Original US stereo LP, Columbia CS 8905, 10 Feb 1964, CD released Jan 1989. 10 Feb 1964 is the release date given by bobdylan.com, Brian Hinton's 2006 book "Bob Dylan Album File & Complete Discography" (Cassell Illustrated), dates it as 13 Jan 1964. A mono radio station copy has a date of "12-22" (22 Dec 1963), which supports the January date, see Mono Album Releases. |

The front photograph was taken by Barry Feinstein, not
credited on every international release. It's a pastiche of a Woody Guthrie
photo. Barry Feinstein sadly died on 20 Oct 2011, for more pictures of Bob by

The picture on the right is a composite of UK CBS and US Columbia album front sleeves - the UK album picture starts at the top of the picture with the CBS logo and ends just below the top visible unbuttoned button on Bob's shirt; the US mono album picture starts just above the text, cutting off more of the top of Bob's head and ends as shown showing the buttoned button. (The Columbia logo is below the "N" of "DYLAN", not above the text - see Mono Album Releases.)

take 1 from 23 Oct 1963 on the 50th Anniversary Collection 1963
(2013) confirms Heylin and Barker to be correct!

The mono and stereo rear sleeves of CS 8905/CL 2105 were different on the initial release, but subsequent US album releases from 1965 onwards used the same sleeve for both mono and stereo versions as long as mono continued. Augie Krater has a stereo copy in the mono sleeve with a stereo sticker at bottom left. The US stereo rear sleeve has the poems by Bob, "11 Outlined Epitaphs", subsequently published in his "Writings And Drawings" book and "Lyrics 1962-1985". The rear sleeve shows the first three and a half poems, which are continued on an insert. |

Henry V. Bell has two copies of CS 8905: the first has red Columbia labels wih the "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos in black and matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1G, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1G. The second has the "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos in white and matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1E, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1E. Gerd Rundel has a copy of the 1964 release with a red demo stamp on the rear sleeve. The record has red Columbia labels with the "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos in black (same as the scans by Henry V. Bell) and matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1D, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1C. All the labels with black "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos have "NONBREAKABLE" to the left of the centre hole.
Lance Jacobs has a first release copy with the original insert where the record has red Columbia labels with the "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos in black and matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1G, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1G (same as Henry's first copy). The sleeve has "1" at rear bottom right (this indicates it was made by Modern Album Finishing Co., probably at Terre Haute, IN).

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information that the label design with white arrows was introduced in Jul/Aug 1965 (Bringing It All Back Home had labels with black arrows on original release in Mar 1965, and Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds still had labels with black arrows on original release in Jun 1965). Gerd Rundel also has a copy that belonged to rock critic Greil Marcus, author of "Invisible Republic: Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes", with the mono/stereo rear sleeve and mixed record labels - Side 1 has the 1964 label with the black "STEREO"/arrow logo while Side 2 has the 1965 label with the white "STEREO"/arrow logo. This copy is dated "1964" on the rear sleeve, which has a "6" at bottom right (this indicates it was made by Imperial Packing Co., Inc. of Indianapolis, IN). The record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1E, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1E. This implies the second release could actually date from late 1964 rather than 1965. Gerd has another copy with the same "1E" matrix numbers with second release labels with white "STEREO"/arrow logos, "NONBREAKABLE" and without "MASTERWORKS" (as Henry V. Bell's 1965 copy shown). This copy comes in a first release sleeve with only the stereo catalogue number on the rear sleeve at top right. There is an "8" on the rear sleeve at bottom right - this again indicates the sleeve was fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co., probably at Terre Haute, IN.
Simon Blokker has a reissue copy from around 1965 where the sleeve is of composite construction and is not laminated. The rear sleeve has the mono catalogue number on the back and a "6" printed at bottom right - this indicates it is a reissue sleeve fabricated by Imperial Paper Box Corp. of Brooklyn, NY (original sleeves fabricated by them would have a "2"). The record labels have "NONBREAKABLE" to the left of the centre hole and "COLUMBIA MASTERWORKS" in the bottom text. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 75528-1E (stamped), plus a faint "sm III" (handwritten), Side 2 - XSM 75529-1E (stamped), plus a faint "sm II" (handwritten).
Hans Seegers knows of a copy of this album that is mispressed. Even though the labels are correct, it plays Side 2 on both sides! This copy has stamped matrix number XSM-75529-1K on both sides.

