Original US stereo LP, Columbia FC 36120, 20 Aug 1979 This album was produced by Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett and recorded at Muscle Shoals Studio, Sheffield, AL. Thanks to Steven Fant for the photo from Jul 2009. The building is now called Cypress Moon Studios. Saved (1980) was also recorded here.The front train/workman design is from a woodcut by Catherine Kanner. The rear sleeve photograph is by Nick Saxton and the inner sleeve photograph by Morgan Renard. This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Slow Train Coming is also available on the SA-CD in 5.1 surround sound! |

7" Singles: Trouble In Mind (single B-side 1979/80 - the Brazilian release is supposed to have had the full version of the song, other releases had an edit with one verse missing), for all see 1979. The full 5:13 version was finally released officially in Oct 2011 on the Sony Music Germany compilation Pure Dylan: An Intimate Look At Bob Dylan, see 2011.
The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Ye Shall Be Changed
The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Live/Deluxe Edition) (2017): Ain’t No Man Righteous (No, Not One); Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody. Both of these were short listed for The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3, but not finally released until Nov 2017 on both the 2CD Live Edition and the 8CD Deluxe Edition.

The US inner sleeve is heavy glossy paper, otherwise the album is similar to my UK copy below. Stuart Moore has a white label promo copy with a gold stamp on the rear sleeve. Gerd Rundel's white label copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1J, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2M.
Steven Fant's copy has a red sticker on the front sleeve with white text promoting four tracks: Gotta Serve Somebody; Precious Angel; When You Gonna Wake Up? and Do Right To Me, Baby (Do Unto Others). Gerd Rundel's 1980 copy has two stickers with one promoting the 1979 Grammy Award win for Gotta Serve Somebody (awarded 22 Feb 1980) plus Man Gave Names To All The Animals and a second sticker promoting Slow Train, Gotta Serve Somebody and Precious Angel. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1J, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2H.
The record of Stuart Moore's promo copy has white Columbia promo labels. There are two versions of the commercial record labels. The record of Gil Lamont's commercial copy has red Columbia labels with the yellow Columbia logo in a ring and matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1C, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2B. Stuart Moore's copy has slightly different labels with an ASCAP copyright below the "B. Dylan" composer credit. The records of Phill Townsend's white label copy have matrix numbers: Side1 - PAL 36120-1C, Side2 - PBL 36120-2A.
Lars M. Banke has a copy with a gold stamp "FOR MILITARY SALE ONLY" at top left of the rear sleeve. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1AC , Side 2 - PAL-36120-2AC.
The sleeve of Gerd Rundel's 1980s copy, Columbia PC 36120, has a wraparound sticker with a barcode on the rear and “PC 36120” on the spine. The record has catalogue number PC 36120 and handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1AD, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2AF. The labels again have an ASCAP copyright below the "B. Dylan" composer credit.
Stuart Moore's US songbook is published by The Benson Company, Tennessee, also listed on the back as "Exclusive Distributor to the Religious Trade", in association with Special Rider Music.

The first copy of the US first release, Columbia FC 36120, was exported to Australia with all instances of "Columbia" erased with black marker pen on the rear sleeve plus on the spine, and the ring of "Columbia" logos on the record labels obscured with black rings. The black rings on the labels look like they have been printed directly on the labels, they do not look like stickers as with all other export copies shown on the web-site. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1K, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2D. The second copy has a similar sleeve, with "Columbia" erased with black marker pen in three places on the rear sleeve plus on the spine. This time the ring of "Columbia" logos on the record labels has been obscured with white stickers. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1K, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2E. |

This album was released on reel-to-reel tape, in
4-track stereo running at 3¾" per second. All tracks are the standard stereo
album versions. Not only was it the last Dylan album to be released on
reel-to-reel tape, it was the first to be released on tape since Dylan
in 1973! No tape versions were released of the Asylum
albums or any of the six intervening Columbia albums! The tape reel comes in a black card box, hinged on the left, with a white wrap-around label and a separate label on the top of the box. The tracklisting has been revised to make the four programs of equal length:

Do Right To Me, Baby (Do Unto Others) occurs twice, first split between Programs 1 and 2, and then repeated in full on Program 4! Because the split track is a rarity, it is also listed in 1979, along with the Canadian 8-track release, which has the same tracklist.

