Original US stereo album, Columbia OC 40439 (LP), OCT 40439 (MC), 14 Jul 1986. Tracklist: Side 1: You Wanna Ramble (Herman Parker Jr.); They
Killed Him (Kris Kristofferson); Driftin’ Too Far From Shore; Precious Memories
(J. B. F. Wright). Bob revealed in an interview that the album title comes from a blues song called Junco Partner, recorded by James Booker, and also by The Clash on their Sandinista album.
An interesting point about the front sleeve is that, although the Gregory Peck Western film mentioned in the lyrics of Brownsville Girl is "The Gunfighter" (20th Century Fox, 1950), directed by Henry King, Rod MacBeath, in his article called "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves Part 5" in "The Telegraph 54" suggested that the illustration believed to be by Charles Sappington was of a scene from a different Gregory Peck western. This is "Duel In The Sun" (MGM, 1946), directed by King Vidor, which also starred Jennifer Jones. This is now known to be incorrect. "The Gunfighter" was filmed in black-and-white, whilst "Duel In The Sun" was in Technicolor. The scene from "The Gunfighter" above right shows Gregory Peck as Jimmy Ringo, who's just been forced to kill a young punk who challenged him, as in the song lyrics. Thanks to Steve Perrin for information that "The Gunfighter" was released on Blu-ray by Criterion in the USA on 20 Oct 2020. , Charles Sappington said:
Q: Did you create the image for the album cover? Or just the design?
A: I created the package. However, the deal was at the time … I promised them I wouldn’t talk about it. There was a reason, and it was legal. They had some legal problems with that cover. I suspect enough time has passed, but I have to stick to my word unless I get approval from the Dylan camp. (Note: Dylan’s camp had no comment.) What I can say is that Bob Dylan supplied the original image and then we distorted it from there.
Q: Did you have much interaction with Dylan on the cover?
A: They originally had a photographer shoot some photos of Dylan and Tom Petty. I heard Dylan took a look and threw them all in the trash. The only thing he liked from the shoot was a Polaroid test shot, which is the first thing they gave me. I fiddled with that, but they didn’t care for it, and we went in a different direction. That’s the part I can’t talk about. But on the inside there were the thank-yous …
Q: There were a ton of thank-yous …
A: Yes, but it didn’t start out that long. It was about 20 names. Bob told me he didn’t want it in this typeset. He wanted it hand-lettered but not calligraphy. I knew exactly what to do. I turned it over to my now ex-wife. She was at UCLA in a landscape architecture program. She was into lettering on drawings, which I thought would be perfect. I sent Bob a sample, and he liked it. But every morning he called with new names to add to the list. The morning it had to go to press he called with five more names. My wife was headed out the door to go to her job, and I said, “Wait, you have to do this before you leave.” She sat down and did it.

However, "Isis" #175 (August 2014) includes Internet reports from
Scott Warmuth and Fred Bals that the picture has nothing to do with "Duel In
The Sun"! It originally appeared on the front of the American pulp magazine
"Spicy-Adventure Stories" for Jan 1939. The artwork is by Harry Lemon Parkhurst
and illustrates a story called "Daughters of Doom", written by E. Hoffmann
Price. This explains Sappington's later comments "They
had some legal problems with that cover"
and "Bob
Dylan supplied the original image".

Lee Shain tells the story of how Bob picked up this pulp cover for his album
in her book "Seeing the Real You at Last: Life and Love on the Road with Bob
Dylan". Harry Lemon Parkhurst (1876-1962) was a very prolific illustrator for more than 50 years of pulp magazines and comics, especially for "Spicy-Adventure Stories" as shown left and right. Edgar Hoffmann Price (1898-1988) was an equally prolific writer of stories for pulp magazines, best known for his contributions to the fantasy magazine "Weird Tales", where he collaborated with H. P. Lovecraft. He also used other names such as Clark Nelson and Walter Cook. |

