The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs (2008) |

This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to
existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the
dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

    Release date: 28 Apr 2009 (USA), 27 Apr 2009 (Europe), 27 May 2009
(Japan). The album artwork was designed by Coco Shinomiya, a Los-Angeles
based freelance art director and graphic designer (she's also interested in
hot rods and custom cars, see illustration below). Thanks to Roy Kelly and
Sean Wilenz writing in "The Bridge No. 34" (Summer 2009) for the information
that the cover photograph was taken in 1959 by Bruce Davidson,
sourced from Magnum Photos and used before on the cover of Larry's Brown's
book "Big Bad Love" (Vintage, 1991). (Bob is known to be a fan of
Larry Brown's writing.) Thanks to Moise Potié for the information that this
picture also appears in the 2005 No Direction Home DVD when Bob is
discussing Jack Kerouac. The rear photograph is of a band
of Romanian gypsy musicians taken in 1968 by Josef Koudelka. |

Track
listing of review copies: Beyond Here Lies Nothin'; Life Is Hard; My
Wife's Home Town; Forgetful Heart; Shake Shake Mama; I Feel A Change Coming
On; If You Ever Go To Houston; This Dream Of You, It's All Good. The tenth
    released track,
Jolene, was not included on the review copies.
Chicago After Dark was included on the copy of the album made
available to Bill Flanagan and is discussed during the interview included in
the liner notes. There are reportedly two other out-takes not included in
    the final album.
      Final track
listing: Beyond Here Lies Nothin' (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter); Life Is Hard
      (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter); My
Wife's Home Town (Bob Dylan/Willie Dixon); If You Ever Go To Houston (Bob
Dylan/Robert Hunter); Forgetful Heart (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter); Jolene
      (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter); This
Dream Of You (Bob Dylan), Shake Shake Mama (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter); I Feel A Change Coming
On (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter); It's All Good (Bob Dylan/Robert Hunter).
The album is produced by Jack Frost (Bob's pseudonym). Musicians include
members of his touring band, Mike Campbell from
The Heartbreakers and David Hidalgo from Los Lobos on
accordion. My Wife's Home Town is apparently a rewrite of Willie Dixon's
I Just Want To Make Love To You and Willie is credited. Beyond Here
Lies Nothin' is said to be based on All Your Love by Otis Rush.
All the songs except My Wife's Home Town and This Dream Of You have been written in association with
Robert Hunter, the Grateful Dead lyricist who collaborated with Bob in the
1980s with Silvio and The Ugliest Girl In The World, both from Down In
      The Groove.
The first single was Beyond Here Lies Nothin', followed
by a radio edit of I Feel A Change Coming On.

This 2LP set comes in white card sleeves. The records
have United Record Pressing (URP) Test Pressing labels with what looks like handwritten text
(Gerd Rundel says that the handwritten text looks as if it's printed, so could
be in a handwriting typeface). Concerns were expressed about the authenticity of
this item when it was for sale on eBay. Gerd was determined to prove this set is
authentic and contacted both the seller and URP in Nashville. The seller says: "Sony moved their headquarters from
550 Madison Ave. to 11 Madison Ave. around 2014. I was helping with demolition
for the old headquarters at 550 Madison, and found these records left behind in
one of the offices after they moved out. There were a lot of great records and
memorabilia left behind. Sony Music includes Epic Records, Columbia Records, and
RCA records. I can't remember which floor it exactly was where I found them." The seller lives and works in New York City as a
Building Services Engineer. Sony did indeed move their headquarters in Madison
Avenue from 2014 onwards.
URP say: "This does look like a test pressing we would have
done.
As you get older, you’ll realize that a $300 watch
and a $30 watch both tell the same time.
A Michael Kors wallet and a Forever 21 wallet hold the same amount of money.
A Ford will also drive you as far as a Bentley.
True happiness is not found in materialistic things, it comes from the love and
laughter found in each other.
Stay humble… Live simply, Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the
rest to God."

Gerd has found a URP test pressing by The Dead Weather
from Mar 2009 with similar labels. He
says the test pressing matrix numbers are the same as those of
his commercial Together Through Life release listed below, including their visual appearance, handwritten, stamped
"STERLING", etc.

