CBS/Sony 28DP 1025 (1987) was the first CD release of this album in Japan. It had a dark-green, white, yellow, black and red obi in the "CBS Rock CD Classics 100 Folk Rock Series" with price ¥2,800. The release date on the rear insert is "O-8-26" (26 Aug 1987). After sales tax was introduced in Japan in 1989 the album was re-released with price ¥2,627 (¥2,550 before tax). Scans of this release required. Both releases had a 28-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese. Sony Records SRCS 6158 (1991) was the second CD release in Japan. It had a black, white and red obi in the "Nice Price Line 15" series with white and black text, price ¥1,800 (¥1,748 before tax), and release date "91-12-1" (1 Dec 1991). The front insert was a 4-page booklet in English and there was a second insert in English and Japanese that folded out. The CD is silver with black text with "DIDP 070097" below the catalogue number. The "DIDP" number (Digital Identification Popular) is a code used by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) on CDs pressed in Terre Haute, IN, or one of their other CD plants in the USA, from 1983 onwards (Classical CDs had "DIDC").
Scans of the original US CD release in a long box required!
Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy bought in Argentina with a "CBS INTERNATIONAL" sticker over the barcode on the rear, and a second sticker with a new barcode on the rear of the front insert.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding these comments by acclaimed audio engineer Steve Hoffman from his web-site: "I compared the first minute of track eight I Am A Lonesome Hobo with the SACD. IMO there is no doubt that the old cheapo Columbia CD kills the SACD in every way. Notice how the drums on the old CD are MORE lifelike than the SACD? Notice how the bass is actually better and the harp as well? You can hear the back wall of the studio in the old CD version and you cannot on the SACD. Notice how Bob Dylan sounds like a human person on the old CD and he sounds like a recording of a person on the SACD? Don't know what happened there but I'm just putting it out there that we all need to find a copy of the old disk if we love this wacky album! Make sure you match your levels when you compare the two. The old CD is about 4 db or so lower in volume."

Wil Gielen has a copy of
the late 1980s/early 1990s US CD release imported into Japan with an obi from the Shinseido record
store chain. The obi was added by the store to import US copies (which were
much cheaper than Japanese releases) to provide buyers with information in
Japanese. The front of the jewel case has a US “The Nice Price” sticker. The
CD is slightly different from the US copy above in that the "DIDP" number
underneath the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is missing.
The price on the obi of ¥1,408 is accompanied by Japanese characters meaning "Excluding
Tax", which means it was imported into Japan after the introduction of sales
tax in 1989. For a European CD release imported into Japan by

This release was on sale in Canada until replaced by the hybrid SA-CD
edition in 2003 (see below). The front insert is a single folded card with
the liner notes on the inside in three columns as oppose to the US release
above, which has them in two columns. The CD itself, with catalogue number CK 9604,
was manufactured in the USA, as there was at that time no Columbia CD
pressing plant in Canada. The rear insert has the catalogue number
"VCK-9604" on the spines. The copy bought by Moise Potié in the mid-1990s
has a different bar code on the rear insert and the CD has "MADE AT SMC"
(Sony Music Canada) to
the right of the centre hole. As can be seen, the "V" prefix in the Canadian catalogue number

The inserts of the 1980s release were
printed in Holland. The CD itself was imported from Japan and has
"Manufactured by CBS/Sony Inc. in Japan" on its rim to the right of the
catalogue number information. The late 1980s release now had a new catalogue number and a CD that was made in Austria. The CD is silver and red with black and white text. The 1990s album was in the Columbia budget "Nice Price" series, and could be obtained very cheaply. Derek Davies' copy has a 1991 "DYLAN ORIGINALS 30 YEARS ON COLUMBIA" Nice Price sticker, and a red CD tray. The front insert is an 8-page stapled booklet including credits and the original sleeve notes.