Hans Seegers has a copy released in 1967 of the version with the white "STEREO/360º SOUND" logos without "NONBREAKABLE" to the left of the centre hole. That has later matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1AB (stamped), Side 2 - XSM-75529-1AC (written). See The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan for more information about these 1960s US record label differences. Sergio Mariano Romay has two copies where the records have
the 1967 labels as shown for Hans Seegers' copy above but come in 1969 inner sleeves.
The front sleeves are the same but the rear sleeves are completely different -
on the first copy the stereo information at the top is missing and there are
both stereo and mono catalogue numbers under the Columbia logo at top right.
This copy has an "A" at bottom right showing it's a reissue sleeve made at
the Columbia plant, Terre Haute, IN. On the second rear sleeve the top
stereo information is present, and there is only the stereo catalogue number
under the Columbia logo at top right. This copy has an "S" at bottom
right showing it's a reissue sleeve made at the Columbia plant, Santa Maria,
CA. The first copy has an inner sleeve showing Nashville Skyline on the second row of album illustrations on the front and "HHC 2" on the rear. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 – XSM 75228-1AC (stamped), Side 2 – XSM 75229-1AC (handwritten) plus "T" (stamped). The first copy has an inner sleeve showing Nashville Skyline on the third row of album illustrations on the front and "HHC 4" on the rear. The rear sleeve of this copy is in the 1965/67 style as above and has a "1" printed at bottom right - this indicates it is a reissue sleeve fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co. of Terre Haute, IN, and several other locations. The grey/white CBS stickers are larger than the stickers on Colin Baker's copy. The Columbia logos are covered but not the word "Columbia" on the rear sleeve. The poems insert is included. The record labels have the 1964 black "STEREO"/arrows logo. The sticker on Side 1 was removed by a former owner, but Side 2 still has a shaped red sticker with a "CBS" logo. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers. Side 1 - XSM-75528-1G, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1G.

Colin Baker has a UK-bought copy of the 1965 release with the white "STEREO"/arrows logo and "NONBREAKABLE" on the record labels. This copy has black/white "CBS" stickers covering the Columbia logos and the word "Columbia" in the text of the sleeve and a shaped sticker with three "CBS" logos covering "Columbia" on the record labels. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1K, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1G.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a copy on eBay with white ring stickers with "C.B.S." round the outside of the labels. This was sold in Switzerland.

This variant dates from 1969/70 and comes in a sleeve with a light yellow tinge to the front. The rear sleeve has "1" printed at bottom right - this indicates it is a reissue sleeve originally fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co. of Terre Haute, IN, and several other locations. It comes with the poem insert. The record labels still have the design with the white "STEREO"/arrows logo. "CS 8905" to the left of the centre hole is now in italics, and below it is now printed “STEREO”. "SIDE 1/2" to the right of the centre hole is in capitals. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1L, Side 2 - XSM 75529-1AD. |

The album was reissued in the early 1970s with a record with red labels with yellow Columbia logos in a circle round the edge. Mark Steil's copy still has "CS 8905" on the sleeve and labels, but has the new style record labels. The catalogue number is still "CS 8905". Gerd Rundel has a similar copy to Mark's where the matrix numbers are: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1AC (stamped), Side 2 - XSM-75529-1AC (handwritten). This copy comes in a generic Columbia US inner sleeve called "The Inner Sleeve" dated 1971 with details of contemporary Columbia US releases. I suspect this record came from a different Columbia US plant because of the different type face on the record labels and other differences from the labels of the albums shown immediately before and after. The record labels no longer have italic text left and right of the centre hole and the "STEREO" below the catalogue number to the left of the centre hole is missing. "Side 1/2" is in upper/lower case.
Columbia KCS 8905 (USA), mid 1970s:

The US stereo album was reissued in the mid 1970s as Columbia KCS 8905, again with red labels with yellow Columbia logos in a circle round the edge. The "STEREO" below the catalogue number to the left of the centre hole has returned! "SIDE 1/2" to the right of the centre hole is now back in capitals. This stereo album was again released as Columbia PC 8905 in
1975 with the KCS 8905 sleeve and again with red labels with yellow
Columbia logos in a circle round the edge.
The sleeve of Gerd
Rundel's 1975 copy has "PC 8905" on the spine and only “8905” on the front, but the rear sleeve has no barcode.
The
"STEREO" below the catalogue number to the left of the centre hole
is still printed, and
"SIDE 1/2" to the right of the centre hole is again
in capitals.
The record
of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1AH, Side 2 - XSM 75529-2B.
Sergio Mariano Romay
has two copies of this
reissue. One of them, still sealed, has a front sticker with “THE NICE
PRICE”. The record of the other has these matrix numbers: Side 1 - |

This 1970s US copy of Columbia PC 8905 has the "Columbia" logos blackened out on the front and rear of the sleeve with hand-drawn black squares. Two instances of "Columbia" have also been blacked out with marker pen at the bottom of the rear sleeve. The ring of "Columbia" logos on the record labels has been blacked out with what looks like a black circular sticker, but is also "handmade". The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 75528 1AH, Side 2 - XSM 75529 2B.

