This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

Because of the length of this page, Freewheelin' CD releases are now here.

Tape Releases: 4-track and 8-track Cartridges

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo 4-track tape cartridge release, Columbia 14 10 0190 (USA), 1967:

Columbia 14 10 0190 (USA) - top of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers
This is a very rare item! 4-track was a short-lived continuous tape format, quickly superseded by 8-track. It has only two "programs" per tape instead of four as in 8-track (see below). The cartridge is in green plastic, contained inside a black slipcase.

The running order is changed as follows, to make both programs of equal length. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and Talkin' World War III Blues are omitted!

Program 1: Blowin' In The Wind; Masters Of War; Bob Dylan's Blues; Oxford Town; Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance; I Shall be Free

Program 2: Bob Dylan's Dream; Girl From The North Country; Down The Highway; Corrina, Corrina; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. For US and UK 8-track releases, which include A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and Talkin' World War III Blues, see below.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge releases, Columbia 18 10 0190 (USA), 1968; Columbia House JCA 00190 (USA), early 1970s; Columbia PCA 190 (USA), mid-1970s; CBS 42-62193 (UK), late 1960s:

Columbia 18 10 0190 (USA) - top of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers
8-track was a continuous tape cartridge format, with four stereo "programs" per tape. For a 1967 US 4-track release, which omits A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and Talkin' World War II Blues, see above. The 1968 cartridge is in red plastic, contained inside a black slipcase. It was released twice, first with two separate rear and end labels, then with a wrap-around end/rear label. The Columbia House release (sealed) had a blue slipcase and a black cartridge. The mid-1970s Columbia release had a black cartridge and used the same black slipcase as the 1968 releases. The track order was rearranged to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length:

Program 1: Blowin' In The Wind; Masters Of War; Bob Dylan's Dream

Program 2: Girl From The North Country; Bob Dylan's Blues; A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

Program 3: Down The Highway; Talkin' World War III Blues; Corrina, Corrina

Program 4: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Oxford Town; Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance; I Shall Be Free

The UK CBS release is a version of Columbia 18 10 0190, released around the same time.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"En Roue Libre..." - 8-track stereo cartridge release, CBS 42-62193 (France), 1973:
For a mono LP release of this album with this title see Mono Album Releases.

CBS 42-62193 (France) - front of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers
This cartridge release is very rare! Like the mid-1970s USA Columbia 8-track release (see above) it had a black cartridge and used a black slipcase. The track order was rearranged to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length, but in a completely different sequence from the US releases:

Program 1: Girl From The North Country; Bob Dylan's Blues; Oxford Town; I Shall be Free

Program 2: Blowin' In The Wind; Masters Of War; Bob Dylan's Dream

Program 3: Down The Highway; Talkin' World War III Blues; Corrina, Corrina (as US release!)

Program 4: A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance

This album was never released in France on stereo vinyl! Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

CBS 40-62193 (UK) - cassette Side 2 (later 1970s release)

Dr. Walter Roedl has a copy of this cassette release that has a folded card insert which includes the Nat Hentoff sleeve notes on the inside. The cassette is light grey with orange CBS paper labels. My own copy looks like a later release - it has minimal artwork without the sleeve notes and an off-white cassette with black text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels. Both releases have only a crop of the front photo, but my later release shows more of the original picture.

The album's tracks have been reordered to make both sides similar lengths.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40-32390 (UK), 1980s (two releases):

CBS 40-32390 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (1980s release)
These 1980s releases have the new catalogue number introduced around 1982 and the new "CBS" logo. The cassette inserts now have barcodes, and both the inserts and the cassettes have the "LC|0149" code. The cassettes are light grey with black text printed directly on to them, there are no paper labels. They both look identical. At first sight the inserts are also identical but the track listing is different - the first copy has six tracks on Side 1 and seven tracks on Side 2, the alternate copy has seven tracks on Side 1 and six on Side 2.

The tracks are also reordered.

First release - Side 1: Blowin' In the Wind; Girl From The North Country; Masters Of War; Down the Highway; Bob Dylan's Blues; A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall; Side 2: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Bob Dylan's Dream; Oxford Town; Talking World War III Blues; Corrina, Corrina; Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance; I Shall Be Free.

Alternate release - Side 1: Blowin' In the Wind; Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Bob Dylan's Dream; Oxford Town; Talking World War III Blues; Corrina, Corrina; Bob Dylan's Blues; Side 2: Girl From The North Country; Masters Of War; Down the Highway; Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance; A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall; I Shall Be Free.

CBS PC 145 (Australia) - cassette Side 1 by Stuart Moore (third release)

CBS PC 145 (Australia) - cassette Side 2 by Stuart Moore (third release)

These releases have no country of origin on the insert or the cassettes. The album's tracks have been reordered to make both sides similar lengths. Thanks to Augie Krater for spotting that "Freewheelin'" is shown as "Freewheeling" on the front of the insert, but is correct on the spine and on the cassette cases. All the cassettes have Dolby noise reduction.