The 1979 cassette release, Columbia FCT 36120, has a folded insert with details of other contemporary Columbia cassette releases on the flap and on the inside. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. Steven Fant's insert is identical to Gerd's on the outside, but has different Columbia releases listed inside. The last catalogue number listed on Steven's insert is "P2T 35564", while the last catalogue number listed on Gerd's inset is "JCT 35991" ("P2T 35564" is also listed). Neither list releases with catalogue numbers higher than "FCT 36120". The two FCT 36120 cassettes are identical.

The cassette looks identical to the 1979 cassette apart from the catalogue number change. The first Columbia US Dylan cassette to have a barcode on first release was Saved in 1980, so this must date from before that.

The late 1980s release has the same catalogue number and the same smaller insert, this time with a barcode instead of the names of five featured tracks. The cassette is now transparent smoked grey with white text, although the text layout looks identical to that of the previous release. All three cassettes have Dolby noise reduction.

It came in a brown paper sleeve. The Dylan songs are: Precious Angel; I Believe In You (mispelled "Belieive"); Slow Train; Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others). This is the second AFRTS album with tracks from Slow Train Coming - P-18626 (probably a Various Artists compilation) included Gotta Serve Somebody, scans required!

As
well as the country of origin details shown on the rear, the sleeve has “LITHO IN CANADA”
printed on the spine. Like that of the US release, the rear sleeve has a
barcode. The record was made in Canada and has red Columbia
labels with yellow logos in a ring round the circumference. Like the US
releases above, there are two record label variants - the first is missing
the ASCAP copyright below the song titles and the second has the copyright
text. Both records shown
have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36120 1A 2GHZ, Side 2 - BL

This release with the same catalogue number as the US 8-track release has a black slipcase with a 99c "Bargain Bin" sticker. The tape cartridge is red and has one label overlapping the end. Like other Canadian 8-track releases, the rear of the slipcase is generic and the reverse of the tape cartridge is blank. |

The outside of the first 1980s insert now has a barcode, the inside of the insert has song titles. The cassette is clear transparent grey with white text – there are again no paper labels.

Thanks to Bruce Mulle for photos of his UK test pressing. It has plain
white labels and comes in a plain white sleeve. The only way of identifying
it is by the handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-86095-A1, Side 2 -
CBS-S-86095-B1. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a CBS UK test pressing on eBay from a German seller. The record is the same as Bruce's with plain white labels. There is a typewritten cover sheet on continuous stationery dated "030879" (3 Aug 1979) with all the record details. The sleeve has German text "Inhalt: BOB DYLAN [Contents: BOB DYLAN]" / "Unverkäufliches Musterexemplar [Material Sample Not For Sale]" plus "MADE IN ENGLAND". Hanns Peter Bushoff of Sony Music Germany has never seen anything like this before for Dylan or any CBS artists, and if such promo items existed, they'd also be seen in, for example, the Springsteen collecting world. Its authenticity therefore cannot be confirmed. |

The "LC|0149" code on the record labels is on the bottom text line left of the centre hole. The record of the copy shown (although bought on the day of release) has written matrix numbers: Side 1 - S-CBS-86095-A2, Side 2 - S-CBS-86095-B1 (presumably copies with -A1/-A1 matrices exist). The front of the inner sleeve with the Dylan picture has a small cut-away area at the top (not visible in the scan) to enable the record to be removed more easily. The inner sleeve has folded-under flaps on the side with text, which makes it the rear.