The sleeve of the 1980s release has "JC 8905" on the spine but only “8905” on the front and rear. The rear sleeve has no barcode as on the later release below. The record labels look the same as the ones above but also have "JC 8905" instead of "PC 8905". The "STEREO" below the catalogue number to the left of the centre hole is still printed, and "SIDE 1/2" to the right of the centre hole is again in capitals. The copy of the record shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1AD, Side 2 - XSM 75529-1AH. |

This 1983 release was produced under licence from Columbia. The
sleeve has a black strip front and back with "ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING" in
white. The record was pressed in Japan and has white MFSL labels with
written matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL-1-114-A-3 J. LEMAY/2 H 3 5 1, Side 2 - MFSL-1-114-B-3 J. LEMAY/2 H 3

means the album was mastered by engineer John Lemay, whose name appears on
many audiophile vinyl releases of the time.) This album has been half speed mastered. Les Kokay says it runs about 1% faster than the regular stereo release but surprising the sound is not as sharp, especially the vocals. |

PC 8905 was reissued in 1992 with plain red labels and Columbia in white, the copy shown has written matrix numbers: Side 1 - <P.AP> XSM-75528-G1D, Side 2 - <P.AP> XSM-75529-G2D. The front and rear sleeves have only "8905" as the catalogue number and the rear sleeve has a barcode. This release was again reissued in 2001 on 180gm vinyl with the same matrix numbers. Thanks to Hans Seegers and Tinti & Hermoso for information, photos and scans. Thanks to Paul Prince for notifying me of the "gold plated" copy of the 2001 Columbia PC 8905 180gm vinyl release sold on eBay. The record is gold plated on Side 1 only. Unfortunately Columbia US have not released any copies like this. The sleeve looks genuine, but I'm told it is of inferior quality to the real thing, and was probably printed using a colour laser printer. |

Gerd Rundel's test pressing was made by RTI (Record Technology Inc.) for Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Each record comes in a plain white cut-out sleeve, but only the Record 1 sleeve has the stamped mastering date and catalogue number at front top right. Sides 1 and 3 have generic RTI labels dated 24 June 2013, while Sides 2 and 4 have plain white labels. The test pressing records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 2-421 A1 plus 22175.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 2-421 B1 plus 22175.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 3 - MFSL 2-421 C1 plus 22175.3 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 4 - MFSL 2-421 D1 plus 22175.4 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite. In the matrix numbers, “KW @ MoFi” means that the records were mastered by Krieg Wunderlich of Mobile Fidelity.

| This is a very rare item! 4-track was a short-lived continuous tape format, quickly superseded by 8-track. It has only two "programs" per tape instead of four as in 8-track (see below). The cartridge is in green plastic, contained inside a black slipcase. |

It was released twice, first with two separate rear and end labels, then with a wrap-around end/rear label. |
The Columbia House release (sealed, not shown) had a blue slipcase and a black cartridge. The mid-1970s Columbia release had a black cartridge (also not shown) and used the same black slipcase as the 1968 release. Rearranging the track order to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length defeated the tape compiler, so two tracks are split over two programs, even though the songs are reordered:
Program 1: The Times They Are A-Changin'; Ballad Of Hollis Brown; North Country Blues (Part 1).
Program 2: North Country Blues (Conclusion); With God On Our Side; One Too Many Mornings.
Program 3: Boots Of Spanish Leather; When The Ship Comes In; The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (Part 1).
Program 4: The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (Conclusion); Only A Pawn In Their Game; Restless Farewell.
André Wilbers says the split tracks are not seamless, the first part fades out and the second part fades in. These tracks are therefore designated as rarities, so this release is also listed in 1968.

These cassette releases have a single insert that is blank on the reverse. The 1970s cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The 1980s release has the same catalogue number and the same sized insert, now with a barcode. The 1980s cassette is now transparent smoked grey with white text, although the text layout looks identical to that of the previous release. Both cassettes have Dolby noise reduction. |

The 1967 release sleeve has "Litho in Canada" on the spine. The front top left has an overprinted white stripe to hide the mono catalogue number (the rear lists only the stereo catalogue number). The rear sleeve is the same as that of the 1964 release. It comes with the continuation of the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" insert. The record labels now have white "360 Sound/STEREO logos with arrows and "NONBREAKABLE" left to the centre hole. The record of this copy again has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1K, Side 2 - XSM-75529-1H.

The 1970s sleeve was printed by Shorepak, Canada. There are two variants with different Columbia logos at rear top right. I think the first is before 1976, and the second is after 1976. The insert with the continuation of the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" is on a thin card of approximately A4 size instead of a 12" x 12" paper sheet as in the US version.
The record of the 1970s album shown has red Columbia labels with yellow Columbia logos in a circle round the edge, as in the US version of KCS 8905 above. Differences in the front and rear sleeves from the US version are shown. The bottom text on the record labels now has "MANUFACTURED BY CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD.". Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976, so this release is after then. Scans of the Columbia Records of Canada labels required!

