The Basement Tapes 1975
The Basement Tapes
(1975)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

Because of the very large number of Desire releases, this page now contains all the tape (8-track and cassette) releases of the album. Desire CD releases are now here. To return to the main Desire page press "Up" or the back button in your browser. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Stereo 8-Track Tape Releases

So far 8-track stereo releases have only been received from the USA, Canada, the UK, Italy, Spain and Australia. However, the Portuguese cassette release below lists an 8-track release on the insert.

"Desire" - 8-track stereo cartridge release, Columbia PCA 33893 (USA), Jan 1976:

Columbia PCA 33893 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by Manuel García Jara
This rare release has a changed playing order with Joey split over two programmes of the cartridge. Because this is a rarity, this release is also listed in 1976. The Columbia Canada and CBS UK 8-track stereo releases below have the same split, although the Italian 8-track stereo release below has a different split. This US release comes in a black slipcase and has a dark grey tape cartridge with two paper labels.

Columbia PCA 33893 (USA) - front of tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara

Columbia PCA 33893 (USA) - underside of tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara

The playing order is:

Program 1: Isis, Mozambique; Oh, Sister
Program 2: Romance In Durango; Black Diamond Bay; Joey (Part 1)
Program 3: Joey (Conclusion); One More Cup Of Coffee
Program 4: Hurricane; Sara.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Desire" - 8-track stereo cartridge release, Columbia PCA 33893 (Canada), Jan 1976:

Columbia PCA 33893 (Canada) - front of slipcase, scan by Manuel García Jara
This rare release in a black slipcase with text in English and French again has a changed playing order with Joey split over two programmes of the cartridge. Because this is a rarity, this release is also listed in 1976. The Columbia US and the CBS UK 8-track stereo releases above and below have the same split, although the Italian 8-track stereo release below has a different split. The tape cartridge is orange with a white label. The reverse of the tape cartridge is blank.

The playing order is:

Program 3: Joey (Conclusion); One More Cup Of Coffee
Program 4: Hurricane; Sara.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Desire" -  8-track stereo cartridge releases, CBS 42-86003 (UK), Jan 1976:

CBS 42-86003 (UK) - front of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers (first variant)
This rare release again has a changed playing order with Joey split over two programmes of the cartridge. Because this is a rarity, this release is also listed in 1976. The Columbia US 8-track release listed above has the same split, although the Italian 8-track stereo release below has a different split. Hans Seegers' copy has a black tape cartridge inside a black card slipcase. The cartridge has a single fold-over paper label. Manuel García Jara's copy has a white plastic cartridge with the same single fold-over paper label and no card slipcase.

The playing order is:

Program 1: Isis, Mozambique; Oh, Sister
Program 2: Romance In Durango; Black Diamond Bay; Joey (Part 1)
Program 3: Joey (Conclusion); One More Cup Of Coffee
Program 4: Hurricane; Sara.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Desire" - 8-track stereo cartridge release, CBS Sugar 42-86003 (Italy), Jan 1976:

CBS 42-86003 (Italy) - front of 8-track tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara
This release has a light brown cartridge with an orange paper label. It has a different playing order from the US and UK 8-track stereo cartridge releases above, and includes a rarity - an excerpt of Sara repeated on Program 4. It is therefore also listed in 1976.

The playing order is:

Program 1: Hurricane; Sara
Program 2: Isis; One More Cup Of Coffee; Oh, Sister
Program 3: Joey; Mozambique
Program 4: Black Diamond Bay; Romance In Durango; Sara (frammento [excerpt]).

"Desire" - 8-track stereo cartridge release, CBS 42-86003 (Spain), Jan 1976:

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - front of tape cartridge with gold safety shield, scan by Manuel García Jara

This very rare Spanish cartridge tape is one of only four Dylan 8-track cartridges released there (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Nashville Skyline, both by CBS, and Planet Waves by Asylum/Hispavox were the other three). This item still has the original golden safety shield across the tape opening (these cartridges were released wrapped in cellophane with this shield but not in slipcases).

