The Traveling Wilburys on Volume One were Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Roy Orbison died on 6 Dec 1988 before the release of the single End Of The Line, and only his photograph is shown in the video of the song performed by the four surviving group members. The album tracks were added to this list later than the exclusive single tracks, which is why their R-numbers are higher. The US edition came in a "long box" - see below. For the reissue of this album in The Traveling Wilburys Collection with three bonus tracks, see Wilburys 2007.

Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP release: Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 7599-25796-1 (USA), 20 Oct 1988:
Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 7599-25796-1 (USA) - detail of rear, scan
by Marc Kuszel
The promo copy owned by Sergio Mariano Romay has stamped in golden letters (not easy to read) on the front sleeve at bottom left angle the following text: “Lent for Promotional Use Only. Any Sale or Unauthorized Transfer is Prohibited and Void Subject to Return Upon Demand by Owner. Acceptance of This Record Constitutes Agreement to the Above”. Otherwise the front and rear sleeves, insert and record labels are the same as those of the commercial release.
On both record labels a small letter "A" has been stamped/cut into the paper very near the central hole. The sleeve of this copy has "9 25796-1 TRAVELING WILBURYS VOLUME ONE WILBURY RECORDS" on the spine, and barcode "0 7599-25796-1 2" on the rear (as shown). The handwritten matrix numbers are quite complicated: Side 1 - (left to right) 1-25196-A-SH-2 OB-32859-SH2 (triangle) 22400 Future Disc 1-1, Side 2 - (left to right) 1-25196-B-SH2 OB-32860-SH2 Future Disc (triangle) 22400-X 1-3.
On the Side 2 record label all the songs are credited to The Traveling Wilburys and copyrighted "© 1988" to Ganga Distributors B.V. (George Harrison's company).

The 2016 LP release does not have the bonus tracks as on the CD release below and is dated 2007 (the date of the remastered release, see 2007). On the Side 2 record label the song copyrights are the same as the European 2007 release, which must have a US equivalent. Gone Gator Music is still misspelled "MUISC" at the bottom of the Side 2 listing. |

Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP releases, Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 925 796-1 (West Germany)/WX 224 (UK), 20 Oct 1988:
Wilbury Records/Warner Bros 925 796-1 (West Germany)/WX 224 (UK) - detail of
LP rear, photocopy by Paul Shenton
Marc Kuszel has two copies of the German release where the Side 1 label is the same as before but the Side 2 labels are the plain label variants as shown for Paul Shenton's copy. The records of both these copies have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - "R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-A", Side 2 - "R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-B"
Alex Ivanov has a copy sold in Hungary imported from West Germany by MMC Import. This copy has stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - "R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-AX H", Side 2 -" R/S Alsdorf 925796-1-BX H". MMC Import was founded in Hungary in 1990, so the copy was imported there after that. The Side 1 label is the same as the German release, but the Side 2 label is the plain label variant. MMC released their own version of Traveling Wilburys Volume Three in Hungary in 1990, see Wilburys 1990.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel, Alex Ivanov and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