This Canadian release comes from the late 1980s or early 1990s. It comes in a US sleeve with "PC 8905" on the spine and a barcode on the rear. The record labels have catalogue number "XPC 8905" to the left of the centre hole. This copy was bought in Sweden. Every occurrence of "Columbia" on the front and rear sleeve has been blacked out with marker pen, and the record labels have white ring-shaped stickers hiding the ring of Columbia logos. Lars has a fourth Canadian export copy that differs from the third copy because this one does not have black circular stickers on the Columbia logos on the front and the rear sleeve. Instead the logos and "Columbia" in the text at the bottom of the rear sleeve have been erased with black ink. The record labels again have black ring-shaped stickers. The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 75528 1 A 2HK, Side 2 - XSM 75529 1A 2K. Note there is no “XSM” on Side 1.

This 1970s Canadian KCS 8905 copy was probably bought in Sweden. It has "Columbia" whitened out in the logos on front and rear sleeve but nowhere else. There are no stickers on the record labels, which have "CBS Records Canada Ltd." at the bottom so date from after 1976. The record of this copy has very hard to read handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 75528 1 A, Side 2 - XSM 75529 1 A 2K.

The UK rear sleeve not only has no track times, but also short-changes the UK record-buying public by showing only "4 Outlined Epitaphs"! The rear sleeve showed poems 1, 2, 7 and 8, and there was no insert as with the US release. UK fans had to wait until the publication of the book "Writings And Drawings" in 1974 to get the full eleven!

Mick Robinson has a copy of the first release which he believes was manufactured by Philips on behalf of CBS. It has a laminated paste-over sleeve with the black Stereo/arrows logo on the front only. The catalogue number on the record labels is "SBPG 62251". The Side 1 record label has "33" to the left of the centre hole and "SBPG-62251 1Y" plus "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1964" to the right of the centre hole, whereas the Side 2 label has "SBPG-62251 2Y" ("Y" was the Philips code for stereo.) The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62251 1Y// 1:420, Side 2 - SBPG 62251 2Y// 1:420. Gerd Rundel has a copy with identical record matrix numbers. Gerd Rundel also has a copy with mixed record labels. It comes in a mono sleeve with a red stereo stamp on top of the rear sleeve, printed by Dawson Rossiter Ltd. Also the labels have different typeface and layout, the catalogue number is now "Sbpg 62251" and Side 1 has “33⅓” playing speed and "SBPG-62251.1Y" plus "(P) 1964" while Side 2 has “33”, "SPBG 62251 B" and "(P) 1964" also. In contrast my copy has Philips labels on both sides, again with catalogue number "Sbpg 62251". The Side 1 label is almost the same as Gerd's, except that "33⅓" is in a different type face. The catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is "SBPG-62251.1Y" plus "(P) 1964" instead of "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1964". The Side 2 label has "33⅓" in the same type face as Side 1. The catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is "SBPG-62251.2Y", again plus "(P) 1964". The record of my copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62251 A4, Side 2 - SBPG 62251 B5. (These are again CBS matrix numbers!)
1964 copies made by CBS (first release):
The first release of this stereo version of this album in 1964 used the UK mono sleeve with just a gold foil "Stereo" sticker on the back (some copies also have the UK mono sleeve without this sticker). The sleeve has three folded-over flaps and the text "Record Sleeve Printed and Made by Dawson Rossiter Ltd." at the bottom of the rear sleeve. The record had orange CBS labels with "33" on the left of the centre hole and matrix numbers: Side 1 - SBPG 62251 A +1, Side 2 - SBPG 62251 B2. To the right of the centre hole is "SBPG 62551 A/B" and "(P) 1964". Mick Robinson has a copy printed by Dawson Rossiter with red stereo arrows on the back, but not on the front, which is in fact a later variant of the first sleeve. The record of this copy has matt orange labels with "33" on Side 2 (first release) and "33⅓" on Side 1 (second release). It appears this was produced when CBS were changing over from the first release to the second release!
Peter Oudejans has a copy with these CBS labels with playing speed "33" on both sides. The record has US matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1L, Side 2 - XSM-75528-1G.

Lars M. Banke has a copy which is a mixture of the various editions already on the website. It looks mostly like a first CBS pressing, however there is no red stereo stamp on the rear sleeve, but a white/black stereo sticker. The catalogue number "62251" is below the CBS logo in the upper right corner of the rear sleeve. It again has mixed labels (the opposite of Mick Robinson's copy) with "SPBG 62251 A" on Side 1 (CBS), but "SPBG 62251.2Y" on Side 2 (Philips). The playing speed is “33” on side 1, but “33⅓” on Side 2, so Side 1 is the same as Hans Seegers' copy immediately above and Side 2 is the same as my first release variant 2 Philips copy above as the labels have "(P) 1964" on both sides. The record matrix numbers are: Side 1 - SBPG 62251 A4, Side 2 - SBPG 62251 B4 (CBS matrix numbers). |

Jordi Badell has a copy of CBS SBPG 62251 with stereo/arrows logo on sleeve and rear as per the second release below. The rear sleeve has three folded-over flaps, and "SBPG 62251" and "CS 8905" to the left of CBS logo at the top right, the bottom left has the text "CBS is a trademark........." and bottom right "Warning: copyright subsists in all CBS recordings......." but there is no text "Dawson Rossiter Ltd" as above. The record has orange CBS labels with "33" to the left of the centre hole. On the right of the centre hole is "SBPG 62251 (CS 8905)" in two lines, below that "Blossom Music Ltd" in two lines and below that "SBPG 62251 A" "P 1964" also in two lines. The record is as the first release except for the upper SBPG, without a big "S" (all four letters in smaller size) and the matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM 75528-1L, Side 2 - XSM 75529-1G both stamped. All other UK stereo editions have "62251" in the matrix number, this record uses the US matrix numbers.

