The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert! (2016)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

3CD release: Sony Music SICP 5302-4 (Japan), 31 Mar 2017. The vinyl releases to be sold in Japan will be imported from the EU.

This triple album (3CD/3LP/download) contains 30 more Frank Sinatra standards continuing the theme of the previous albums Shadows In The Night and Fallen Angels. The title could be a homage to Frank's 1980 Reprise 3LP set Trilogy: Past Present Future shown on the right, each album of which has a separate title like the three albums of Bob's set. However, Andreas Volkert has researched the playing cards depicted on the cover of Fallen Angels and discovered they were made by the famous playing card manufacturer Andrew Dougherty and called "Chinese Dragon Back No. 81". Andreas has now discovered that Andrew Dougherty also created in 1876 a set of playing cards in which a miniature card was placed in the top left and bottom right corners of the cards called... "Triplicate"! The original 1876 "Triplicate" cards were reissued in 2014. It's very possible this could be another source of inspiration for Bob's album title.

29 of these 30 songs were probably recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA, in Feb 2016, see the album page for Fallen Angels.

Frank Sinatra/Harry James - 1939 (Columbia)

It’s Funny To Everyone But Me (Jack Lawrence) was Frank’s second single from Columbia single in 1939, recorded with Harry James and his Orchestra, and was later collected on The Complete Harry James And His Orchestra Featuring Frank Sinatra (Columbia/Legacy, 1995)

Frank Sinatra/Tommy Dorsey - 1940-42 (RCA Victor)

Trade Winds (Charles Tobias/Cliff Friend) was recorded by Frank with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, released on a Victor single in 1940, and later appeared on the 6LP set The Dorsey/Sinatra Sessions 1940-1942 (RCA Victor, 1978). The same material has now been released on CD in several sets. Imagination (Johnny Burke/Jimmy van Heusen) was another song recorded by Frank with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 1940, which later appeared on The Dorsey/Sinatra Sessions 1940-1942 in 1978 (see above) and as a new recording on I Remember Tommy... (Reprise, 1961). Stardust (Hoagy Carmichael/Michael Parish) was recorded by Frank with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra for a Victor single in 1941 and included on The Dorsey/Sinatra Sessions 1940-1942 in 1978 (see above).

Braggin’ (Henry Manners/Jimmy Shirl/Robert Marko) was recorded by Tony Pastor and his Orchestra for Bluebell Records in 1941 - shown left is a US War Department reissue, no details of a recording by Frank have yet been found!

Columbia - 1943-52

Stormy Weather (Harold Arlen/Ted Koehler), now released by Bob on Triplicate, was also recorded at the 2014 Shadows In The Night sessions, as was the still unreleased Didn’t He Ramble (W C Handy/Robert Cole). Stormy Weather was released as a Columbia single by Frank in 1945, and later appeared on the 1959 Capitol album No One Cares, see below.

These Foolish Things (Jack Strachey/Eric Maschwitz) from The Voice Of Frank Sinatra (Columbia, 1946). Like Songs By Sinatra Volume 1, this was a collection of four Columbia 78RPM records in a slipcase from 1946 that was reissued as a 10" LP in 1948. You Go to My Head (J. Fred Coots/Haven Gillespie) was also The Voice Of Frank Sinatra and a new recording appeared in 1960 on Nice ‘N’ Easy (see above). The packaging of the Dylan 3LP set (see picture at top of this page|) is designed to copy the design of these sets of 78 rpm records, which were the first to be called record albums, because of their similarity to photo albums.
How Deep Is The Ocean? (Irving Berlin) was contained on Songs By Sinatra Volume 1, a collection of four Columbia 78RPM records in a slipcase from 1947 that was reissued as a 10" LP in 1950.
But Beautiful (Johnny Burke/Jimmy van Heusen) was a Columbia single by Frank from 1948, collected on The Best Of The Columbia Years 1943-1952 (Columbia/Legacy, 1995). Frank also performed the song live on his second mid-1960s TV special, A Man And His Music Part II, in 1966, which can be bought on DVD.
Why Was I Born? (Oscar Hammerstein II/Jerome Kern) first appeared on Dedicated To You (Columbia, 1950). Like Songs By Sinatra Volume 1 and The Voice Of Frank Sinatra, this was a collection of four Columbia 78RPM records in a slipcase from 1950 that was released as a 10" LP at the same time.