The records of
the copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 8869-7-43893-1A, Side 2 - 8869-7-43893-1B,
Side 3 - 8869-7-43893-1C, Side 4 - 8869-7-43893-1D. All four sides of this copy
also have “STERLING” stamped in the vinyl as well as "RJ" handwritten (mastered
by Ray Janos, Sterling Sound, New York).
Thanks to Anke and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.
"Together Through Life" - 180gm stereo vinyl 2LP set, Columbia
88697-43893-1 (USA), 28 Apr 2009; Sony Music/Columbia 88697-43893-1 (Europe), 27
Apr 2009:
The sleeve of the US vinyl release has slight differences from the European release,
although the record labels look identical (allowing for scanning differences). The
front sticker has identical text but the lines separating the text elements
are correctly positioned whereas on the European sticker they appear to have
been printed too high. On the rear sleeve there is no "Sony Music" text and
logo near to the bar code at lower right, and the bar code number has
hyphens, while the European bar code doesn't. As well as a commercial copy, Gerd Rundel has a sealed promo
copy with a white promotional sticker with blue text on the rear of the
    sleeve.
As for the test
pressing above, all
four sides of the US album have “STERLING” stamped and "RJ" handwritten in the vinyl
plus handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 8869-7-43893-1A, Side 2 - 8869-7-43893-1B,
Side 3 - 8869-7-43893-1C, Side 4 - 8869-7-43893-1D.
Both the US and the European
releases are available in Australia as imports.
Thanks to Fred Muller,
Anke and Gerd Rundel and Peter
    Lindberg for information and scans.

The three-disc Deluxe Edition is in a stiff card
    slipcase,
not in a corduroy box as originally reported.
The CD itself is in a jewel case, and is identical to that of the Standard
Edition except for the catalogue numbers on the inserts and disc. The bonus discs with the Deluxe Edition include the "Friends & Neighbors"
show from Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour and a DVD with "The Lost
Interview" by Roy Silver including the original Witmark demo of Blowin'
In The Wind (R-0776, see 2007). Thanks to Paul
Tillman for pointing out that even though R-0776 is listed on the DVD menu
(see below), it cannot actually be selected (it's part of the Roy Silver
interview running from 7:37 to 10:07). R-0776 was also released in Oct 2010
on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964. This
means it's no longer a rarity.

Gerd Rundel's copy was bought in Germany and has two
stickers on the front of the slipcase. There is no "E" ("Exempt") on the rear of
slipcase and also a different barcode. The slipcase and the DVD have a different
catalogue number - Sony Music/Columbia 88697521902. One front sticker and the DVD have "FSK ab 0 freigegeben"
instead of "E" on the right of the centre hole (the meaning of "FSK ab 0
freigegeben" is that the DVD has harmless content and is open for all ages).
Roland Born's copy has this "FSK"/"0" sticker only.

    scan by Ian Woodward |

Ian Woodward has a promo CD-R in a slim-line CD case with an insert dated
"4/3/2009" (presumably 3 Apr 2009). The disc itself is a CD-R rather than
glass-mastered. It is a gold CD-R and the scanner had difficulty rendering it
properly. " SONY
BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT"
is printed across the top of the disc and, in an arc at the bottom of
the central area, is "Premium Quality CD-R from Sony DADC". The
standard compact disc logo is right of the centre hole. To the left of the
centre hole was text about this being a promo disc, not for re-sale, removed
because it will identify the source.
The artist and album
title are written on the disc in black marker pen.
The paper insert has a
warning about the disc being identifiable.

The promo CD-R from Ian Woodward gives the dates of both the standard
and deluxe Japanese releases.
Wil Gielen has a copy of the same CD-R in a CD single jewel case without
an insert but with a front sticker dated "4/27/2009" (27 Apr 2009).
The Japanese text says the album is not be broadcast on radio or television,
etc., before that date. Wil's promo
CD-R came with a seven page press release in Japanese. The promo CD-R found by Hervé from France is dated "2009/4/27" (also 27 Apr
2009).

Gerd Rundel has a promo copy of the
commercial release with a yellow numbered sticker (number obscured) on the rear and "SAMPLE
LOANED" in the centre of the CD.

        The booklet for
the commercial release of this edition has 22 pages

with liner
notes, the song lyrics in English and Japanese, plus ads for the four recently
remastered Dylan albums. There is also a leaflet (printed one-side only) with
writing in Japanese (same as with SICP-2235 above). For Sony Music SICP 30587,
the 2014 remasterd Blu-spec CD2 release, see below.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol.
One" - 47CD boxed
set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; USB stick,
Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album
Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke
Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card
sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set
of previously released non-album tracks entitled
Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and
The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album,
also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set
Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
    Jackson (Acoustic version),
R-0085, see
    1971. The set is
    therefore listed in 2013.
The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and
    previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker
card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.

The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK39"
plus "DISC 43". The CDs are different in detail, the US
Together Through Life CD has
catalogue number "88691924312D43", whereas
the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-43". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria).
For more
    details of the set, see
