Live Lyric Changes in the Songs of Time Out Of Mind

Bob Dylan plays with words. Even his most famous songs, years after release, are subject to rewrites, modifications, or additions. Sometimes constantly, other times just on one rare occasion.

Dylyricus is a fan who specializes in studying how Bob Dylan alters his lyrics in live concerts. As his contribution to #TOOM25, he’s taken a look at the songs of Time Out Of Mind and how Dylan has presented them in concert over the last 25 years.

]The songs of Time Out Of Mind have been performed almost 2,900 times so far. Below are some of the more prominent or interesting ways that Dylan has modified the lyrics from their original album versions.

So far changes have been documented for:

  • Love Sick
  • Make You Feel My Love
  • Standing In The Doorway
  • Tryin’ To Get To Heaven

Standing In The Doorway

More than 12 years after leaving this song behind back in 2005, Dylan performed it in Stockholm in 2017, and brought with him some unexpected new lyrics. It has not been performed again since.

Trying To Get To Heaven

My passion is to seek out all notable lyric variations for particular songs. Sometimes this task is more than one person can reasonably tackle, and so I tried crowdsourcing the listening exercise in order to catch as many changes as possible.

With huge thanks to the several among the Dylan Twitter community who answered the call, we discovered a whole range of interesting changes. Including this apparently unique and intriguing variant, which escaped even the good folks behind The Lyrics book:

I set out all the captured changes here, opting for a manuscript style layout. By the way, if you would like to participate in the next crowdsourcing of changes, feel free to reach out @dylyricus on twitter or dylyricus on Expecting Rain!
