Blonde On Blonde - CD Releases
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For LP and tape releases of Blonde On Blonde, click Up. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Original CD and MD (MiniDisc) Releases
"Blonde On Blonde" - single CD release, Columbia (various catalogue numbers) (USA), 1982 onwards:
Alan Hoaksey lists four US CD catalogue numbers:
Columbia CD 644114 2 (May 1982)
Columbia CD 644114 2 re-release (date?)
Columbia CGK 841 (Aug 1987) - shown below
Columbia CK 6447 (date?)
More information about the missing releases required! Jack from Canada thinks that some may be imported from Japan, as in the early 1980s there was no Columbia CD pressing plant in North America. Also see 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities for the truncated releases.
Columbia CGK 841 (USA), Aug 1987, re-released early 1990s:
Jack from Canada's copy is probably the first with a CD made in the USA. The exterior artwork is the same as that of Rich Wong's copy but the front insert is now an eight-page booklet. The CD is quite different and now has the "CGK 841" catalogue number. It has just "Columbia" to the left of the centre hole and the number "DIDP 070406" is present below "CGK 841" to the right of the centre hole. The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) is a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed at one of their CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC").
Columbia CGK 841 (USA for Japan), mid-1990s:
The inserts are identical to those from Jack from Canada's copy above, as even is the first front sticker. The CD is identical to that from Jack from Canada's copy above except that the number "DIDP 070406" is missing below "CGK 841" to the right of the centre hole. This probably means that the CD was either manufactured by Sony in Japan, or at another US CD pressing plant under contract from Columbia.
Thanks to Rich Wong, Jack from Canada and Wil Gielen for information and scans.
"Blonde On Blonde" - Mastersound Collector's Edition Super Bit Mapped (SBM) gold CD stereo releases, Columbia CK 53016 (USA), 1992; Columbia CK 64411 (USA), 1994:
Columbia CK 53016 (USA) - front of digipak, scan by Hans Seegers (1992 release) |
The 1992 release of
the US gold CD came in a 12" x 6" book-style digipak, and the 1994 release
in a slipcase like the European edition. For the
Japanese and European gold CD releases, see below. This release contains rarities, for details see 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities. |

Sony Records SRCS 6157 (Japan), 1 Dec 1991:
Hans Seegers has two copies - a promo release and the commercial release. The promo release has a numbered sticker on the rear insert and handwritten Japanese text on the clear plastic centre of the CD itself.
Sony Records SRCS 7905 (Japan), 1995:
The obi was white, orange and black with black and white text and price ¥2,000. It also had a 24-page folded booklet. The CD itself was red.

This release had a 32 page booklet, but no rear insert (to show the gold CD). It had a black and gold obi with price ¥3,200 and date "93-4-21" (21 Apr 1993). The withdrawal date was "95-4-20" (20 Apr 1995). This gold edition of the album was replaced by the 1999 Super Audio CD (SA-CD) release, see International Albums (Regular).
Gerd Rundel has a copy of SRCS 6682 in a magnificent wooden box with gold plated clasp and hinges, plus an inscribed gold plate. It has the same obi as Hans Seegers' copy. Hans is of the opinion this was a privately-produced "vanity" project independent of Sony, replacing the jewel case of the regular copies with a limited edition wooden box.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Wil Gielen and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Blonde On Blonde" - MiniDisc releases, Sony Records SRYS 1027 (Japan), 12 Dec 1992; Sony Records SRYS 1214 (Japan), 22 Oct 1997:
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Wil Gielen and Moise Potié for information and scans.
"Blonde On Blonde" - Super Audio CD (SA-CD) release, SME (Sony Music Enterprises) Records SRGS 4531 (Japan), 1999:
"Blonde On Blonde" - single CD releases, CBS CDCBS 66012 (Austria for Europe), mid-1980s; CBS CDCBS 22130 (Austria for Europe), Cir 1987; CBS 463369 2 (Austria for Europe), late 1980s; Columbia 463369 2 (Austria for Europe), early 1990s:
CBS CDCBS 66012 (Austria for Europe), mid-1980s:
CBS CDCBS 66012 (Austria for Europe) - front scan by Keith Schweiger (first CBS release) |
This was the "regular" CD release of Blonde On Blonde until 2004. The first CBS release disc has the original European LP catalogue number 66012 and was made in Japan for CBS Europe, the CDs for subsequent CBS and Columbia releases were made in Austria. This CD has a total length of 74 mins, unlike the edited UK release which totals 72 mins (see 1966 Blonde On Blonde Rarities). |
|
|
CBS CDCBS 66012 (UK) - front scan by Stefan Kraft (edited CBS UK release) |
CBS CDCBS 22130 (Austria for Europe), Cir 1987:
The first example of CBS 22130 shown has a clear CD tray and the reverse of the rear insert repeats the front photo. It has a "Nice Price" sticker but the "Nice Price" catalogue is a separate insert, not part of the front insert booklet. The second example of CBS 22130 shown has a black CD tray, the front insert booklet includes a "Nice Price" catalogue - this is the same as for CBS 463369 2, the final CBS release with the catalogue number that was also used for the Columbia release. Éamonn Ó Catháin has a copy of CBS 22130 with a red CD tray although the CD inside has catalogue number 66012 and was pressed in Japan, not Australia!
CBS 463369 2 (Austria for Europe), late 1980s:
Columbia 463369 2 (Austria for Europe), early 1990s (two variants):
Gerd Rundel has a copy of the same release. The front insert is a twelve-page booklet which again has the misprinted "Rainy Day Woman # 12 & 36" in the tracklisting as shown.
Thanks to Keith Schweiger, Ulf Gyllenspetz, Manuel García Jara and Gerd Rundel for information and pictures.
"Blonde On Blonde" - MiniDisc release, Columbia MD 66012 (Austria for Europe), 1992:
"Blonde On Blonde" - Mastersound Collector's Edition Super Bit Mapped (SBM) stereo gold CD, Columbia/Legacy 480417 2 (UK), 1998:
Columbia/Legacy 480417 2 (UK) - gold CD slipcase front showing picture CD |
For more details of the contents of this release, which contains rare mixes/edits, see 1966
Blonde On Blonde Rarities.
This is a reissue of the US and Japanese 1992 gold disc releases shown above. The jewel case containing this CD is in a white card slipcase with a shaped hole cut in the front that shows the gold CD itself. There's a similar hole in the rear insert. The jewel case front insert unfolds to show the second US gatefold inner sleeve design - left-hand side on the reverse, right-hand side on the front. All the colour pictures have the colour balance shifted towards yellow - this is from the original, not a fault of the scanner. |

