Rare Bob Dylan Film Program to Visit New York

Since The Bob Dylan Center opened in Tulsa OK in May of 2022 that’s been the place to go to see and hear a huge number of rarities that you just can’t find anywhere else. The center is a wonderful place that offers a mind-blowing experience with displays and rarities and photos and audio and video and interactives, and more.

But Tulsa OK is not exactly conveniently located. It’s a wonderful town (I’ve now been four times) but the simple fact is it will take many Dylan fans a long time to get there and many will never make it. (Although I highly recommend you make the effort to do so.)

Last year, the center released Mixing Up The Medicine, a staggering phone-book sized catalog that generously and lavishly shares photos of many of the treasures from The Bob Dylan Archives. (Our review)

The book in no way replaces a visit, but it does make some of the treasures there accessible, and share a bit of the archival research work that they’ve done. (It’s available now at a great price so grab a copy if you haven’t yet.)

But Bob Dylan is a singer and a performer. The rarities most of us want to experience most urgently can’t be shared in a book.

In Tulsa there is a small theater called The Darby Family Screening Room where they play about 45 minutes of extremely rare Bob Dylan video on a loop, and Center visitors can just sit and enjoy it as many times through as you’d like. The playlist has changed a little over time, but it includes rare interviews and a great set of stunning restored performance video from throughout Dylan’s career.

Last year, Center Director Steven Jenkins started taking this collection of rare Dylan video on the road. He brought it to New York for a night, and earlier this year there were events in San Francisco CA, San Rafael CA and Portland OR.

Back to New York City

Next week, Steve is back for four separate nights of rare Bob Dylan video in the New York area. Three of those showings will present the original clip collection, and one of them will share a new set of rare Dylan video. Details and ticket links are below.

While this is a bonanza for New York Dylan fans, those in other places can take heart as Steve tells me that he’s already booking dates in other states for the remainder of this year into next, and has plans/hopes to take the show international in the near future.

In advance of his visit, Steve shared a note:

“While our home base of operations will always be here at the Dylan Center in Tulsa, I really enjoy taking the show on the road with these film programs. The screenings bring together multiple generations of Dylan fans, and the audience Q&As have been a lot of fun. Last year’s event at the Jacob Burns Film Center was a big hit, so the team there kindly invited me back for another deep dive into the Dylan Archive. This will be an all-new program of performance clips, including an acoustic take on “Tombstone Blues” from the Newport Folk Festival and an intense version of “Isis” from the Rolling Thunder Review.

The screenings at The New School, Cinema Arts Centre and Nitehawk Cinema will feature the program from last year’s Jacob Burns event. My favorite among these selections is the extraordinarily riveting performance of “Cold Irons Bound,” with Dylan embodying his Jack Fate persona from Masked and Anonymous. The camera never moves but I can’t stay still. New Yorkers, see you soon.”

I was fortunate to attend last year’s performance at The Jacob Burns Film Center, and the thrill of seeing these excellent clips (some of which the more industrious of you will have seen before) on a theater sized screen with excellent sound, inclined seating, and a rapturous (dead silent) crowd just couldn’t be any better. Don’t you dare miss it.
