udio: International Album Releases (Regular)Time Out Of Mind
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 07 January, 2024.
US release, Columbia CK 68556, 27 Sep 1997 For an Australian Tour 1998 Limited Edition with a bonus disc, see 1998. This title was one of the fifteen Dylan albums scheduled for release in late 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD, probably not only in stereo but also in 5.1 surround sound. It was removed from the final schedule and the hybrid SA-CD version remains unreleased. Thanks to Dag Braathen for scans of a Columbia US promo leaflet sent to record stores. |
Tracklisting: Love Sick (5:21); Dirt Road Blues (3:36); Standing In The Doorway (7:43); Million Miles (5:52); Tryin' To Get To Heaven (5:21); Til I Fell In Love With You (5:17); Not Dark Yet (6:29); Cold Irons Bound (7:15); Make You Feel My Love (3:32); Can't Wait (5:47); Highlands (16:31).
The remix of Love Sick on the Mar 2004 Limited Edition US Dylan compilation Victoria's Secret Exclusive: Lovesick (see 2004) is slightly longer and has a much cleaner sound than on the original Time Out Of Mind album, and it's possible it came from the unreleased remixed/remastered 2003 album. The version of Not Dark Yet on the Aug 2006 Limited Edition US CD single of Rollin' And Tumblin' (see 2006) also appears to be remastered, and may be from this version of the album too.
Daniel Lanois said of the Time Out Of Mind sessions that Bob left his (Daniel's) favourite tracks off the album - these out-takes have been rumoured for a long time: some out-takes from the album were finally released in Oct 2008 and more in Jan 2023. The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs (2008): Mississippi (three unreleased takes of original version - released in 2001 on "Love And Theft" in a new recording), Red River Shore (two takes of the rumoured unreleased song); Can't Wait (alternate take); Dreamin' Of You (unreleased song not previously known to collectors plus a radio edit R-0354, see 2008); Marchin' To The City (two takes of unreleased song not previously known to collectors). |

From Derek Barker’s review of Clinton Heylin’s “Behind The Shades: The 20th Anniversary Edition”: When it comes to Dylan’s approach to recording…. Clinton’s analysis hits the mark every time. One fascinating example which would only be picked up by someone who knows his subject intimately is Dylan’s – or should that be Daniel Lanois’ – failure to capture the sound and essence of Time Out of Mind on record, and how Dylan steadily perfected these songs in concert and set out re-releasing Time Out of Mind across a series of official downloads, live EPs and a Japanese live anthology.
The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 - Fragments: "Time Out of Mind" Sessions (1996-1997) (2023): for details of all the tracks see the relevant page: International Album Releases (Regular).
All the Time Out Of Mind songs have now appeared officially in a later live recording. From the performances that appeared on bobdylan.com and elsewhere:

A
single edit (4:28) of the album version of Not Dark Yet (6:30) appears on
Top 40 Bob Dylan, Sony
Music Holland 2CD release,
2019.
This edit misses out the
instrumental break between verses three and four and the instrumental ending
after verse four. All the four verses are present. As far as I can tell it’s
unique to this 2019 compilation, but it must date from 1997. Maybe it was intended as
a single release which never happened.
Cold Irons Bound

Vinyl and Tape Releases
"Time Out Of Mind" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, Columbia C2 68556 (USA), 1998:
The inner sleeves of Gerd Rundel's US copy of Columbia C2 68556 do not have the cut-outs as on the rear sides of the Dutch inner sleeves (see below). The records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 68983-2A, Side 2 - BL 68983-2A, Side 3 - AL 68984-2A, Side 4 - BL 68984-2A.
Thanks to Herta and Erwin Rundel for information and to Gerd and Erika Rundel for scans. Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for scans of the US front sleeve with a Grammy advertising sticker.
"Time Out Of Mind" - stereo cassette release, Columbia CT 68556 (USA), 27 Sep 1997:
The eleven songs were divided up with seven on the A-side and four including Highlands on the B-side. The cassette is clear plastic with white text, there are no paper labels.
Picture 2 appears to be from around 1974, since two pictures from the same session are now used in the Sep 2003 hybrid SA-CD edition of Blood On The Tracks.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Time Out Of Mind" - stereo cassette release, Columbia CT 68556 (Canada), 27 Sep 1997:
The text at the bottom of the inside of the insert of this Canadian release is different from that of the US cassette release. The cassette also has a different text layout and is transparent smoked grey with white text, there are no paper labels.
"Time Out Of Mind" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, Columbia COL 486936 1 (NL
for Europe), 1998:
I have a 1997 Columbia UK flyer advertising
Time Out Of Mind on one side and The Best Of Bob Dylan
on the other.
For front and rear sleeve differences see the detailed scans of each release. The records of my European copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01 486936 20 1A1; Side 2 - 01 486936 20 1B1; Side 3 - 01 486936 20 1C1; Side 4 - 01 486936 20 1D1.
Thanks to Hans Seegers for scans of the three different European front stickers and to Robert Kornovich for the photo of the European copy imported into the USA (where demand must have outstripped supply). Thanks also to Gerd and Erika Rundel.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding a copy on eBay with the records in transparent blue vinyl. It is almost certainly unauthorised by Columbia. Carl Torstensson has a copy with the records pressed in mottled blue vinyl. Unfortunately Hans Seegers says these are again fakes made in Germany without authorisation from Columbia. Thanks to Wiebke Dittmer for finding copies on eBay with "old gold" mottled vinyl and green vinyl. Again these are fakes. The sleeves look authentic but are made of inferior material. Thanks to Paul Shenton for the copy of the promotional poster.