Thanks to Dag Braathen for a completely different possible title and cover for this album! "This is a concept design for a Bob Dylan album cover. After being approached by Dylan's management to develop the cover art, Rick Griffin listened to the music scheduled for the album and created an emotionally intense vision, contrasting the dark blue, rebellious cool of Marlon Brando in the 1953 film, "The Wild One", with the passionate red of the title lettering. Rick was "jacked up" at that period, having just bought a new Harley Davidson motorcycle, so an autobiographical reference element can be seen in the image. The album eventually came out with the title Knocked Out Loaded in July 1986. Rick worked on several Dylan projects through the 1980s." |

The Knocked Out Loaded version of Brownsville Girl appears on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. III, but now been superseded by an alternate mix that first appeared on the 2007 Columbia/Legacy compilation Dylan and again on the US Columbia/Legacy compilations Playlist: The Very Best Of Bob Dylan '70s (2010) and The Real... Gerd Rundel's sealed copy has a front sticker promoting "The New Bob Dylan Album". The spine has catalogue number "OC 40439". The record has red Columbia labels with a catalogue number of just "C 40439", the Columbia logos in a ring round the circumference and a picture inner sleeve. The front of the inner sleeve has musician credits superimposed over a live picture of Bob on stage in Australia in Feb 1986 with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The rear of the inner sleeve has a long list of credits superimposed over a picture of an as yet unidentified woman - maybe one of Bob's backing singers? Bob is now known to have married backing singer Carolyn Dennis on 4 Jun 1986, so it may be her. Jeremy Mayle has a copy with a gold embossed promo stamp over the barcode on the rear sleeve. |

Europe have black ring-shaped stickers covering the ring of "Columbia"
logos. There are no alterations on the front or rear sleeve and the record

The US promo cassette release of Knocked Out Loaded has a red insert which is blank on the reverse. The cassette is transparent with white paper labels and black text. The cassette and insert have only catalogue number “40439” while the commercial release has “OCT 40439”. Got My Mind Made Up is wrongly titled "I've Got My Mind Made Up" on the cassette insert and Side 2 of the cassette. |

The commercial cassette release has a folded insert with the tracklist and musician credits on the reverse. The cassette is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. Got My Mind Made Up is again wrongly titled "I've Got My Mind Made Up" on both sides of the cassette insert and Side 2 of the cassette.

The sleeves of both the UK and Irish releases were made in England by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd. and have a barcode at rear top right. The records come in a printed inner sleeve with two fold-over flaps on the rear. Like the European release of Biograph in 1985, the record has red CBS labels. "MADE IN ENGLAND" is in the circumference text and CBS copyright information at the bottom. I have two UK copies which are identical except that the black variable text on the Side 1 record label of one copy is missing, although the record plays the correct tracks. The copies of both English records shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 86326-A1, Side 2 - CBS 86326-B1. The Irish record also has red CBS labels, with a completely different layout, without "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text, "Record mfd. in Ireland" below the writer credits, but with CBS copyright information again at the bottom. The copy of the Irish record shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-86326-A, Side 2 - CBS-86326-B. |

These Columbia releases were again made in England. They have the same three-fold front insert as the 1980s cassette release, but the cassettes have the Columbia logo. This time the cassette is grey with black text printed directly onto it, there are no paper labels. The second release has exactly the same insert but the cassette is smoked transparent grey with white text.

This cassette dated 1986 has a wide three-fold insert with musicians’ info for all tracks. There’s also the CBS logo and a barcode. The cassette itself is black with dark red CBS paper labels with "Chrome EQ 120m Sec", "CBS Inc Made in Holland" above the centre window. ger Hemel has a sealed copy with a promo sticker on the rear of the case. Note the Australian 1990 release CBS 467040 4 below was manufactured in Holland! It has a very similar insert layout and a very similar cassette: the Australian cassette has "BIEM/STEMRA" and "Made in Holland", this Dutch release has only "BIEM/STEMRA" at bottom left. Also, this has the original catalogue number, but the Australian cassette has the new late 1980s/early 1990s catalogue number. |