Columbia/Legacy 480417 2 (UK) - detail of gold picture CD ("Made in Japan") |
Although the CD was made in Japan, it has an extra serial number "DIDP 11263". The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) is a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed in Terre Haute, IN, or one of their other CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC"). This gold edition of the album was replaced by the 1999 Super Audio CD (SA-CD) release.
"Blonde On Blonde" - Millennium Edition CD release, Columbia MILLEN15 (UK), 1999:
Columbia MILLEN15 (UK) - front of card sleeve with obi, scan by David Burgess |
For more details of this release in a card sleeve, which contains
rare mixes/edits, see 1966
Blonde On Blonde Rarities.
This CD came in a folded card sleeve reproducing the original LP artwork. What is extremely interesting is that the inside sleeve has the original UK artwork with the picture of Claudia Cardinale, now replaced in the USA - see The Blonde On Blonde Missing Pictures. It also has what appears to be the equivalent of a Japanese obi, denoting it's a Millennium Edition (there were several other CDs in this series including Blood On The Tracks and albums by other Columbia artists). Reports are that the CD itself is the same as the 1998 gold CD, even though it's silver. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information that this release does not have CD-TEXT. |

For more details of this release, which contains rare mixes/edits, see 1966

Even though this is a silver CD, it is the same mix as the former UK gold CD (see above). Note the inside of the digipak has the original right hand picture layout with Claudia Cardinale, this time on the left. Thanks to Roger Ford for information and scans. "Blonde On Blonde" - single CD release in "Nice Price" series, Columbia CDCBS 66012 (Australia), early 1990s:
This release only has a single folded card as the front insert with minimal artwork including only two of the inside gatefold pictures. The CD is silver with black and red text. There are two variants, each with four lines of red text to the right of the centre hole, with details shown above.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.

"Blonde On Blonde" - single CD release, Columbia CDCOL 3657 S (South Africa), 1990s:
This release with a 12-page stapled booklet as the front insert was made in "RSA" (Republic of South Africa). It has a silver CD with black/red text.
Thanks to Keith Schweiger for information and scans.

This release is housed in a three-part fold-out digipak and contains a CD version and
SA-CD versions in stereo and 5.1 surround sound split over two discs. It was
necessary to restore the two-disc format of Blonde On Blonde because
the three versions of the album would not fit on one disc. The CD
trays of the
digipak have two unpublished pictures of Bob from 1966. There is an 8-page booklet with more unpublished pictures of Bob from 1966 from the same Jerry Schatzberg shoot as the original album photos. The digipak when first opened (before you unfold it again to reveal the CD trays) reproduces the revised US gatefold sleeve inner layout - see The Blonde On Blonde Missing Pictures. The picture of Claudia Cardinale is sadly missing yet again! The SA-CD design reproduces the Columbia US "360º SOUND" stereo vinyl label used in 1966. The CD and SA-CD stereo layers both feature superior versions of the album tracks, remixed by Michael Brauer as per the 1997 US and Japanese SA-CD-only release. My North American copy illustrated was distributed from Canada, and has the same sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap as the one illustrated for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. |

There is also a boxed set called Singer Songwriter which contains all six albums plus a bonus album, Tapestry by Carole King, exclusive to the set. The set also includes Willie Nelson's 1993 Columbia album Across The Borderline with rarity Heartland (R-0216, see 1993). |

Thanks to Peter Schoefboeck and Stephan Weber for notifying me of these items. Thanks for Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff for scans and confirming this is as expected the 2004 remastered CD release listed immediately above. There was an eight-page stapled booklet as the front insert. The CD itself has a generic 1980s-style CBS vinyl label design. Thanks to Stuart Moore for the Australian version of the same release, Columbia 5123525000. The rear insert has "498678 2" on the spines. Thanks to Derek Davies for scans of a 2005 European version bought in the UK. This has "512352 2" on the spines of the rear insert, the same catalogue number as the remastered 2004 European CD above.

unfolded card sleeve
The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. Blonde On Blonde comes in a folded card sleeve with the pockets for the CDs on the inside centre. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK7" plus "DISCS 7&8". The CDs are different in detail, the US Blonde On Blonde CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312D7" and "88691924312D8", whereas the European CDs have catalogue numbers "88691924312-07" and "88691924312-08". The European CDs were made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
