This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former
yearly Promo sections.
This title was one of the fifteen Dylan albums released
in late 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an
ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player
that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this).

This page is incomplete - more international stereo releases of this album
required. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International
Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Original CD and MiniDisc Releases
"Highway 61 Revisited" -
CD release,
CBS/Sony 30DP 305 (Japan), 1 Apr 1985:
Hans Seegers' sealed copy of 30DP 305 also has a card
box-type obi with top and bottom flaps (not shown). This obi has a
completely different rear, not cut away at the top, and showing other albums
including Blood On The Tracks (30DP 306) and Desire (30DP
307). It has two prices, ¥2,812 as the total price, and ¥2,730 as the price
before sales tax (the front price flash is missing). The earlier obi is from
before Japan introduced a sales tax on CDs.
Thanks to Sheiji Murata and Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"Highway 61 Revisited" - promo and commercial CD releases,
CBS/Sony
CSCS
6012
(Japan),
1 Jun 1990:
This mid-price release has a
black,
red, white, blue obi
with price
¥1,800 and
date "C-6-1" on the obi and the rear insert. Thanks to
Seiji Murata for information about the Japanese CD Date Code System and
year letters used from 1984 to Aug 1991 - "C" is 1990.
The promo release
has
a silver disc with black text, and the commercial release has a black disc
with silver text. The promo release also has a numbered sticker on the
rear insert and the Japanese text for promo on the CD itself.
Thanks to
Hans Seegers for information and scans.
"Highway 61 Revisited" - CD release in "LP-Style"
packaging, Sony Records SRCS 7904 (Japan), 21 Dec 1995:
Sony Records SRCS 7904 (Japan) - front with obi, picture found by Rob Cole |
This Super Bit Mapped release has the dates "95-12-21" and "97.12.20" on the obi,
which has a price of ¥2,000. The later date is the "sell by"
date, after which unsold copies of this release will be withdrawn. Note this Japanese release has a catalogue number of SRCS 7904, and
the next one has a number of SRCS 9074 - these are correct. This album is housed in a card sleeve with an obi, and booklet giving the
lyrics of the songs in Japanese. The obi has a price of ¥2,000.

Seegers |
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin
for information and scans of this item in the "Super 1600 Nice Price"
series, which is housed in a regular jewel case with an obi, and booklet
giving the lyrics of the songs in Japanese. The obi has a date of "96-10-21"
and price of ¥1,600. It also has a date of "65-9-1" which must be the
original Japanese release date. Hans Seeger's copy has a "sell by" date of
"98.10.20" at the bottom right of the obi, which has been covered by red
tape on Éamonn Ó Catháin's copy! I can
only assume the second copy was sold after the intended withdrawal date. The promo release has a sticker on the rear
insert and a stamp with "SAMPLE" on the CD itself.

"Highway 61 Revisited" - CD releases, Columbia CK
9189 (USA),
1980s, re-released mid-1990s:
Columbia CK 9189 (USA) - front of
"long box", scan by Hans Seegers |
This release was on sale in the USA until replaced by
the hybrid SA-CD edition in 2003 (see below). The first CD release of the album
in the USA came in the "long box" shown. Although it says "Now Made In The
U.S.A." on the rear, the disc was made in Japan as stated in the bottom
text. It has minimal packaging - the front insert is a single folded card with the liner notes on the inside.
Jim Siddy has a copy where the rear insert still states the disc was made in
Japan as shown, but was actually made in the USA. It has the upside-down
triangle logo to the right of the centre hole, introduced on CDs, cassettes and
records in the USA with Biograph in 1985.
Wil Gielen has two copies of
the US release with different discs imported into Japan with obis from the Shinseido
record store chain -scans required.

"Highway 61 Revisited" - gold CD release, Columbia/DCC GZS-1021 (USA/Canada),
2 Jun 1992:
Columbia/DCC GZS-1021 (USA) - front of slipcase scan by Gil Lamont |
This release was remastered by Steve Hoffman from the original 1965
master tapes and released by DCC under licence from Columbia. It was
generally accepted to be the definitive version of the album on CD, if not
on all formats, until the hybrid SA-CD/CD version was released (see below). Although it's out of print, it can still be purchased online from
retailers such as www.amazon.com. The CD itself is in a standard jewel
case inside a black/gold slipcase. Juergen Flicker has what looks like an earlier copy
than Gil Lamont's with a different rear
insert and CD. The insert has the barcode in a different location, "Disc
manufactured in Japan" and a different Californian address for DCC, the gold CD
has "Made in Japan" to the left of the centre hole. Both variants have Bob Johnston's name misspelled as "Bob Johnson"on
the rear insert and the gold CD itself! This copy did not have a
slipcase. Wil Gielen has a copy of
the US gold release imported into Japan with an obi from the Yukimu Corporation record
store chain. This copy has a slipcase but is otherwise identical to Juergen
Flicker's with the disc made in Japan and the first DCC address. The
slipcase was printed in Canada. This copy has a black and gold obi with
price ¥4,200 (excluding tax). Thanks to Gil Lamont, Juergen Flicker
and Wil Gielen for information
and scans. |

Canadian 1980s releases above). There is also a different code at top right of
the rear insert. Both the CDs look the same.