The rear sleeve has two differences as shown: “CB|271” in a rectangle has been added at top right with “57” in a circle below it; “LC|0149” in a capsule has been added at rear bottom right next to the CBS logo.
On the record labels the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is now “CBS 86095” instead of “S CBS 86095”. The first copy shown dates from around 1981 and still has “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the bottom of the labels, and arrows below “STEREO” to the left of the centre hole. The "LC|0149" capsule is below "33⅓ RPM" to the right of the centre hole. The song titles are still centred. The record of the copy shown has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86095-2A-4, Side 2 - 01-86095-1B-8. Peter Oudejans has a copy with labels of this layout but where “MADE IN ENGLAND” is now in the circumference text, with no text at the bottom. I do not have the Side 2 label of this copy.
The record labels of the third early 1980s release are again totally different from those of the first early 1980s release: there are no arrows below "Stereo", which is now in upper/lower case instead of capitals; "33⅓ RPM" is now to the left of the centre hole; “LC|0149” in a capsule is now at top right instead of on the second line to the right of the centre hole; the song titles are left aligned instead of centred; “MADE IN ENGLAND” is now in the circumference text to the right. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-S-86095-A-2, Side 2 - CBS-86095-B-3.

The 1984 release has a new catalogue number, "CBS 32524". The sleeve was again printed by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. The record comes in a generic CBS “NICE PRICE” white inner sleeve dated 1984 with details of other albums in the series, so the printed inner sleeve from the 1979 release is missing. For this reason the musician and other credits from the front of the 1979 inner sleeve are now printed on the rear sleeve at top left. The CBS logo and the new catalogue number are printed in the top right corner of the rear sleeve and the copyright text on the bottom is different. The late 1980s copy shown comes in the same sleeve as the 1984 album. It has a different generic CBS “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve, now black. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS S 86095 A2 (handwritten), 32524 (stamped); Side 2 - CBS 86095 B3 (handwritten), 32524 (stamped). The only differences that I can see between the 1984 and the late 1980s record labels are that the white CBS copyright information at the bottom of the 1984 label has been moved to the circumference text of the late 1980s label, which is now a much bolder white.

The 1979 release has a single folded card as the insert
with just the track details on the inside. The first cassette (variant 1) is light grey with printed text in black, there are no
paper labels. Paul Shenton's second copy (variant 2) has the same insert but has a white cassette with exactly the same printed text in blue, there are again no paper labels. Paul Shenton's third copy (variant 3) again has the same insert but has another light grey cassette with black printed text, there are again no paper labels. This time there is a European "LC|0149" code on the left of each cassette below the CBS logo. The "LC" code was missing from the first releases and means this release is later than the other two. |

The promo copy shown was exported to West Germany with an accompanying orange "Plattenpass [Record Passport]" promo letter describing the release. It has a gold foil stamp on the rear sleeve with German text "Unverkäufliches Muster" [Material Not For Sale]".
The inner sleeve was the same as the UK release on the front but different on the rear. In the central text, below “Percussion: Barry Beckett…” there are nine lines of text, grouped in three paragraphs of three lines each (the UK inner sleeve edition has only four lines). Mark Knopfler and Pick Withers from Dire Straits appear courtesy of Warner Bros Records, as on the UK inner sleeve rear. The text at bottom right reads “© 1979 CBS Inc 86095” (UK: “© 1979 CBS Inc CBS 86095”). The record of Sergio Mariano Romay's copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1K (handwritten) 01-86095-3A-3 (stamped) BH (faintly handwritten), Side 2 - 01-86095-1B-1.
Lars M. Banke has spotted that Man Gave Names To All The Animals on Side 2 has been misprinted as "Man Give Names To All The Animals", the same as the Portuguese release below.

The 1983 release has a new catalogue number, CBS 32524. The front sleeve is the same as the 1979 release, but there are differences on the rear sleeve at top right and bottom right, details shown. The record comes in what looks like the same inner sleeve as before, still including the "86095" catalogue number at rear bottom right. There is one change - on the 1979 inner sleeve rear Mark Knopfler and Pick Withers from Dire Straits appear courtesy of Warner Bros Records, on the 1983 inner sleeve rear they appear courtesy of Phonogram Island. This may be a 1991 release because the sleeve and record labels both have "Sony Music Entertainment Inc." There is a barcode and a different copyright line on the rear sleeve. The red CBS record labels have a different layout from those of the late 1980s release. The record comes in the usual printed inner sleeve and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86095-1A-5 (stamped), 01-32524-1A-5 (handwritten), Side 2 - 01-86095-1B-3 (stamped), 01-32524- (handwritten). The incomplete matrix number on Side 2 is a manufacturer's error.

