Bob Dylan
This is the first page of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. Because of the length of this page, Bob Dylan CD releases are now here. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |
Unfortunately Columbia forgot to renew the copyright of this album in Europe in 2012, which opened the door for other companies to release unauthorised copies legally. Some unauthorised releases of this album are now here (I have now stopped adding additional unauthorised releases). This mistake was not repeated for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan in 2013!
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 26 January, 2024.
The author of the liner notes, Stacey Williams, was actually Robert Shelton using a pseudonym! Thanks to Dag Braathen for the picture of an early rear sleeve design for CL 1779/CS 8579 with the title Free Wheeling that was eventually used for Bob's second album. The text is the same as the rear sleeve of the released album. Thanks to Arie de Reus for information that this was originally published in a supplement to the UK fan magazine "The Telegraph" many years ago. Jeff Gold says: "The purchase order number at the bottom looks like it was what we call spec type; something ordered by the art department from a type house before everything is finalized, just to be used in the lay out of the cover." Thanks to Pea Hicks for the picture of an April 1962 Columbia US stereo demonstration record. Track 7 on Side 1 has three of Bob's songs identified as being from Freewheeling, despite the fact it had been released a month before this promo with the replaced title. The CL 1779/CS 8579 stereo and mono catalogue numbers are correct. Ian Woodward remembers an article which mentioned a prototype rear sleeve with different liner notes, but I have no details of this.
Side 1: You're No Good; Talkin' New York; In My Time Of Dying; Man Of Constant Sorrow; Fixin' To Die; Pretty Peggy-O; Highway 51
Side 2: Gospel Plow; Baby, Let Me Follow You Down; House Of The Risin' Sun; Freight Train Blues; Song To Woody; See That My Grave Is Kept Clean
For mono releases of this album, see Mono Album Releases.
Out-takes from this album have been officially released as follows:
The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): He Was A Friend Of Mine; Man On The Street, House Carpenter
Also:
Highway 61 Interactive Columbia/Graphix Zone CD-ROM (1995, now out-of-print): House Of The Risin' Sun (traditional) - electric version, 1964 overdub by Tom Wilson with Bob not present (R-0241, see 1995)
As it's now 50 years since this album was first released, it must be time for a "50th Anniversary Edition" set including all unreleased complete takes from the Nov 1961 New York sessions!
Vinyl and Tape Releases
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia CS 8579 (USA), 19 Mar 1962:
The first release of this album came with the
red/black "6-eye" CBS "STEREO FIDELITY" labels and is very rare, as stereo was in its infancy and
few copies were manufactured. (Most copies of the first release of Bob Dylan
were in mono, Columbia CL 1779, see Mono Album
Releases.) There were no white label promo
releases of this album, the only promos are as shown with a red demo stamp on
the rear sleeve and stickers on the labels.
Columbia CS 8579 (USA) - front picture from www.eil.com (demo copy of first release with silver star sticker) |
The front sleeve has a red stereo/arrows logo and the picture shows the top of Bob's hat and three tuning pegs on the guitar (the mono sleeve has a lower crop and shows only one peg but much more of Bob's hand). There are two variants of the rear sleeve, the first omits the producer credit for John Hammond below "BOB DYLAN" and the second includes it. I initially thought this was an error that was quickly corrected, but copies exist of the second release record in this sleeve. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was correctly titled on both the rear sleeve and the record labels. |

Columbia CS 8579 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (first release variant 2, "BOB DYLAN" on one line, no songs listed above centre hole) |
Different numbers from "1" to "8", plus other symbols, can be
printed on the rear sleeve, usually at bottom right, I now know this denoted
the printer and/or sleeve fabricator. For examples, see below.
|
Gerd Rundel has also found the copy shown above on eBay of the first commercial release (first release variant 1, with "BOB DYLAN" on two lines and no songs listed above the centre hole) with a demonstration sticker on Side 1 that apparently reads "FOR DEMONSTRATION USE ONLY/... FOR SALE". "NOT FOR SALE" would be expected (as above and below in John Napa's photo and Gerd's scan), and the text is aligned as if the word "NOT" should be present (in this case "NOT" has been erased from the scan by the eBay seller to circumvent any possible legal repercussions). This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1E, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1F. |

