        Shot Of Love (1981)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former
yearly Promo sections.
For releases of this
album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International
Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

      Original LP front |

Original US stereo LP, Columbia QC 38819, 27 Oct 1983.
Although the photographs are uncredited, they were taken by Sara Dylan during a visit to Israel
in September 1983 for their son Jesse's bar-mitzvah. The front picture of Bob
was taken through a car window. The rear picture is a
drawing by Bob that was originally intended as the front sleeve. The photograph
on the front of the inner sleeve shows Bob on the Mount of Olives with Jerusalem in the background.
(Thanks to Rod MacBeath for information.)
This
title was one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep
2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary
CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also
plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Six titles were available
in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one. Sadly the opportunity to include bonus
tracks of the excellent unreleased material from the Infidels
sessions was missed.

Tracklisting:
Side 1:
Jokerman; Sweetheart Like You; Neighborhood Bully; License To Kill;
Side 2: Man Of
Peace; Union Sundown; I And I; Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight.
This album is widely considered to have been a missed
opportunity, because of the strength of the tracks left off the final release! The tracks included
on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 speak for themselves. Out-takes from this album have been officially released as
follows:
7" Singles (1983):
Angel
Flying Too Close To The Ground (Willie Nelson) - released as single
B-side
Down In The Groove (1988): Death Is Not The End
The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Blind Willie McTell
(the released version is solo acoustic, but many Dylan fans consider the still
officially unreleased band version superior); Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart (early
version of Tight Connection To My Heart); Tell Me; Lord Protect My Child; Foot
Of Pride
Is It Rolling, Bob? A Reggae Tribute To Bob Dylan
Vol. 1 (2004): this album includes a reggae remix of I And I with legendary
drum and bass duo Sly & Robbie (Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) and a dub
remix of I And I by Doctor Dread, for both see
2004.
Thanks to Derek Barker of "Isis" magazine for
news that the next release of The Bootleg Series will be in May/June 2021, and will
feature the long-awaited 1983 Infidels sessions.
Thanks to Badlands for news that Record Store Day 2021 will include a 12"
vinyl single of Jokerman/I & I (The Reggae Remix EP). The B-side is from
the 2004 Reggae Tribute album
Is It Rolling, Bob?
listed above,
but that doesn't have a version of Jokerman.

"Uncut" magazine (UK), June 2021 - front with cover
    CD (my copy) |

Thanks to Jacques Colinet for information that the
June 2021 issue of the UK music magazine "Uncut", on sale 15 Apr 2021,

includes a cover CD called Dylan ...Revisited celebrating Bob's
80th birthday with fourteen newly recorded Dylan songs by artists such as
Richard Thompson and The Flaming Lips, all exclusive to this CD. The
highlight is a previously unreleased Dylan performance, Too Late (Acoustic
Version) from the forthcoming Bootleg Series 16
release covering the Infidels sessions. Thanks to Derek Barker for reminding me that "Too Late" was the working title of
Foot Of Pride. The song is very different from Foot Of Pride, but does
contain some of the same lyrics.

According to Michael Krogsgaard's recording sessions
articles this performance is from The Power Station, New
York, 23 Apr 1983, where it was listed as "Too Late" on the session sheets
as on 22 Apr 1983. Takes 8-12 on 23 Apr 1983 were labelled "acoustic", two
      of which were marked complete.