There were three releases of the French album. The first release was made in France and was in fact the last Bob Dylan album to be manufactured in France. The first release has "Made in France" on the rear sleeve. The rear sleeve of the second and third releases is identical apart from the text now reading "Printed in Holland", because the second and third releases were manufactured in Holland and imported to France. The second release has a front sticker in English promoting Gotta Serve Somebody and Man Gave Names To All The Animals. The third release had a front sticker in English promoting the track now called just "Animals" (Man Gave Names To All The Animals). Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy of the third release where the matrix numbers are: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1K (handwritten) 01-86095-3A-4 (stamped), Side 2 - 01-86095-1B-3 (stamped). Michel Pomarede has a copy of the third release made in Holland with a different front sticker with the full name of the track Man Gave Names To All The Animals.

This extremely rare advance promo release comes in a generic
CBS Spain promotional sleeve with an information label on the front describing the album.
The sleeve has a rear cut-out to show a record label, but in this case the
record is in the standard inner sleeve, so the label cannot be seen (see below). Only 25-30 copies of
this release were made, distributed to CBS commercial agents throughout
Spain. The sleeve just has "CBS - DISCO PROMOCIONAL [CBS - PROMOTIONAL
RECORD]" on the spine and the printer name on the back (Offset ALG, Madrid,
as previous releases and the commercial copies of this album). The front label reads "Adelanto Promocional. Nuevo disco de Bob Dylan Slow Train Coming. Incluye el single El hombre puso nombre a los animales [Promotional advance. New record of Bob Dylan: Slow Train Coming. Includes the single: Man Gave Names To All The Animals]". The record has white "1970s-style" CBS promo labels, different from Jordi Badell's later promo copy, see below. (These labels are actually the design that replaced the design used for the labels of Jordi's copy.) On Side 2 track 3 is wrongly titled as "When You Gonna Wake Me Up", this was corrected on the later promo and commercial labels. The record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86095 A, Side 2 - 86095 B. This release came with two sleeve variants - the first was withdrawn and is
very rare. As can be seen, the rear photo is incorrectly cropped so that
Bob's silhouette is much larger and the top of the ship's mast is missing. Both copies have the same card
inner sleeve and record, as well as a promo insert with the song lyrics in
English and a CBS Spain Dylan discography. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels. Both
sleeve and record were made in Spain. The
sleeve was printed in Spain by Offset ALG of Madrid, and the Discos CBS
address shown is
Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16. Manuel García Jara and Jordi Badell have later promo copies of this album than the one above in the first variant sleeve with white "1960s-style" CBS record labels (actually an earlier design than the labels above) and a promo booklet in Spanish. The record labels have the text "DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA SU VENTA [PROMOTIONAL RECORD SALE PROHIBITED]". Manuel's first copy has record labels which show the playing speed of 33⅓r.p.m. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-36120-1K 86095-A, Side 2 - PBL-36120-2F 86095-B. Manuel's second copy (the same as Jordi's) has record labels where the playing speed is omitted. |

The sleeve of this release with the new catalogue number "CBS 32524" is similar to the 1992 CBS/Sony sleeve below, except that it does not have a barcode on the rear at top left. The front sleeve has a “PRECIO REDONDO de CBS” sticker in Spanish as the copy below. The rear sleeve and the spine have “CBS 32524”. The sleeve was again printed in Madrid by Offset A.L.G., S.A. The Discos CBS address on the rear sleeve is now Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046-Madrid (Manuel explains that Discos CBS did not in fact move offices, that part of Paseo de la Castellana was renamed "Avenida del Generalísimo" during the Franco regime, but reverted to its previous name after Franco died). The record still has orange/yellow labels and was made by Discos CBS S.A. It comes in the usual inner sleeve. This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86095 A, Side 2 - 86095 B. |

Hans Seegers has a 1982 Spanish copy of Another Side Of Bob Dylan where Side 2 is mispressed and plays Side 2 of Slow Train Coming! This is very rare as it was quickly withdrawn.