Wilbury Records/Warner Bros/Tusk Music Company WBC 1652
(South Africa) - spine scan by Sergio Mariano Romay - "TRAVELLING
WILBURYS, UK spelling)
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy that is slightly different from Manuel's. At rear top right there is a record shop sticker showing a price of 24.99 Rand. At the bottom of the rear sleeve under "NELSON WILBURY" a number ("5") and a date ("17 11 88" - 17 Nov 1988") have been stamped. The spine text is “VOLUME ONE TRAVELLING WILBURYS WBC 1652” - the UK spelling of "TRAVELLING". The record has a standard printed inner sleeve and a paper inner sleeve, without any text and a central cut-out. The labels are slightly different because there is no reference to Tusk Music - in the circumference it now says "Manufactured and distributed by WEA Records (Pty) Ltd.". “217” is embossed in reverse on the Side 2 record label, to the right of the centre hole. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WBC 1652 – A, Side 2 - WBC 1652 – B.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - promo vinyl LP release: Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652 PRO (Zimbabwe), 1988; commercial vinyl LP release: Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652 (Zimbabwe), 1988:
Warner Bros/TEAL Record Company WBC 1652
(Zimbabwe) -
detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (compare with South African release
above - Tusk and Interpak logos obscured)
The sleeve is essentially identical to that of the South African album. The information at the bottom of the rear sleeve could create confusion: there is information of both releases, South African and Zimbabwean. The Tusk and Interpak logos (South African manufacturer and printer companies) are only partially obscured and the text "Marketed and distributed by Tusk Music Co." is still present on the lowest line. There are also the "Bardwell" logo (in very small letters, below the guitar on the left) and the text "Marketed and distributed by Gramma Records" (below the guitar on the right) The record has white Warner Bros labels even though this is not a promo. The labels of the actual promo record are also shown, they have "PROMOTION ONLY - NOT FOR SALE" below the "Manufactured by TEAL Record Company" text, and also a catalogue number of WBC 1652 PRO, printed twice on the labels.
Gerd Rundel has a sample copy of the WBC 1652 commercial release in a Gramma Records generic 12" card sleeve with a cut-out centre. The sleeve was also printed by Bardwell Printers. Side 2 of the sample copy has a purple stamp with "SAMPLE RECORD NOT FOR RESALE". The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WBC 1652-A-1, Side 2 - WBC 1652-B.

This record has the standard front with the catalogue number and WEA logo at top right. The rear sleeve has the tracklist in English with Spanish translations in small lettering and copyright text in Spanish. It also includes the usual double-sided insert with the catalogue number on the front. The side and top spines of the sleeve have the title, catalogue number and the text "Impreso en México" (Printed in Mexico). The record labels has white Warner Bros labels with titles in English and Spanish.

Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - promo and commercial vinyl LP releases, WEA/EMI-Odeón 80770 (Argentina), 1988:
The Argentinean release of this album was made by EMI-Odeón in Argentina for WEA. The song titles are translated into Spanish on the rear sleeve and on the record labels. "Heading For The Light" is translated here as "Caminando hacia la luz". This song title was translated as "Dirigiéndose hacia la luz" in the Peruvian Virrey EP, see Wilburys 1989.
The album sleeve and insert (both sides) of the promo copy shown are the same as those of the commercial release. There is nothing that identifies it as a promo copy. The record labels have a text printed in yellow that says: “VENTA PROHIBIDA – PROMOCIONAL [SALE FORBIDDEN – PROMOTIONAL]". Both records shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 25796-A, Side 2 - 25796-B.

Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP release: WEA 23(1031)00083 (Colombia), 1989:
The very rare Colombian edition of this album was made in Medellín, Colombia, by Sonolux S.A. on behalf of WEA Records. The front right-hand corners of the sleeves are rounded (see detailed front scans), which means the rear left-hand corners are rounded also. The front has a sticker of a mail order company with the text "Su buena música por catálogo. Círculo del Oyente [Your good music by mail order. Listener's Club]". The rear sleeve has the Warner Bros logo and Spanish text. The record has buff Warner Bros labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1-25196-A-SH-4 plus "Future Disc", Side 2 - 1-25196-B-SH-3.

The album includes a one-sided insert with notes in Czech. The record has orange WEA labels showing a price of Kcs.120. The copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - E 8969/A, Side 2 - E 8970/A.