 The Bootleg Series
    Vol. 16 - Springtime In New York 1980-1985 (2021): Jokerman (Alternate Take);
Blind Willie McTell (Take 5, 11 Apr 1983); Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight (Version 1) (Alternate Take); Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight (Version 2) (Alternate Take); Neighborhood Bully (Alternate Take); Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart (Outtake); This Was My Love (Outtake); Too Late (Acoustic Version) (Outtake); Too Late (Band Version) (Outtake); Foot Of Pride (Outtake); Clean Cut Kid (Outtake); Sweetheart Like You (Alternate Take); Baby What You Want Me To Do (Outtake); Tell Me (Outtake); Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground (Outtake)*; Julius and Ethel (Outtake); Green, Green Grass Of Home (Outtake); Union Sundown (Outtake); Lord Protect My Child (Outtake); I And I (Alternate Take); Death Is Not The End (Full Version) (Outtake).
*A different take of Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground
was previously released on international 7" singles as the B-side of I And I and
is listed as rarity R-0156 in
    1983.
Another out-take from the album sessions is an early version of When The Night Comes Falling
From The Sky (later released on Empire Burlesque).

            |
Third Man Records of Detroit, MI, have announced the release of an
exclusive limited edition 7" stereo single with two takes of Blind
Willie McTell on 20 Aug 2021. Take 1 from 11 Apr 1983 on the A-side is unique to this
single, Take 5 on the B-side, also from 11 Apr 1983, is from Springtime In New York: The
          Bootleg Series, Vol. 16 (1980-1985). |

Vinyl and Tape Releases
"Infidels" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl

Columbia QC 38819 (USA) - front scan by David Plentus (commercial
    release) |

The front and rear of the sleeve and the front of the inner sleeve are
essentially the same as my UK copy shown below. The rear of the inner sleeve shows nine Dylan albums with
    the
interesting point that the cover of Freewheelin' is the UK version
(a higher crop of the design than the US version). The record has red
Columbia labels with the yellow Columbia logo in a ring round the outside.
Paul Melote has a commercial copy with a white sticker promoting two tracks from
the album.
Gerd Rundel has a mislabelled promo copy of Columbia QC 38819 with labels
belonging to Billy Joel's 1977 album The Stranger (Columbia JC 34987). The
record plays the correct Dylan tracks on both sides and has handwritten matrix
numbers: Side 1 - AL 38819 1F, Side 2 - BL 38819 1A. Both sides have "MASTERDISK
BK" stamped. There is a gold promo stamp on the rear sleeve covering the
barcode.

Gerd Rundel also has a late 1980s copy with "PC 38819" on the spine and just
"C 38819" on the record labels. The barcode at top right of the rear sleeve is different. The inner sleeve is the same as the 1983 release.
The Side 1 record label has the inverted
triangle symbol introduced on LPs and cassettes with Biograph
in 1985. The record of this copy has
handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-38819-1L, Side 2 - BL-38819-G1A.
Thanks to David Plentus, Gerd Rundel and Paul Melote for information and
pictures.

This copy of the late 1980s
release was exported to Germany.
The sleeve has "PC 38819" on the spine
and the rear has the same barcode as the late 1980s US release above.
There are
white "CBS The Family of Music"
stickers on the front and rear sleeve covering all
instances of "Columbia" with two covering "COLUMBIA" on the spine. There is also
an orange sticker on the front sleeve which contained the original owner's name
and address (now obscured).
The rear of the inner sleeve has a
white "CBS The Family of Music"
sticker covering "Columbia" as well. The record labels
are almost completely covered by blue circular
stickers with text in German "Aus warenrechtlichen Gründen muss dieses
Etikett überklebt werden [For copyright reasons this label must be
stickered over]". These blue stickers are the same as those on an
export copy of Blonde On Blonde owned by Lars M. Banke listed on that
album's page. The record of this copy has
handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL
38819 1L, Side 2 - (H AP)  BL-38819-G1A.