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - detail of reverse of tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - underside of tape cartridge with gold safety shield, scan by Manuel García Jara

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - end of tape cartridge scan by Manuel García Jara

The cartridge was made for CBS Spain by an unusual company, BOCSA, and the labels were printed by Gráficas Dauco (the usual printing company for CBS tapes). It must have been released in early 1976 because the CBS address is still Calle Princesa, 1. This was when the first Spanish copies of the album came to the stores without the text "Nº 1 en USA" printed on the front (like the front of this cartridge). The album title has been translated as Deseo on the cartridge end. The song titles are in Spanish and in English. Romance In Durango is split between Program 3 and Program 4. Because this is a rarity, this entry is also listed in 1976.

Tracklisting:

Program 1: Huracán [Hurricane]; Sara
Program 2: Isis; Mozambique; Oh, Hermana [Oh, Sister]
Program 3: Joey; Romance En Durango (Primera Parte) [Romance In Durango] (First Part)
Program 4: Romance En Durango (Segunda Parte) [Romance In Durango] (Second Part); Bahia Del Diamante Negro [Black Diamond Bay]; Una Taza Mas De Cafe [One More Cup Of Coffee].

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Desire" - 8-track stereo tape release, CBS TC 4778 (Australia), Jan 1976:

CBS TC 4778 (Australia) - top of tape cartridge, scan by Stuart Moore
Tracklisting (same as US and other releases above):

Program 1: Isis; Mozambique; Oh, Sister
Program 2: Romance In Durango; Black Diamond Bay; Joey (Part 1)
Program 3: Joey (Conclusion); One More Cup Of Coffee (Valley Below)
Program 4: Hurricane; Sara.

Joey is split between Program 2 and Program 3. Because this is a rarity, this entry is also listed in 1976.

Apart from the catalogue number, the text layout is the same as the PCT 33893 release. The insert again does not have a barcode and is blank on the reverse.

Columbia JCT 33893 (USA) - cassette insert scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s releases)

The second US release of JCT 33893 dates from the 1980s and now has a barcode on the insert, which is also blank on the reverse. The first Columbia US Dylan cassette to have a barcode on first release was Saved in 1980. The cassette is similar to the late 1970s release and is again light grey with black text. It has "MADE IN USA" embossed at top right of Side 1, present on Side 2 of the late 1970s cassette.

The third JCT 33893 cassette has the same insert with a barcode and is transparent smoked grey with white text printed directly on it, there are again no paper labels.

Columbia PCT 33893 (Canada) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (later 1970s release 3)

The first later 1970s release shown now has "CBS Records Canada Limited" on the labels so dates from after the company name change in late 1976. The cassette is light grey with yellow paper labels and "MADE IN U.S.A." is embossed at top right of Side 2.

The second and third later 1970s releases have a different insert. The second release cassette is off white/beige, with no paper labels - Side 1 scan required. The third release cassette is black plastic with gold text, there are again no paper labels.

"Desire" - stereo cassette releases: CBS 40-86003 (UK), 1976, later 1970s (two variants):

CBS 40-86003 (UK) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (1976 release)
All three of these 1970s releases have a short cassette insert.

The first UK cassette release of this album from 1976 has a white cassette with orange CBS paper labels with black text.

The second 1970s release has virtually the same insert although the text ion the rear of the outside of the insert is printed slightly lower. The cassette is now light grey with blue text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The text has the same layout as the text on the orange labels. The text on Side 1 is badly rubbed away.

The third 1970s release insert now has an anti-counterfeit pattern on the outside rear. The cassette is now light grey with black text printed directly on to it, there are again no paper labels. This time the text layout is completely different.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

"Desire" - "Nice Price" compact cassette reissues: CBS 40-32570 (UK), 1980s (two releases); Columbia/CBS 40-32570 (UK), early 1990s (two releases):

CBS 40-32570 (UK), 1980s (two releases):

CBS 40-32570 (UK) - front of cassette with "CBS Nice Price" sticker, Manuel García Jara (1980s release)
The Columbia/CBS UK cassette releases shown (and one vinyl release) contain an unfaded version of Oh, Sister with an uncensored exchange between Emmylou Harris and Bob (R-0208, this is cut on the normal LP and CD versions). The insert has "Columbia" on the spine. The earlier CBS cassette releases date from the 1980s, and have "CBS" logos on the insert front and spine. Manuel's copy has a different outside insert from mine, and no barcode. My copy has a barcode on a sticker, not part of the original release. The three light grey cassettes shown look identical with black text printed on to them directly and no paper labels, but my copy and Manuel's definitely do not have R-0208. On all cassettes the track order is altered, with Sara at the end of Side 1, and Oh, Sister at the end of Side 2.

