS GEWELDIG
[BLONDE ON BLONDE IS AMAZING]". The first line of the Dylan article says: "Sneller dan we hadden verwacht is de dubbel-elpee 'Blonde On Blonde' van Bob Dylan in ons land uitgekomen. [Faster than we had expected, the double-album 'Blonde On Blonde' by Bob Dylan is released in our country.]" However, Tom Willems points out that this is very misleading - the picture is of the UK release, not the Dutch release, and the double albums were imported from the UK, as stated in his book "Bob Dylan in the Netherlands 1965-1979". Blonde On Blonde was not actually released in Holland until 1967, see below. |

The inside of the gatefold sleeve again has the nine picture design with Claudia Cardinale and an extra wide white border with stereo information at the top and bottom of the left hand panel. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is listed as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee" on the inside of the gatefold sleeve and as "Memphis Blues Again" on the Side 2 label. Simon Blokker has a copy of the 1967 release with the Side 4 label on both sides of Record 2.
The 1970 reissue has a similar outer sleeve but on the outside of the gatefold sleeve the catalogue number above the CBS logo is half cut-off. There is extra text "NL printed in holland" printed vertically on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, missing from the 1967 release. The 1970 records are exactly the same as the 1967 records and this time have CBS inner sleeves showing contemporary 1970 CBS albums. The records of the 1970 copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A1, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - SDDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D1.
Manuel García Jara has another copy of the 1970 release with the inside of the gatefold sleeve upside down! The records of this copy also have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SDDP 66012 A1, Side 2 - SDDP 66012 B1, Side 3 - SDDP 66012 C1, Side 4 - SDDP 66012 D1. Jérémie Viala's copy looks identical to the 1970 copy shown but the inner sleeves have details of 1972 albums. On the front of this copy the catalogue number above the CBS logo is not cut-off. The records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 66012 AIII, Side 2 - S 66012 BIII, Side 3 - S 62737 A, Side 4 - S 62737 B.

Ulf Gyllenspetz has found a Dutch copy of S 62739 in Sweden with a yellow
Swedish sticker with text "SPECIAL PRICE/2 LPs for the price of 1 LP" which
dates from around 1971. The inner gatefold sleeve has the picture of Claudia
Cardinale as above. The records are the same as for the 1970 Dutch release above and come in the same German inner sleeves with "Super Star-Serie" on the sleeve for Record 1, and "Gold-Serie" on the sleeve for Record 2 that were used for the records of the 1971 Dutch release of More Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits with the UK tracklist. Lars M. Banke has a copy of the Dutch 1970s pressing of Blonde on Blonde. Side 3 plays the correct Dylan tracks but is mislabelled as it has the label of Side 1 of CBS 66247, Louis Armstrong’s posthumous Memorial double-album from late 1971. Louis died in July 1971. The records have the following matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 66012 AIII, Side 2 - S 66012 BIII, Side 3 - S 62737 A (correct despite the label!), Side 4 - S 62737 B.
Éamonn Ó Catháin has a copy with records with the plain orange labels that dates from around 1972. On Side 1 he thinks that Visions Of Johanna "sounds really weird. Bob sounds 50km away, though he’s placed dead centre, and there’s very little information in the left-hand channel, with the bulk of the action taking place in the right. An odd, spiky, mix. I haven’t seen this commented on before. The rest of the LP sounds normal enough but there’s a distinct “ghostly” feel when Visions Of Johanna comes on. There’s a drop in volume and the overall sound of the track sounds “recessed”." As above, the records have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S 66012 AIII, Side 2 - S 66012 BIII, Side 3 - S 62737 A, Side 4 - S 62737 B, with the CBS "Walking Eye" logo on Record 1 and the "H" in a circle that indicates the record was pressed by CBS Haarlem on Record 2.

