Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. Because of the very large number of Desire releases, this page now contains all the CD releases of the album. Desire tape releases are now here. This was the first US CD release of Desire. The CD has a folded front
insert with minimal information. The CD itself has the CBS logo. First
copies of this CD release of the album in the USA came in the "long box"
shown. Wil Gielen has a copy of the US release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain (see below). Thanks to Hans Seegers and Gil Lamont for information and scans. |

Wil Gielen has an early 1990s copy of the US release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record store chain. The obi was added by the store to import US copies (which were much cheaper than Japanese releases) to provide buyers with information in Japanese. The inside of the front insert and the CD are different from the US copy owned by Gil Lamont. The CD includes the inverted triangle used on Columbia LPs, cassettes and CDs in the USA since the release of Biograph in 1985. |

The price on the obi of ¥1,602 has Japanese characters meaning "excluding tax", which means it was imported into Japan after the introduction of sales tax in 1989.

The album with the yellow artwork was the first CD release of Desire in Canada.
Like the US release, the front insert was a single folded card. This CD has
the Columbia logo. The mid-1990s release from Moise Potié has green artwork
and a stapled booklet for the front insert. The CDs differ in that the first
release has "MADE IN CANADA", while the second release has "MADE AT SMC"
(Sony Music Canada). The second release has catalogue number WCK 33893 on the spines but CK 33893 on the CD itself. Thanks to Jack from Canada and Moise Potié for information and scans. |

My copy of Columbia CD 32570 in the "Nice Price" series dates from 1997 as shown by the UK-specific promo insert with two 1997 releases - The Best Of Bob Dylan and Time Out Of Mind. The front insert is a 24-page stapled booklet including the lyrics of the songs. Keith Schweiger's copy has a 2000 insert showing The Best Of Bob Dylan and The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2. My copy has a black CD tray, Keith Schweiger's copy has a clear CD tray and a crop of the front photo on the reverse of the rear insert. Both rear inserts are the same.

First release: CBS/Sony 30DP 307 (1983), with yellow card obi with price ¥3,000 (the "30" in the catalogue number means ¥3,000). It has a 28-page booklet with lyrics. Keith Schweiger's copy is later, with a reduced price of ¥2,012 including sales tax.
Mid-price "Nice Price" release: Sony Records SRCS 6168 (1991), with black, red, white, blue and yellow paper obi with price ¥1,800. It has a 24-page booklet with lyrics.

These releases use the original "86003" catalogue number. They have a single folded card as the front insert. The rear insert does not have a barcode. The first CBS CD is silver with black text and was made in Austria, the second is silver with black and white text with red panels and was made in Australia by Disctronics. | |||

The Columbia CD release still uses the "86003" catalogue number and also has a single folded card as the front insert, this time with a completely different inside. The rear insert now has a barcode. The front of the jewel case has two stickers, one with "SONY SUPER VALUE" and the other being the 1991 "Dylan Originals" sticker. The CD is red with silver text. |

magazine series called "Discos de tu Vida" [Records of your Life]. The

This release is housed in a digipak and the disc contains both a CD version and an SA-CD stereo version. Again, despite the fact this album was released in quadraphonic sound, there was no 5.1 surround sound version. |

The inside of the digipak has two unpublished Rolling Thunder Revue pictures of Bob from 1976. There is an 8-page booklet with the original sleeve notes. The lyrics of the songs are no longer included. The SA-CD design reproduces the Columbia US stereo vinyl label used in 1976. The booklet for the Canadian releases has been printed in Canada. My Canadian copy of this release also has the yellow sticker shown for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan on the outside of the shrink-wrap. Thanks to Gil Lamont for the scan of a different yellow sticker from his US copy - this sticker is album-specific.

This release is a reissue of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release. It contains the unfaded version of Oh, Sister with the uncensored exchange between Emmylou Harris and Bob that was earlier found on 1990s "Nice Price" vinyl and cassette reissues of Desire (R-0208, see 1985). The disc is black and silver and comes in a folded sleeve of thick card with a limited edition number on the back (my copy is "01361"). |

The rear sleeve of my copy has a new Sony Music logo (not used in North America) and states the disc was made in Austria. However, there is no country of origin on the disc itself, which also does not have the Columbia catalogue number "88697947012". There is an eight page stapled booklet with the Desire photos and sleeve notes, and a Mobile Fidelity folded card insert with details of their technology on the outside and illustrations of 24 albums from their catalogue on the inside, including The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (2081) and The Basement Tapes (2082).
André Wilbers has two promo copies, both with the limited edition number on the rear of the card sleeve at bottom left. The first copy has nothing in the number box and the barcode is crossed out. The first copy has just "No." in the number box and the barcode is not crossed out. Both of these copies have the same booklet, insert and disc as my commercial copy.
There is also a 2013 Mobile Fidelity stereo 2LP set release of the album that also contains the rarity.

This release at mid-price is in a standard jewel case and consists of the remastered CD layer only of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release above. The front CD insert booklet includes pictures from the SA-CD booklet. This 2004 remastered CD has CD-TEXT (as does the 2003 hybrid SA-CD), whereas the previous releases did not. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for this information. Scans of the US release required! Thanks to "Bob Dylan Notes" for the scan of the US front sticker, which is different from the SA-CD sticker above, and has a spelling mistake - "violing"!

The Japanese release comes in a card sleeve reproducing the LP sleeve with a side obi. Both the promo and the commercial releases have the "DYLAN ALIVE '04" silver sticker with black text on the cellophane sleeve. Wil Gielen's copy is a promo, with a numbered promo sticker on the rear of the card sleeve. It also has "SAMPLE LOANED" in red in the clear centre of the CD itself. The obi has price ¥1,890 (¥1,800 before tax) and release date "04-9-23" (23 Sep 2004). The original release date is shown as "76-1-5" (5 Jan 1976) and the withdrawal date as "05-3-22" (17 Feb 2005). There is an insert in English and Japanese which folds out to a larger size. The CD is in a picture inner sleeve. The promo CD has "SAMPLE LOANED" in red in the clear centre, missing from the commercial CD. |

This release is on a Blu-spec CD, an audio-only disc which is presumably intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format, currently on sale in Japan only. The copy shown is still sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The release date is shown as "09-9-30" (30 Sep 2009), the original release date as "76-1-5" (5 Jan 1976) and the withdrawal date as "10-3-29" (29 Mar 2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray technology. |

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK18" plus "DISC 21" (because Blonde On Blonde, Before The Flood and The Basement Tapes had two CDs each). The CDs are different in detail, the US Desire CD has catalogue number "88691924312D21", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-21". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming will be released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2013 remastered Desire will be SICP 30495, more details will be added when available. |