"Time Out Of Mind" - stereo 180gm vinyl 2LP set, Columbia/Sony Music 8718469535446/Music On Vinyl MOVLP 1049 (NL for Europe), 24 Apr 2014:
Pachi Becerril has a copy where both sides of Record 1 are the same! The Side 1 and Side 2 labels are correct but you can see from the track widths on the vinyl that both sides of the disc are identical. Daniel Piancastelli also has a copy like this, and has sent a photo showing four tracks on Side 2 when there should only be three.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information and Marc Kuszel for scans.

The set comes in a wide sleeve containing both LPs in
picture inner sleeves as with previous releases. The vinyl pressing is the same as the 2014 Music On Vinyl European release MOVLP 1049. The records of Éamonn Ó Catháin's and my copies have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 98599 2A MOVLP1049, Side 2 - 98599 2B MOVLP1049, Side 3 - 98599 2C MOVLP1049, Side 4 - 98599 2D MOVLP1049 (the matrix numbers of the 2014 records were "1A-1D"). |

"Time Out Of Mind" - promo CD-R release, Columbia (no catalogue number) (UK), Aug-Sep 1997:
"Time Out Of Mind" - CD release, Columbia COL 486936 2 (Austria for Europe), 26 Sep 1997, re-released (date?):
There are four variants of this CD release reported to me so far. Unlike the US CD, my copy of this CD, bought in the UK on the day of release, comes in a black plastic tray, so there is no picture on the reverse of the rear insert. Pictures 4 and 5 from the 2LP set artwork are therefore missing. The CD is the original blue US style. Derek Davies' CD release was bought in the UK later than mine, and has a clear CD tray and Picture 4 restored on the reverse of the rear insert. Tom Willems has a copy bought in Holland on the day of release that is identical to David's. Juergen Flicker has a copy bought in the late 1990s in Germany that is similar to David's with a clear CD tray but with several differences as detailed below. The blue on both of these CDs are lighter in colour than mine.
Specific details are as follows:
Ian Woodward's promo CD is not shrink-wrapped and is the regular CD with a small sticker on the rear of the jewel case. The rear CD plastic case itself is embossed with "Sony Music" in the bottom left-hand corner. The rear insert is the second variant with "811"/"CDX" below the barcode as shown above. This copy had an insert for "DYLAN - Classic Bob Dylan on Nice Price", with 14 Nice Price CDs featured (6 on the front and 8 on the rear). In the bottom right-hand corner of the rear is the "Nice Price" logo, with a reference number: "11 055360-40".
Tom Willems's copy is a fourth variant with two noticeable differences from Juergen Flicker's third variant copy:
Thanks to Derek Davies, Tom Willems, Juergen Flicker and Tom Willems for information and scans.
"Time Out Of Mind" - promo CD release and press kit, Columbia COL 486936 2 (France), 26 Sep 1997:
"Time Out of Mind" - MiniDisc release, Columbia 486936 8 (Austria for Europe), 1997:
Thanks to Stuart Moore for scans of this release, which comes in a MiniDisc jewel case with an 8-page booklet.
"Time Out Of Mind" - promo and commercial CD releases, Sony Records SRCS 8456 (Japan), 30 Sep 1997:
Thanks to Wil Gielen for the information that the five free promotional postcards shown were given away with early commercial copies of the album that did not have the "ALBUM OF THE YEAR" front sticker - the copy with the sticker was on sale later and did not have the postcards. The promo release shown did not have the postcards either.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that the final set of albums in The Complete Album Collection will be released by Sony Music in Japan on 20 Dec 2014. Time Out Of Mind will be SICP-30584. For this release, see below.
Thanks to Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen for information and scans.
"Time Out of Mind" - MiniDisc release, Sony Records SRYS-1229 (Japan), 20 Nov 1999:
"Time Out Of Mind" - promo and commercial CD releases, Columbia 486936 2 (Australia), 26 Sep 1997, re-released 2000s; remastered "Gold Series" CD release, Columbia/Sony Music 190758667928 (Australia), 19 Oct 2018:
Columbia 486936 2 (Australia), Sep 1997 - promo CD:
Columbia 486936 2 (Australia), Sep 1997 - commercial CD (re-released 2000s):
The first commercial release of the regular Australian album had a completely different CD with a standard red Columbia design. The 2000s re-release used the same design as the promo disc and the Limited Edition CD below, but with a black centre ring.
Columbia 491660 2 (Australia), Aug 1998 - 2CD "1998 Australasian Tour Commemorative Edition":
Columbia 491660 2 (Australia) - 1998 Limited Edition front with sticker on jewel case (my copy) |
This 2CD edition in a slimline jewel case contains a bonus disc SAMP 2004 titled Bob Dylan Live '97 & '98 with seven live rarities from 1997 and 1998. For more details, see 1998. The album CD (486936 2) used the same blue 1930s 78 rpm design as the promo disc shown above. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for the scan of a different disc for SAMP 2004 with a different text layout. My disc is correctly titled "BOB DYLAN LIVE '97 & '98" on one line, Gerd's disc is titled just "LIVE '97" (incorrect since two live tracks are from 1998) with "Bob Dylan" on a second line. This could be an incorrect early release that was quickly corrected. |

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK36" plus "DISC 40". The CDs are different in detail, the US Time Out Of Mind CD has catalogue number "88691924312D40", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-40".
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