The next release of CBS SBPG 62251 is from 1975, and the record has orange/yellow CBS 1970s-style labels. As with the third 1960s release, the front sleeve has no "STEREO"/arrows logo. The rear sleeve again has no folded-over flaps and catalogue number of just "62251" but the printer's name is now absent. Two record label variants are shown, the first was bought in Jun 1975. The second 1975 labels appear to have much blacker text, although this just may be a printing issue. There are differences in the text layout to the left and right of the centre hole, and the song title listing is also different. |

Between this release and the 1984 release with red record labels listed below, there are two later releases of CBS 32021 (no "S"), still with orange/yellow CBS record labels, where "MADE IN ENGLAND" has been moved to the circumference text. These releases comes in the same sleeve as listed for all 1980s releases. The first of these (described as the second 1982 release) has no text at the bottom of the labels. This very rare cartridge is the first 8-track tape ever released in the UK. It was bought there in 1968 and it is still sealed. It has a generic CBS UK slipcase with "Made in England" on the rear. The cut-outs on the front and rear of the slipcase don't match exactly the artwork of the tape; it is because this tape was made in the USA for export to the UK and the design of US and UK cartridges were different. |

Apart from colour, the tape itself is the same as that of the US release above with "Made in USA" on the rear, embossed on the light brown cartridge. There is also a sticker on the rear cartridge label with "CBS Stereo" and the CBS logo covering the original "Columbia TC8" of this US tape. The tracks are reordered (with two split across programs) as the US release:
Program 1: The Times They Are A-Changin'; Ballad Of Hollis Brown; North Country Blues (Part 1).
Program 2: North Country Blues (Conclusion); With God On Our Side; One Too Many Mornings.
Program 3: Boots Of Spanish Leather; When The Ship Comes In; The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (Part 1).
Program 4: The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (Conclusion); Only A Pawn In Their Game; Restless Farewell.
The split tracks are not seamless, the first part fades out and the second part fades in. These tracks are therefore designated as rarities, so this release is also listed in 1968.

The later UK CBS release now has a tape cartridge made in England. Beth Miller has found a copy on eBay which she believes is earlier than Hans Seegers' copy. Neither copy shown has a slipcase, but one for variant 2 is illustrated on Discogs.com. The tracks are reordered (with two split across programs) as the US release and the 1968 release above, so this release is also listed in 1968. Beth has noticed that track 1 on the rear of variant 1 is titled "The Times They Are A-Changing", on variant 2 this has been corrected. |

The second release of CBS 40-62251 can be dated to after 1977 because Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL), the UK music licensing company and performance rights organisation, moved from Oxford Street in London to Ganton Street in 1977, and the inside of the cassette insert now has the Ganton Street address with a new style postcode. This late 1970s cassette release has a shorter card insert which does not now include the poem "Epitaph". The cassette is light grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The late 1970s release track order is unusual in that Side 1 of the cassette is Side 2 of the LP, and Side 2 of the cassette is Side 1 of the LP. The cassette now has Dolby noise reduction.

The 1982 cassette release uses the catalogue number of "32021" that was introduced in 1982 for LPs. It has the late 1970s shorter card insert. The address of Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL) on the first copy insert is again Ganton Street with the new postcode. The first copy shown does not have an "LC|0149" capsule on the outside of the insert. The second copy insert now has an "LC|0149" capsule on the outside but inside the PPL address has inexplicably returned to the Oxford Street address with the old style postcode! This must be a mistake. The cassettes are again light grey with black text printed directly on to them, there are no paper labels. The 1982 release track order is the same as the late 1970s release of CBS 40-62251, with Sides 1 and 2 reversed. The variant 2 cassette has bolder text than the variant 1 cassette. |

Manuel's later release has the same cassette but the outside of the insert now has anti-counterfeit printing on the left. The inside of the insert is for some reason missing the credit to Blossom Music Ltd. and "(P) 1964 CBS Inc.". The PPL address is still that of Oxford Street, which must be a mistake.