S.A. The record shown was also made in Spain. It has red CBS labels and
matrix numbers: Side 1 - 86326-A, Side 2 - 86326-B. Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans. William Henry Prince has a copy with a record store sticker of "Manzana Discos [Apple Records]". Manuel says there were once record stores with this name in many Spanish cities, inspired by the Beatles' record company, but almost all independent record stores in Spain have now disappeared. |

This 1990s release is on the CBS/Sony label after every "CBS" worldwide company except Discos CBS Spain changed to "Columbia". This copy has a hole punched through the sleeve clipping the barcode on the rear, which probably means it's a promo. The record has a new catalogue number and red CBS/Sony labels. release was made in Portugal. The record has red CBS record labels with
"SPA" (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores)
to the right of the centre hole. The
record of Lars' commercial copy
shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-86326-A (stamped) H P PORTUGAL (handwritten),
Side 2 - 01-86326-B (stamped) PBL 40439 (handwritten). Simon Blokker has a promo copy with a DJ sticker on the front sleeve. The rear sleeve has a CBS promo stamp at bottom left. The rear sleeve differs from that of Lars' commercial copy because it has "049" in a circle at top right below the CBS logo, whereas Lars' copy has "051". The record is the same as that of Lars' commercial copy. Simon also has a commercial copy with "049" at rear top right so there are actually two commercial rear sleeve variants. |

The second release has a front image with much better colour than that of the first release. The second cassette is now transparent grey instead of black, although the pink CBS/Suzy paper labels look identical.

This album was made in Israel. The front sleeve has the catalogue number at top left and white Hebrew text below "BOB DYLAN" meaning "New Album!". The rear sleeve has a yellow panel with text in Hebrew and English. The record has red CBS labels. There is an insert with text in Hebrew. Thanks to Larry Yudelson for the information that the insert is not Bob-related, but is instead promoting Tel Aviv-based Israeli singer Tammy Leviav, photo above. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-40439-1B (handwritten) 86326-AQ (stamped), Side 2 - PBL-40439-1A (handwritten) 86326-BQ (stamped).

This (unauthorised?) cassette was released by El
Dawlia in Egypt and shown as under license from CBS Records International.
It has no catalogue number and the inside of the cassette insert is plain
white. It has a "CBS" logo on the insert and the "Epic" logo on both sides
of the cassette. On Side 1 They Killed Him is misspelled as "They Kinlled
Him" and Precious Memories is misspelled as "Predious Memories" on both the

The promo record labels have the usual Japanese characters indicating a promo to the right of the centre hole above the catalogue number. The record of Manuel García Jara's promo copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - "28AP-3224A1 1A1 @CS", Side 2: "28AP-3224B1". Hans Seegers has a promo copy with a sample sticker on the rear sleeve as illustrated. The record has red labels with promo stamps, and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - "28AP-3224A2 1A1 @ CS", Side 2 - "28AP-3224B1 1A4" (different from those of Manuel's promo copy).
The commercial release of this album has a yellow top obi with black test and price ¥2,800 (the "28" in the catalogue number indicates the price). Both the promo and the commercial copies have a double sided insert with Japanese text on one side and Dylan discography on the other and a second folded four page insert in English and Japanese, the front and rear of which are the inner sleeve designs used elsewhere.
This appears to have been the last Bob Dylan album released on vinyl in Japan. Even today with the resurgence of vinyl, LP releases sold in Japan are imported from the USA or Europe.

