Original US stereo LP, Columbia CS 8786, 27 May 1963. For the mono release of this album, see Mono Album Releases. For details of the withdrawn original album with four replaced tracks, see 1963. This title was one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in late 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). This period was one of great creativity for Bob, and there are many excellent unreleased tracks from the Freewheelin' sessions - sadly the opportunity to include many of these as bonus tracks or even a bonus CD was missed.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - CD release, Columbia CK 8786 (USA/Canada), early 1990s:

Columbia CK 8786 (USA) - front insert scan by Hans Seegers	The front insert of this release is a 12-page booklet. The front picture is the full album sleeve (stereo crop) without the song titles. The reverse of the front insert and the rear insert have a light yellow background with a green border. The CD itself is silver with black text. Moise Potié has a copy bought in Canada in the mid-1990s with an import sticker (shown below left) and a different CD design. Wil Gielen has two copies of the US release imported into Japan, one with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain, and one with a different obi from an unknown company, see below. "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - CD releases, Columbia CK 8786 (USA for export to Japan), mid 1990s:

Columbia CK 8786 (USA for Japan) - front with obi and stickers, scan by Wil Gielen (Shinseido copy)	Wil Gielen has a mid 1990s copy of the US release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain. The obi was added by the store to import US copies (which were much cheaper than Japanese releases) to provide buyers with information in Japanese. The front of the jewel case has a US “The Nice Price” sticker plus a Japanese “Columbia Trade Mark Licensed” sticker. The CD is slightly different from the US copy owned by Hans Seegers in that the "DIDP" number underneath the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is missing (see detail scan). The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) is a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed in Terre Haute, IN, or one of their other CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC"). It's not present on this CD, which probably means that it was either manufactured by Sony in Japan, or at another US CD pressing plant under contract from Columbia. The price on the obi of ¥1,408 has Japanese characters meaning "excluding tax", which means it was imported into Japan after the introduction of sales tax in 1989. Wil also has a US copy with a different obi from an unknown company. This obi has no price, which means the copy was used for rental. It has the same two front stickers as the Shinseido copy. This time the CD is the same as Hans Seegers' copy above including the US Sony DADC "DIDP" number. Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans. This Canadian CD release has a unique front insert three-fold booklet with a close-up from the regular front sleeve. The picture on the other panel of the booklet is a wider crop, but still doesn't show the full cover. The CD itself is silver with black text.

The logo at top left of the front insert picture (presumably a reproduction of an LP front) is blacked out. The 1989 release is still on the CBS label and has a 16-page booklet. It has a silver/red CD with black text and still has the CBS logo. Éamonn Ó Catháin has noticed that "(C) 1989" is on the rear insert, but surprisingly "(P) 1975" is on the CD itself. The 1990s Spanish release is on the CBS/Sony label and has the CBS/Sony logo on both the rear insert and the CD. It only has an 8-page booklet. The Discos CBS S.A. address was Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid. The rear insert is still dated 1989 and the CD still dated 1975.

The 1997 release is on the Columbia label in the "Nice Price" series and has a slightly different rear insert and CD design, this time with the Columbia logo on both the rear insert and the CD. Again, it only has the 8-page booklet, but it also has a promo insert advertising Time Out Of Mind (not shown). The rear insert is still dated 1989 and the CD still dated 1975.

CBS/Sony 25DP 5282 (1988) - this release has a yellow/brown, black, white and red obi with price ¥2,348. It has a 32-page booklet. It has a silver/red CD with black text. The obi has date "R-11-21" (21 Nov 1988). (There may be an earlier Japanese CD release than this - information required!)

Sony Records SRCS 6332 (1993) - this release in the "Nice Price Line" series has a black, red and white obi with price ¥1,800 and date "93-9-22" (22 Sep 1993). The withdrawal date is "95-9-21" (21 Sep 1995). Also illustrated is a promo copy with a promo sticker on the rear insert. It has a folded out front insert with 24 pages and a grey CD with silver text.

Sony Records SRCS 9240 (1997) - this release is in the "Super 1600 Nice Price" series. It has a red, white, yellow and black obi with price ¥1,600 and date "97-2-1" (1 Feb 1997). The withdrawal date is "99-1-31" (31 Jan 1999). It has a folded out front insert with 24 pages and a dark blue/grey CD with silver text.

The rear insert is a unique orange/brown: the first release rear insert has "Select" at top left, the second release rear insert doesn't. The first release CD is silver with black text, made in Australia by Disctronics, and the second release CD is red with silver text. The second release CD has "Columbia" instead of "CBS", although the album still has "CBS" on the inserts. There was an earlier Australian release, CBS CDCOL 3656 - scans required. CBS/Columbia/Sony Music 19075904532 (Australia) - front with "Gold Series" sticker, scan by Stuart Moore (2018 release)	This "Gold Series" release still uses the "CBS" logo on the front at top left and the "Select" logo at top right. On the rear insert the "Select" logo has gone and the bar code is now different. The rear insert now also has the new "Sony Music" logo introduced in 2009 at bottom right next to the "CBS" logo. The new bar code number "19075904532" is on the spine in place of "465036 2". The CD itself looks similar to the second release above, with "Columbia" and still with catalogue number ""465036 2". The colour is a slightly darker red than that of the previous release, and the disc is now gold instead of silver.

This release is probably pirated, since it has no record company name or catalogue number. There is a number "JPCD 2000532" in the centre of the CD itself. The front insert is a single card. The rear insert has a gramophone logo and an email address: "[email protected]".