The very collectable first 1960s release comes with a double-sided insert with the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" Dylan poems and the record has orange CBS labels. The first and second 1960s releases have the Australian distributor Allan's logo on the labels, on the third it is missing. (Allan's were music publishers in Australia for Bob Dylan records between 1965 and 1969, so this release is after then.) The record of the first release shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX 143305 C, Side 2 - MX 143305 C. Lars M. Banke has a second 1960s release copy also with the insert shown. The record labels still have the Allan's logo but the text element are in different type faces from those of Stuart's Allan's copy. All the record labels above have round the circumference at the bottom the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text as on the late 1970s labels below includes the CBS copyright information. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

These budget cassettes with Dolby noise reduction were released in Australia by the Rainbow Music Group, Sydney, licensed by CBS. The first release cassette is of white plastic with blue text, there are no paper labels. The second release cassette is now on chrome tape and has a different insert, still pink. The cassette is of black plastic with silver text, there are again no paper labels.
The third release shown has a new catalogue number and the insert now is dark orange in colour and has a barcode, not present on the first two inserts. The cassette is again white with blue text.

These releases again have the same imported US sleeve and insert, but on the copies 1 and 3 the Columbia logos have not been covered with stickers. The labels of all three copies have the three "CBS" logos as the Malaysian copy above. All three variants have the white stereo logo without the arrows. The first variant has the word "Nonbreakable" to the left of the centre hole and the song titles are left aligned. The second variant still has the word "Nonbreakable" to the left of the centre hole but the song titles are centred and printed much lower. The third variant does not have the word "Nonbreakable" to the left of the centre hole and the song titles are again centred.
The record of the first copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528 C-608, Side 2 - XSM-75529 C-609. The record of the third copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528, Side 2 - XSM-75529, the same as the Malaysia copy above.

CBS had a record pressing facility in Singapore from 1967, so records after that were sourced locally. The rear sleeves of all four copies shown have a "1" printed at bottom right - this indicates they are reissue sleeves fabricated by Modern Album Finishing Co. of Terre Haute, IN, and several other locations.

All Japanese Dylan releases before 1968, when Sony took over Columbia/CBS, were in stereo. All these Japanese CBS releases are very collectable and come with unique sleeve photos, inserts and booklets.

The 1967 album has five sleeve variants, all with the same insert and record. The record has orange CBS labels with handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ST-62251 A, Side 2 - ST-62251 B. The insert continues the "11 Outlined Epitaphs".
The first 1967 variant uses what looks like a mono sleeve with yellow stickers with the CBS
"STEREO"/arrows logo on the front and back. The sleeve has folded-over flaps on
three sides and was also used for some copies of the Dutch mono record.
However, most Dutch mono copies come in a folded sleeve that was open on three sides inside a plastic
wallet (a design unique to Holland).

Lars M. Banke has a copy of the Dutch The Times They Are A-Changin' album which is a combination of the first and the second variants of the 1967 album: the sleeve is the second variant with three folded-over flaps on the rear, and has the "STEREO"/arrows logo printed on the front and rear (not a sticker), like the detail scans from Hans Seegers below. However, the record labels are the first variant with the "(P) 1967" text on the left of the centre hole on two lines and the “P” not in a circle. The record matrix numbers are again Side 1 - ST 62251 A, Side 2 - ST 62251 B. The front sleeve has a yellow and black record store sticker with price 9.90 guilders (€4.49).

The second 1967 release uses the same sleeve with three folded-over flaps, but has printed "STEREO" logos on the front and back. Three details from the second sleeve are shown.
Gerd Rundel has a copy of the album with a third sleeve variant and with a variant label with different publishing text to the left of the centre hole. The standard label has "P" with "1967" underneath it as shown, the variant label has "(P) 1967" on one line. This release has a fully laminated sleeve with no folded-over flaps. The only differences in the fourth release sleeve are that the sleeve has only two folded-over flaps and the "NL" is missing from the bottom right of the rear sleeve.
Nicolas Louvet has a fifth 1960s variant sleeve with printed "STEREO" logos on the front and back, no folded-over flaps, a "B" in the top right hand corner of the rear sleeve, and "NL PRINTED IN HOLLAND" at bottom right. The record has the second 1960s labels variant as Gerd Rundel's copy above.

Manuel García Jara has two different releases, both were bought in Paris in January of 1974 and both have an identical sleeve. The sleeve doesn't match any other on this page. It is not laminated and the rear has no folded-over flaps. The "STEREO"/arrows logo is present on the front and rear of the sleeve; "NL printed in holland" is on the rear, printed vertically (as Nicholas Louvet's copy), and there is also a "Y" in a circle at rear top left (where Nicholas Louvet's copy has a "B").
The first record was made in Spain and has "MADE IN SPAIN" on the labels. They differ from Spanish labels because the copyright text in the circumference is in English, not Spanish, and instead of the Spanish "SGAE" copyright logo, these labels have "C.C. BIEM". However, the tracklist text has been written in the same typeface as the Spanish release and even with the same distribution of tracks per lines. The most noticeable similarity to Spanish labels is that the album and track title have the typical Spanish mistake "...CHANGIN!" instead of "CHANGIN'", present on several Spanish records and tapes of the time. The matrix numbers (Side 1 - XSM 75528-1AF, Side 2 - XSM 75529-1AD) are identical to those of the first Spanish release made by CBS itself below (at the time the masters used by CBS in Spain were sent directly from the USA).
The second record was made in Holland and has the "second 1967 variant" design of labels as above. The matrix numbers are: Side 1 - S-62251-1A-1 (stamped) plus "H" in a circle (handwritten); Side 2: SBPG 62251 B4 (stamped) These matrix numbers are different from other reported records in this entry. As far as Manuel knows, this "second 1967 variant" was the standard Dutch design of labels and it was used for several reissues from 1967 to 1975 (which explains the variations of rear sleeve). Some of those sleeves shown here as "five 1967 sleeve variants" could be later variants used for the reissues and not actually from 1967. More information required!