The front sleeve of the copy with the variant 1 record has a “PRECIO REDONDO de CBS” sticker in Spanish plus another sticker with the price of 795 pesetas, and the name of the record store El Corte Inglés. The front sleeve of the copy with the variant 2 record has no stickers. The variant 1 record was made by CBS itself, and now has red CBS labels. The inner sleeve is plain white with a cut-out on one side to allow one of the record labels to be seen. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 32524-A (handwritten, very faintly), 86095-A (stamped), Side 2 - 32524-B (stamped). The variant 2 record was now made by Technodisco S.A. of Madrid for CBS and this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86095 A (the old catalogue number), Side 2 - 32524 B.

This release is the rarest apart from the promo albums above. The sleeve has new catalogue number "CBS 32424" and the record has red CBS/Sony labels. The front sleeve has a "NICE PRICE" sticker in English. The rear sleeve now has a barcode at top left, and still has the CBS logo at bottom right as the 1980s sleeve above. The Discos CBS address is again Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046-Madrid. The sleeve was again printed in Madrid by Offset A.L.G., S.A. but the record this time was made for CBS by Tecnodisco S.A., Madrid. Manuel García Jara has a copy with a US promotional
sticker on the front sleeve together with an EMI price sticker for $14.90
for West Malaysia only (that part of Malaysia on the island of Borneo).
Manuel thinks this copy is actually
from 1982 because he has Singapore/Malaysia copies of Desire, Saved and Shot Of Love
with exactly the same West Malaysia price sticker. This copy has the same
mistake on Side 2 with tracks 1 and 2 reversed, but the record label has the
actual tracklist and there is also a sticker on the rear sleeve with the actual
tracklist. The 1982 record labels differ from those of the 1979 release in that the copy shown has "MADE IN MALAYSIA" added to the circumference text. Are there copies with "MADE IN SINGAPORE" on the record labels as with Blood On The Tracks? The record of the 1982 copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 25AP-1610A, Side 2 - 25AP-1610B. |

This Hong Kong cassette release has a unique cassette insert that also wraps round the outside of the case and was presumably originally protected by shrink-wrap. The promo release of this album has a gold embossed CBS promo stamp on the rear sleeve and the text "PROMOTION ONLY NOT FOR SALE" on the record labels. The first commercial release of this album had a sticker with text "FEATURING THE SINGLE GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY". The two pictures show that it was placed differently on each copy. The record has the same inner sleeve as the UK release, with orange/yellow CBS labels. The labels of the promo copy and the first commercial copy have songs credited to "Albert". The promo record shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - MX 88296, Side 2 - MX 88297. Stuart Moore's second commercial copy has the songs credited to "Warner Bros" instead of "Albert", which dates it after 1981. The text elements on these labels are placed differently, for example the title and artist names are on two lines instead of one on the original labels. The sleeve is the same as the first release without a sticker. |

Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and from late 1978/early 1979 the longer bottom edge text includes CBS copyright information. All these record labels have the longer copyright text.

The South African catalogue number was also used in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) but with different CBS labels. In South Africa the sleeve was made by Interpak and in Rhodesia by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for sleeves they printed for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record companies. Both the South African and Rhodesian releases were manufactured for CBS by The Gramophone Company, part of EMI (bought by Universal in 2012). Michel Pomarede confirms that these releases also had the faded out Slow Train.