Columbia CS 8192 (USA) - detail of Side 1 with "D" and eleven strokes (no Dylan) |
Steven Fant has a copy with the first release variant 1 sleeve without a silver star sticker on the front and without "Produced by John Hammond" on the rear. There is an "8" on the rear sleeve plus a purple stamp with "CX/200". "8" indicates the sleeve was fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co., probably at Terre Haute, IN. The record comes in a plain white inner sleeve and has first release variant 3 labels, with "BOB DYLAN" on one line and one song listed above the centre holes. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1D, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1C. It also has what looks like "H 1" handwritten in the vinyl on both sides. Steven has a stereo copy of Dave Brubeck's Time Out album (Columbia CS 8192) with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 47855-2AL, Side 2 - XSM 47856-2BF plus a "D" followed by eleven strokes on Side 1 only. |
Tim Norford has a copy with the first release variant 2, sleeve with
"Produced by John Hammond" under "BOB DYLAN" but no printer
code at
rear bottom right. There is no silver star on the front sleeve. The record
comes in the original blue/white striped inner sleeve and has first release
variant 1, labels with "BOB DYLAN" on two lines and no songs listed
above the centre hole. The record of this copy again has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1E, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1F.
Lance Jacobs has a first-press 6 eye stereo copy of CS8579. On the front sleeve Bob’s hat is not cropped and has "STEREO"/arrows across the top. On the rear sleeve "Produced by John Hammond" does not appear andthere is an "8" at bottom right. The record comes in the grey striped inner sleeve and has Bob Dylan on one line and two songs above the centre hole (variant 4). The matrix numbers are: Side 1 - 55621-1D, Side 2 - 55622-1C.
I have found four "6-eye" label variants so far. To illustrate the differences between the variants of the first release
"6-eye" record labels, I have repeated them below:
|
Thanks to John Napa for pictures of a demonstration copy of this first release, again with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1E, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1F. This copy has a red stamp on the back sleeve and the silver star on the front just like the one from www.eil.com shown, found by Jean-Pol Hiernaux. The rear sleeve has a "4" at bottom right ("4" indicated that Imperial Packing Co., Inc. of Indianapolis, IN, fabricated that particular sleeve). The record label has "BOB DYLAN" on two lines and no songs listed above the centre hole. The song titles are listed on ten lines. Gerd Rundel has a commercial copy with the same matrix numbers, the first variant sleeve without the John Hammond credit, and "8" at the rear sleeve bottom right ("8" indicated that the sleeve was made by Modern Album Finishing Co., Terre Haute, IN). This copy has a generic Columbia US inner sleeve with blue stripes. Sergio Magnacca has a copy with labels of this design with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1B, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1A. Max from Italy has a copy of this release with a silver star sticker, a "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" red rubber stamp on the rear sleeve as shown above, and a "4" at the bottom of the rear sleeve (Imperial Packing Co., Inc., Indianapolis, IN). This copy again has a generic Columbia US inner sleeve with blue stripes. The record has first release variant 1 labels. Gerd Rundel has an identical copy with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1E, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1F (as for several copies listed above). Deepak Sharma has a copy without a silver star on the front sleeve with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1A, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1B. It has "63" and "3" at the bottom of the rear sleeve. ("3" was also used by Modern Album Finishing Co., Terre Haute, IN.) |
|
Columbia CS 8579 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Manuel García Jara (first release variant 2, "BOB DYLAN" on one line, no songs listed above centre hole) |
Manuel García Jara has a copy with a second variant "6-eye" record label design in that "BOB DYLAN" is on one line instead of two, and there are still no songs above the centre hole. The song titles are listed on eight lines instead of ten. The front sleeve has no silver star sticker, and the rear sleeve has the text "Produced by John Hammond" plus a "2" at bottom right (Imperial Paper Box Corp., Brooklyn, NY). The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1C, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1D. |
Columbia CS 8579 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (first release variant 2, "BOB DYLAN" on one line, no songs listed above centre hole) |
|
Hans Seegers' copy has a third variant "6-eye" label design in that "BOB DYLAN" is on one line instead of two, and one song is listed above the centre hole. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1D, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1D. It has an "8" in the bottom right hand corner of the rear sleeve next to the track timings panel (Modern Album Finishing Co., Terre Haute, IN). Gerd Rundel also has a copy of the album with the third 1962 variant "6-eye" labels. It comes in the variant of the sleeve with "Produced by John Hammond" below "BOB DYLAN" on the rear. It has what looks like a pink "D" stamped in the rear top right (so may be a demo copy) and a "2" at bottom right (Imperial Paper Box Corp., Brooklyn, NY). The stamped matrix numbers are: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1A, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1B. |
|
|
Cosimino Pecere has a copy of the first release with stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1C, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1D with a fourth variant "6-eye" label design in that two songs are listed above the centre hole. Gerd Rundel has a copy of the same variant which also has an "8" printed on the rear sleeve at bottom right, in a different position and typeface from the "8" on Hans Seegers' copy above, but also made by Modern Album Finishing Co., Terre Haute, IN. |
|
This means as well as two variants of the sleeve there are four different
"6-eye" label styles for the first release with "BOB DYLAN" on two
lines or one, and a different number of lines songs listed above the centre hole
- none, one or two! David Eckstrom is of the
opinion that the variations in the "6-eye" designs occur because the examples
came from different Columbia US pressing plants, at Pitman, NJ, Terre Haute,
IN, and Santa Maria, CA.
As well as the blue and grey striped inner sleeves shown above, copies of this record with the "6-eye" labels can be found in a colour Columbia US picture sleeve showing details of contemporary albums by other Columbia artists. Copies of Carolyn Hester's first album featuring Bob on harmonica can also be found in this inner sleeve, see 1962. Gerd Rundel has a copy with the third variant "6-eye" record labels with a front price sticker for $2.86, discounted from the full price of £4.86 (Jennifer Siedenburg's copy above has a $4.98 price sticker). The rear sleeve is the second variant with "Produced by John Hammond" and has a blocky "2" printed at bottom right. The "2" indicates that the sleeve was fabricated by Imperial Paper Box Corp. of Brooklyn, NY. This copy also comes in the colour Columbia US picture sleeve shown.
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP reissues, Columbia CS 8579 (USA), late 1962 onwards:
Columbia CS 8579 (USA), late 1962 to early 1970s:
|
The second release of CS 8579 in late 1962 has the same
front sleeve with three guitar tuning pegs visible at top right (the

picture is missing the top). The text on the rear sleeve next to the Columbia logo is in a slightly different typeface. The record has red Columbia "360º SOUND/STEREO" labels, firstly with the logo in black without arrows, then in black with arrows (not shown), then in white with arrows. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 label. There are six variants of the 1960s-style labels, with a single "COLUMBIA" at the top and "STEREO" at the bottom. |

|
The 1960s second release variants so far notified to me are:
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information that the label design with white arrows was introduced in Jul/Aug 1965 (Bringing It All Back Home had labels with black arrows on original release in Mar 1965, and Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds still had labels with black arrows on original release in Jun 1965).
Other sleeve variants:
Sergio Mariano Romay has two copies of the album where the record has labels of what I've called the second release, fourth variant above. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 label above the centre hole, the "STEREO"/"360º SOUND" logo is in white, with arrows but omitting "NONBREAKABLE". Both sleeve have the same rear sleeve details at top right as does Hans Seegers' copy above. Austin Cowden has a second release copy with the black "STEREO"/arrows logo on the labels and "1F"/"1F" matrix numbers that comes in a first release sleeve with a silver star sticker on the front as above, and no demo stamp on the rear.
The first copy has a rear sleeve with "Produced by John Hammond" missing and a "5" at bottom right. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1G, Side 2 = XSM-55622-1C. The second copy has a rear sleeve with "Produced by John Hammond" present and a "5" at bottom right. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1A 2 P, Side 2 = XSM-55622-1L 1 P.
The "5" and "7" on the rear sleeve both indicate reissue sleeves made by Modern Album Finishing Co., Terre Haute, IN.

