Mark Howard’s TOOM Notebook

After our conversation for our S01.E01 Time Out Of Mind 25th Anniversary Event, Engineer Mark Howard generously shared a few photos of pages from the notebook he used while working on recording the album.

As he explained, he used the book to keep track of the recording process – what was on which tape. In part this enabled him to quickly find specific tape segments for playback or editing. They also reveal a bit about what was recorded, by whom, during these sessions.

The book itself shows how much work was put in during these sessions, with tabs mark created for each song the worked on. ‘Fanatic’ members can hear the interview in the event replay.

Not Dark Yet

Here we see two different pages for takes of Not Dark Yet.

Highlands

Here we see two different pages for takes of Highlands. The photo was unfortunately not provided in very high resolution, so some detective work remains. This was a leaf fold of pages taken as separate photographs then spliced together, upsampled from the original to improve clarity.

We see here there were two complete takes of the song, and (1) is 17:20 and (2) is 14:22 (upper right side of right page, next to the circled (1) and (2). Clearly (1) is the released version we all know.

Above on each page we see Mark has noted the tape timing and words from the lyrics – he said in our interview he tried to write down the first and last word of each line. He also said that the unreleased version was ‘completely different lyrics’ so can discover get some of what is in the version we haven’t heard? Let’s see what the Dylan detectives out there can make of it.