This 2LP set is unique in that it is the only Dylan album made specifically for the Danish market! It has a unique Danish catalogue number but was manufactured in Holland. All other Dylan albums sold in Denmark were imported from the UK or Holland, and in some cases, imported from the USA with all the Columbia logos masked or covered by CBS logos. The sleeve is not laminated and has the Danish catalogue number on the front above the CBS logo. The inside of the gatefold sleeve again has the nine picture design with Claudia Cardinale and an extra wide white border with stereo information at the top of the left hand panel. It also has "NL PRINTED IN HOLLAND" at the bottom right of the left hand panel. The records have orange CBS labels with text "MADE IN HOLLAND" and dated 1967. The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - STE 62739A S66012Alll, Side 2 - STE 62739B S66012Blll, Side 3 - 62737A, Side 4 - 62737B. |

the Dutch copyright organisation "C.C. BIEM" rather than the Spanish
organisation "SGAE" so the album was intended for sale in Holland
or another European country.

Jonas Ruthenberg has a 2LP Blonde On Blonde reissue from Holland. The sleeve looks like that of the 2LP 1970 Dutch reissue with some minor differences: it is not laminated; the catalogue number (S 66012) on the front cover above the CBS logo is not cut-off; the original nine photo inside design; Stereo information and extra text "NL printed in holland" on the outside; a small "2xU" in a circle at top right of the rear sleeve (right next to Dylan's right arm); Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee on the inside of the gatefold sleeve and Memphis Blues Again on the Side 2 label. Both LPs have the original stereo mix. |

The records have mid to late 1970s CBS orange/yellow labels, exactly the same as those of the 1975 Swedish export copy below. This label style was used by CBS between 1974 and 1980 and has no "LC" number. The LC "Label Code" was introduced in Germany in May 1976 and in other European countries in 1977. This copy therefore must be a mid 1970s reissue from after 1974 and before 1977. The handwritten matrix numbers are strange: Side 1 - "Ste-62739-A S 66012 - A III (the "12" of the second number is underlined with a dash or something like that and there is a symbol about 3cm after the III which looks like a initial or a signature, but is now revealed to be the CBS "Walking Eye" logo); Side 2 - "Ste-62739-B S 66012 - B III (with the dash and the symbol just like on Side 1); Side 3 - 66202- C S 62737-A (no dash and no strange symbol, but a small "H" in a circle about 10cm after the second number ("66202" is actually a Benny Goodman album catalogue number - see above!); Side 4 - S 62737 - B 66012- D (no dash, no symbol, but again the small encircled "H", which indicates the record was pressed at CBS Haarlem). Jonas thinks it looks like they used the stampers from the single LP versions above (Vol. 1 "62739" and Vol. 2 "62737") and added the 2LP matrix-numbers. or maybe the matrix numbers were handwritten late on a Friday afternoon by someone who was in a hurry to get home for the weekend!

This copy of the 1975 set was made in Holland, but imported to Sweden - it has a gold CBS Records, Sweden, promo stamp. The records have 1970s-style orange/yellow labels with just CBS 66012 as the catalogue number. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is listed as "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" on the inner sleeve and "Memphis Blues Again" on the record label (see photo on right). I don't know whether this uses the 1966 US mix or the 1968 US mix. Lars M. Banke has a second copy with the same gold promo stamp "FOR PROMOTION ONLY/NOT FOR SALE/CBS RECORDS SWEDEN" on the rear sleeve.

This 1991 release has a new catalogue number "Columbia 463369 1". The gatefold sleeve has a red/white "DYLAN ORIGINALS" sticker on the front and there are some differences from Gerd's late 1980s copy: there is no CBS logo and catalogue number on top left of the front; the "STEREO"/arrows logo is positioned differently on the front; there is now a barcode on the rear; there is a small number "01-463369-20" on the inside and rear of the gatefold sleeve. "NL printed in holland" is missing from the inside of the gatefold sleeve, which still has the original nine picture design with Claudia Cardinale.
Both LPs come in the same "DYLAN ORIGINALS" inner sleeve. The records have red Columbia labels and were made in Holland. They have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-62739-4A-1 (stamped), Side 2 - 01-62739-2B-1 (stamped), Side 3 - S 66012-C (handwritten), CBS 01-62737-1A-2 (stamped), Side 4 - 01-62737-20 B (handwritten), 01-66012-1D-1 (stamped), 01-62737-1B-1 (handwritten). Side 1, Side 2 and Side 4 also have “NL” stamped in the vinyl.

Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is listed as “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee” on the inside of the gatefold sleeve and “Memphis Blues Again” on the Side 2 record label. The records have red “COLUMBIA” labels with the French "SACEM" copyright organisation logo to the left of the centre hole as well as the Dutch "BIEM". Gerd Rundel's copies shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01 66012 20 1A1, Side 2 - 01 66012 20 1B1, Side 3 - 01 66012 20 1C1, Side 4 - 01 66012 20 1D1. Lars M. Banke's copy does not have the “CB|252” sticker, but it does have a white sticker with "MADE IN HOLLAND" on the rear. This copy has slightly different record labels, with the UK "MCPS" as well as "SACEM" and "BIEM".

The original 1971 documents shown above are reproduced in the book "Veneno en dosis camufladas. La censura en los discos de pop-rock durante el franquismo" ("Poison in camouflaged doses. Censorship in pop-rock albums under Franco's regime") by Xavier Valiño, ed. Milenio). The censors refused the publication of six tracks (8 Nov 1971): Just Like A Woman (see scan with the text "Denegado [Denied]" stamped over the lyrics); Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat ("obscene"), I Want You, Obviously Five Believers, Temporary Like Achilles ("possible homosexuality") and 4th Time Around ("immoral"). Surprisingly, Just Like A Woman and I Want You had already been released for almost two years, included on Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. CBS Spain replied on 17 Nov 1971, giving two reasons why the album should be released: the first is because of economy "we have 1000 double albums ready to sale and to destroy those albums would be an significant loss to our company"; but the second reason is amazing: Bob Dylan "is an obscure lyricist, who writes in American slang, very difficult to understand even for Spanish people who speak English correctly. His songs are composed without any structure and they are just meaningless ideas."(!!!). Blonde On Blonde was eventually authorised and released in Spain in 1972.

The gatefold sleeve was printed by Offset ALG of Madrid for CBS and uses the replacement US 7-picture design with the limited edition number and details of the free single (wrongly titled as Bob Dylan Y The Band) at lower centre right. The records of the COFASA release had orange 1960s-style CBS labels. The records were switched, so that the regular Sides 1 and 2 were on Record 2 and the regular Sides 3 and 4 were on Record 1! The records were in printed inner sleeves with the English lyrics (with record side numbers corrected by the original owner) and there was also a double-sided insert with text about the album and reviews in Spanish. The title of Pledging My Time was misprinted as "PLEDGINS MY TIME". Juan B. Heinink's copy was pressed by COFASA for CBS from probably a US matrix and has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113767-2D (should be Side 3), Side 2 - XSM 113768-2L (should be Side 4), Side 3 - XSM 113765-2A (should be Side 1), Side 4 - XSM 113766-2D (should be Side 2). Lars M. Banke has a copy with a pair of different mistakes - Sides 1 and 2 are labelled "Cara 3" and "Cara 4" as shown, but Sides 3 and 4 both have the same "Cara 2" label, listing only Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands. The matrix numbers of these records are exactly the same as Juan B. Heinink's copy.

The album was released later in 1972 by CBS. This time there was no free single and the inside of the gatefold sleeve, again printed by Offset ALG of Madrid for CBS, no longer mentions it. The record labels look very similar to those of Manuel's late 1975/early 1976 copy with the speed information in the same position - the most obvious difference is that "SGAE" is still in a box. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113765 -4D (stamped), Side 2 - XSM 113766-4A (stamped) 66012 B (handwritten), Side 3 - XSM 113767-4C (stamped) 66012 C (handwritten), Side 4 - XSM 113768-3E (stamped) 66012 B2 (handwritten). Strangely there is no handwritten "66012" matrix number on Side 1.

