Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead - Dylan & The Dead
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 07 October, 2023.
Original US stereo album, Columbia OC 45056 (LP), OCT 45056 (MC), CK 45056 (CD), 9 Feb 1989 (bobdylan.com lists it incorrectly as 18 Jan 1988) This release was much delayed, the concerts with The Grateful Dead took place in Jul 1987. A bootleg version with a very different track selection circulates amongst Dylan fans, supposedly compiled by Jerry García of the Grateful Dead (copy shown on left is Moonlight Records ML 9636, 1996). Bob is reported to have selected tracks that had not had live versions released before over tracks with musical merit! Thanks to Lars M. Banke and Manuel García Jara for information that Dylan & The Dead was not released in Yugoslavia, South Africa or Zimbabwe. |

Bob's live performance of Friend Of The Devil by Robert Hunter, Jerry García and John Dawson live from Club Rio, Las Vegas, NV, 1 Mar 1999, is included on the Grateful Dead Records USA tribute compilation album Stolen Roses: Songs Of The Grateful Dead, see 2000. Jerry Garcia played many Dylan covers over his career, and some by The Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band and other Garcia collaborations are collected on the 2005 Rhino Europe 2CD compilation Garcia Plays Dylan, see Honourable Mentions - Covers (Misc). | ||
Bob has also collaborated with the Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter on Silvio and The Ugliest Girl In The World, both from Down In The Groove in 1988 and all but two of the songs on 2009's Together Through Life. |

The commercial copy shown is sealed, with a black sticker with red and white text promoting three of the live tracks. The test pressing comes in a white card promo sleeve with a front sticker with black typed text in Spanish. The record has blank Discos CBS labels with typed text and promo stickers, and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 70077/A, Side 2 - 70077/B.
The commercial front sleeve has at top right the Columbia logo with two catalogue numbers: the Argentinean (70.077) and European (1-463381) and also has added yellow text "BOB DYLAN AND THE GRATEFUL DEAD". The rear sleeve shows the picture of the wagon but in monochrome. The song titles are translated into Spanish. At bottom rear is the Columbia logo plus the two catalogue numbers; at bottom centre is a circle with the legend “La copia de cassettes no autorizada está matando la musica grabada. Además, es de inferior calidad. CBS, la compañía de la música [The unauthorised copying of cassettes is killing recorded music. Also, it is of inferior quality. CBS, the music company]”; At bottom right is the information that this LP is also released on cassette, with the catalogue number "170.077", see below. Lars M. Banke has noticed that on the rear sleeve Queen Jane Approximately is listed as “Queen Anne Approximately”, but is correct on the Side 1 label.
The record labels are orange with Columbia logos in a ring, but very poorly printed, so that “INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA [MADE IN ARGENTINA]” in the circumference text is impossible to read. The song titles are again translated into Spanish. The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 70.077/A. Side 2 - 70.077/B. At this time, with vinyl losing the long play battle to compact disc in Argentina, these very limited editions were of poor quality: the vinyl was very thin (only 115 gms) and the sleeves were thin and brittle. That’s why it is very difficult to find copies in good condition after 25 years.
Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

tape scan by Sergio Mariano Romay ("CBS")
This Columbia cassette release comes in a black plastic "CBS" outer case, and also has "CBS" on the leader tape. It has a folded insert with the Columbia logo, which is also on both sides of the cassette. As on the vinyl release, the song titles are translated into Spanish on both the insert and the cassette, with the English titles on the inside of the insert only. The cassette itself is buff, with red text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels.
Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Grateful Dead - "Dylan & The Dead" - stereo cassette release, CBS 8329-4 (Uruguay), 1989:
CBS 8329-4 (Uruguay) - cassette front scan by Sergio Mariano Romay |
This CBS cassette release comes in a hinged case with "Sony Music" on the back. The insert is blank on the inside. The cassette is off-white with buff paper labels. Grateful is misspelled "GREATFUL" on the insert and on both sides of the cassette. On this copy the original owner covered the CBS logo on the spine of the insert with a sticker which has since been removed. I don't yet have details of a vinyl release from Uruguay. |

Bob Dylan/The Grateful Dead - "Dylan & The Dead" - promo and commercial CD releases, CBS/Sony 25DP 5402 (Japan), 1 Mar 1989:
CBS/Sony 25DP 5402 (Japan) - front with original obi, scan by Wil Gielen |
This promo CD has a black, red and white obi with yellow, white and black text. The release date is shown as "E-3-1" (1 Mar 1989) - see International Album Releases (Regular Albums) for information on Japanese alphabetic year codes. The original obi has the price ¥2,500 without sales tax. The replacement obi shows two prices: ¥2,280 without sales tax and ¥2,348 including sales tax (sales tax was introduced in Japan in mid-1989). Copies of CBS/Sony 25DP5402 with the ¥2,500 obi are therefore much rarer. This was the last Japanese Dylan album to be released in the "25DP" series because the catalogue numbering system was changed after the introduction of sales tax, while at the same time regular CD prices were reduced from ¥2,500 to ¥2,348 to stimulate sales. The copy shown is a promo, with a promo panel on the rear insert and Japanese characters indicating a promo on the clear centre of the CD. The front insert was a 32-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese. Thanks to Hans Seegers for initial information and to Wil Gielen for further information and scans. |

Sony Music SICP 2014 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Wil Gielen |
The four 2009 remasters were released in Japan not in digipaks but in mini-LP cardboard sleeves reproducing the US initial release with the original CBS/Sony Japan obi. In this case that is the Columbia OC 45056 sleeve and CBS/Sony 25DP 5402 obi. There is an 8-page stapled booklet in English, a 20-page stapled booklet in English and Japanese, and the CD is in a paper inner sleeve. There is a black sticker which is not attached to the shrink-wrap but loose inside the sleeve. Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and to Wil Gielen for further information and scans. |

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK30" plus "DISC 34". The CDs are different in detail, the US Dylan And The Dead CD has catalogue number "88691924312D34", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-34". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.
For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