Columbia CS 8579 (USA) - detail of inner sleeve front, scan by Gerd Rundel
(1969-70 release - dated 1970, Terre Haute address at bottom right)
The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-1J, Side 2 - XSM 55622-1L. Like 1969-70 Columbia US copies of Another Side Of Bob Dylan and John Wesley Harding shown on those album pages, this album comes in a picture inner sleeve advertising Columbia colour posters, this time dated 1970. The reply address to send for posters is Columbia Records, Terre Haute, IN.
Columbia CS 8579 (USA), early 1970s:
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia KCS 8579 (USA), early 1970s:
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, Columbia PC 8579 (USA), late 1970s:
Fredrik Wennerberg has a copy in the same sleeve as Lars M. Banke's export copy shown below with "Stereo" blacked out and just "8579" on the front and rear sleeve. The spine has "PC 8579". There are no symbols on the rear sleeve as below. The record again has 1970s style red labels with Columbia in yellow round the edge, this time with catalogue number "PC 8579" as shown. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 label. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-2C, Side 2 - XSM 55622-1AF.
Proving that no vinyl Dylan album is exactly like any other, Sean Flores has a hybrid 1970s copy. He says:
"I think I found another variation of the 1970s release of Bob Dylan. The copy I found has characteristics of both the early 1970s version and the 1975 reissue. Here is the breakdown:
Cover- Mono Number in oval top left with “new” CBS logo. Stereo Blacked out. Two tuning pegs.
Spine has "PC 8579"
Rear has “S” under logo (indicates Santa Maria, CA - AF), but no “A” or “B” stamp at the end of the last copy column. "KCS 8579" below the Columbia logo upper right.
Vinyl - "PC 8579" on label with "XSM 55621/55622" respectively opposite the catalogue numbers.
Matrix numbers - Side 1 reads XSM-55622-1J with a space and an illegible number stamped next. Side 2 reads XSM-55622-1J followed by a small “0” and C 7 etched on the opposite side (“handwritten”).
Most of the characteristics point to the early 1970s version with the exception of the markings on the spine and PC 8579 on the vinyl label. Seems like a hybrid of the two versions."
Thanks to Sean Flores and Fredrik Wennerberg for information.
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia JC 8579/PC 8579 (USA), 1980s:
Columbia PC 8579 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s
release - no symbol at bottom right)
Columbia JC 8579/PC 8579 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (alternate
1980s release
- heart symbol on right, made at Pitman, NJ)
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy bought in 1987 with a heavy cardboard sleeve that has some differences from Gerd Rundel's. The record labels are exactly the same as Gerd's. The front sleeve has: just “8579” in circle, no mono catalogue number (same as 1975 release); The new Columbia logo/catalogue number layout and a blacked out "STEREO"/arrows logo; the top of Bob's cap visible above the blacked out rectangle and two and a half tuning pegs. On the upper spine there is a transparent sticker with “JC 8579”, possibly hiding “PC 8579” or “KCS 8579”. On the rear sleeve at top right is “PC 8579” (not just "8579") and a heart symbol indicating Pitman, NJ, at bottom right. The record has 1970s style red labels with catalogue number “JC 8579” and Columbia logos in yellow round the edge. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled “She’s No Good” on the Side 1 label. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-1AB, Side 2 - XSM 55622-1AF (later than Gerd's).
David Plentus has a copy of the album with the 1980s release sleeve and the third release labels with the ring of "Columbia" logos. There was obviously a period of overlap between releases.
Lars M. Banke has a copy of the album found in Europe in this alternate 1980s release sleeve with a gold stamp on the rear with text "For Governmental Sale Only". This must have been intended for sale to US services personnel overseas. The record has labels with catalogue number "PC 8579". This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621 1AB, Side 2 - XSM 55622 1AE (similar to those of Sergio's copy).
Thanks to Gerd Rundel, David Plentus, Sergio Mariano Romay and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

Sergio Mariano Romay has a sealed copy bought in Argentina with a record store sticker covering the "NICE PRICE" sticker on the front sleeve at top left. There is a second record store sticker at front top right.
The 2001 release (also PC 8579) was the same as the 1990s release except with a printed sticker promoting the "180gm vinyl" release on the front sleeve.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, David Plentus and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan" - 180gm stereo vinyl 2LP releases, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab LMF 420-2 (USA), May 2013/Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab MFSL 2-420 (USA), 2014:
LP 1
Side 1: You're No Good; Talkin' New York; In My Time of Dyin'; Man of Constant Sorrow
Side 2: Fixin' to Die; Pretty Peggy-O; Highway 51
LP 2
Side 3: Gospel Plow; Baby, Let Me Follow You Down; House of the Risin' Sun
Side 4: Freight Train Blues; Song to Woody; See That My Grave Is Kept Clean
Gerd Rundel's test pressing was made by RTI (Record Technology Inc.) for Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Each record comes in a plain white cut out sleeve. Sides 1 and 3 have generic RTI labels and are dated 02 Jul 2013, while Sides 2 and 4 have plain white labels. The test pressing records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 2-420 A1 plus 22174.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 2-420 B1 plus 22174.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 3 - MFSL 2-420 C1 plus 22174.3 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 4 - MFSL 2-420 D2 plus 22207.4 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite. In the matrix numbers, “KW @ MoFi” means that the records were mastered by Krieg Wunderlich of Mobile Fidelity.
The commercial release was a Limited Edition of 3000 copies. The records come in a gatefold sleeve numbered at bottom left of the rear (obscured on the scan).
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

The front sleeve has not been altered, but three instances of "Columbia" on the rear sleeve have been obscured with black marker pen. The record has black ring-shaped stickers on the labels covering the ring of Columbia logos. As with regular US copies of PC 8579 above, Track 1 on Side 1 is wrongly titled "She's No Good". The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621 – 20 (2D?), Side 2 – XSM 55622 – 1AF.

Columbia KCS 8579 (Canada) - front of slipcase with cut-out showing tape label, scan by Manuel García Jara |
This release has a red tape cartridge in a black slipcase which has a front cut-out to show the cartridge label. There is no text on the reverse of the tape cartridge. The tape cartridge looks identical to the US release - only the slipcase is Canada-specific. The tracks have been reordered to make the four programmes of roughly equal length. Because House Of The Risin' Sun is split over two programmes this is also classed as a rarity, which I have listed in 1975 because I don't know the exact release year. |

Columbia CS 8579 (Canada) - detail of 1965 release Side 2, scan by Gerd Rundel (variant 2 - still "NON-BREAKABLE" with hyphen) |
The first copy shown of the 1965 release of this album in Canada has a unique black stamp on the front sleeve with the text "PLAYABLE ON MONO EQUIPMENT. FOR BEST RESULTS USE STEREO NEEDLE". The rear sleeve is the same as for the 1962 release but without the mono catalogue number printed to the left of the Columbia logo in the top right hand corner. This copy has "LITHO IN CANADA" printed on the spine.
The record has red Columbia labels with the black "360º SOUND/STEREO" logo with arrows like the 1965 US release shown above. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is again incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 record label. Gerd Rundel's Side 1 label has “NON-BREAKABLE” (with hyphen) left of the centre hole while the Side 2 label has “NONBREAKABLE” (no hyphen). Ger Hemel has found a copy on Discogs that comes with a different front sleeve without the black stamp at top left. Also "LITHO IN CAN" is printed vertically at front bottom right instead of on the spine. The record labels are the same as Gerd's with one surprising difference - this time the Side 1 label has “NONBREAKABLE” (no hyphen) left of the centre hole while the Side 2 label has “NON-BREAKABLE” (with hyphen)! I can only assume both variants of record label were used interchangeably. The records of both copies shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1F, Side 2 - XSM-55622-1F.
Columbia CS 8579 (Canada), reissued 1967 (twice):
There are two record label variants:
Both record labels have “MANUFACTURED BY COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD”. The record of the second variant shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-1K, Side 2 - XSM 55622-1AD.