It has an 8-page booklet as the front insert. The CD itself is silver/red with black text. Both releases have exactly the same inserts with catalogue number "CDCOL 3656 S" and both CDs are dated 1993. The 1993 CD has "Made in R.S.A. (Republic of South Africa)" and the 2006 CD now has the Sony BMG logo as well as the RISA logo (Recording Industry of South Africa). The 2006 CD catalogue number is just "CDCOL 3656". This CD is a special release as "Rock No. 4", part of a series from Ediciones Altaya called "Estrellas Del Rock [Stars Of Rock]", Barcelona, Spain. It has the folded front insert shown and a unique patterned CD. It was also available with a Bruce Springsteen CD in a cardboard display.

Don't ever say Columbia can't make a joke - the rear of the digipak uses the same picture from the cover photo session used for the bootleg CD The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan Out-takes! The inside of the digipak has two unpublished pictures of Bob from 1963. There is an 8-page booklet with the original sleeve notes and more unpublished pictures of Bob from 1963. The SA-CD design reproduces the Columbia US "360º SOUND" stereo vinyl label used in 1963. My copy is from Canada. The sticker on the outside of the release distributed in Canada is shown below also. The booklet for the Canadian release has been printed in Canada (which may explain the front picture colour difference between the digipak and the booklet). The CD was sourced from the USA.

The American and European editions of Super Audio CDs are almost identical but they have some differences: a different catalogue number (on the spine and on the CDs), some text at bottom of rear of the digipak, the European copyright logos ("SACEM"/"BIEM") on the CDs and the copyright text in the circumference.

Thanks to Jack from Canada for pointing out that the front text on the Canadian release is smaller than on the US and European releases, and the apostrophe after "Freewheelin'" is missing. Jack has also spotted that the reverse of the rear insert on the European release has a complete picture which shows through the clear CD tray, whereas it has a white bar on the left on the US and Canadian releases.

This hybrid SA-CD release of this album is in enhanced stereo only, as on the 2003 Columbia hybrid SA-CD release. It comes in a folded card sleeve with a 12-page stapled booklet. There is also a Mobile Fidelity high quality recording released on heavyweight vinyl playing at 45RPM, which means that it is a 2LP set, listed on the vinyl page for this album.It is a special limited edition but Manuel García Jara's copy is not numbered, so may be a promo. André Wilbers' copy is numbered "02579".

The Japanese release comes in a card sleeve reproducing the LP sleeve with a top obi. Both the promo and the commercial releases have the "DYLAN ALIVE '04" silver sticker with black text on the cellophane sleeve.

Wil Gielen's copy is a promo, with a numbered promo sticker on the rear of the card sleeve. It also has "SAMPLE LOANED" in red in the clear centre of the CD itself. The obi has price ¥1,890 (¥1,800 before tax) and release date "04-8-18" (18 Aug 2004). The original release date is shown as "63-5-27" (27 May 1963) and the withdrawal date as "05-2-17" (17 Feb 2005). There is an insert which folds out to a larger size. The CD has the unusual title "BOB DYLAN THE FREEWHEELIN'".

This release is on a Blu-spec CD, an audio-only disc which was then presumably intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format. The copy shown is still sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The release date is shown as "09-8-26" (26 Aug 2009), the original release date as "63-5-27" (27 May 1963) and the withdrawal date as "10-2-25" (25 Feb 2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray technology. Thanks to Wil Gielen for information and scans.

This 2013 release is one of five Dylan albums in the new "Blu-spec CD2" format, replacing the Blu-spec release from 2009 above. The CD has a blue/white obi with price ¥1,890 (¥1,800 plus sales tax). The release date is 6 Mar 2013 and the withdrawal date is 5 Sep 2013. Translation of Japanese text front sticker by Ben Backhurst from Tokyo Music Japan: "To celebrate the anniversary of Legacy Recordings there will be a prize draw. 3 people will receive high performance Sony headphones. 300 people will receive an exclusive mug. The closing date is 31 August 2013. For details please check the website. This sticker is the proof needed to enter the completion, and will not be reissued." This French language book with CD is the third of a new series of books with CDs from publisher Altaya in association with Sony Music/Legacy called "L'Intégrale Bob Dylan [The Complete Bob Dylan]". The book and CD cost €8.99 and come with the poster shown, which illustrates the entire series on the reverse. The next album is Bringing It All Back Home again priced at €8.99. Michel Pomarede now says that the "posters" are not actually posters, but newsstand display materials. The series was discontinued after four issues. This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK2" plus "DISC 2". The CDs are different in detail, the US The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan CD has catalogue number "88691924312D2", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-02". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are now printed round the circumference of each CD, but the American CD doesn't have a country of origin. The EU copyright details are shown here, but not for the later CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for news that The Complete Album Collection was released in Japan in four decade-related parts, all in 2014. The first part, called Dylan '60s, was released by Sony Music Japan on 26 Mar 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs, which are numbered SICP 30471 to SICP 30481 (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, not included in the US and European sets, is included here as SICP 30479). Side Tracks, to be released at the same time, is SICP 30519-20. All the sleeves will have orange top obis similar to the 2004 Japanese release in card sleeves. The 2013 remastered The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is SICP 30472. It will almost certainly be the same as the 2013 Japanese Blu-spec CD2 release, Sony Music SICP 30025, see above.