The original 1986 release, CBS PC 8191, has a single-fold front insert
and a white cassette with blue text printed directly on to the case, there
are no paper labels. It was re-released with the same insert but with a
transparent grey cassette with ridges and with white text printed directly
on to the case, there are again no paper labels. This ridged design is the
same as other Australian cassettes from 1989. The 1990 release, CBS 467040 4, has a wider two-fold front insert and a black cassette with red CBS labels. CBS became Columbia in 1991, so this dates from before then. Thanks to Pierre van der Pol for pointing out that this cassette was made in Holland! As far as I can see, this New Zealand release has the same
sleeve and inner sleeve as the Australian release above. There is no country
of origin on the sleeves, but the record was made in New Zealand. This was
the last Dylan album where the record was pressed in New Zealand itself,

As usual for the Philippines, the titles of four tracks have been added to the front sleeve, this time in white below "BOB DYLAN". The front sleeve also has the catalogue number in very small text at bottom left. The rear sleeve has credits printed on the left edge. This album can be seen to have been a sample because it has a punched hole at top right of the front sleeve and a promo sticker that covered the barcode has been partly removed on the rear sleeve. South African releases were originally made by The Gramophone Company (Pty) Ltd, part of the EMI group (bought by Universal in 2012), with sleeves printed by Interpak while Rhodesian albums were made also by The Gramophone Company but printed by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. In 1983, Infidels was made in South Africa by the same company but the sleeve was printed by Artone Press, while in Rhodesia the sleeve was printed by Belmont Printers. In 1986, Knocked Out Loaded was made in South Africa by another company, Gallo GRC and printed by Artone Press, again with orange/yellow CBS labels. This was the first album made by Gallo/GRC. It has a standard front; the rear sleeve has a CBS logo and a barcode. This is one of a few albums with the tracklist printed on the rear. It has the standard picture inner sleeve. The record of the copy shown has orange/yellow CBS labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF-3114-A, Side 2 - ASF-3114-B. |

Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for sleeves they printed for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record companies. |

Lars M. Banke has a copy of this record in a ZMC (Zimbabwe Music Corporation) sleeve. The ZMC sleeve is the same on both sides. ZMC made the subsequent Zimbabwe releases up to Under The Red Sky in 1990. There are no promo stamps on the record labels and they are exactly as shown for the commercial release. The record of this copy has the same handwritten matrix numbers as the commercial copy.

The picture from www.eil.com also has a purple/white sticker on the album sleeve which looks like a record shop label and isn't present on my copy. The record comes in the US inner sleeve with differences as shown. has red/yellow labels with written matrix numbers: Side 1 - 0211-17009-1A, Side 2 -0211-17008-1B.
The song titles are translated into Spanish on the cover and on the labels. You Wanna Ramble and Under Your Spell are translated here as "Quieres Pasear" and "Hechizado" while in Costa Rica they were translated as "Quieres Aventurar" and "Bajo Tu Hechizo" (see US & International 7" & 12" Stereo Singles & EPs 1984-86). Others are "Ellos Lo Mataron" [They Killed Him]; "A La Deriva Lejos De la Playa" [Driftin' Too Far from Shore]; Preciosos Recuerdos [Precious Memories]; "Quiza Agun Dia" [Maybe Someday]; "La Chica De Brownsville" [Brownsville Girl]; "Estoy Recuperado" [Got My Mind Made Up]. Lars M. Banke has noticed that on the rear sleeve and on the Side 1 label They Killed Him is incorrectly listed as “They Kill Him”.

This release was made in Brazil. The first copy shown is a promo, with a gold embossed promo stamp on the rear sleeve with text "AMOSTRA INVENDÁVEL [SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE]" and a promo insert in Portuguese. There is a double-sided insert with the designs from the inner sleeve of other releases above and “EC 138685” printed at front top right.. The record has orange/yellow Discos CBS labels with song titles in English and Portuguese. |