On the rear of the gatefold sleeve at bottom left there is a sticker of “Galerías Preciados” (a Spanish department store group founded in 1943 which disappeared in 1995, when it was absorbed by rival group El Corte Inglés. The group took his name from the Preciados street in the city of Madrid, where the first commercial venue was situated. This gatefold sleeve was printed by "Offset ALG – San Raimundo, 31 – Madrid-20".
The records were in printed inner sleeves with the English lyrics, and there was also a double-sided insert with text about the album and reviews in Spanish (as for 1972 COFASA and 1972 CBS releases). Again, the title of Pledging My Time was misprinted as “PLEDGINS MY TIME”. These inner sleeves have “Copyright © 1966 DWARF MUSIC” at the bottom plus “Offset ALG – San Raimundo, 31 – Madrid-20” on the rear of the second sleeve (unlike the inner sleeves of previous releases, where the text was longer).
The records have orange/yellow 1970s style CBS labels, with significant differences in text layout from the previous release:
"Cara 1 [Side 1]", etc., are always to the right of the centre hole, above "SGAE", which is now back in a box
To the left of the central hole, “r.p.m.” has been added to the speed ("33⅓")
Arrows have now been added Under “ESTEREO”
On Side 1, below the "SGAE" box, is now printed “Depósito Legal M-12563-1971” and on Side 3, below the "SGAE" box, is “Depósito legal M-12562-1971” (on other releases these are switched: Side 1 has "M-12562-1971" and Side 3 has "M-12563-1971", as would be expected)
On Side 2, “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The” is spread over two lines (like the 1972 CBS release).
The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113765-4D, Side 2 - XSM 113766-4A, Side 3 - XSM 113767-4C, Side 4 - XSM 113768-3E.

In 1978 CBS reissued all the Dylan albums in Spain. The 1978 sleeve is identical to previous releases, without the sticker of the 1975 release. This album has the inner sleeve with lyrics, but the previous address of CBS Spain ("Calle Princesa 1") is absent. Blonde On Blonde is the only Spanish Dylan album without the Discos CBS Madrid address on the sleeve (only the printer's information is on the inner gatefold)! The orange/yellow CBS record labels have a different design and Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is again titled "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The" on the Side 2 label. In 1991 Discos CBS Spain released a "20th Anniversary Edition". This was actually the 20th anniversary of CBS in Spain, not of the album. Three Dylan albums were chosen for this series: Greatest Hits and Nashville Skyline (originally released in Spain in 1970) were reissued in 1990 and this copy of Blonde On Blonde was reissued in 1991.

Blonde On Blonde. He says "There
is harmonium on 4th Time Around on the LP I bought in France in 1974 (CBS S
66012 ), it is not the first French version; the sleeve was printed in Holland,
disc one was made in Spain and disc 2 in Holland, this is the version
distributed by CBS France in 1974. The inside gatefold sleeve has the Claudia
Cardinale picture. I think the first French releases (the ones with
the text inside) are in mono only." (See

These copies of Blonde
on Blonde have the same catalogue number as the 1975 South African
release, CBS AGP.9/10. The first copy is believed to be from Rhodesia even though there is no "Belmont Printers" logo on the rear sleeve at bottom right as would be expected. It does not have a gatefold sleeve, but a single sleeve of the same poor paper quality as other Rhodesian releases. |

The rear sleeve has the same design as the usual left-hand inner sleeve, and has the Record 2 song titles along the bottom edge instead of musician credits. The records of this copy have orange CBS labels and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 113765, Side 2 - XSM 113766, Side 3 - AGP 9-10 XSM 113767, Side 4 - XSM 113768.
The second copy is definitely from Rhodesia because it has a sleeve of equally poor quality, with a Belmont Printers code of "4-B2" printed on the rear sleeve at bottom right. The records have the same labels and matrix numbers as those of the first copy, which confirms they are both Rhodesian.

