Real Live
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Vinyl and Tape Releases
"Real Live" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Columbia FC 39944 (USA), 30 Nov 1984:
Gerd Rundel has a copy whose front sleeve has an advertising sticker from Columbia promoting the live tracks and guest artists plus a record store sticker with price $8.33. This copy has "Bob Dylan" above the album title. Stuart Moore's promo copy has a gold stamp on the rear sleeve. The record has red Columbia labels with the yellow Columbia logo in a ring round the outside. Simon Blokker has a US promo copy of 'Real Live' (FC 39944) with 'Bob Dylan' in white over the title on the front sleeve (unlike Dave Plentus' commercial release). The right hand corner of the rear sleeve has a promo stamp that's different from the one shown by the scan from Stuart Moore. Above the "FOR PROMOTION ONLY" stamp there's another stamp that looks as if it shows "0000". The rear sleeve is the same as the US commercial release. The inner sleeve is not folded-over, but pasted on two sides. The record has red Columbia labels with the yellow Columbia logos in a ring round the outside, printed in the U.S.A., as shown. The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - P (A) PAL 39944 1K (handwritten) plus "TML-M" stamped in very small text on the opposite side of the vinyl, Side 2 - P (handwritten) TML-S (stamped) PBL 39944 1C (handwritten). The "TML-S" is again stamped in very small text, but is now not on the opposite side of the Side 2 vinyl but between the "P" and the "PBL ......".
The record of Gerd Rundel's copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 39944 1J, Side 2 - PBL 39944 1N. Like Gerd Rundel's copy, Sergio Mariano Romay from Argentina has a copy of Columbia FC 39944 which has "Bob Dylan" over the album title like the Canadian and other worldwide releases below. The record of Sergio's copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 39944-1M and Side 2 - PBL 39944-1K.

CBS 26334 (UK) - front (my copy) |
The front sleeve has "Bob Dylan" over the album title, omitted on US sleeves. The sleeve was made in England by Shorewood Packaging Company. The copy signed by Bob in silver pen is from Fraser's Autograph's (no connection!). The front of the picture inner sleeve has flaps folded-over the rear, so that there is a black edge on both sides of the rear of the inner sleeve. The record itself was made in England and my copy has orange/yellow CBS labels with "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text, CBS copyright info at the bottom of the labels, and the "LC|0149" capsule at high top right. My record has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 26334 A2, Side 2 - CBS 26334 B2. |