Capitol - 1953-61

Songs For Young Lovers, Frank's first Capitol album from 1953, contains his version of My One And Only Love (Guy Wood/Robert Mellin).
The classic Jan 1957 Capitol album Close To You by Frank Sinatra with Nelson Riddle and the Hollywood String Quartet includes P.S. I Love You (not the Beatles song, but the 1934 song written by Gordon Jenkins and Johnny Mercer, first recorded by Rudy Vallee) and I Couldn’t Sleep A Wink Last Night (Jimmy McHugh/Harold Adamson). The CD reissue includes There’s A Flaw In My Flue (Johnny Burke/Jimmy van Heusen) as a bonus track.
I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan (Howard Dietz/Arthur Schwartz) comes from A Swingin’ Affair! (Capitol, Jun 1957)
Another classic Capitol album Where Are You?, from Sep 1957, by Frank Sinatra with Gordon Jenkins, includes Where Are You?, The Night We Called It A Day and Autumn Leaves, released on Shadows In The Night. It also includes Maybe You'll Be There from Fallen Angels and Where Is the One? (Edwin Finckel/Alec Wilder) from this triple album.
Day In, Day Out (Johnny Mercer/Rube Bloom) first appeared on Come Dance With Me (Capitol, Jan 1959)
On 4 Jun 2016 at Woodinville, WA, Bob premiered yet another Sinatra song, I Could Have Told You, recorded by Frank in 1953, also to be released by Bob on Triplicate. I Could Have Told You was a Capitol single from 1954 (B-side of Don't Worry About Me), and a Mar 1959 recording of the song was released as a bonus track on the 1991 CD release of Frank's Jul 1959 Capitol album No One Cares.

No One Cares also contains Stormy Weather (see above) and Here's That Rainy Day (Johnny Burke/Jimmy van Heusen). There is a mystery about the song writing credits for I Could Have Told You - it is credited in the Japanese booklet below to Carl Sigman (lyrics) and Jimmy van Heusen (music), but to Carl Sigman (lyrics) and Arthur Williams (music) on Frank's 1954 single. On the 1991 Sinatra No One Cares CD, where it appears as a bonus track, it's credited as in the Japanese booklet to Carl Sigman and Jimmy van Heusen. According to Derek Barker, Bob's people credited the song writers of all Bob's Triplicate cover versions on MCPS in the UK in late March, but they only gave credit for this song to Carl Sigman (who definitely wrote the lyrics).

Nice 'N' Easy (Capitol, Jul 1960) contains Frank's versions of That Old Feeling (Sammy Fain/Lew Brown) and You Go To My Head (J. Fred Coots/Haven Gillespie). It also includes She's Funny That Way, recorded by Bob in 2018 as He's Funny That Way for the LGBT-supporting Columbia/Legacy EP Universal Love - Wedding Songs Reimagined, see 2018.
Sentimental Journey (Les Brown/Ben Homer/Bud Green) first appeared on Come Swing With Me (Capitol, Jul 1961)
Point Of No Return, Frank's last Capitol album from 1962, contains Frank's versions of As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld, from "Casablanca"), Somewhere Along The Way (Sammy Gallop/Kurt Adams) and When The World Was Young (Johnny Mercer/Angele Marie Therese Vannier/M. Philippe-Gerard).

Reprise - 1961-81

The Concert Sinatra (Reprise, 1963) contains Frank's version of This Nearly Was Mine (Oscar Hammerstein II/Richard Rodgers) from the musical "South Pacific" as was Some Enchanted Evening, from a 1949 Columbia single and later on Frank Sinatra Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein, recorded by Bob for Shadows In The Night.

The Best Is Yet to Come (Carolyn Leigh/Cy Coleman) comes from It Might As Well Be Swing (Reprise, 1964) by Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Quincy Jones.

Thanks to Fred Muller for news that Bob recorded a video to mark Tony Bennett's 90th birthday at the WorkPlay Theater, Birmingham, AL, on Friday 28 Oct 2016. The video was part of an NBC TV special, "Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet to Come" broadcast on 20 Dec 2016, which also included performances by Aretha Franklin, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and others. Bob couldn't attend the actual celebration, which was filmed at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, on 15 Sep 2016, but wished to be included, so he performed and filmed an unidentified song with his band at WorkPlay, with a technical crew and gear brought in for the occasion. The song turned out to be Once Upon A Time. Once Upon A Time, written by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, was recorded by Frank Sinatra for his 1965 Reprise album September Of My Years. Once Upon A Time will also be released on Triplicate, as will two more tracks from September Of My Years, It Gets Lonely Early (Jimmy van Heusen/Sammy Cahn) and the title track of the album (Jimmy van Heusen/Sammy Cahn). The WorkPlay Theater version of Once Upon A Time (R-1905) has been added to Online Performances (Other).
Thanks to Aaron Derfel for information about this 2017 2CD release from Japan, Oldays Records ODR 6396-97, which is a compilation of Sinatra recordings with the title Love In Triplicate in the same typeface as Bob's Triplicate album. The forty songs on the two CDs are all ones that have been covered by Bob on Triplicate (some have more than one version)! There is also a 2018 European 2LP set, Vinyl Passion VP 80774, called The Standards Bob Sang! These Sinatra recordings are presumably out of copyright.

