This page is an attempt to catalogue every variant style of CBS UK record label from 1962 to the early 1990s. It is still incomplete. Descriptions of the labels are the same as on the album and singles pages from which they come, and therefore vary considerably (this page may allow the labels to be dated more accurately when collected together with other labels of exactly the same style).
Because of the huge variations in record labels from 1962 to the 1990s, the UK may be the most prolific country for Dylan releases, even including the USA with its much larger number of processing plants.
Before 1962 Columbia records from the USA were released in the UK by Philips (who later became PolyGram, and are now part of Universal) on the Philips and Fontana labels. CBS records were pressed by Philips from their launch as a separate label in 1962 and CBS didn't own pressing facilities until they bought Oriole Records in 1964. Oriole had a pressing plant at Aston Clinton near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, kept busy by the weekly Embassy titles for Woolworths, well over half their output. Oriole had also released American Columbia hits in the UK in the early 1960s. The pressing plants made the company an attractive proposition, and US giant CBS was seeking its own pressing facility instead of relying on its partnership with Philips. When Oriole was bought by CBS on 21 Sep 1964 most of the catalogue ceased, but Oriole singles continued to be issued until Nov 1965. Oriole LPs were thicker than average, all the early Motown LPs in Britain were on the Oriole-American label and their collectability is enhanced by the heavy vinyl. CBS continued with both the Oriole Embassy and Realm labels for some years.

CBS records were released in the UK up to 1991, when they became Columbia. Up until this time the UK Columbia record label was part of EMI (now also part of Universal), with no link to the US Columbia label, as it was everywhere in the world except North America (in Spain the Columbia label was separately owned by RCA, so former CBS releases became CBS/Sony during the 1990s).
There's an easy way to identify Philips-made CBS LPs. The inner pressing ring is deeper and about 22mm while CBS pressings have a ring of about 32mm. Also, all Philips pressings have an inverted triangle as a part of the matrix numbers. Another Side of Bob Dylan was the last UK CBS LP (of any artist, not just Dylan) made by Philips first. A small number of Dylan records from before 1964 were made by a third pressing company, possibly EMI, and can be distinguished by British purchase tax codes such as "O/T", "M/T" and "Z/T" stamped in the centre of the labels.

CBS UK used textured record labels (often described as "rough") before 1967, and smooth labels after that.

On the CBS release the matrix numbers are “BPG 62xxx A” or “BPG 62xxx B” above the shorter text of “(P) 196x". (The “L” on the Philips record label meant Mono, with “Y” for Stereo.) The matrix numbers on the Philips-made records are very complicated, including several inverted triangles, e.g. "V V V". CBS record matrix numbers are far simpler. The Philips labels have "BPG 62xxx" to the right of the centre hole, while the CBS labels have "BPG 62xxx".
On the first Philips-made Bob Dylan Side 1 record label the first song is “You’re No Good”, later changed to “She’s No Good” – on the CBS releases it’s listed as “She’s No Good”. The song has always been listed as "You're No Good" on the front and rear of the sleeve.
The first copy of Bringing It All Back Home shown is a curiosity because it does not have a Philips-style record label, but it does have Philips-style matrix numbers, different from the CBS matrix numbers for the album. The second copy of Bringing It All Back Home shown was a contract pressing possibly by EMI ordered by CBS, because of capacity problems at this time - special characteristics are the raised “M” and “T” to the left and right of the centre hole of Side 2, which can be seen (and felt) if the record is examined closely, but which are impossible to scan. ("M/T" was a UK tax code used by EMI and stamped on either side of the centre hole of their records.) There are equivalent pressings for Highway 61 Revisited. Both have CBS-style record labels but have different matrix numbers from the CBS pressings. The two possible EMI pressings come in different sleeves, and the second copy has a "U" stamped in the vinyl on each side directly opposite the matrix number. I am however informed that these copies do not look like pressings from the EMI Plant at Hayes, Middlesex, so where they actually come from is yet unclear. More authoritative information required!

"33⅓ RPM"
On these record labels, dating from 1966 onwards, the playing speed to the left of the centre hole is now "33⅓" instead of just "33". This occurs in two different typefaces as shown.
There is no publication date to the right of the centre hole on either copy of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan or Bringing It All Back Home. Another Side Of Bob Dylan has "(P) 1964". After that Highway 61 Revisited has "(P) 1965", Blonde On Blonde and Greatest Hits have "(P) 1966", John Wesley Harding has "(P) 1968" and Nashville Skyline has "(P) 1969".