The 1985 release was renumbered CBS 32021. On front of the Dutch sleeve the CBS and "STEREO"/arrows logos are obscured. There are two rear sleeve variants, on the first the number in the capsule at top right is "CB|211", on the second the number is now "CB|231". (Discogs.com defines these numbers as distribution codes.) The record still has orange/yellow CBS labels. The sleeve with "CB|231" on the rear was also used for the 1985 Greek release (see below). |

Although bought in Italy in 1987, I believe Sergio Mariano Romay's copy is earlier. It has a “NICE PRICE” sticker attached to the front sleeve. The rear sleeve is as shown . The orange/yellow record labels are the same as those of Hans Seegers' copy but the asterisks that are printed above the side number to the right of the centre hole are missing. From the evidence of other releases, the labels with the asterisks are later. The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-62251-2A-1 A, Side 2 - NL 01-62251-2B-1 B.

The second cassette release is from the early 1990s. The cassette is from after the 1991 name change to "Columbia" but the insert still has "CBS". There must be copies from just before the name change that have a "CBS" cassette with this text layout. The insert is noticeably simpler, missing both the anti-forgery printing on the outside left and the red "NICE PRICE" text on the inside. The cassette is again copyrighted "1967", and again has a light-grey case with text in black, there are no paper labels. Paul points out that while the song timings on the insert are correct, Side 1 is timed at "23:43" on the insert and "22:43" on the cassette, and Side 2 is timed at "22:40" on the insert and "22:53" on the cassette.
Paul Shenton also has a later 1990s cassette with a shorter insert that no longer has "CBS". The cassette is now transparent smoke grey with white test, again without paper labels. The timing oddities remain.

CBS/Sony SONP 50240 in 1970 was the second Japanese release of this album - the first, released by CBS in Jul 1966 before Sony took over the record company, was retitled Bob Dylan/Vol. 4 (see above). It was the first CBS/Sony Japanese release by Bob Dylan. The front sleeve of this release is the same as the regular US sleeve, with the exception of the CBS/Sony logo and the "SX68 SOUND" logo. The 6-page folded booklet has a unique picture. The record shown has yellow CBS/Sony promo labels (which means that it dates from early 1970 at the latest). If there was an obi, it's missing from the commercial copy shown. |

CBS/Sony SOPL 222 in 1974 was the third Japanese release - it had an 8-page booklet and a top obi. The record of the promo release had white/black CBS/Sony labels, the commercial release had orange/cream CBS/Sony labels. The album’s top obi had a voucher to send away for the 1974 limited edition CBS/Sony Japan album Mr D's Collection #1, or a Dylan photo book.

25AP 270 in 1976-77 was the fourth Japanese release - it had an 8-page
booklet and a conventional green/black side obi. The rear sleeve was identical to the

album was released three times with different obis. The

This copy is the fifth Japanese release. The sleeve is exactly the same as that of the fourth release. It has a dark red/white obi with price ¥2,500, with a little square “coupon” to cut out and collect for a gift (this copy is complete). The rear of this obi is generic, and lists the 19 Dylan albums then available in Japan (up to and including Hard Rain). It has the same booklet (8 pages, green ink) as before and has an inner plastic bag with the logo of CBS/Sony in one side only. The stamped matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - 25AP-270A1 1 A 2, Side 2 - 25AP-270B1 1 A 1. |

There is another release, not yet shown, from late 1977/early 1977 with a wider obi including the 1978 Bob Dylan Japanese tour dates (including the Feb/Mar 1978 concerts at the Budokan in Tokyo from which Bob Dylan At Budokan was taken).

The
sleeves were printed in Spain by Offset ALG, Madrid. The title of the album is correct on the record labels of the 1972
COFASA release, but incorrectly printed as "The Times They Are A-Changin!"
on the CBS release, both the album title above the centre hole and the
song title below are incorrect (Manuel points out that the apostrophe is
not used in Spanish, so was not present on most Spanish typewriters at the
time). Otherwise, the COFASA and CBS sleeves appear identical, printed
by Offset ALG of Madrid for CBS.
Lars M. Banke has a CBS copy with a minor label variant -
to the right of the centre hole "(P) 1972 CBS, Inc" is above "SGAE" in a box
instead of below as on Manuel's labels. The record of this copy has stamped matrix
numbers: Side 1 - 62251 A+, Side 2 - 62251 B+.