The promo copy of this album has a prominent slanted red stamp on the front sleeve with the words "Disco Para Demostracion - Venda Prohibita" [Demonstration Disc - Not For Sale". These words are also printed on the record labels on either side of the CBS logo above the "Discos CBS" text. The song titles are translated into Spanish on the rear sleeve and record labels. All are good translations (says Sergio Magnacca) except "Got My Mind Made Up" which is clumsily translated as "Cambie Mi Forma De Pensar" which means "Changed My Way Of Thinking" (surprisingly similar to the title from Slow Train Coming). You Wanna Ramble is also translated here as "Quieres Pasear" (see the entry for Mexico above). The record has orange/yellow Discos CBS labels and this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 40.439, Side 2 -BL 40.439. Surprisingly, the front sleeve has the Columbia logo at bottom right.
The commercial version has the same front and rear sleeve without the red promo stamp. The orange/yellow Discos CBS labels are the same, again without the promo text, and the record of this copy has the same stamped matrix numbers as the promo copy, but also has “© 6” stamped on both sides.

The stereo LP release was on the Discos CBS label, but this cassette release is on Columbia. The insert is blank on the reverse and has song titles in Spanish and English with the same translations as the LP. The cassette is white with orange text, there are no paper labels. The song titles are in Spanish only. |

These extremely rare stereo cassette releases were made in Chile by CBS Records Chile Ltda. The inserts of both releases shown look identical apart from the second release insert appears to have been printed in stronger colours. The song titles on the cassette insert and labels are in English only. The first release cassette is light grey with white CBS labels and orange text. The second release cassette is again light grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels.

This very rare release is unusual in that it has the song titles (in English) on the rear sleeve. The sleeve and record were made in Costa Rica by Indica S.A. (Industria de Discos Centroamericano) and distributed throughout Central America. The rear sleeve has a barcode at top right. First release: CBS/Sony 32DP 499, 21 Sep 1986: This release has a orange and white obi with black and red panels with black, white and dark red text and price ¥3,200 (this was before sale tax was introduced in Japan- the "32" in the catalogue number indicates the price). The front insert is a 24-page stapled booklet.
Second release: CBS/Sony 32DP 499, 1989: This release is the same as the first release with the orange and white obi, this time with price ¥3,008 (¥2,920 plus sales tax).
Third release (mid-price): Sony Records SRCS 6341, 22 Sep 1993: This release has a black, red, white, blue and yellow obi with price ¥1,800 (¥1,748 plus sale tax). The release date is "93-9-22" (23 Sep 1993) and the withdrawal date is "95-9-21" (21 Sep 1995). The original Japanese release date is shown as "84-8-24" (24 Aug 1984). The copy shown is a promo, with a numbered promo sticker on the rear insert over the barcode, and Japanese characters indicating a sample in the clear centre of the CD.

Gerd Rundel's later CBS release came in a red CD tray, again with an eight-page booklet as the front insert. The rear insert has "CBS" at top right and different copyright text at the bottom. The CD was now made in Austria with red panels. It has an unusual CBS catalogue number "467040 2" to the right of the centre hole, the expected "CDCBS" prefix is missing.

My 1990s Columbia copy comes in a black CD tray and again has an eight-page booklet as the front insert. The Columbia CD was again made in Austria with a slightly different design and has also catalogue number "467040 2" to the right of the centre hole. As far as I know this release is still on sale today. |

was made in Australia by Disctronics Limited. The Columbia release is still on sale in Australia. The CD was made in Australia and is red with silver and black text. The inserts were printed in Holland! Paul Shenton's copy has a 1991 "Dylan Originals" sticker on the front of the jewel case. |

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK28" plus "DISC 32". This album has been remastered, so is the tenth Dylan album remastered for this project. Thanks to Georg Thoma for reminding me that the version of Brownsville Girl on the 2007 3CD compilation Dylan is a different mix from that of the original 1986 album and that mix appears again on the 2010 US Columbia/Legacy compilation Playlist: The Very Best Of Bob Dylan '70s, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 2010s. This CD has a remastered version of the original 1986 mix. The CDs are different in detail, the US Knocked Out Loaded CD has catalogue number "88691924312D32", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-32". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1980s albums from Saved to Oh Mercy will be released in Japan on 27 Aug 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30571 to SICP 30579. The 2013 remastered Knocked Out Loaded is SICP 30576, more details will be added when available. |