This is the 1990s Austria for Europe release imported into Japan with an
obi from the Shinseido record store chain. The obi was added by the store to
import US or European copies (which were much cheaper than Japanese releases) to provide
buyers with information in Japanese. Inserts, disc and matrix number the
same as Derek Davies’ copy. The obi price is ¥1,480 (¥1,437 plus sales tax).
The Japanese text below "Nice Price" on the obi
means "Direct Import". "EGR" stands for "Ever Green Record"
(it should be "Evergreen"). For a US CD release imported

The second CD release has "CBS" on the rear insert and "Columbia" on the CD itself. It was on sale until replaced in 2004. This release was also available in a Sony BMG double pack with Nashville Skyline, this time with the 2004 remastered release of that album, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2000s. Stuart's alternate 2000s release has a CD made in Australia but the inserts were made in Holland. |

This gold CD in the "Gold Series" was released on 6 Jul 2018. The artwork identical to the 2000s releases, still with "CBS", but the bar code is now different. The new bar code number "190758669328" is on the spine in place of "CDCBS 63252". The CD itself is identical to the 2000s release in layout, still with catalogue number "CDCBS 63252", but the disc is now gold. It is one of 12 Dylan releases in the Gold Series. |

This 1992 European CD release came in a 3CD boxed set with Blonde On Blonde and Self Portrait. The CDs were all made in Austria. This release has the same catalogue number of 463359 2 as the European release exported to Japan above on the inserts, but the CD itself has the boxed set number of 471621 2.

This release was made in R.S.A. (Republic of South Africa) by Sony Music/Columbia. The inserts were printed by Artone Press. It has a single folded card as the front insert and is dated 1996 on the rear insert and the CD.

| This release is housed in a three-panel digipak and contains
both a CD version and an SA-CD stereo version on the disc. There is no booklet. The outside of the
digipak has an unpublished picture of Bob from 1968. The inside of the
digipak includes Bob's sleeve notes. The SA-CD design reproduces the Columbia US "360º
SOUND" stereo vinyl label used in 1968. The copy illustrated was sourced from Canada, and has the same non-album-specific sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap as the one illustrated for the 2003 SA-CD release of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. |

There is an 20-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese, as well as a double-sided hybrid SA-CD insert in Japanese. The copy shown is a promo, with a yellow numbered promo sticker on the rear of the digipak, and the text "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centre of the CD itself.

This release at mid-price is in a standard jewel case and consists of the remastered CD layer only of the 2003 hybrid SA-CD release above. The Japanese release comes in a card sleeve reproducing the LP sleeve with a top obi. Both the promo and the commercial releases have the "DYLAN ALIVE '04" silver sticker with black text on the cellophane sleeve.
Wil Gielen's copy shown is a promo, with a numbered promo sticker on the rear of the card sleeve. It also has "SAMPLE LOANED" in red in the clear centre of the CD itself. The obi has price ¥1,890 (¥1,800 before tax) and release date "04-8-18" (18 Aug 2004). The original release date is shown as "67-12-27" (27 Dec 1967 - disputed by fans, see top of page) and the withdrawal date as "05-2-17" (17 Feb 2005). There is an insert which folds out to a larger size.

This release is on a Blu-spec CD, an audio-only disc which is presumably
intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format, currently sold in Japan
only. The copy shown is still
sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The
release date is shown as "09-8-26" (26 Aug 2009), the original release date
as "67-12-27" (27 Dec 1967) and the withdrawal date as "10-2-25" (25 Feb
2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK8" plus "DISC 9" (the numbers are now out of step because Blonde On Blonde has two CDs, "DISC 7" and "DISC 8"). The CDs are different in detail, the US John Wesley Harding CD has catalogue number "88691924312D9", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-09". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The first part, called Dylan '60s, will be released by Sony Music Japan on 26 Mar 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs, which are numbered SICP 30471 to SICP 30481 (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, not included in the US and European sets, is included here as SICP 30479). Side Tracks, to be released at the same time, is SICP 30519-20. All the sleeves will have orange top obis similar to the 2004 Japanese release in card sleeves. The 2013 remastered John Wesley Harding will be SICP 30480 - more details will be added when available (this album was not one of those released in Blu-spec CD2 format in 2013). |

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding this new limited edition stereo hybrid SA-CD release. It comes in a folded card sleeve with an insert. The limited edition number on the rear of the sleeve has been obscured.
