The Bootleg Series Vol. 6 - Bob Dylan Live 1964: Concert At Philharmonic Hall
Note the top line on the promo copy has "Volume 6"
whereas the top line on the commercial copies has "Vol. 6"!
This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections. For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs. |

Final front design, 2004 |
US release (2CD set), Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882, 30 Mar 2004. Although initial information was that it would be released as a two disc hybrid SA-CD set in CD stereo, SA-CD stereo and SA-CD 5.1 surround sound, this much postponed set was finally been released in stereo only, although an SA-CD version must have been created by Columbia but not released after all. All I Really Want To Do from this album was included on a 6-track SA-CD sampler handed out at the Home Entertainment Show in San Francisco, CA, in Jun 2003 - see 2003. As this is in both SA-CD stereo and SA-CD 5.1 surround sound as well as stereo it is now a rarity. The full SA-CD version of the album in both stereo and 5.0 surround sound was released by Audio Fidelity as a numbered limited edition in 2016. Spanish Harlem Incident from this album was made available for download from the Apple iTunes Online Music Store in May 2003, see Online Performances. This much-bootlegged concert was recorded live at New York Philharmonic Hall, 31 Oct 1964. It's known to collectors as the "Halloween Mask" concert, because Bob says at one point "It's Halloween, and I'm wearing my Bob Dylan mask!" The source of this Columbia album is not the same as the various bootlegs that circulate, and in far better quality. Joan Baez guested at the concert and appears on four tracks on the album. Her performance of Silver Dagger, on which Bob played guitar and harmonica, is incomplete on all circulating tapes, so is included here in full for Dylan fans for the first time. |

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD-R promo set, Columbia (catalogue number?) (USA), Jan 2004:
Photograph found on eBay by Jean-Pol Hiernaux |
This promo set is housed in two clear single CD jewel cases. The front
inserts look as if they're from a PC printer. Harold Lepidus informs me that early promo copies start with a stage announcement but lter promo copies as below and the commercial release do not. Because this is a rarity, these early copies, which have no artwork and are on CD-Rs, are also listed in 2004. Various song introductions which occur throughout the performance and Bob's introduction of Joan Baez are separate CD tracks here but they're merged with the songs on the later promos and the commercial release. The stage announcement (followed by applause and a short silence) is: "Before we begin, I have one announcement to make. (Applause.) It’s two fold. There’s no smoking in the house, and absolutely no pictures, please!" Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding these on eBay. |

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD promo set, Columbia SAMPCD 13806 2 (Europe), Mar 2004:
Paul Shenton points out that the set was supposed to have a 52-page booklet (the commercial booklet is 56 pages), but did not have one (it could not have fit inside the card sleeve). The title on the outer and inner sleeves is "Volume 6" rather than "Vol. 6" on the commercial release. The song titles on the sleeves and discs of CDs 1 and 2 are the same as those of the commercial releases except that I Don't Believe You (song 9 on CD1) is missing "(She Acts Like We Never Have Met)".
Thanks to Hervé from France and Paul Shenton for information and to Gerd Rundel for scans.

Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882 (USA) - front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Gil Lamont |
This release is in a slipcase with a 56-page booklet including an essay by Sean Wilentz, who attended the 1964 show, and many previously unpublished photographs. The booklet front uses the "Large Selection of Masks" picture by Sandy Speiser. The CDs are in a single-width jewel case which has a folded front insert. The colour tints of the photographs are as shown - only the ones on the inside of the front insert and the reverse of the rear insert are in true black and white. Gil Lamont's copy has a yellow sticker with completely different text from the UK orange sticker below. This copy also has an insert advertising the MTV Unplugged DVD (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 1) and earlier releases in The Bootleg Series. Gil's sharp eyes have noticed a typo on the reverse of this insert - Vol. 4 of The Bootleg Series is listed as "Live 1964" instead of "Live 1966"! Jack from Canada's copy also has a sticker advertising the MTV Unplugged DVD release. |

There is US copyright text on the CDs, the rear of slipcase and the rear insert. There is no circumference text on the top of the US CDs. There is a small number "86882" at the bottom of the front insert, also on the reverse of the rear insert and the rear of the booklet.
Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882 (Canada):
The slipcase and booklet of the Canadian release are the same as the US release. The front insert, rear insert and CDs have differences:
- the rear of the front insert has additional "Made in
Canada" below the number "86882" at the bottom
- there is Canadian copyright text on the rear insert
and "Made in Canada" at the bottom of the CDs.

The catalogue number is Columbia/Legacy 5123582000, manufactured in Australia by Sony Music (Australia). The inserts, slipcase and the booklet have "www.sonymusic.co.au" as well as "www.sonymusic.co.nz". The actual CDs do not say where manufactured but have the Columbia/Legacy 5123582000 catalogue number on them. The only minor difference between the Australian and New Zealand releases is that the sticker on the New Zealand slipcase is transparent, stuck directly to the slipcase with the text below."

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD set, Sony Music Direct MHCP 248-9 (Japan), 7 Apr 2004:
Sony Music Direct MHCP
248-9 - bottom of slipcase with promo sticker, scan by Wil Gielen
Wil Gielen's promo copy has a numbered promo sticker on the bottom of the slipcase and text "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centre of each CD.
The second booklet contains:
The lyrics to all of the songs (incl. "Silver Dagger") in Japanese and English, and even including all of Dylan's spoken introductions to the songs. For example the entry for I Don't Believe You starts with "Oh, God. Here's the second verse of it. Hey, does anybody know the first verse of this song ? (I can't understand) Oh, I can't understand....".
A two-page advert for the 15 SA-CD releases
Text in Japanese, presumably a commentary about the album.
Thanks to Jens Winter, Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen for further information and scans.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88697732912 (Europe), Nov 2010:
This "budget" release made in Austria has only the two audio CDs in a slimline 2CD jewel case. There is no slipcase. It is dated 2010 and the CDs and inserts have the "Sony Music" logo.
Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans.
"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2 SA-CD set, Audio Fidelity AFZ5 230 (USA), Mar 2016:
Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information that this release also includes the stage announcement preceding The Times They Are A-Changin' which was previously found only on early promo copies of this set in 2004. Because this is a rarity, this release is also listed in 2004. However, Bowie Hurde informs me that some banter from Bob Dylan included on the original Columbia/Legacy release has been deleted. Dylan's introduction to Gates Of Eden “This is called a sacrilegious lullaby in D minor. That is the D minor. No in all seriousness….” has been completely removed. This is apparently missing from the regular stereo and the stereo SA-CD layers, but it is included on the 5.0 surround sound mix. This appears to have been an error on behalf of the Sony Music team that supplied Audio Fidelity with the original tapes, but it is unlikely to be corrected.
The discs were made in Austria and the set also has the Columbia catalogue number 88875181332. It includes a 56-page stapled booklet and a folded insert.
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Gerd Rundel and André Wilbers for information and scans.