Lars M. Banke has a copy in the same sleeve and inner sleeve where the printing on the Side 1 label is misaligned. The Side 2 label is as shown. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS 26334 A 2, Side 2 - CBS 26334 B2.
Thanks to Lars M. Banke for information and scan.
"Real Live" - stereo cassette release, CBS 40-26334 (UK), 29 Nov 1984:
This release has a single folded card as the insert. The cassette is black with orange/yellow CBS labels using the record label design, a white CBS logo and printed text in black. It has Dolby noise reduction.
Thanks to Tom Willems for information and scans.
"Real Live" - stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS 26334 (NL), Nov 1984; Columbia 467841 1 (NL), 1991:
Tom Willems has two copies of CBS 26334, one the same as Gerd's but with a gold promo stamp on the rear sleeve with text "FOR PROMOTION ONLY/ NOT FOR SALE/ CBS RECORDS, SWEDEN". The second is the same but for the text "cassette" and a cassette symbol on the rear sleeve below "CB|311" and "58" in a circle.
The 1990s release is now on the Columbia label with a new catalogue number, Columbia 467841 1. The front sleeve has a "NICE PRICE”/“DYLAN ORIGINALS"/"30 YEARS ON COLUMBIA" sticker. It comes with a double-sided “DYLAN ORIGINALS NICE PRICE” 12" insert and the same printed inner sleeve as the 1984 release. There is a barcode at top right of the rear sleeve. The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-26334-4A-1 (stamped), 02-467841-20 4A1 (handwritten), Side 2 - 01-26334-3B-1 (stamped), 02-467841-20 3B1 (handwritten).
Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Tom Willems for information and scans.
"Real Live" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40-26334 (NL), Dec 1984; Columbia 467841 4 (NL), 1990s:
The 1984 cassette release has a folded card insert with the tracklisting on the inside. The cassette is light grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels.
The 1990s release is on the Columbia label and has the new catalogue number "467841 4". The shorter folded insert omits the rear photo but again has the tracklist on the inside. It has a barcode and is dated 1984. The spine has a "Chrome Tape" logo. The cassette is black with dark red paper labels, and has "Made in Holland".
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Pierre van der Pol for information and scans.
"Real Live" - stereo vinyl LP release, CBS 26334 (Italy), Dec 1984:
Real Live was probably the last Dylan album to be released in Italy. The only other Italian albums released after 1984 that have been found so far were records with red CBS labels like Blood On The Tracks in the "Il Rock" series or Bob Dylan At Budokan, which is again possibly part of another series.
The record comes in the standard sleeve. The inner sleeve looks to have the same front and rear as the Dutch sleeve, with a black folded-over flap on the rear (the UK front). The record of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - C1 26334-1L-27-11-84, Side 2 - C1 26334-2L-27-11-84 (27 Nov 1984 is presumably the mastering date).
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Real
Live" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, CBS S 26334 (Spain), Dec 1984,
re-released late 1980s:
Slow Train Coming,
Saved,
Infidels
and Real Live
are the only Dylan albums from Spain where promo copies were released with white
labels.
Manuel García Jara has a promo copy with the commercial sleeve with two cut-off corners. The record for this copy was made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A. and has white CBS promo labels. The commercial record was also made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A. and has orange/yellow CBS labels. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL 39944 1M, Side 2 - PBL 39944 1AA.
The late 1980s release comes in the same sleeve (with the Paseo de la Castellana Madrid address) and inner sleeve as the 1984 release but this time the record has red CBS labels and was made in Spain by Tecnodisco S.A., Madrid, instead of Discos CBS S.A. The record of the copy shown has very hard to read stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 26334 4 O, Side 2 - 26334 3 O.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Lars M. Banke for information and scans. Arie de Reus also sent in scans of the promo labels, for which thanks (my fault in missing that I already had them ready to add).

On Side 2 track 5 was initially mistitled "TOMBSTONES BLUES" but this was subsequently corrected. Thanks to Gerd Rundel for spotting that track 3 on Side 1 is mistitled "1 AND 1" instead of "I AND I" (compare the "I"s in the other song titles).
Thanks to Arie de Reus and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
"Real Live" - stereo vinyl LP release, CBS DNW 3044 (South Africa), 1984:

"Real Live" - stereo vinyl LP release, CBS CLS-5823 (Mexico), 1985:

"Contains eight classic songs
NEVER BEFORE RECORDED LIVE
With the participation of
CARLOS SANTANA, MICK TAYLOR and GLYN JOHNS"
The rear sleeve has text translated into Spanish, with song titles in Spanish and English. The album is copyrighted 1985 in Mexico. The record is in a transparent plastic sleeve and has orange/yellow CBS labels with song titles again in Spanish and English, and written matrix numbers: Side 1 - 02-11-16316-1B, Side 2 - 02-11-16317-1B. Highway 61 Revisited is here translated as "Recorrido Por La Carretera 61" - in Uruguay the album and song title were translated as "De Nuevo En La Ruta 61"! Tombstone Blues for some reason is not translated.

"Real Live" - CD release, Columbia CK 39944 (USA/Canada), 1984, re-released 1985:
I have details of two 1980s US CD releases. They
both appear to have the same front insert, which is a single sheet folded
into four. The first CD has "DIDP
50196" to the right of the centre hole. ("DIDP" means "Digital ID
Popular", Columbia classical CDs have "DIDC".)
The rear insert of the second release has a similar design to the first but
with a different barcode
at bottom left. The CD now has "DIDP 050196" to
the right of the centre hole plus the inverted triangle symbol first added to
CDs and Side 1 of LPs and cassettes with Biograph in 1985.
Jack from Canada's copy has a 1984 rear insert but the 1985 CD!
Thanks to Jack from Canada and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol. One" - 47CD boxed set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; USB stick, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520 (Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK26" plus "DISC 30". The front sleeve has "Bob Dylan" at top right, missing from both the US LP and CD releases, but present on international releases. This album has been remastered, so is the eighth Dylan album remastered for this project. The CDs are different in detail, the US Real Live CD has catalogue number "88691924312D30", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-30". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