Anfon P91 00223 (Russia) - front scan by Alex Ivanov (variant 1) |
These very collectable records with a unique sleeve are unofficial, so are
also listed in Questionable Releases. АнТроп (Anfon or Antrop) was a record company run by Andrei Tropillo.
The first two record labels have the flags of the new Russian republic,
which came into existence in 1991. The sleeve and the record labels are dated 1991, but Alex Ivanov says it was not in fact released until 1993. As can be seen there are several rear sleeve variations, brown, grey and dark grey. Manuel García Jara has a copy with alternate record labels, bought in Lithuania. These labels do not have the Russian flag. Manuel says the records with the labels without the Russian flag were sold in former republics of the Soviet Union such as the Baltic States, and the Russian flag was removed for political reasons. This copy has a dark grey rear sleeve. |

Cassette Releases
Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - stereo cassette release: Warner Bros/Wilbury Records 925 796-4 (Germany for Europe), 1988 (four variants):
This German release was sold throughout Europe, the copy shown was bought in the UK. The UK catalogue number is WX 224 C, the French catalogue number is WE 481. The cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text, there are no paper labels.
Paul Shenton has two copies with identical cassettes, but slightly different outside inserts and a common different inside insert. Manuel's outside insert (variant 1) has copyright information on two lines with "TELDEC Record Service GmbH" on the top line, "0" and "3" printed in small text on either side of the barcode, and on the spine "France" is in upper/lower case. The outside insert of Paul's first copy (variant 2) has copyright information on one line with "TELDEC Record Service GmbH" missing, "0" and "3" in small text missing from the barcode, while on the spine "France" is still in upper/lower case. The outside insert of Paul's second copy (variant 3) is identical to variant 2 except for one detail - "FRANCE" on the spine is now in upper case.
Paul's two inside inserts (variants 2 and 3) are the same, but have four lines of publishing credits added at the bottom of the centre column, missing from the inside insert of Manuel's copy (variant 1).
Paul's third copy has the same insert as variant 1 but a different cassette - it has the full catalogue number of "7599-25796-4" (as the barcode on the insert), not the shorter "925 796-4". The cassette shown is badly scratched, so copies poorly. I've called this variant 1A.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Paul Shenton for information and pictures.

Traveling Wilburys - "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - stereo cassette releases, Warner Bros 20039-4 (Uruguay), 1988:
The manufacturer is WEL S.A., a Uruguayan company represented by CUD (Uruguayan Chamber of Discs), who released Traveling Wilburys Volume Three in Uruguay as well as several CBS Dylan cassettes in the 1980s. The cassette is white with grey paper labels. Although the tracklisting on the insert is correct, the sides of the cassette are reversed so that the songs from Side 2 of the LP are on Side 1 and vice-versa. The cassette can be opened and has five screws on Side 2.
On the second copy the text "FONOGRAMA ES CULTURA PRODUCTOR FONOGRÁFICO WEL S.A. – Art. 79 Ley 13349. Imp. En FIMASA. Made in Uruguay” has been relocated to a different part of the insert. This cassette is again white, but this time the paper labels are also white (discoloured by the passage of time). The sides of the cassette are again reversed. The blue and black label text looks identical.

These releases have a white obi with brown, blue, black and yellow text (information from Hans Seegers). The initial 1988 release before the introduction of sales tax in Japan had an obi price of ¥2,500 (the "25 at the start of the catalogue number indicates the price). The second release in 1989 after the introduction of sales tax had an obi price of ¥2,348 (¥2,280 plus sales tax). Wil Gielen's 1988 copy

Wilbury Records/Warner Brothers 211 652-7 - front of pirated "Limited Edition", scan by John Gaylor |
As this CD was long deleted, several pirated releases appeared that looked genuine and featured "bonus tracks". One example was called the Traveling Wilburys Volume One Gold Edition and had the European catalogue number. The nine bonus tracks were lifted from the 12" singles (see Wilburys 1988) and a Traveling Wilburys demo tape that was leaked as a bootleg CD. Thanks to Paul S. Levine for information about this. Thanks to John Gaylor for scans of a "Limited Edition" numbered "211 652-7" that looks like a genuine promotional item, but which is in fact a pirated release. It contains all the songs from Volume One and Volume Three (see Wilburys 1990) with extended versions of Handle With Care, End Of The Line and Wilbury Twist. |