Columbia KCS 8579 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel
(both mid-1970s releases -
one line of bottom text plus "SHOREPAK CAN" at
bottom left)
The mid-1970s album (dating from between 1972 and 1976) is now "KCS 8579" and has a similar sleeve to that of the 1967 albums, still with the red "STEREO"/arrows logo at front top centre. Looking closely at the “KCS 8579” catalogue number at front top left, there is a faint shadow print almost in the same position, maybe obscuring the previous "CS 8579". The sleeve has “LITHO IN CANADA” on the spine. “SHOREPAK CAN. PAT. NO. 758888, 1967” is again printed at rear bottom left in small text.
There are two minimally different rear sleeve variants for this release: "KCS 8579" at top right below "STEREO" is printed in different positions, the first variant has it centred (as the 1967 rear sleeve) and the second variant has it offset to the right (as it is on Hans' 1976 release sleeve).
The record again has new-style red Columbia labels with a ring of Columbia logos in yellow round the circumference with text "MANUFACTURED BY COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD." as the 1967 and early 1970s releases on the bottom of the labels. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was again incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 record label.

Columbia KCS 8579 (Canada) - detail of rear, scan by Hans Seegers (1976
release - two lines of bottom
text, "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.", "SHOREPAK CAN" missing)
Hans Seegers' 1976 copy has the same front sleeve as the mid-1970s copy above. The rear sleeve now has CBS Records Canada Ltd. information at the bottom (Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976). The 1976 record again has red new-style Columbia labels now with text "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.". You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was again incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 record label.
Gerd Rundel has a 1976 copy in the earlier "SHOREPAK CAN" sleeve as above. The record labels are the same as those of Hans' copy with "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.". The record of Gerd's copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621-1A, 2-H: (opposite), Side 2 - XSM-55622-1A, 2-HD: (opposite).

"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia KCS 8579 (Canada for export), mid-1970s:
In the liner notes on the rear sleeve of the first copy the name "Columbia Records" has not been obscured. On the second copy every occurrence of "Columbia" on the front and rear of the sleeve, including "Columbia Records" in the liner notes has been obscured with black marker pen. The second record has red ring-shaped stickers over the ring of Columbia logos round the circumference of the labels.

not obscured, scan by Lars M. Banke (third copy, fourth copy is the same)
Lars M. Banke has a third copy of the 1970s Canadian release KCS 8579 bought in Scandinavia that this time has had the "Columbia" logos on the front and rear sleeves obscured with black circular stickers. The Columbia Canada information at the bottom of the rear sleeve is not obscured. On the record labels there are black ring-shaped stickers over the ring of "Columbia" logos.
Columbia KCS 8579 (Canada for export) - detail of rear with two instances
of "Columbia" obscured, scan by Lars
M. Banke (fifth copy)
Lars' fifth export copy has black circular stickers on the sleeve and black ring-shaped stickers on the record labels, like the third copy. This time two instances of "Columbia" have also been obscured at the bottom of the rear sleeve. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621 1B 2HD, Side 2 - XSM-55622 1A 2HD.
Lars' sixth export copy has a black circular stickers on the rear sleeve only and black ring-shaped stickers on the record labels, like the third and fifth copies. This time one instance of "Columbia" has also been obscured at the top of the rear sleeve, although the bottom occurrences have not been obscured. The record of this copy again has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-55621 1B 2HD, Side 2 - XSM-55622 1A 2HD.

Gerd Rundel's copy comes in the same sleeve as
Per Erik Dahlberg's copy, but has record labels similar to the 1965 release
labels. To the right of the centre hole the catalogue number is given as "SBPG

later labels. Note the interesting differences below on the sleeve and record labels between Per Erik Dahlberg's copy and the copy of the first generally available UK commercial stereo release from 1965 supplied by Henry V. Bell, which I previously displayed as the first release. Comparison of 1962 and 1965 releases:
Sleeve front: has the same stereo/arrows logo in the left hand top corner, but has "SBPG 62022" under the logo with small, thick letters in the same size as the numbers (this is absent on the UK 1965 release). The text "MONAURAL CL-1779" (the US mono catalogue number also on the first US stereo releases above) has been obscured immediately above the CBS logo. The sleeve was printed by Garrod & Lofthouse, although they're uncredited.
Sleeve back: has the stereo/arrows logo in the left hand top corner. "SBPG 62022" is situated top left of CBS logo on right with thick letters and numbers and (CS 8579) in smaller text exactly under the numbers. Bottom right is clean under "...straight up" and bottom left has "CBS IS A TRADEMARK OF COLUMBIA BROADCASTING SYSTEM INC." only. It has three folded-over flaps. The spine has both numbers: SBPG 62022 on lower half and CS 8579 near logo on upper half. The latter can be seen on the front scan.
Textured label: Side 1: "BOB DYLAN" is offset to the left of logo and the speed is given as just "33". On the top right of the logo is "SBPG62022" in large thick text, written together without a space between the letters and the numbers. Below is (CS 8579) in thinner letters .Below the copyright information is "SBPG-62022 1Y". (The "Y" after the number on label below "Leeds Music" stands for stereo on old CBS labels and in the matrix numbers. The corresponding mono issues had an "L" instead.) Henry V. Bell's copy has an "A" here. This label also correctly lists the first song title as "You're No Good" - this was changed to the incorrect title of "She's No Good" on Gerd Rundel and Henry V. Bell's copies and all subsequent releases in the same way as the US releases. This dates Henry V. Bell's copy as 1965 at the earliest, and it must have been sold simultaneously with the US pasted-over copies (see above).
Matrix numbers (stamped): Side 1 - "SBPG 62022 1YX2 //420", Side 2 - "SBPG V 62022 V 2Y V 2//420". The three small signs splitting up the elements of the Side 2 matrix number are actually inverted triangles, which I've shown as "V".
CBS
SBPG 62022 (UK) - 1962 release, detail of Side 2 with
Philips matrix number, scan
by Gerd Rundel
As can be seen, the 1962 and 1965 UK sourced releases of SBPG 62022 had the "STEREO" with arrows logo boldly on both front and back. This isn't placed in exactly the same position on the two copies shown, and may have been overprinted. It was missing from the 1968-69 reissue below, when CBS started to use the same sleeves for both stereo and mono albums (which were tailing off). The 1968-69 album has a panel at the bottom of the rear sleeve stating that stereo albums can be played on mono record players. The pasted-over US release above dates from 1965, and must have been imported to meet demand. There are also label differences - for example, on the 1962 and 1965 releases "BOB DYLAN" is offset to the left, and the record speed is given as just "33" instead of "33⅓" on the 1968-69 orange labels. The matrix numbers of Gerd Rundel and Henry V. Bell's copies are: Side 1 - SBPG 62022 A, Side 2 - SBPG 62022 B. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding a 1965 copy on eBay (sleeve and record labels exactly as shown, Arie de Reus' sleeve, Gerd Rundel's labels) that the seller claims to have been pressed by EMI. The seller describes the matrix numbers as "MATRICES : A B MOTHER STAMPERS 1M 1R" I have no idea exactly what this means, but it may mean the record has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55661–1M, Side 2 - XSM 55662–1R.
CBS SBPG 62022 (UK) - 1968-69 releases:

text lines in box, printer's

CBS SBPG 62022 (UK), 1968-69 release - detail of alternate rear,
photocopy by Paul Shenton (two text lines in box, no printer's name
at bottom right - this copy has third variant labels with track 6 on Side 2
credited to "Leeds Music")
The 1968-69 release of this album has a sleeve with a front like the UK mono release, with no "STEREO"/arrows logo, and "62022" below the CBS logo. The rear sleeve also has no "STEREO"/arrows logo, but it does have stereo information in a box at the bottom. Hans Seegers' copy has printer's name Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd. at bottom right, but Paul Shenton has a copy (with the third variant labels) with just "Patent Pending" and no printer's name.
Mick Robinson and Rene Jørgensen have copies of the 1968-69 release with different publishing credits on the Side 2 label - "1&5 Duchess, 2&6 Cop. Con., 3&4 Trad". Hans Seegers' copy has "1&5 Duchess, 2 Cop. Con., 3&4 Trad, 6 Leeds Music Ltd." - this was a later version, changed because of a copyright settlement for See That My Grave Is Kept Clean by Blind Lemon Jefferson. The record of Rene's copy comes in a 1970 CBS UK generic inner sleeve, the same as Record 1 of my copy of Self Portrait. It has matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62022 A, Side 2 - SBPG 62022 B.
Ian Woodward's 1968-69 copy has a mono sleeve with three folded-over flaps and a white "STEREO"/arrows sticker. The record labels are almost the same as Rene Jørgensen's with the same publishing credits, the only noticeable difference being the playing speed "33⅓" in a different type face. The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62022 A, Side 2 - SBPG 62022 B with an "A" on Side 1 that is not present on Side 2.

detail of rear, photocopy by Paul Shenton (three text lines in box,
printer's name Ernest J. Day at bottom right, no folded-over flaps)
The rear sleeve is completely new - it has just "62022" below the CBS logo at top right, but the stereo information in the text box has been expanded to three lines, unlike any other shown here. The sleeve was printed by Ernest J. Day & Co., Ltd., London W11. The construction of the sleeve is unusual. It is made of two separate pieces of card with the front sleeve flaps folded under. This method of construction does not allow for a proper spine. The spine text is on the rear half in roughly the same place as on other sleeves, but in a very fine font with "BOB DYLAN" squeezed up and "62022" spaced out. When the two pieces of card were glued together they were slightly misaligned, so that the top of "62022" is hidden under the front half.

The record labels of the first copy have catalogue number "Sbpg 62022" right of the centre hole and different copyright text from that of the second copy. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62022 A, Side 2 - SBPG 62022 B.
The record labels of the second copy have catalogue number "S 62022" right of the centre hole. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-62022-A-2 (handwritten), Side 2 - SBPG 62022 B (stamped).

CBS BPG 62022 (UK), late 1970s release - detail of rear, scan by Gerd
Rundel
(no text box, "LC|0149" in a capsule at bottom right)
Gerd Rundel has a rare late 1970s copy in the same sleeve as Hans' copy but with mixed record labels. Side 1 has the correct “S BPG 62022” stereo catalogue number to the right of the centre hole while Side 2 has the incorrect "BPG 62022" mono catalogue number. Side 2 looks the same as Hans' late 1970's release. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-62022-A-2 (handwritten), 32001 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS-S-62022-B-4 (handwritten), 32001 (stamped).
Gerd Rundel has a second late 1970s variant with a sleeve that looks the same as that listed for the mid-1970s release but the text box at bottom rear (CBS STEREO/MONO playability information) is now missing. There is also no "WARNING" text as on the bottom of the rear sleeve of Hans' copy above. There is no "LC|0149" capsule on the sleeve, but there is on the record labels. The catalogue number on the record labels is again “BPG 62022” but they are different from those of Hans' copy with no text on the bottom of the labels, and MADE IN ENGLAND” in the circumference text. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-62022-A-2 (handwritten), 32001 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS 32001 B5 (handwritten), 62022 (handwritten).

CBS 32001 (UK), 1980s releases - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (same as late 1970s release)
The 1982 UK release had a new catalogue number - "32001". The rear sleeve is the same as the late 1970s release above but with the new catalogue number below the CBS logo on the rear sleeve. There is no catalogue number on the front sleeve. There are three orange/yellow CBS record label variants of "CBS 32001":
- "MADE IN ENGLAND" at the bottom of the label (two sub-variants, one with "CBS 32001", one with "S CBS 32001")
"MADE IN ENGLAND" moved to the circumference text on the right, no text at the bottom of the label
- "MADE IN ENGLAND" again in the circumference text on the right, CBS copyright information at the bottom of the label
(The next variant, with "MADE IN ENGLAND" again in the circumference text on the right and the CBS copyright info moved from the bottom of the record label to the circumference text, can be found on the copy below with red CBS labels.)
On all variants You're No Good on Side 1 is wrongly listed as "She's No Good". "BOB DYLAN" is listed twice.
Gerd Rundel's first variant copy comes in the sleeve shown without the front stickers. The record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-62022-A-2 (handwritten), 32001 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS-S-62022-B-4 (handwritten), CBS-S-32001 (stamped). Gerd has an alternate first variant copy in the same sleeve and where the record has exactly the same matrix numbers. The only difference is that the record labels have catalogue number "S CBS 32001" to the right of the centre hole instead of just "CBS 32001". Ian Woodward has a first variant copy where the matrix numbers are:: Side 1 - 62002-A-4, Side 2 - 62002-B-4.
Manuel García Jara's second variant copy shown has a big "NICE PRICE" sticker on the front sleeve as well as a record store sticker with price £2.99. The record of Manuel's copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-62022-A-2 (handwritten) 32001 (stamped), Side 2 - CBS 32001 B5 62022 (handwritten). Hans Seegers' third variant copy has a second variant record label on Side 2!