Thanks to "Sonny Boy McFitzson", Éamonn Ó Catháin and Derek Barker for information. Song writers and details of all Sinatra recordings found with thanks at sinatra.wikia.com.

The records have original US Columbia "Magic Notes" style labels in dark red with gold text. "BOB DYLAN" is missing from the labels. Inside the card pockets they are housed in dark brown paper inner sleeves, also with cut-outs. There is a fold-out 12" booklet glued to the reverse of the front sleeve. For some bizarre reason, none of the song composers listed above are credited in the booklet! There is also a voucher with a code to download the 30 tracks - the code in the rear panel has been obscured.

The US Standard Edition 3LP release comes in a wide sleeve that holds three 180gm LPs and a four page 12" insert. There is a voucher with a code (removed) to download the album tracks of the album. The US voucher has two differences from the European voucher below: the validity date on the rear is shown as "3/31/2018" (American style) and the catalogue number at the bottom is "88985413511-I1". The record labels are the same as those of the US Deluxe Edition.

Columbia/Sony Music 88985413501 (Europe) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel
The US release has been pressed in the USA, and the European release has been pressed in Europe. Éamonn Ó Catháin reports that the European discs are reputedly of superior quality to the American discs, which ironically means that the discs of the Europe Standard Edition are in better quality than those of the Deluxe Edition sold in Europe!

This set comes in a regular wide sleeve, also made in the EU, which holds all three 180gm LPs and a four page 12" insert. There is also a voucher with a code to download the 30 tracks - the code in the rear panel has been obscured. The European voucher has two differences from the US voucher above: the validity date on the rear is shown as "31.3.2018" (European style) and the catalogue number at the bottom is "88985413501-I1". The Japanese 3CD release has a wrap-around obi with release date: "17.3.31" (31 Mar 2017) and price ¥4,000 plus tax = ¥4,320. The sticker with "Nobel Laureate in Literature" in gold has been attached to all new Japanese releases since The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert!. The purple text on the obi says: "The answer? I'm gonna keep on singing." The digipak is a glossy reddish purple just like the 3LP sleeve, but looks much darker in scans. The attached booklet on the reverse of Bob's portrait has Tom Piazza's essay on Triplicate, only in Japanese, strangely not also in English. A 74-page Japanese booklet is placed on CD1. It has English lyrics and the translations, plus liner notes in two parts; the first by Heckel Sugano is about Bob and the rumour that Bob was creating something new with Daniel Lanois in Dec 2016. The second liner notes by Kenta Hagiwara are about the specific versions of the songs Bob has recorded on Triplicate. He has in-depth knowledge about old-time Americana music like Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams or Buddy Holly. The CD1, 2 and 3 header design on lyrics page is unique - this is a parody of "360 SOUND" in a straight shape which can't be seen elsewhere.

All the song writers are credited in the Japanese booklet, unlike the vinyl and US/European releases, where they are not credited. I Could Have Told You is credited to Carl Sigman and Jimmy van Heusen in the booklet, but is credited to Carl Sigman and Arthur Williams on Frank Sinatra's original 1953 single above. See above for comments.

"Triplicate" - 3CD set, Columbia/Sony Music 88985413492 (Brazil), 31 Mar 2017.

Columbia/Sony Music 88985413492 (Brazil) - front of digipak, scan by Izidio Filho
This 3CD set again comes in a very dark maroon four panel fold out digipak with an attached booklet on the inside left hand side. Both the digipak and the CDs this time were made in Brazil. The Brazilian discs are numbered 88985413492-RD1/-RD2/-RD3. The rear of the digipak has what looks like a record store inventory sticker on the shrink-wrap at bottom right, missing from the rear detail scan below, which has the new Sony Music logo on the left.

Yet again, none of the song composers listed above are credited in the booklet! The artist name "BOB DYLAN" is again missing from each of the CDs, which again have an original US Columbia "Magic Notes" style in dark red with gold text.