These rare double albums with gatefold sleeves were released in Portugal in the mid 1970s and late 1980s. They both have the same gatefold sleeve as the Dutch double set released in 1967 (except for the details shown), The mid-1970s album was made in Portugal by Rádio Triunfo, Lda, and printed by Gráficos Reunidos, Porto. These albums are dated 1967 on the inner gatefold (the date of the Dutch release). The mid-1970s records have orange/yellow 1970s style CBS labels with much less colour gradation than the Spanish labels immediately above. Sides 2 and 3 have stamps from an English record shop in Southampton. On Side 4 of the first release the writer's credit is incorrectly shown as "Dob Dylan"! The records of the copy shown are numbered "FACE 1" to "FACE 4" and have matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-66012-A III (handwritten), Side 2 - S-66012-B III (handwritten), Side 3 - S-66012-C (handwritten), Side 4 - OI 66012-D (stamped). |

The late 1980s album was made in Portugal by CBS (Portugal), Música e Discos Lda, and printed by Gráfico Monumental. It has "NL printed in holland" printed vertically on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, but this is just part of the Dutch sleeve that should have been removed. The records have red CBS labels and the sides of both are numbered "1" and "2". On Side 4 the writer's credit is again correct. The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - 01-66012-A (stamped), Side 2 - 01-66012-B (stamped), Side 3 - S 66012-C (handwritten), Side 4 - 01-66012-D (stamped.

This is the rare Greek
release of Blonde On Blonde,
released in the mid 1970s and manufactured by Diski CBS A.E.B.E, Greece. The
sleeve is based on the Dutch release above with the half cut-off CBS logo.
The inner gatefold has the Claudia Cardinale 9 photo layout with stereo
information at top left and information about the Greek manufacturer at
bottom left. This album is a sampler copy: note the stamped "K99" (an Athens radio station) on the rear of the outer gatefold sleeve and on record labels 1 and 3. |

The mid-1970s Greek releases had a printer code "MT 49xx" on the rear sleeve at bottom right (for Blonde On Blonde it was at bottom right on the inside of the gatefold sleeve). Blonde On Blonde for some reason was "MT 4968/69" (out of order since Highway 61 Revisited was "MT 4962" and John Wesley Harding was "MT 4963").
The records shown have orange/yellow CBS labels but they are different from each other: the labels of record 1 have copyright text around the circumference in English only; the labels of record 2 are noticeable darker and they have the copyright text in English and Greek. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1: S 66012-A III, Side 2: S 66012-B III, Side 3: S 66012-C Ste-62377-A, Side 4: S 66012-D Ste-62377-B.

This 2LP set was released by Globus International in the former joined country of Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) under licence from Sony Music Entertainment Ltd. It does not have a gatefold sleeve, just a slightly wider regular sleeve holding two LPs, so the photos from the inner sleeve are all missing. The records have black Globus labels. Promo copies have additional text of "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE" on the record labels in English and Czech. Simon Blokker has two promo copies, one has the promotional text on all the labels plus "91 1" (first half of 1991) printed on the bottom line on the left of the centre hole. The second copy has the promotional text on Side 3 only, and "91 1" is missing. The labels of the commercial copy shown are also missing the "91 1", as are the labels of a commercial copy owned by Ulf Gyllenspetz (not shown). As well as the standard editions in black vinyl, the records were also released in Limited Editions in red and blue multicoloured vinyl, and in blue, pink, yellow and green solid coloured vinyl! Hans Seegers has a promotional copy with the records on blue multicoloured vinyl, again with the promotional text on Side 3 only. Hans Seegers has a commercial copy with the records on green vinyl where the labels do have the "91 1", as does Dietmar Petschl's commercial copy on green vinyl. |