CBS 32001 was reissued in the late 1980s with red CBS labels, with "MADE IN ENGLAND" and the CBS copyright info in the circumference text and no text at the bottom of the label. The catalogue number on the record labels is "S CBS 32001", like the alternate first 1982 variant above. As always, track 1 on the Side 1 label is wrongly listed as "She's No Good". "BOB DYLAN" is listed twice.
Columbia COL 32001 (UK), early 1990s:
Columbia COL 32001 (UK) - detail of rear, scan by
Lars M. Banke
This early 1990s release has "Columbia" on the sleeve and record labels, with "COL 32001" and "S CBS 32001" on the record labels. The front sleeve has an overprinted square at top left, where the CBS logo was previously found on the 1980s and earlier releases. The rear sleeve has a barcode at top right. The red Columbia labels have no text at the bottom, and also do not have "MADE ON ENGLAND" in the circumference text. This is probably because the record was now made in Holland. Again, track 1 on the Side 1 label is wrongly listed as "She's No Good". "BOB DYLAN" is listed twice.

CBS 40-62022 (UK), early 1970s:
This cassette with the original catalogue number is believed to be first UK cassette release. It comes in a sharp-edged case with a black textured back. There is a two-fold insert with a fascinating "Tape Collectors" promotion of cassette ownership on the inside. The address of CBS Records is 28 Theobalds Road, London WC1X 8PB, which was the postal address of the company from when the "WC1X 8PB" postcode was introduced in early 1970 up to late 1973. The cassette is off-white with orange CBS paper labels. Track 1 is mistitled "She's No Good" twice on the outside of the cassette insert and also on the Side 1 label.
CBS 40-62022 (UK), mid-1970s:
CBS 40-32001 (UK), 1982 (two variants):
The CBS 40-32001 copy owned by Paul Shenton (variant 2) has a longer insert with an additional "Nice Price" flap on both sides listing other CBS albums in the series. There is a "Nice Price" sticker on the front of the cassette case with price £2.99. The cassette is made of grey plastic with blue text - there are no paper labels. It has the same text layout on both sides as the variant 1 1980s cassette with black text.

For the mono release of this album, CBS BP-233206, see

Releases.
You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was
correctly titled on both the sleeve and the Side 1 record label of all these
releases.
CBS SBP-233206 (Australia), 1965, reissued late 1960s:
All the record labels shown have round the circumference at the bottom the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)
CBS SBP-233206 (Australia), mid-1970s:
CBS SBP-233206 (Australia), late 1970s ("Two For One" release):
It was later released as a "Two For One" (CBS 241056) in a gatefold sleeve with The Times They Are A-Changin', the commercial copy of this record also has orange/yellow labels but with a slightly different text layout and longer copyright information along the bottom edge (see detailed scan from Lars M. Banke's copy below). The promo record has white CBS Australia promo labels. The Bob Dylan record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX145911 241056 S1, Side 2 - ^MX145912 241056 SP206 S2 REC 2.
Lars M. Banke also has two copies of the re-release with orange/yellow labels and with long copyright text at the bottom. One has a sleeve with "STEREO can also be played on mono equipment" on the front sleeve next to the CBS logo in the upper left corner and the other has a sleeve without "STEREO can also be played on mono equipment". The first one is like the sleeve of the re-release with yellow/red labels and with short copyright text at the bottom of the labels above. The matrix numbers for the copy with the long copyright text on the label and with the stereo text on the sleeve is the same as the numbers for the copy without the stereo text.
CBS SBP-233206 (Australia), late 1970s:
Lars M. Banke's late 1970s copy looks the same as the one in the "Two For One" release. The record has hard to read handwritten matrix numbers that look like: Side 1 - MX145911 SBP 233206-1, Side 2 - MX145912-B SBP 233206-2.

"Bob Dylan" - stereo cassette release, CBS 462835 4 (Australia), 1988:
The outside of the cassette insert of this Australian tape from the "Select" series comes in the same design as the equivalent "Select" CD release, CBS 462835 2, see here. The cassette is black plastic with silver text, there are no paper labels.

CBS SBP 474236 (New Zealand) - front scan by Bill Hester (both releases) |
For the mono release of this album, CBS BP-473216, see
Mono Album
Releases. The first release of this album was manufactured in New Zealand in 1973-74, not 1965
as previously listed. There is no
Stereo indication on the sleeve apart from the "SBP" catalogue number. The rear
sleeve has no folded-over flaps, which shows it is from 1973 or later, but
does not have "Marketed by Phonogram", introduced during 1974. The record has orange
CBS labels. On Side 1 "You're No Good" is mistitled "She's No Good" and
"Pretty Peggy-O" is mistitled "Pretty Peggo-O". The later 1970s release comes in the same sleeve, but the record now has orange/yellow CBS labels. The song title mistakes on Side 1 remain. The copy of the later 1970s record shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBP 474236 A 5598 700, Side 2 - SBP 474236 B 55989 700. |

"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia CS 8579 (Singapore), 1965:
CBS CS 8579 (Singapore) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (both variants) |
Norman Healy has a copy of CS 8579 sold in Singapore which looks like the second American stereo release from 1965 (the sleeve says 'Produced by John Hammond" etc as shown above). However, the disc has "You're No Good" not "She's No Good" on the label. Like the example above, it has three "CBS" white logos on the disc labels which are printed, not pasted on. It also has the "360° SOUND"/"STEREO" logos without arrows. It looks like the mono Singapore release (see Mono Album Releases), except it is in stereo. The sleeve has an English-language ink stamp on it showing that it came from Kwong Hing Lee's shop in Sarawak (Sarawak was still a British colony at the time of the record's release but is now part of Malaysia). Thanks to Tim Dunn for details of a copy on eBay which sounds exactly the same. Gerd Rundel's first Singaporean copy has a US-printed sleeve where "Columbia" has been pasted over with "CBS" at top right of the rear sleeve. "You're No Good" is correct on the Side 1 label and "NONBREAKABLE" left to the centre hole. The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621, Side 2 - XSM 55622. |

|
Columbia CS 8579 (Singapore) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (similar to second US release third variant with white "STEREO" logo, no arrows, with "NONBREAKABLE") |
The record inside the first variant sleeve shown here had US second release variant 3 labels as above. On these second release variant 3 labels the track listing on Side 1 is left aligned, while on the eBay copy exported to the UK above it is centred. The track listings on both Side 2s are centred.
The record inside the second variant sleeve shown here had US second release fifth variant labels as above. Information about these records is that the records were made in the USA while the record labels were printed locally using US designs but with "CBS" instead of Columbia, which is why they don't have stickers. Sleeves with Columbia uncovered or with "CBS" stickers were imported from the USA, while sleeves with "CBS" printed were sourced locally. CBS had a record pressing facility in Singapore from 1967, so records after that were sourced locally.
CBS CS 8579 - copy for export to possibly Far East (Singapore/Malaysia):
CBS CS 8579 - stereo copy in US mono sleeve (Singapore):
This unusual copy comes in a US mono sleeve with a "stereo" sticker on the front at top left. The rear sleeve has a "7" at bottom right, which means it's a reissue of a sleeve originally fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co., probably at Terre Haute, IN. The record labels are similar to those of the first one shown above in this section, with three CBS logos, track 1 on Side 1 shown correctly as You're No Good, "NONBREAKABLE", and a white "STEREO/360 SOUND" logo with no arrows. The difference is that the songs on Side 1 are now centred.

