Modern Times
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. Two out-takes have been officially released: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs (2008): Ain't Talkin' (alternate take); Someday Baby (alternate take) |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 07 January, 2024.
Tracklisting: Thunder On The Mountain; Spirit On The Water; Rollin' And Tumblin'; When The Deal Goes Down; Someday Baby; Workingman's Blues #2; Beyond The Horizon; Nettie Moore; The Levee's Gonna Break; Ain't Talkin'.
Bonus DVD: Blood In My Eyes (Promo Video, 1993), Love Sick (Live "Grammy®" Version, 1998, with gatecrasher "Soy Bomb" edited out); Things Have Changed ("Wonder Boys" Promo Video, 2000); Cold Irons Bound ("Masked And Anonymous" version, 2002). The Apple iTunes Online Music Store in the USA is offering a bonus of these four performances. In Europe only the Things Have Changed video was offered. The 1983 Jokerman video was offered for pre-sales in both the USA and Europe, but is no longer available.
It's worth mentioning that three songs are not actually Dylan originals, his copyright credits are claimed probably for revised lyrics/new arrangements. Rolling and Tumblin' was first recorded as "Roll And Tumble Blues" by Hambone Willie Newbern in 1929 and also as Rollin' And Tumblin' by McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) in 1950. The Levee's Gonna Break was recorded in 1929 as "When The Levee Breaks" by Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie, while Someday Baby was recorded in 1935 as "Someday Baby Blues" by Sleepy John Estes and also as "Worried Life Blues" by Big Maceo Merriweather. McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) recorded his version of this song as "Trouble No More", the title of Bob's Gospel Years Bootleg Series release, Nov 2017.
Thanks to Graeme Jennings, Jean-Pol Hiernaux and Sonny Boy McFitzson for information.

Columbia 8 2876894942 9 (USA) - Limited Edition long box edition front scan by Hans Seegers |
Because this Limited Edition contains rarities, it is also listed in 2006. This release (but not the Standard Edition) was also available in the USA in a long box. The US CD and DVD both have the FBI anti-piracy logo, missing from the European and Australian releases. The book-style pack with the CDs has a catalogue number of "82876 87686-2", the CD has catalogue number "82876 87606-2" (as shown in the detail scans) and the DVD has catalogue number CVD 94958. Jack from Canada's copy of the Limited Edition has a different front sticker from the one on Hans' long box, including the catalogue number "82876 87686 2-S1" (same as the book-style pack). |

The European DVD has a green German age rating logo (12 upwards). Thanks to Hans Seegers for the scans of the US long box edition and a copy sold in France. The US long box format was for the Limited Edition with DVD only, not the single CD version. Thanks also to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding the Sony BMG Taiwanese Limited Edition on eil.com.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Jack from Canada and the late David Plentus for information and scans.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding a
picture of the Japanese Limited Edition on eBay. It has a wraparound obi, a
Japanese lyrics booklet and an insert in Japanese describing the DVD. I have
since purchased a commercial copy, and Wil Gielen has provided scans of a
promo copy with a yellow numbered promo sticker on the rear of the
wraparound obi and "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centres of the CD and DVD.
The obi price is ¥3,150 (¥3,000
+ sales tax) and unusually there is no withdrawal date on the obi. Because this Limited Edition contains rarities, it is also listed in 2006. |

Regular CD Releases
"Modern Times" - promo CD-R, Columbia 82876 87606 2 (USA), 11 Aug 2006:
"Modern Times" - promo CD-R, Sony BMG (no catalogue number) (Colombia), Aug 2006(?):
CD-R found by Gerd Rundel |
This "mega
rare" promo CD-R purporting to be from Colombia is almost certainly a fake,
so is listed in Questionable Recordings. Modern Times is from 2006, yet this is dated 2002! Sony & BMG did not merge until 2004, two years after this date. ABKCO records are distributed by Universal, and Bob has never had links to that company. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding this on eBay. |
"Modern Times" - CD releases, Columbia 82876 87606 2 (USA/Canada), 29 Aug 2006:
Jean-Pol Hiernaux and Gerd Rundel have copies of the album purchased at "Best Buy" in the USA, where a 100-page booklet is being given away with the album (not the same as the PDF booklet with The Bob Dylan Collection from iTunes, see Online Performances (Other) ). The Best Buy booklet is CD-sized and includes the 50 official albums presented in reverse chronological order, with two pages per album showing the cover and tracklist. This copy also has an insert advertising Bob's "Theme Time" XM radio show, see 2006. Pachi Becerril has a promo copy with a sticker with text "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY NOT FOR SALE" on the front. The "Best Buy" release has the catalogue number 82876 89494 2 on the "Best Buy" front sticker while the round yellow sticker and the CD itself have the regular catalogue number 82876 87606 2. Moise Potié's copy again has the regular catalogue number on the CD but 82876 87686 2 on the spines (same as the Taiwanese Limited Edition 2 disc set release above).
Thanks to Jack from Canada for scans of the Canadian release. The front of the US release has a slight coloured tint to the photo, whereas the Canadian photo is true black and white. The rear of the Canadian release is missing the US FBI Anti-Piracy logo. Detailed differences on the CD itself are shown above.
Thanks to Tim Dunn and Stuart Sonshine for information about this album and to David Plentus, Jean-Pol Hiernaux, Jack from Canada and Gerd Rundel for scans.
"Modern Times" - promo and commercial CD releases, Columbia/Sony BMG 82876 87606-2 (Austria for Europe), 28 Aug 2006 (25 Aug 2006 in some countries); Columbia/Sony Music 82876 87606-2 (Austria for Europe), 2009:

insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (2006 release)
Columbia/Sony Music 82876 87606-2 (Austria for Europe) - detail of rear
insert, scan by Billy Bolley (2009 release)
Thanks to Ronald Born for the scan of the European promo CD, which has no catalogue number or custom sleeve. It has the text "for promotional use only" on the CD itself.
Billy Bolley's commercial copy dates from after 2009, as it has the new Sony Music logo on both inserts and the CD, instead of Sony BMG.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Manuel García Jara and Billy Bolley for scans of European commercial CD releases.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding the Sony BMG Taiwanese Standard Edition on eil.com. Thanks to Wil Gielen for scans of a sealed promo copy of the Japanese release. The commercial obi price is ¥2,520 (¥2,400 plus sales tax) and the withdrawal date is 28 Feb 2007.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans. Thanks to Wiebke Dittmer for finding a copy on eBay of this picture CD in a promo wallet without an insert and a "NOT FOR SALE" sticker on the wallet.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol. One" - 47CD boxed set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; USB stick, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK38" plus "DISC 42". The CDs are different in detail, the US Modern Times CD has catalogue number "88691924312D42", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-42". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for these CDs.
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