The record has orange/yellow CBS labels, the style used in Zimbabwe in the early 1980s, and Manuel thinks they look very strange: He thinks the record had different labels before, maybe South African. These labels have been removed, but not completely and new labels were glued over the originals, there are many traces of previous labels; These can bee seen by looking carefully at the record but is not visible on the scans. "Speed 33⅓" is printed above "Reveille Music" to the left to the centre hole (not present on South African labels). Rhodesian/Zimbabwe records are scarce, so to have more than one version of the same album is very rare. The second release has an identical sleeve, but the rear has a white sticker with the text "Pop Shop", a record shop from Salisbury (now Harare). This sticker has been partially removed - under the sticker is "4-A", the record company code used by Belmont Printers. The record still has orange/yellow CBS labels but they are very different from those of the first Zimbabwean release. "BOB DYLAN" below the album title above the centre hole is in capital letters instead of lowercase letters, and these labels have one song title per line; the first release labels have the song titles in a continuous text (as the South African labels above). Again Manuel says that if you look carefully at the labels you will again see there were previous labels underneath - the detail scan still shows the copyright text of a previous label faintly visible on the circumference! The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-36120 DNW-2402, Side 2 - BL-36120 DNW-2402 (same as before).

The late 1980s release of the album was this time marketed and distributed by the Zimbabwe Music Corporation. The rear sleeve again has the "4-A" code of Belmont Printers at bottom right. The record has marbled blue record labels with the new CBS logo and blue text, with a completely different layout from the previous Zimbabwe releases. |

This copy of Slow Train Coming was bought on eBay by Lars M. Banke. The sellers claims that this is a Zambia pressing, but to Lars it looks more like a variant of the early 1980s Zimbabwe pressings. Lars says "Compared to the first 1980s Zimbabwe variant the space between the song titles and "Composed by: Bob Dylan" (with a colon after "by" on Side 1) and the omission of "Marketed and distributed by Gramophone Record Co. (Pty) Ltd." at the bottom of the label of Side 1." The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36120 DNW 2402, Side 2 - BL 36120 DNW 2402.
The eBay seller says: "This is not the Zimbabwe pressing. This is differentiated from Zimbabwe by primarily the quality of the record labels being lower and importantly the label font, which you will see across many Zambian releases. If you compare to South African or Zimbabwean record label fonts it is different. Check against Bob Dylan pressings from Zimbabwe on Discogs, the text is always in a neater/different font. Also the sleeves are usually lower quality than the Zimbabwean sleeves as well, and have some imperfections like the print errors in the right corners. Check on Discogs and compare the record label pictures. Compare with AC/DC, Prince or Led Zeppelin LPs from Zambia. It's a bit of nuanced area but I am something of an expert in the area so I can usually tell at a glance where it was pressed. For sure there is a Zimbabwe pressing of this Bob Dylan album out there but this is not it."

The promo album (not shown) is stamped "AMOSTRA INVENDÁVEL [SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE]" on the rear sleeve. There is a paper inner sleeve with a small raised flap on the front to assist removing the record, which has orange/yellow Discos CBS labels. The sleeve, inner sleeve and record were made in Brazil. The record was made for Discos CBS by Gravaçôes Eléctricas S.A. of São Paulo. On the Side 2 label track 1 is incorrectly shown as "GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKINS".

The next release, Discos CBS 138.718, can be dated from late 1986/early 1987 from other Discos CBS catalogue numbers. Hans Seegers' promo copy had a CBS promo stamp "AMOSTRA INVENDÁVEL [SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE]" and the record had handwritten written matrix numbers Side 1 - 138.718 A AL-36120, Side 2 - 138.718 B BL-36120.
The front sleeve has a “THE NICE PRICE” sticker. The rear sleeve of the copy shown also has a record store sticker from Blumenau, Southern Brazil. The rear has the new catalogue number at top right, and also has the new cassette release number at bottom right. The copy shown does not have a picture inner sleeve, but it may just be missing. This time, the record was manufactured by Discos CBS itself in Río de Janeiro. The labels are still orange/yellow, but there are considerable differences: track timings are now included and also Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking on side 2 is now correct.

This album was made in Argentina and has the title and song titles translated into Spanish. The test pressing (Discos CBS 20.039) comes in
a white card promo sleeve with
a front sticker with red typed text in Spanish. The record has blank Discos CBS
labels with typed text and promo stickers, and the copy shown has stamped US
matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 36120, Side 2 - BL 36120.
The commercial sleeve has a CBS logo on the front and a Columbia logo on the rear! The record now has orange Columbia labels with the song titles in Spanish and English. Both copies shown have matrix numbers Side 1 - AL 36120, Side 2- BL 36120 (the US matrix numbers). The promo copy shown has a sticker with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION DISC SALE PROHIBITED]" on the rear sleeve and DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA LA VENTA [PROMOTIONAL DISC SALE PROHIBITED] printed on the record labels.