The UK release had a Shorepak sleeve printed in England by Shorewood
Packaging Co. Ltd. and the record came in a printed inner sleeve. The rear of the inner
sleeve is the same as the US version apart from the bottom text which says
"CBS Records and Tapes" instead of "Columbia Records and Tapes".
It does not have catalogue numbers under the album pictures. While the
    cover of
The
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is the UK version (a higher crop of the design
than the US version, but also like this on the US inner sleeve rear), the cover shown of Shot Of Love is the US
version with white title text (the UK version had black title text).
The UK vinyl album did not have a lyric insert like the Dutch release
below, but one was provided with
the UK cassette release CBS 40-25539 and is shown below. The promo copy
shown has a gold stamp "Property Of CBS. Demonstration Only. Not For Sale"
at top left of the rear sleeve. The record labels are the same as the
commercial copy. The 1983 record has orange/yellow CBS labels. Both UK copies shown have
      handwritten matrix numbers:
      Side 1 - CBS 25539-A1, Side 2 - CBS 25539-B2.
CBS 25539 (UK), mid 1980s:

    The
mid 1980s release comes in the same sleeve as the 1983 release except for a
barcode sticker on top left of the rear. The barcode with new catalogue
number, CBS 460727 1, looks the same as the barcode on the late 1980s
    release below.

The record comes in the same printed inner sleeve as that of the 1983
release, but now has red CBS labels, with the old catalogue number, the same
    as in 1983.
    In
contrast to the labels of the late 1980s release these labels have the same
text layout as in 1983 with the album title listed above "BOB DYLAN".
The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS
    25539 A3, Side 2 - CBS 25539-B1. |

    This
    reissue of Infidels
from the late 1980s has a new catalogue number, CBS 460727 1. It was sold in
the "Nice Price" series and it has a new inner sleeve showing albums from
this series instead of the original inner sleeve. The record again has red CBS
labels with the new catalogue number and "BOB DYLAN" back above the album title.

      rear.

The mid-1980s release has what looks like exactly the same insert as the
1983 release. The cassette is black with red CBS paper
labels, with the new CBS logo. There is a Woolworths price sticker for £6.99 on the end of the

CBS 25539 (Ireland) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (all variants) |

These 1983 records were made in Ireland, but they have the 1983 UK Shorepak sleeve and

the
original printed inner sleeve. The records have orange/yellow CBS labels, with
a quite different design from the 1983 UK labels above (e.g. all the UK
labels have the song titles left aligned, but these are centred).

On Side 1 Sweetheart Like You is mistitled as just "SWEETHEART" and Neighborhood
Bully is mistitled as just “NEIGHBOURHOOD”
    (the British English spelling - the UK releases use the American spelling);
    on
Side 2 I And I is mistitled as “I AM I”. These errors were corrected
on the late 1980s release with red CBS labels below.

There are three record label variants,
that I have called 1A, 1B and 2. They all have the track title
misspellings on
    Sides 1 and 2. On
    the first variant
(1A) the copyright
text on the record labels is printed round the bottom edge of the
label instead round the top edge as usual, on the second variant (1B) the
copyright text on the record labels is printed round the top edge of the
labels as expected. These variants do not include "MADE IN ENGLAND" on either label.
Ger Rundel has a copy with mixed labels where the Side 1 label is variant 1A
and the Side 2 label is variant 1B.

The record with second
variant labels (2) comes in the same UK outer and inner sleeves as the records
with first variant labels. This time both sides have the circumference text
in the upper area and “MADE IN ENGLAND” to the right of the centre hole. The
labels have the same title  as the first
    variant labels.
The records of
all copies
shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side
1 - CBS-25539 A1, Side
2 - CBS-25539-B1.

    same as 1983 release) |
    Simon Blokker has a
mid-1980s release with the following features:
      - Unexplained stickers on the rear sleeve to the
left of and below of the song titles

      - The rear sleeve is like the 1983 rear sleeve at
top right, without a barcode and with 25539, "CB|291" in a capsule and
"58" in a circle (see above)

      - The rear sleeve is like the late 1980s release at
bottom right with "01-025539-20" (see below)

      - This album must have been sold in Germany because
it has newspaper clippings in German (reviews of the album) pasted on the
front and rear of the inner sleeve. The oval sticker has text "PREIS DER
DEUTSCHEN SCHALLPLATTEN KRITIK Vierteljahresliste [German Quarterly Record
      Review Award]

      - The inner rear sleeve has "01-025539-20" at
bottom left like Ronald Born's Club Edition above, also "01-025539-20" on
      the lyrics insert.