"Bob Dylan Vol. 3" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS YS-611-C (Japan), May 1966:
For the Japanese CBS Bob Dylan and Bob Dylan Vol. 2 albums,
which were compilations, see the International
Album Releases (Other Dylan Compilations) page. All Japanese Dylan releases before 1968, when Sony took over Columbia/CBS,
were in stereo. All these Japanese CBS
releases are very collectable and come with unique inserts and booklets. For Bob
Dylan Vol. 4, Vol. 5 and Vol. 6, which were also rebadged regular
albums, see their respective pages (Vol. 4 was The Times They Are
A-Changin', Vol. 5 and Vol. 6 were the two halves of Blonde
On Blonde).
CBS YS-611-C (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Hans Seegers |
This release with an exclusive anachronistic
sleeve, is the regular 1962 Bob Dylan
album with the tracks reordered! To find it with its original obi is very
difficult, so the copy illustrated is extremely rare. Side 1: House Of The Risin' Sun; Freight Train Blues; Song To Woody; See That My Grave Is Kept Clean; Gospel Plow; Baby, Let Me Follow You Down Side 2: She's No Good [You're No Good]; Talkin' New York; In My Time Of Dyin'; Man Of Constant Sorrow; Fixin' To Die; Pretty Peggy-O; Highway 51 All are the regular album versions. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller (here the first track on Side 2, but normally the first track on Side 1), was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" as before. Ben Backhurst has a white label promo copy in a generic Columbia Records sleeve with just Side 1 of the album. Side 2 of this record is from an album by an artist called Caravelli called Que Je T'Aime. For more details of the Taiwanese release of this album, see Questionable Releases. |

CBS 62022 (Italy) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1966 stereo release) |
For the Italian mono releases of this album, see
Mono Album
Releases. The only difference from the Italian mono album on the 1966 stereo front sleeve is that it omits the catalogue number and the mono indication in the top left hand corner (detail shown). The 1966 stereo rear sleeve is different from the mono sleeve, with a gold foil "Stereo" sticker and a stereo information text box at the bottom. The 1966 orange CBS stereo record labels are identical to one variant of the first release mono labels - the matrix number under the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole (62022-1L) is upside down. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller is correctly titled on the Side 1 label. |

"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 62022 (NL), 1967; CBS S 62022 (NL), 1969; CBS S 62022 (Spain for NL), 1973; CBS S 62022 (NL), 1975; CBS 32001 (NL), 1982, re-released mid-1980s, late 1980s; Columbia COL 32001 (NL), 1990s:
CBS S 62022 (NL), 1967:
Lars M. Banke has a copy bought from a Spanish record dealer. The sleeve is similar to the pressing made for the French market listed below and has three folded-over flaps on the rear. “STEREO Can Also Be Played In Mono” is missing from above the CBS logo in the upper left corner of the front sleeve. The record is the first Dutch release as shown with "STEREO" and "(P) 1967" to the left of the centre hole, missing from the French release.
CBS S 62022 (NL), 1969:
The rear sleeve was also different, without the "STEREO"/arrows logo. There were at least four different variants of the rear sleeve:
I understand these last three were Dutch price codes.
CBS S 62022 (Spain for NL), 1973:
CBS S 62022 (NL), 1975:
CBS 32001 (NL), 1982, re-released mid-1980s:
The 1982 release has a new catalogue number CBS 32001, and the same front sleeve with the logo removed as that of the late 1980s release shown. The 1982 rear sleeve has "CB|211" in a lozenge and "53" in a circle at top right below the CBS logo. It also has the same CBS "Nice Price" inner sleeve as the 1982 CBS re-release of Planet Waves. The 1982 record has orange/yellow CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-62022-1A1, Side 2 - CBS 01-62022-1B-1. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was correctly titled on the Side 1 record label.
Lars M. Banke's variant 2 copy must date from the mid-1980s and has a front "Nice Price" sticker. The rear sleeve now has "CB|231" in a lozenge and "53" in a circle at top right below the CBS logo, the same as the late 1980s copy below. The record labels now have no star above the side number to the right of the centre hole. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01 - 62022 A1, Side 2 -CBS 01 - 62022 B1, again the same as the late 1980s copy below.
CBS 32001 (NL), late 1980s:
Columbia COL 32001 (NL), 1990s:
The fifth release from the 1990s had a new catalogue number, Columbia COL 32001, and the record had red Columbia labels with the copy shown having stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01 62022-1A-1, Side 2 - CBS 01-62033-1B-1. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was correctly titled on the Side 1 record label. The front sleeve had no logo and the logo on the rear sleeve at top right was replaced by a barcode.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Patrick Helfrich, Gerd Rundel, Simon Blokker, Lars M. Banke, Peter Oudejans and Ger Hemel for information and scans.
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 62022 (NL for France), 1967:
Lars M. Banke has a record in this sleeve with the folded-over flaps where the labels are the same as those of the first Dutch release above.