Columbia/CBS 40-32570 (UK) - front of cassette insert with printed barcode and "Nice Price" catalogue, scan by Kenneth Robson (both 1990s releases)
Both these 1990s releases have "Columbia" on the insert but still have "CBS" on the cassettes. They both contain R-0208 at the end of Side 2. The first 1990s cassette is off-white with black text, the second cassette is clear with white text, they both come with the same "Nice Price" insert.

"Desire" - stereo compact cassette releases, CBS 40-86003 (NL), 1976 (four releases); Columbia 40-32750 (NL), 1990s:

CBS 40-86003 (NL), 1976 onwards (four releases):
To summarise: the first and second releases have the same insert but the cassettes are different; the second and third releases have the same cassette but the inserts are different. The mysterious fourth release has a similar insert to the first and second releases but a completely different cassette.

CBS 40-86003 (NL) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Ger Hemel (first and second releases)
Ger Hemel's first release copy is possibly the first cassette release of this album in Holland. There is a short insert and the cassette is buff-coloured with orange CBS labels. The running order is changed - Oh Sister is its expected place at the end of Side 1, but is not the rarity version (see above). One More Cup Of Coffee is the last track on Side 2 while Sara replaces it as the fourth track on Side 1. Both the insert and the cassette sides have "1975" as the copyright date although the album was not released until Jan 1976. The first release outside insert has a "y" in a circle above the Dolby logo on the spine, but not yet an "LC" code to the left.

The second release comes with the same insert as the first release. The cassette is now light grey with black text, there are no paper labels.

CBS 40-86003 (NL) - detail of outside of cassette insert, scan by Ger Hemel (first and second releases - "y" in circle above Dolby logo, no "LC" code on left)

CBS 40-86003 (NL) - cassette Side 1 photocopy by Paul Shenton (second and third releases)

CBS 40-86003 (NL) - cassette Side 2 photocopy by Paul Shenton (second and third releases)

CBS 40-86003 (NL) - outside of cassette insert, photocopy by Paul Shenton (fourth release)

Paul Shenton's third release copy has the same cassette as Ger's second release copy and the inside of the insert is also the same. However the outside of the insert is slightly different - there is now a "16" and an "A" in circles above the Dolby logo, and the European "LC|0149" code to the left. The "LC" code means it dates from the late 1970s. The green colour is also slightly lighter.

Paul has a mysterious fourth copy that is different from the others. The outside of the insert is a much lighter green. The symbols are the same as those of the first and second releases, there is no "LC|0149" code. However "NL printed in Holland" is missing from the inside of the insert, although the copyright is still the Dutch "BIEM/STEMRA". The cassette is light grey with blue text, there are no paper labels. It has a different text design and "MADE IN HOLLAND" is missing.

This 1990s Dutch Columbia cassette release is the direct equivalent of the UK Columbia cassette 40-32570 above but has a different running order - the same as the 1970s Dutch cassette releases. The cassette is transparent grey with white text printed directly on to it, there are again no paper labels.

For the 1976 "Discolibro" vinyl release of Desire and the "Discolibro" catalogue for Summer 1976 with Desire featured on the cover and inside, see here. The cassette insert has the "Discolibro" logo twice as shown but this logo is not on the cassette itself which is similar to that of the first Spanish cassette release with orange CBS paper labels. The reverse of the insert lists other CBS cassette releases. The insert was printed by Graficas Dauco, Madrid. The regular 1976 release has the same inside insert and cassette except that Side 2 of the regular cassette has four screws, and can be opened, while the "Discolibro" cassette is sealed. The album and song titles are in Spanish and English on the insert and printed in Spanish only on the cassette labels.

The 1982 commercial cassette has minimal artwork with just track titles and timings, the reverse of the insert is blank. The cassette is of white plastic with orange text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. The album and song titles again are in Spanish and English on the insert and printed on the cassette in Spanish only. This cassette now has Dolby noise reduction.