Sergio Mariano Romay has another 1974 Spanish release, again with a fully laminated sleeve (front and rear) and an insert with the lyrics in English. On the rear sleeve the Discos CBS address is now "Avenida Generalísimo, 25 / Madrid-16". Both the sleeve and the record are still dated 1972. To the left of the centre hole, the stereo arrows have been added under “ESTEREO” and the playing speed ("33⅓") is now level with them;
To the right of the centre hole, the text elements are the same, but arranged differently;
Below the central hole, the titles of the songs are written continuously on five lines, unlike the previous 1974 Spanish release that has them written one per line on six lines.
The record of this copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62251 A+1, Side 2 - 62251 B+2.

These two cassette releases from 1982 have minimal artwork, the inside of each cassette insert has just track titles and timings. The song titles are in English only on both the insert and the cassette labels. The title is given wrongly as "The Times They Are A-Changin!" on the rear flap of the outside insert and inside, it's correct on the front of the outside insert and Side 1 of the cassette. Both cassettes are again copyrighted "1972", but they have the later catalogue number of CBS 40-32021 (earlier European cassette releases were 40-62251). The first cassette is of white plastic with orange CBS paper labels, and is dated "1982" on the left below the Dolby noise reduction system logo. The second cassette is white with orange text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. As well as the "1982" date on the left below the Dolby noise reduction system logo, the second cassette has "(E) 1982" on the right below the side number, not present on the first cassette.

Like other New Zealand Dylan album releases, the front
sleeve has a white
border. The rear sleeve is completely different from the New Zealand mono rear
sleeve and this copy has a purple record store sticker. The rear sleeve has
no folded-over flaps. The album was
marketed in New Zealand by Phonogram, part of the Philips group (now
Universal). The
record was made in New Zealand and has orange CBS labels, which do not have
the Allan's logo, the local distributor in Australia and New Zealand in the

This album was re-released in 1981 with a light yellow sleeve and a new catalogue number as part of a series called "STAR SPECTACULAR - ORIGINAL ARTISTS". "Star Spectacular" was the equivalent to the European "Nice Price" CBS series. Three Dylan albums were released in this series: The Times They Are A-Changin', Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and Desire. The album was marketed and distributed in South Africa by the Gramophone Company (Pty.) Ltd., part of the EMI group (bought by Universal in 2012). The 1981 sleeve was again printed by Interpak. The rear sleeve is dated 1981 and uses a variant of the front sleeve design, again without any of the poems. The 1981 record has orange/yellow CBS labels. |

The 1981 "Star Spectacular" series was not exclusive to South Africa, it was also released in Zimbabwe (the former Rhodesia). The sleeve design is identical to that of the 1981 South African release, apart from the printer's details (Belmont Printers, "4-A", instead of Interpak). Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for sleeves they printed for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record companies. |

This is one of two variants of this album pressed in
Mozambique. This is possibly the second variant. It has the same catalogue
number and matrix numbers as the 1972 South African stereo album. However, this
variant does not have a laminated sleeve and the front has a noticeable
yellow colour, like the 1981 South African release above. The rear sleeve
is white has the South African design with six Dylan albums, and usual text of
Mozambican albums showing the album was produced and distributed in
Mozambique by Companhia Ultramarina de Comércio,
LDA, of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). It also has a printer's logo
for "Globo LDA.". The record has plain orange CBS labels, different from the
South African labels: a different typeface for the track listing, no stereo arrows logo
and "SIDE 1" and "SIDE 2" instead of "Side 1" and "Side 2". The record of
the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - XSM-75528-1AB, Side 2 -

Both the sleeve and record of the 1975 release were made in Greece. The mid-1970s Greek releases had a printer code "MT 49xx" on the rear sleeve at bottom right, The Times They Are A-Changin' was "MT 4959".
The 1975 record has orange/yellow CBS labels, with no matrix number on Side 1 and SBPG 62251 B4 stamped on Side 2. Lars M. Banke has a copy of the same album. His record has no matrix number on Side 1 and SBPG 62251 4 stamped on Side 2.
The sleeve of the 1985 LP was made in Holland, while the record was made in Greece. The number in the capsule at rear top right of the 1985 sleeve is "CB|231", the same as the second 1985 Dutch sleeve shown above. The 1985 record has red labels with the new white CBS logo, with matrix numbers: Side 1 - 62251 A1 (handwritten), Side 2 - SBPG 62251 B1 (stamped).

This release was the first for this album in Portugal - it was prohibited in Portugal during the dictatorships of Dr. Antonio Salazar followed by Marcelo Caetano, which ended in 1974. It has the same front sleeve with the "STEREO"/arrows logo as the 1975 Dutch release, but omits the "S" from the catalogue number. Note the vertical printing of the album details on the rear sleeve next to the spine. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels.

These records were legal in Taiwan at the time of release, but were
produced without authorisation from Columbia. They had very flimsy sleeves,
which had to be protected inside plastic to survive. There are several front