 Manuel García Jara and
Gerd Rundel both have 1991 "Nice Price"
releases of Infidels
with catalogue number Columbia 460727 1. Each has a "Dylan Originals" sticker on the front
sleeve and, as
well as the inner sleeve and the lyrics insert, a "Dylan Originals" 12" insert
with a catalogue of Dylan albums. Both records have red Columbia labels, but the
text layout is very different. |

Columbia 460727 1 (NL) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (second 1991

The record of Gerd's 1991 Columbia copy has
labels with a text layout that
looks like those of other red CBS NL 1980s releases, including the gold vinyl
copy shown above, so must be earlier than Manuel's copy. There are four
distinctive differences:
  -
“STEREO” is
present to the left of the centre hole and the "LC|0149" capsule is above it

  -
The catalogue
number and “BIEM/STEMRA” are printed to the right of the centre hole

  -
The song titles
are centred and listed in two continuous lines

  -
“P 1983 CBS
Records Inc.” still appears below the writer's credit.

The record has very confusing matrix numbers: Side 1
- AL 38819 1J
(handwritten), 01-25539-3A-1 (stamped), 01-460727 3A1 (handwritten), Side 2 - BL 38819 1J
(handwritten), 01-25539-3B-1 (stamped), 01-460727 3B1 (handwritten), plus “NL”
stamped on each side near to the first matrix number.
The record
labels of Manuel's
second release copy
have these differences:
  - "STEREO" is now missing

  - The catalogue
number and “BIEM/STEMRA” are printed to the left of the centre hole with the "LC|0149"
  capsule below them

  - The
song titles are left aligned and listed one per line

  - “P 1983
Sony Music Entertainment Inc.” is now printed at the bottom of the labels.

The record of Manuel's
second release copy shown has completely different US style matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL
38819 1J, Side 2 - BL 38819 1J.

CBS 40-25539 (NL) - front scan by Jean-Pol Hiernaux (late 1980s release) |

The first Dutch cassette release shown came with a single fold
insert and a folded lyrics insert. The cassette is light grey with black
text printed on the case, there are no paper labels. Thanks to Manuel García
Jara for pointing out this must be from the late 1980s because it has a chromium
dioxide cassette.
The second Dutch cassette release shown has a new
catalogue number, 460727 4. It came with a wider
insert and again with a folded lyrics insert. The cassette now has the
"Columbia" logo so dates from after the label name change in 1991. However,
the insert still has "CBS", so dates from just before the label name change
    - there may be a release from around 1990 with "CBS" on the cassette. The
cassette is black with red Columbia paper labels. |

Slow Train Coming,
Saved,
Infidels
and Real Live
are the only Dylan albums from Spain where promo copies were released with white
labels.
The promo copy of this album came in the regular sleeve and inner
sleeve with a record with white
CBS promo labels. There was also a stapled promo booklet in Spanish about
Bob's life and his new album written by Jesús
Ordovás, who has written several books about Bob Dylan in Spanish. The title of
the booklet translates as "The legend lives on... Single "UNION SUNDOWN"
taken from his new LP."
The sleeve and inner sleeve were printed in
Spain by Offset ALG of Madrid, and the Discos
CBS address shown is
Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16. The commercial copy has orange/yellow CBS
labels. Both records were made in Spain.