This album was included in Bob Dylan
Volume Two, a 1990s 3CD set with three individual CDs in a card box
containing Subterranean
Homesick Blues [Bringing It All Back Home], Highway 61 Revisited
and Nashville Skyline. All three CDs had the "CBS" logo and the same

CBS/Columbia CDCBS 62572 (Australia) - front scan by Stuart Moore (all

This CD comes with minimal artwork, the front insert is a single folded
card. This release was on sale until replaced by the
hybrid SA-CD edition in 2003. It was also sold in a double width jewel case
with Hard Rain. Stuart Moore has a CBS CD release with the disc
manufactured by Disctronics and two
Columbia CD releases. The first Columbia CD from 1991 has the four lines of
red text
above the catalogue number as: line 1 - "MANUFACTURED", line 2 - "IN
AUSTRALIA BY SONY", line 3 - "MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT", line 4 - "(AUSTRALIA)
LIMITED". The later 1990s release CD has the text as: line 1 - "MANUFACTURED

release is much brighter and harder than that of the 1992 DCC gold CD mix by
Steve Hoffman (see above) - for a detailed description, see Roger Ford's "Electric
Dylan" web-site
.
There is an eight page
booklet with the original sleeve notes and more unpublished pictures of Bob
from 1965. The SA-CD design reproduces the Columbia US "360

printed in Canada. This release
also has the sticker shown for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan on the
outside of the shrink-wrap.

same as the USA release. The rear insert was also made in Canada, as was the
CD itself. Jack from Canada's copy has a orange CD, but the CD in Ronald
Born's copy is red, although otherwise the same.
Thanks to Jack from Canada and Ronald Born for

"Highway 61 Revisited" - Blu-spec CD release,
Sony Music SICP 20024 (Japan), 24 Dec 2008:
The copies shown are still sealed, with a blue and white obi with price
¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The release date is shown as "08-12-24" (24 Dec
2008), the original release date as "65-8-30" (30 Aug 1965) and the withdrawal
date as "09-6-23" (23 Jun 2009). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on
the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray technology. Two sealed copies are
shown, one with a numbered promo sticker on the rear of the obi.
Éamonn Ó Catháin said (14 Mar 2009): "I just received my first ever Blu-Spec
CD, Highway 61Revisited. The sound is very good, as good as it can get
from a CD (except the Hoffman DCC). I A/B'd it with my original Japanese CD and
the sound from the new one leapt from the speakers, making the other one sound
lifeless in comparison. The bass work on It Takes A Lot T o Laugh, It Takes A
Train To Cry is outstanding and incredibly detailed. Instruments seem much
better placed and in some cases the voice appears more centred than hitherto. I
found Desolation Row to be a revelation, very engaging, a real performance."

*The
distinction between “myth” and “legend” made in English isn’t made in other
European languages – they’re both types of traditional stories, but basically a
“myth” is a story that was never actually true, whereas a “legend” is a story
that is based on true events or people. This means an “urban legend” should
actually be called an “urban myth”, while Bob’s certainly a legend and
definitely not a myth!

"The Complete Album Collection Vol.

set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; USB stick,
Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520
(Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album
Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke
Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card
sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set
of previously released non-album tracks entitled
Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and
The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set
Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
Jackson (Acoustic version),
R-0085, see
1971. The set is
therefore listed in 2013.
The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and
previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker
card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.
The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK6"
plus "DISC 6". The CDs are different in detail, the US Highway 61 Revisited CD has
catalogue number "88691924312D6", whereas
the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-06". The
European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria).
The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs,
and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I
haven't shown them for the later CDs.
For more
details of the set, see
International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
Picture from www.amazon.com |
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for news that The Complete Album Collection
will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with
the intention to release them all in 2014.
The first part, called
Dylan '60s,
will be released by Sony Music Japan on 26 Mar 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2
specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY
MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs,
which are numbered SICP 30471 to SICP 30481 (Bob
Dylan's Greatest Hits,
not included in the US and European sets, is included here as SICP 30479).
Side Tracks,
to be released at the same time, is SICP 30519-20. All the sleeves will have
orange top obis similar to the 2004 Japanese release in card sleeves.
The 2013 remastered
Highway 61 Revisited
will be SICP 30476 - more details will be added when available. It will almost
certainly be the same as the 2013 Japanese Blu-spec CD2 release, Sony Music SICP
30027, see above. |

1965-1966 The Cutting Edge Collector's Edition" - 18CD set, Columbia/Legacy
(catalogue number?) (USA), 6 Nov 2015:
Photo from bobdylan.com |
This 18CD set includes all the studio takes
recorded by Bob in 1965 and 1966 including all the previously released
tracks of this album. Ben Rollins says in the book with the 18CD set: "released masters have been remixed in order to
fit the sound of the way these alternate takes are presented...
raw, immediate, unvarnished, unpolished". The remastered stereo versions of the
album tracks for Highway 61 Revisited occur on the 18CD set as
follows: Like A Rolling Stone (CD4, track 4);
Tombstone Blues (CD5, track 11); It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To
Cry (CD5, track 15); From A Buick Six (CD6, track 5); Ballad Of A Thin Man (CD7,
track 19); Queen Jane Approximately (CD7, track 16); Highway 61 Revisited (CD6,
track 29); Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues (CD7, track 9); Desolation Row (CD8,