The original Argentinean cassette
release has only the Columbia logo on the insert and the cassette labels
with no mention of CBS. The folded insert is blank on the inside. The
cassette was made in the USA and is white with orange Columbia paper labels. Two copies are shown of the 1980s cassette release, which is also on the Columbia label with no mention of CBS. The "Nice Price" logo on the front of the smaller insert is printed, not a sticker. Both insert fronts are the same, but the inside of Sergio's copy has the text in black, while the insert of Manuel's copy has the text in purple. The 1980s cassettes are both white with text printed directly on to them, there are no paper labels. Sergio's cassette has five screws on Side 2, and both sides have orange text. In contrast, Manuel's cassette has four screws on the front, and the Side 2 text is printed in red, not orange! |

This rare album has a standard sleeve (untranslated album title) but no front logo. There is also no inner sleeve - the record is housed in a clear plastic bag. The record itself has orange/yellow CBS labels with the song titles in English and Spanish. As with many other South American releases, the Spanish translated song titles differ from those of other Spanish-speaking countries, such as those from Argentina above. The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - "COL 14-1304 A 5-11-79", Side 2 - "COL 14-1304 B 5-11-79". As an American style date of "May 11, 1979" would be before the US release, I assume this is the European style date of "5 Nov 1979". |

The Canadian CD itself was manufactured in the USA, as there was at that time no Columbia CD pressing plant in Canada. CBS CDCBS 32524 is from the end of the 1980s and the CD was made in Austria. It is silver with red panels and black text.
The 1990s release Columbia COL CD 32524 has a stapled multi-page booklet as the front insert. The picture in the centre of the booklet is the same as the one from the inner sleeve of the LP. The difference in the colour of the sky in the two reproductions of the rear LP sleeve picture are very noticeable - the sky on the rear insert is tinted pink, while the picture on the back of the folded front insert is tinted blue. Keith Schweiger has a copy of Columbia COL CD 32524 with a red CD tray and a "Nice Price" front sticker. The insert booklet has a "Nice Price" promotional catalogue stapled in the centre, which my copy doesn't have. The CD is the same as mine.

This release has a folded front insert.
Keith Schweiger's copy (variant 1) has stickers
on the reverse of the front insert and also on the rear insert. I believe
these inserts could have been sourced from the USA and then stickered.
Inserts of the US release are shown for comparison. The inserts from Paul
Shenton's copy (variant 2) have no stickers, all the information is printed. The CD was
made in South Africa (R.S.A.) and is dated 1996. It was manufactured and
distributed on behalf of Columbia by the Gallo Record Company.

This release is housed in a three-fold digipak and the hybrid SA-CD disc contains a CD version and
SA-CD versions in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. The inside of the
digipak has two previously unpublished pictures of Bob from 1979 including
one at the recording session with Mark Knopfler, etc. The picture behind the
CD tray is the one from the LP inner sleeve. There is no booklet. The hybrid SA-CD design reproduces
the Columbia US stereo vinyl label used
in 1979. My North American copy illustrated was distributed from Canada, and has the same sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap as the one illustrated for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. This release is on a Blu-spec CD, an audio-only disc which is presumably
intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format, currently on sale in
Japan only. The copy shown is still
sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The
release date is shown as "09-9-30" (30 Sep 2009), the original release date
as "79-8-20" (20 Aug 1979) and the withdrawal date as "10-3-29" (29
Mar
2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK22" plus "DISC 26" (because Blonde On Blonde, Before The Flood and The Basement Tapes and Bob Dylan At Budokan had two CDs each). The CDs are different in detail, the US Slow Train Coming CD has catalogue number "88691924312D26", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-26". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming will be released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2013 remastered Slow Train Coming will be SICP 30500, more details will be added when available. |