The first release is from the early 1970s and has a folded insert with details of other CBS cassette releases on the flap. The inside is blank. The cassette is off-white with buff CBS paper labels, now glue-stained. The second and third releases have the same insert, blank on the reverse. The second cassette is light grey with blue text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels. The third cassette is smoked transparent grey with white text printed directly on it, there are again no paper labels. The text layout on both cassettes is identical.

Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40-62193 (Spain), 1972 (twice); CBS 40-32390 (Spain), 1983; CBS 40-32390 (PR) (Spain), 1984:

CBS 40-62193 (Spain), 1972 (first release):

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (first 1972 release)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - detail of outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (first 1972 release - "THE FREEWHEELIN!", second 1972 release is the same)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - inside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (first 1972 release)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - cassette Side 1, scan by Manuel García Jara (first 1972 release)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - cassette Side 2, scan by Manuel García Jara (first 1972 release)

This was the first cassette release of this album in Spain. It has a short insert. The cassette itself was made by BIAS S.A. in Barcelona (as were other Spanish CBS cassettes of this period) and the insert was printed by Offset ALG in Madrid. The album title is wrongly shown on the insert front and spine as "The Freewheelin!" The cassette is off-white and has orange CBS paper labels with black text. The album title is shown on the cassette labels as "The Freewheelin'".

CBS 40-62193 (Spain), 1972 (second release):

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1972 release)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - inside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1972 release)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - cassette Side 1 scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1972 release)

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - detail of cassette Side 1, scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1972 release - "DISCOS CBS S.A. - MADRID", also "THE FREEWHEELIN!")

CBS 40-62193 (Spain) - cassette Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1972 release)

The second Spanish cassette release was now made by Discos CBS, Madrid. It now has a longer folded insert. There is no printer's name on the insert this time. The album title is now shown as "The Freewheelin!" on both the insert and the cassette labels. The cassette is again off-white and has orange CBS paper labels with black text, dated "1972". Blowin' In The Wind is shown as "Blowin! In The Wind" on the Side 1 cassette label but not on the insert.

CBS 40-32390 (Spain), 1983; CBS 40-32390 (PR) (Spain), 1984:

CBS 40-32390 (Spain) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (1983 release)

These releases with the new catalogue number are both dated 1983. The first cassette was released in 1983 and it has the second design used by CBS in Spanish tapes, used from 1978 until 1984: an insert with one panel for reissues, two panels for new releases; and white cassettes with lettering in pink, orange or red (in this case orange). Both inserts are virtually identical except that the first tape was not sold in the "Precio Redondo" series and it doesn't have "(PR)" on the insert spine. Both releases have the album title as "The Freewheelin!" on the front and spine of the outside insert, all titles with an apostrophe (') on the rear of the insert and inside are written correctly.

The "(PR)" on the spine of the 1984 cassette insert means "Precio Redondo [Nice Price]". The front insert is again a single folded card with track titles and timings on the inside. It has a light grey plastic cassette with black text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels. The black text was actually introduced in 1984 because the previous orange text was prone to smudging!

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40-62193 (Denmark), early 1970s:

CBS 40-62193 (Denmark) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Lars M. Banke

The insert for this unique Danish cassette release looks exactly the same as that of the early 1970s UK release above, and the cassette case has "MADE IN ENGLAND" embossed on Side 2. However, both sides of the cassette labels have the "NCB" logo of the Nordic copyright organisation and "Made in Denmark". The cassette is off-white with pale buff CBS paper labels. Lars M. Banke has no knowledge of any other Danish cassette releases!

Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo cassette release, CBS/Jigu Records Corporation KJPK-0596 (South Korea), Oct 1988:

CBS/Jigu Records Corporation KJPK-0596 (South Korea) - cassette slipcase front scan by Ger Hemel

Jigu Records Corporation released records in South Korea on behalf of CBS/Sony Japan between 1978 and 1991. Although this cassette release is undated, I estimate it comes from 1988, the same date as the equivalent vinyl release, KJPL-0596. The cassette comes in a standard hinged plastic case, but does not have the usual insert. Instead it has a card outer slipcase, of the type also used in the USA for some cassette releases. The cassette is black with grey paper labels.

Thanks to Ger Hemel and Patrick Helfrich for information and scans.

Columbia 40-32390 (NL) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Tom Willems (first release)
These releases are both dated 1975 but come from after 1991 as they have the new catalogue number and "CBS" has been replaced by "Columbia". Tom Willem's first release copy has minimal artwork and a light grey plastic cassette with black text printed directly on it, there are no paper labels. There is also a folded thin paper insert with the current Columbia "Nice Price" catalogue.

Paul Shenton's second release copy has a completely different wider insert and the cassette is now transparent smoked grey with white text, there are again no paper labels.