This dates them all at around 1969 (Nashville Skyline was the only UK mono release to have this type of label on first release, it was also the last UK mono release).
Mono Single/EP Record Labels
All CBS UK mono records have plain orange labels for the original commercial releases and white labels for promo releases. Reissues still in mono have orange/yellow CBS labels.

All CBS Records 7" singles with push-out centres had four spokes. The variants of CBS 201811 and CBS 201824 with three spokes were made for CBS by Philips to meet extra demand.

The Sep 1966 single Just Like A Woman/Obviously 5 Believers (CBS 2360) was not released in the UK.
The May 1969 UK CBS 4219 single is shown with push-out and solid centres, but can also be found with an open centre.
As far as I know CBS 7329 from Jun 1971 was the last new release of a UK mono single, although Wigwam/Copper Kettle in 1970 had been released only in stereo.

All of these have orange labels with "33" and the "STEREO"/Arrows logo to the left of the centre hole, except the second and third variants of The Times They Are A-Changin', which not only have "33⅓" but a catalogue number of "SBPG 62251" and "(P) 1964" like a CBS label. These labels still have the Philips-style "1Y"/"2Y" after the catalogue numbers to the right of the centre hole. Track 1 on Side 1 of Bob Dylan is correctly listed as "You're No Good". It is possible because of the matrix numbers (Side 1 - SBPG-62193-1A-1, Side 2 - SBPG-62193-2B-1) that the two variants of the second version of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan shown were pressed by a contractor such as EMI, not Philips. As far as I know Another Side Of Bob Dylan was the last stereo Dylan album pressed by Philips, although mono copies of Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited pressed by Philips exist as shown above.

Gerd Rundel's copy shown of Bringing It All Back Home was probably pressed by EMI because Side 2 has a tax code "K/T" stamped on either side of the centre hole. Simon Blokker's copy also has the catalogue number on the labels as “sbpg 62515”, the same record matrix numbers, and the same sleeve printed by Ernest J. Day & Co., Ltd. However, on his record labels the song titles are more widely spaced than on the labels of Gerd's copy, with much less space between song 7 and "MADE IN ENGLAND". |

These releases start with Nashville Skyline in 1969. The last album to have plain orange CBS record labels on first release was The Basement Tapes in 1975, and only in limited quantities. My copy bought on the day of release had the new orange/yellow labels.

The first Bob Dylan album to be released with orange/yellow ("sunburst") CBS UK labels was The Basement Tapes in 1975. Because of the amazing number of variants these orange/yellow labels are divided (arbitrarily) into three groups:

There are two different variants of the 1970s release of CBS SDDP 66012 (copy shown from James Ratcliff). Sides 1 and 2 are both the same, but on the first variant Sides 1 and 2 of Record 2 are numbered "3" and "4", and on the second variant they are numbered "1" and "2"! All other details of the labels are the same, as are the matrix numbers.

These Blood On The Tracks record labels from the late 1970s/early 1980s are anomalies. The variant 2 label has CBS copyright information at the bottom of the labels and "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text (option 3 immediately below for stereo catalogue numbers without "BPG"), but does not have the expected "LC|0149" code left or right of the centre hole. The variant 3 label also has "MADE IN ENGLAND" in the circumference text and also does not have the expected "LC|0149" code. Variant 1 below has the "LC|0149" code! |

Orange/yellow labels - catalogue numbers in various formats (with "LC|0149" code)
"LC|0149" is an EU Label Code introduced in 1977 by the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) and represents CBS Records. It does not seem to have appeared on record labels until 1979, with Bob Dylan At Budokan in Apr 1979 being the first Dylan album to have an LC code on the labels on first release. There are several different (and confusing) orange/yellow CBS label formats with the code placed on varying positions on the labels. Again because of the amazing number of variants these orange/yellow labels are divided (again arbitrarily) into three groups:

These record labels have "throwback" catalogue numbers of "S bpg" or "S BPG" (the Blonde On Blonde labels as "DDP" or "(S) DDP"). "MADE IN ENGLAND" is still printed at the bottom of these labels. CBS S BPG 62022 and the first Blonde On Blonde label have the "LC|0149" code to the left of the centre hole below "STEREO" and the arrows logo. CBS S BPG 62251 has the "LC|0149" code to the right of the centre hole on the second text line, and just "STEREO" and the arrows logo to the left of the centre hole. The copy of CBS S bpg 62572 shown has the "LC|0149" capsule high on the right of the label, near the large CBS logo, while "Stereo" to the left of the centre hole doesn't have an arrows logo. The CBS S BPG 63252 record label has the "LC|0149" code to the left of the centre hole below "STEREO", which also doesn't have an arrows logo. |

The second and third Blonde On Blonde labels have the "LC|0149" code to the right of the centre hole. They are identical apart from the catalogue numbers to the left and right of the centre hole.