"Bob Dylan" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40-32001 (NL), 1982
(two releases);
Columbia 40-32001 (NL), 1990s (two releases):
Were there no Dutch cassette releases with the previous 62022 catalogue
number?
CBS 40-32001 (NL), 1982:
This stereo cassette release in the "Nice Price" series with the new catalogue number is actually from 1982, but is dated 1967 on the cassette (the date the album was first released in Holland) and 1978 on the rear of the cassette insert. The cassette is light grey with black text. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the insert and Side 1. Pierre van der Pol's copy must be earlier. It has the same insert but does not have the red "Nice Price from CBS" print, nor the red "Prix D’Ami" at the bottom. The release being part of the "Nice Price" programme is just mentioned on the back of the insert in English, French and German in small print. Also, the outside of the insert does not have the coloured anti-piracy print, nor the barcode. You're No Good is incorrectly titled as "She’s No Good" on both on the insert and on Side 1 of the cassette. The cassette is again light grey with black text and no paper labels, but the layout is completely different; it is also dated "1962 CBS Inc." on the cassette (instead of 1967), but dated 1967 on the rear of the insert.
Columbia 40-32001 (NL), 1990s (two releases):
Thanks to Tom Willems, Thor-Kenneth Brandth, Manuel García Jara, Paul Shenton and Pierre van der Pol for information and pictures.
"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, CBS S 62022 (NL/Greece), 1967(?); CBS S 62022 (Greece), mid-1970s (two variants), CBS 32001 (Greece), 1980s:
CBS S 62022 (NL/Greece), 1967; CBS S 62022 (Greece), mid-1970s (two variants):
CBS S 62022 (Greece) - detail of rear, scan by Arie de Reus (1967 and
mid-1970s releases - centre text on three lines, printer code "MT 4957" on right)
Lars M. Banke's copy in the Greek sleeve with the Dutch labels has the same matrix numbers as the 1967 Dutch copy above, both have stamped UK matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62022 A, Side 2 - SBPG 62022 B.
The 1960s/mid-1970s Greek releases had a printer code "MT 49xx" on the rear sleeve at bottom right. In this series of releases Bob Dylan was "MT 4957".
You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the Side 1 record label. Like the UK and Dutch releases, Fixin' To Die and Highway 51 are listed as "Fixin' To Die Blues" and "Highway 61 Blues".
The album was re-released in the mid-1970s with an identical sleeve, but with a record that was made in Greece with orange/yellow CBS labels. The mid-1970s Side 1 label has the same three mistakes as the 1967 Side 1 label. Both records shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62022A, Side 1 - SBPG 62022B (UK matrix numbers). Simon Blokker has an alternate mid-1970s copy in the same sleeve as Arie's copy with very different labels as shown in the detail scans.
CBS S 32001 (Greece), mid-1980s:
CBS S 32001 (Greece) - detail of rear, scan by Lars M. Banke (mid-1980s
release - top line of centre text missing, "MT 4957" still on right)
The album was re-released in the mid-1980s with a sleeve and record that were made in Greece with the new "Nice Price" catalogue number and red CBS labels. The sleeve is slightly different at the bottom and now has catalogue number "S 62022". The copy shown has had the "Nice Price" label removed from the front at bottom right and has resultant damage. The mid-1980s Side 1 label has the same three mistakes as the 1967 and mid-1970s Side 1 labels. The copy of the record shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62022 A, Side 1 - SBPG 62022 B (again UK matrix numbers).

CBS/Sony SONP 50210 (Japan), May 1970:
After the 1966 release above, these three releases are the regular 1962 Bob Dylan album! The three front sleeves are identical apart from the catalogue numbers. Even more of the tops of Bob's cap and guitar are missing! The first release SONP 50210 has a rear sleeve in Japanese.
You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on the front and rear sleeves and Side 1 record labels of all releases. All releases have orange/cream CBS/Sony labels except the promo releases of SONP 50210, which has yellow CBS/Sony promo labels (which means that it dates from early 1970 at the latest) and SOPL 220, which has black/white CBS/Sony promo labels (which were introduced in early 1970).

CBS/Sony 25AP 268 (Japan), 1976, mid 1977, late 1977:
The third release (CBS/Sony 25AP 268) has a more common side obi. 25AP 268 was released in 1976 with a red white and black obi including a token for the limited edition rarities EP Mr. D's Collection #2 (see 1976), in early 1977 with a light-brown, black and white side obi of a different design, and again in late 1977 with a wider light-brown obi giving 1978 Japanese tour dates. All obis have price ¥2,500 (the "25" in the catalogue number indicates the price). The three releases all have an 8-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese.

"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LPs, CBS S 62022 (Spain), 1972 (four times); CBS S 62022 (Spain), 1974; CBS 32001 (Spain), 1985; CBS/Sony 32001 (Spain), 1990s (twice):
CBS S 62022 (Spain), 1972 release made by COFASA (two variants):
Although it was not released in Spain until 1972, contrary to previous reports this album was not banned by the Franco regime in the 1960s. There is a rear sleeve unique to Spain with liner notes translated into Spanish by top music journalist Diego A. Manrique. There was also an inner sleeve with lyrics in English.
The records for these first 1972 releases were made in Spain by COFASA, and have orange CBS labels with the album sub-title "A BRIGHT NEW NAME IN FOLK MUSIC". The labels have the logo of the Spanish copyright organisation "SGAE". The song titles are in English and You're No Good is incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on Side 1. The labels of these original pressings have correct titles - all the subsequent Spanish editions of this album have two mistakes: track #5 of Side 1 (Fixin' To Die) is always unnumbered and track 6 of Side 2 is mistitled as "See That My Grave Is Kept Clan" instead of "...Kept Clean".
There are two record label variants, both with COFASA in the circumference text. The variant 1 record labels have one song title per line below the centre hole, as was usual for records made by COFASA. The variant 1 copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-1A, Side 2 - XSM 55622-1A.
The 1972 variant 2 record labels are different in a number of ways from the variant 1 labels:
There is now a wide space between “BOB DYLAN” and “A BRIGHT NEW NAME IN FOLK MUSIC” above the centre hole
The text layout to the right of the centre hole is different: “XSM 55621 1 K” is immediately below the catalogue number and the 1972 date is below “SGAE” instead of above it
The song titles below the centre hole are listed continuously, not one song per line.
The variant 2 copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-1 K , Side 2 - XSM 55622-1AD. Inexplicably this record came in the sleeve listed below dated 1974 on the rear - this cannot be original.
CBS S 62022 (Spain), 1972 releases made by CBS:
The second CBS release of this album in 1972 uses the same sleeve and inner sleeve as the first release. The difference is on the labels to the right of the centre hole: the copyright text "(P) 1972 CBS, Inc" is now below "SGAE" instead of above. The second CBS copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 55621-1L 15, Side 2 - XSM 55622-1AD.

The 1985 release has the new "32001" catalogue number and a shorter insert. It again has the subtitle "A BRIGHT NEW NAME IN FOLK MUSIC" on the outside and inside of the insert and also on the cassette. You're No Good is mistitled "She's No Good" on both sides of the insert. The cassette has the new CBS logo and is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. You're No Good is again mistitled "She's No Good" on Side 1. All the apostrophes in the song titles are now present and correct!

Unlike the Spanish release, this album was prohibited during the dictatorships of Dr. Antonio Salazar followed by Marcelo Caetano, which ended in 1974. It was manufactured and distributed in Portugal by Radio Triunfo, LDA. The front sleeve is identical to the Dutch 1975 release above with "STEREO", logo and catalogue number in one black rectangle in upper left. The rear sleeve has the spine text printed along the right border as shown. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with Portuguese text round the circumference. You're No Good by Jesse Fuller was incorrectly titled as "She's No Good" on Side 1. Like the UK releases, Fixin' To Die and Highway 51 are listed as "Fixin' To Die Blues" and "Highway 61 Blues" on the Side 1 labels.

Comes In. Unusually it uses the original artwork and liner notes, presumably
because the copyright has lapsed and is listed here for information. More unauthorised releases of this album, not using the original artwork, are now here. |
