"Love And Theft"
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Revised 07 January, 2024.
US release, Columbia CK 85975, 11 Sep 2001. The album title, the only one of Bob's album titles to be in quotes, is believed to reference a 1993 book by Eric Lott, "Love & Theft: Blackface Minstrelsy and the American Working Class". For Limited Editions with a bonus disc, see 2001. For a Chinese release which may not be authorised see Questionable Releases. Tracklisting: Tweedle Dee And Tweedle Dum; Mississippi; Summer Days; Bye And Bye; Lonesome Day Blues; Floater (Too Much To Ask); High Water (For Charlie Patten); Moonlight; Honest With Me; Po' Boy; Cry A While; Sugar Baby. This is a new recording of Mississippi - three unreleased takes of the original version from the 1997 Time Out of Mind sessions were released in 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs. This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). "Love And Theft" is also available on the SA-CD in 5.1 surround sound. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for scans of an postcard-sized Columbia US advertising flyer promoting the album and Bob's 2001 US tour, with the chance to win prizes by entering an ID number at bobdylan.com. |

Sony Music Studios UK
CD-R came in a clear plastic wallet with a white folded Sony Music Studios

There is no album title or catalogue number. For a German CD-R 4-track single with the same disc design and the same song title mistake, see International Singles (2000s). This Limited Edition came in a
three-panel digipak and included a bonus disc with two rarities. Because
this Limited Edition contains rarities, it's also listed in 2001. There are slight differences inside the digipaks in that the inside of the US release has black bars between the three sections while they are white in the Austrian release. The US release also has a semi-circular cut-out at the left edge to assist removing the booklet, the Austrian release doesn't. The US discs are CK 85975 (same as the regular release) and CSK 54967 |

"Love And Theft" - single CD edition, Columbia 2-504364 (Brazil), Mar 2002:
Thanks to Alex Froemming for this album. The packaging is identical to the US edition apart from the catalogue number and the Portuguese information shown on right. The CD itself is also slightly different, with Portuguese copyright text.
"Love And Theft" - advance promo CD-R, Columbia/Sony Music Studios CH 90340 (USA), 5 Jun 2003:
"Love And Theft" - hybrid SA-CD release, Columbia CH 90340 (USA/Canada)/Columbia 512357 6 (Europe), Sep 2003:
This release is housed in a fold-out digipak and the disc contains a CD version and SA-CD versions in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. The CD layer is exactly the same as the 2001 release.
There is an 12-page booklet with pictures of Bob from 2001. As can be seen, only the centre page of the hybrid SA-CD booklet can be said to be new, in that it shows a wider crop of the picture of Bob from the 2001 Limited Edition booklet. The SA-CD design reproduces a Columbia US vinyl label used in the 1930s. The yellow sticker on the front of the digipak is unique to this release.
"Love And Theft" - hybrid SA-CD release, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab UDSACD 2164 (USA), Nov 2017:
"Love And Theft" - hybrid SA-CD release, Sony Music MHCP 10016 (Japan), 17 Dec 2003:
"Love And Theft" - remastered CD release,
Columbia 512357 2 (Europe), 29 Mar 2004:
Fourteen out of the fifteen Dylan albums released in 2003 as hybrid
SA-CD editions were released in the USA and Europe in 2004 as CD-only versions in
jewel cases. Although there was no need to replace the existing CD
release, "Love And Theft" was also included in this release in
Europe only. The fourteen excluding "Love And Theft" were released in
Japan in card sleeves.
"Love And Theft" - remastered CD release, Columbia 5123572 (Australia), 2004:
"The Complete Album Collection Vol. One" - 47CD boxed set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; USB stick, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK37" plus "DISC 41". The CDs are different in detail, the US "Love And Theft" CD has catalogue number "88691924312D41", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-41". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for these CDs.
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