The design is similar to the previous label design except that "MADE IN ENGLAND" is now in the circumference text, with no text at the bottom of the labels. This is a design that you expect to find only on 1980s record labels, see below! Blonde On Blonde and Before The Flood again have odd catalogue numbers of "CBS 22130" and "CBS 22137". Red CBS labels
As far as I know there was no CBS UK release of Biograph in 1985, the 5LP sets sold in the UK with red CBS labels were sourced from Holland. Therefore Knocked Out Loaded in 1986 is the first CBS UK Dylan album to have red CBS labels on first release. All of these labels except three have an "LC|0149" capsule to the right of the centre hole.

Third variant - new catalogue numbers (1987-90)
These 1987-90 releases have new catalogue numbers, "CBS 46xxxx 1". Down In The Groove was the first CBS Dylan album to have this style of labels on first release. All of these releases have just "STEREO" to the left of the centre hole.

Columbia UK Record Labels, 1990s:
These are the only two Columbia UK vinyl releases I have so far, both re-releases of 1960s albums. As far as I know there were no Columbia UK vinyl releases of any Dylan album from The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 [Rare and Unreleased] 1961-1991 onwards, the 5LP sets of that release sold in the UK were sourced from Holland, as have been all subsequent European vinyl releases, except those licensed by Columbia to third parties.

These labels are exactly the same as the second CBS red label design with a Columbia logo instead of a CBS logo. They even still have the "LC|0149" EU Label Code representing CBS Records as the second line of text to the right of the centre hole as the previous CBS releases (it should have changed to "LC|0162" representing Columbia). "MADE IN ENGLAND" and CBS copyright info are printed in the circumference text to the right of the centre hole. There is no text at the bottom of the labels. Columbia 32344 still has the "STEREO"/arrows printed to the left of the centre hole, Columbia 22130 has just "STEREO", and is possibly later. |

Dr. Hanns Peter Bushoff has three copies of the Columbia/Simply Vinyl 180gm vinyl release of Bob Dylan, one with the white labels shown, a later release with orange labels, and a test pressing. All the Side 1 track titles are correct on both commercial releases! The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was released in 2001 and 2003 with slightly different sleeves but the same record labels. Another Side Of Bob Dylan had orange labels only. Bringing It All Back Home has blue record labels! There were two record label variants of Highway 61 Revisited, SVLP 173, one has "Columbia" on the left of the centre hole, the other doesn't. There were two record label variants of Blonde On Blonde, SVLP 063, one has "2000" on the right of the centre hole under the copyright text on Side 1 and 3 (not shown), the other doesn't. Planet Waves, SVLP 331, and Desire, SVLP 350, have red Columbia labels (the only two releases shown not to have 1960s-style labels). There are two record label variants of Street-Legal, the labels have several differences, but the most noticeable is that on the first release Is Your Love In Vain is track 5 on Side 1 instead of track 1 on Side 2! On the second release there are only four tracks on Side 1. There was also a Simply Vinyl release of Oh Mercy, SVLP 319, but the copy notified to me is still sealed.
All vinyl releases sold in the UK after this have been limited editions sourced from Holland.

CBS S 5122 in Jul 1970 (Wigwam/Copper Kettle from Self Portrait) was the first UK stereo single. It was a double A-side, so both sides of the promo single had white labels with a large orange "A". All other UK promo singles have plain white CBS labels on the B-sides. |

CBS UK introduced the orange/yellow "sunburst" label
design for singles about a year before LPs. These singles include stereo reissues of original mono
singles. The promo singles again have white CBS labels with a large

the A-side. Hans Seegers dates two releases of S CBS 1762 as 1981, but they do not have the "LC|0149" EU Label Code. However, the release of S CBS 1762 he dates as 1980 below has it at top right! |

My original copy of CBS A 6112, although bought in the UK, is actually the Dutch release and is not shown. The last CBS UK orange/yellow label single was from 1985. The promo singles again have white CBS labels with a large yellow/orange "A" on the A-side.

These were used from around 1971 in France and from 1978 to 1983 in the UK. For injection type labels each side has an injected coloured plastic ring into which the text and graphics have been cut to show the black vinyl beneath, there are no paper labels. |

These three singles appear to have been the only
releases specifically for the UK. The labels have individual styles. There have been several other Columbia
stereo 7" single releases,
but these were made in Holland for Europe-wide distribution. The 2015 Like
A Rolling Stone (alternate take) release has no catalogue number. I have also had reports of a 1991 UK 7" single CBS 656707-7 (Series Of Dreams/Seven Curses) but I have not found it so far. |