The test pressing (Discos CBS 20.461)
comes in a white card promo sleeve with a front sticker with black typed text in
Spanish. The record has blank Discos CBS labels with typed text and promo
stickers, and the copy shown has stamped US matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 38819,

Manuel García Jara's promo copy has "Disco para demostración. Venta prohibida
[Demonstration Record. Sale prohibited] in large text on the front sleeve.
Although this is a CBS release there is a Columbia logo on the front sleeve. This album has the title
in Spanish and in white instead of black, and the rear sleeve has song titles and credits in Spanish.
Thanks to Sergio Magnacca for pointing out that the Spanish translation of the
album title is incorrect (as for translations on many other Argentinean
releases, sadly) - "Infidelidades" translates to "Infidelities" (as in
"unfaithful acts"). Sergio suggests the correct Spanish translation is "Infieles"!
There is no insert or picture inner sleeve. The promo record has orange/yellow
Discos CBS labels with the same promo text as the front sleeve.

that look like "AL 3915"), Side 2 - BL 38819 (38819 was the US
catalogue number). The matrix numbers of Manuel García Jara's promo copy are
also Side 1 - AL 38119, Side 2 - BL 38819.

Original CD Releases
"Infidels" - CD release: CBS/Sony 35DP 93 (Japan),
21 Dec 1983; CD
release:
Sony Records SRCS 6172 (Japan), 1
Dec 1991:
As
far as I know, these were the only two CD releases of this album in Japan
before the hybrid SA-CD release in 2003 (see below).
Information found by Wil Gielen: "CBS/Sony built
a full-scale CD software production plant in Shizuoka prefecture. The company
did this without any financial assistance from either Sony or CBS. The world's
first CD software production line commenced operation in April 1982.
The months leading up to the scheduled October product
launch were difficult for all concerned. The problem with discs warping remained
until the very last minute. After successively testing various materials, a new
material called polycarbonate, used for making automobile bumpers, was found.
Production of discs got under way in mid-September, about two weeks before the
launch." The first CDs ever manufactured were released on 1 Oct 1982.

anywhere in the world. It had a grey card box-type obi with price

      ¥3,500
      and a 28-page
stapled booklet as the front insert.

The first Canadian CD was manufactured in the USA, as
there was at that time no Columbia CD pressing plant in Canada. The catalogue
number on the Canadian CD itself is just CK 38819. Moise Potié's later Canadian
copy has the same artwork as Jack's but a slightly different CD with the
difference shown. There are only three song titles above the centre hole as
opposed to four on the earlier CD (which is the same as on the US CD).
Thanks to Gil Lamont and Jack from Canada
    for information and scans.

Gino Galvez's copy of CBS CDCBS 25539 was the first CD release of the album
sold in the UK and possibly elsewhere in Europe. The front insert was a 16-page stapled booklet including the song lyrics.
There is a "Compact Disc" logo on the front of the front insert. The rear
insert says "Made in Japan by CBS/Sony" and the CD was made in Japan with
a secondary catalogue number "DIDP 93". Gerd Rundel's later copy
of CBS CDCBS 25539 has a CD made in Austria while the inserts were printed
in Holland and have the slight differences from the UK-bought copy shown.
Confusingly, the text "Made in Japan by CBS/Sony" remains on the rear
insert! (Maybe the first copies with the Dutch insert still had discs made
    in Japan.) |

This time the inserts don't say "Printed in Holland".
The Columbia 460727 2 release dates from the mid-1990s
and has a new catalogue number. This time the CD as well as the insert has
"Columbia". The disc was again made in Austria, but has the Dutch "BIEM/STEMRA"
copyright logo to the right of the centre hole.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol.
One" - 47CD boxed
set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; USB stick,
Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520
(Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album
Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke
Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card
sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set
of previously released non-album tracks entitled
Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and
The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album,
also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set
Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
    Jackson (Acoustic version),
R-0085, see
    1971. The set is
    therefore listed in 2013.
The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and
    previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker
card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.

The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK25"
plus "DISC 29". The CDs are different in detail, the US
Infidels CD has
catalogue number "88691924312D29", whereas
the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-29". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria).
The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs,
and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I
haven't shown them for the later CDs.

    details of the set, see
